Doping evolution of the charge excitations and electron correlations in electron-doped superconducting La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Electron correlations play a dominant role in the charge dynamics of the cuprates. We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to track the doping dependence of the collective charge excitations in electron doped La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$(LCCO). From the resonant energy dependence and the out-of-plane momentum dependence, the charge excitations are identified as three-dimensional (3D) plasmons, which reflect the nature of the electronic structure and Coulomb repulsion on both short and long length scales. With increasing electron doping, the plasmon excitations show monotonic hardening in energy, a consequence of the electron correlation effect on electron structure near the Fermi surface (FS). Importantly, the plasmon excitations evolve from a broad feature into a well defined peak with much increased life time, revealing the evolution of the electrons from incoherent states to coherent quasi-particles near the FS. Such evolution marks the reduction of the short-range electronic correlation, and thus the softening of the Mottness of the system with increasing electron doping.

Magnetoresistance in Metallic Ferroelectrics

Polar metals with ferroelectric-like displacements in metals have been achieved recently, half century later than Anderson and Blount's prediction. However, the genuine ferroelectricity with electrical dipolar switching has not yet been attained experimentally in the conducting materials, especially the ones possessing magnetic responses. Here we report the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetoresistance (MR) in the metallic PbNb0.12Ti0.88O3 (PNTO) thin films. We found that the conducting and magnetic responses of PNTO films are highly asymmetric. Negative MR up to 50% is observed under an in-plane magnetic field; the MR switches to positive with the magnetic field applied parallel to the surface normal. Such unique behavior is attributed to the moving electron caused effective magnetic field which couples with the spins of electrons, which form a dynamic multiferroic state in the metallic PNTO. These findings break a path to multiferroic metal and offer a great potential to the multi-functional devices.

Giant photoinduced lattice distortion in oxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO2.5 thin films

Despite of the tremendous efforts spent on the oxygen vacancy migration in determining the property optimization of oxygen-vacancy enrichment transition metal oxides, few has focused on their dynamic behaviors non-equilibrium states. In this work, we performed multi-timescale ultrafast X-ray diffraction measurements by using picosecond synchrotron X-ray pulses and femtosecond table-top X-ray pulses to monitor the structural dynamics in the oxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO2.5 thin films. A giant photoinduced strain (Δc/c > 1%) was observed, whose distinct correlation with the pump photon energy indicates a non-thermal origin of the photoinduced strain. The sub-picosecond resolution X-ray diffraction reveals the formation and propagation of the coherent acoustic phonons inside the film. We also simulate the effect of photoexcited electron-hole pairs and the resulting lattice changes using the Density Function Theory method to obtain further insight on the microscopic mechanism of the measured photostriction effect. Comparable photostrictive responses and the strong dependence on excitation wavelength are predicted, revealing a bonding to anti-bonding charge transfer or high spin to intermediate spin crossover induced lattice expansion in the oxygen-vacancy films.

Manipulating Multiple Order Parameters via Oxygen Vacancies: The case of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ

Controlling functionalities, such as magnetism or ferroelectricity, by means of oxygen vacancies (VO) is a key issue for the future development of transition metal oxides. Progress in this field is currently addressed through VO variations and their impact on mainly one order parameter. Here we reveal a new mechanism for tuning both magnetism and ferroelectricity simultaneously by using VO. Combined experimental and density-functional theory studies of Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies create Ti3+ 3d1 defect states, mediating the ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Eu 4f7 spins, and increase an off-center displacement of Ti ions, enhancing the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The dual function of Ti sites also promises a magnetoelectric coupling in the Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Induced Antiferromagnetism to Ferromagnetism Transformation in Multiferroic Thin Films

Oxygen vacancies (VOs) effects on magnetic ordering in Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3-δ (EBTO3-δ) thin films have been investigated using a combination of experimental measurements and first-principles density-functional calculations. Two kinds of EBTO3-δthin films with different oxygen deficiency have been fabricated. A nuclear resonance backscattering spectrometry technique has been used to quantitatively measure contents of the VOs. Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3 ceramics have been known to exhibit ferroelectric (FE) and G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) properties. While, a ferromagnetic (FM) behavior with a Curie temperature of 1.85 K has been found in the EBTO3-δ thin films. Spin-polarized Ti3+ ions, which originated from the VOs, has been proven to mediate a FM coupling between the local Eu 4f spins and were believed to be responsible for the great change of the magnetic ordering. Our work opens up a new avenue for developing FM-FE materials by manipulating the oxygen deficiency in AFM-FE multiferroics.

Doping and dimensionality effects on the core-level spectra of layered ruthenates

Core-level spectra of the Mn-doped Sr3Ru2O7 and Srn+1RunO3n+1 (n = 1, 2 and 3) crystals are investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Doping of Mn to Sr3Ru2O7 considerably affects the distribution of core-level spectral weight. The satellite of Ru 3d core levels exhibits a substantial change with doping, indicating an enhanced electron localization across the doping- induced metal-insulator transition. However, the Ru 3p core levels remain identical with Mn-doping, thus showing no sign of doping-induced multiple Ru valences. In the Srn+1RunO3n+1 (n = 1, 2 and 3), the Ru 3d core-level spectra are similar, indicating that the chemical bonding environment around Ru ions remains the same for different layered compounds. Meanwhile the Sr 3d shallow core levels shift to higher binding energy with increasing n, suggesting their participation in Sr-O bonding with structural evolution.
