HI Galaxy Signatures in the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey -- III. Unveiling the obscured part of the Vela Supercluster

We conducted a search for HI emission of the gas-rich galaxies in the Vela region ($260^{\circ} \leq \ell \leq 290^{\circ}, -2^{\circ} \leq b \leq 1^{\circ}$) to explore the Vela Supercluster (VSCL) at $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 18000$ km s$^{-1}$, largely obscured by Galactic dust. Within the mostly RFI-free band ($250 < V_\mathrm{hel} < 25000$ km s$^{-1}$) of MeerKAT, the analysis focuses on $157$ hexagonally distributed pointings extracted from the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey located in the Vela region (Vela$-$SMGPS). These were combined into 10 contiguous mosaics, covering a ${\sim}90$ deg$^2$ area. Among the $843$ HI detected sources, 39 were previously discovered in the Parkes HIZOA survey ($V_\mathrm{hel} < 12000$ km s$^{-1}$; rms $\sim 6$ mJy beam$^{-1}$). With the improved rms level of the Vela$-$SMGPS, i.e., $0.29 - 0.56$ mJy beam$^{-1}$, our study unveils nearly 12 times more detections (471 candidates) in that same velocity range. We furthermore could identify $187$ galaxy candidates with an HI mass limit reaching $\log (M_{\rm HI}/\rm M_{\odot}) = 9.44$ in the VSCL velocity range $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 19500 \pm 3500$ km s$^{-1}$. We find indications of two wall-like overdensities that confirm the original suspicion that these walls intersect at low latitudes around longitudes of $\ell \sim 272^{\circ} - 278^{\circ}$. We also find a strong signature most likely associated with the Hydra/Antlia extension and evidence of a previously unknown narrow filament at $V_\mathrm{hel} \sim 12000$ km s$^{-1}$. This paper demonstrates the efficiency of systematic HI surveys with the SKA precursor MeerKAT, even in the most obscured part of the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA).

Multi-view Remote Sensing Image Segmentation With SAM priors

Multi-view segmentation in Remote Sensing (RS) seeks to segment images from diverse perspectives within a scene. Recent methods leverage 3D information extracted from an Implicit Neural Field (INF), bolstering result consistency across multiple views while using limited accounts of labels (even within 3-5 labels) to streamline labor. Nonetheless, achieving superior performance within the constraints of limited-view labels remains challenging due to inadequate scene-wide supervision and insufficient semantic features within the INF. To address these. we propose to inject the prior of the visual foundation model-Segment Anything(SAM), to the INF to obtain better results under the limited number of training data. Specifically, we contrast SAM features between testing and training views to derive pseudo labels for each testing view, augmenting scene-wide labeling information. Subsequently, we introduce SAM features via a transformer into the INF of the scene, supplementing the semantic information. The experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms the mainstream method, confirming the efficacy of SAM as a supplement to the INF for this task.

Repeated-Root Cyclic Codes with Optimal Parameters or Best Parameters Known

Cyclic codes are the most studied subclass of linear codes and widely used in data storage and communication systems. Many cyclic codes have optimal parameters or the best parameters known. They are divided into simple-root cyclic codes and repeated-root cyclic codes. Although there are a huge number of references on cyclic codes, few of them are on repeated-root cyclic codes. Hence, repeated-root cyclic codes are rarely studied. There are a few families of distance-optimal repeated-root binary and $p$-ary cyclic codes for odd prime $p$ in the literature. However, it is open whether there exists an infinite family of distance-optimal repeated-root cyclic codes over $\bF_q$ for each even $q \geq 4$. In this paper, three infinite families of distance-optimal repeated-root cyclic codes with minimum distance 3 or 4 are constructed; two other infinite families of repeated-root cyclic codes with minimum distance 3 or 4 are developed; seven infinite families of repeated-root cyclic codes with minimum distance 6 or 8 or 10 are presented; and two infinite families of repeated-root binary cyclic codes with parameters $[2n, k, d \geq (n-1)/\log_2 n]$, where $n=2^m-1$ and $k \geq n$, are constructed. In addition, 27 repeated-root cyclic codes of length up to $254$ over $\bF_q$ for $q \in \{2, 4, 8\}$ with optimal parameters or best parameters known are obtained in this paper. The results of this paper show that repeated-root cyclic codes could be very attractive and are worth of further investigation.

FreeCustom: Tuning-Free Customized Image Generation for Multi-Concept Composition

Benefiting from large-scale pre-trained text-to-image (T2I) generative models, impressive progress has been achieved in customized image generation, which aims to generate user-specified concepts. Existing approaches have extensively focused on single-concept customization and still encounter challenges when it comes to complex scenarios that involve combining multiple concepts. These approaches often require retraining/fine-tuning using a few images, leading to time-consuming training processes and impeding their swift implementation. Furthermore, the reliance on multiple images to represent a singular concept increases the difficulty of customization. To this end, we propose FreeCustom, a novel tuning-free method to generate customized images of multi-concept composition based on reference concepts, using only one image per concept as input. Specifically, we introduce a new multi-reference self-attention (MRSA) mechanism and a weighted mask strategy that enables the generated image to access and focus more on the reference concepts. In addition, MRSA leverages our key finding that input concepts are better preserved when providing images with context interactions. Experiments show that our method's produced images are consistent with the given concepts and better aligned with the input text. Our method outperforms or performs on par with other training-based methods in terms of multi-concept composition and single-concept customization, but is simpler. Optimal preprocessing of WiFi CSI for sensing applications

Due to its ubiquitous and contact-free nature, the use of WiFi infrastructure for performing sensing tasks has tremendous potential. However, the channel state information (CSI) measured by a WiFi receiver suffers from errors in both its gain and phase, which can significantly hinder sensing tasks. By analyzing these errors from different WiFi receivers, a mathematical model for these gain and phase errors is developed in this work. Based on these models, several theoretically justified preprocessing algorithms for correcting such errors at a receiver and, thus, obtaining clean CSI are presented. Simulation results show that at typical system parameters, the developed algorithms for cleaning CSI can reduce noise by $40$% and $200$%, respectively, compared to baseline methods for gain correction and phase correction, without significantly impacting computational cost. The superiority of the proposed methods is also validated in a real-world test bed for respiration rate monitoring (an example sensing task), where they improve the estimation signal-to-noise ratio by $20$% compared to baseline methods.

DOP: Diagnostic-Oriented Prompting for Large Language Models in Mathematical Correction

Math world problems correction(MWPC) is a novel task dedicated to rectifying reasoning errors in the process of solving mathematical problems. In this paper, leveraging the advancements in large language models (LLMs), we address two key objectives:(1) Distinguishing between mathematical reasoning and error correction; (2) Exploring strategies to enhance the error correction capabilities of LLMs in mathematics to solve MWPC task. We noticed that, in real-time education, assisting students in recognizing their mistakes is more crucial than simply providing correct answers. However, current research tends to prioritize obtaining accurate solutions to math problems rather than correcting potentially incorrect ones. Therefore, we modify the research paradigm, demonstrating that improving mathematical reasoning abilities does not equate to mastery in error correction. Meanwhile, we propose a novel method called diagnostic-oriented promping(DOP) aimed at facilitating LLMs to excel in error correction. In experiments, DOP has shown outstanding performance, highlighting its significant impact. We argue that in mathematical education, the demand for outstanding correctors surpasses that for proficient reasoners. WiDRa -- Enabling Millimeter-Level Differential Ranging Accuracy in Wi-Fi Using Carrier Phase

Although Wi-Fi is an ideal technology for many ranging applications, the performance of current methods is limited by the system bandwidth, leading to low accuracy of $\sim 1$ m. For many applications, measuring differential range, viz., the change in the range between adjacent measurements, is sufficient. Correspondingly, this work proposes WiDRa - a Wi-Fi based Differential Ranging solution that provides differential range estimates by using the sum-carrier-phase information. The proposed method is not limited by system bandwidth and can track range changes even smaller than the carrier wavelength. The proposed method is first theoretically justified, while taking into consideration the various hardware impairments affecting Wi-Fi chips. In the process, methods to isolate the sum-carrier phase from the hardware impairments are proposed. Extensive simulation results show that WiDRa can achieve a differential range estimation root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of $\approx 1$ mm in channels with a Rician-factor $\geq 7$ (a $100 \times$ improvement to existing methods). The proposed methods are also validated on off-the-shelf Wi-Fi hardware to demonstrate feasibility, where they achieve an RMSE of $< 1$ mm in the differential range. Finally, limitations of current investigation and future directions of exploration are suggested, to further tap into the potential of WiDRa.

Deep Koopman Operator-Informed Safety Command Governor for Autonomous Vehicles

Modeling of nonlinear behaviors with physical-based models poses challenges. However, Koopman operator maps the original nonlinear system into an infinite-dimensional linear space to achieve global linearization of the nonlinear system through input and output data, which derives an absolute equivalent linear representation of the original state space. Due to the impossibility of implementing the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator, finite-dimensional kernel functions are selected as an approximation. Given its flexible structure and high accuracy, deep learning is initially employed to extract kernel functions from data and acquire a linear evolution dynamic of the autonomous vehicle in the lifted space. Additionally, the control barrier function (CBF) converts the state constraints to the constraints on the input to render safety property. Then, in terms of the lateral stability of the in-wheel motor driven vehicle, the CBF conditions are incorporated with the learned deep Koopman model. Because of the linear fashion of the deep Koopman model, the quadratic programming problem is formulated to generate the applied driving torque with minimal perturbation to the original driving torque as a safety command governor. In the end, to validate the fidelity of the deep Koopman model compared to other mainstream approaches and demonstrate the lateral improvement achieved by the proposed safety command governor, data collection and safety testing scenarios are conducted on a hardware-in-the-loop platform.

Incorporating ESO into Deep Koopman Operator Modelling for Control of Autonomous Vehicles

Koopman operator theory is a kind of data-driven modelling approach that accurately captures the nonlinearities of mechatronic systems such as vehicles against physics-based methods. However, the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator is impossible to implement in real-world applications. To approximate the infinite-dimensional Koopman operator through collection dataset rather than manual trial and error, we adopt deep neural networks (DNNs) to extract basis functions by offline training and map the nonlinearities of vehicle planar dynamics into a linear form in the lifted space. Besides, the effects of the dimensions of basis functions on the model accuracy are explored. Further, the extended state observer (ESO) is introduced to online estimate the total disturbance in the lifted space and compensate for the modelling errors and residuals of the learned deep Koopman operator (DK) while also improving its generalization. Then, the proposed model is applied to predict vehicle states within prediction horizons and later formulates the constrained finite-time optimization problem of model predictive control (MPC), i.e., ESO-DKMPC. In terms of the trajectory tracking of autonomous vehicles, the ESO-DKMPC generates the wheel steering angle to govern lateral motions based on the decoupling control structure. The various conditions under the double-lane change scenarios are built on the CarSim/Simulink co-simulation platform, and extensive comparisons are conducted with the linear MPC (LMPC) and nonlinear MPC (NMPC) informed by the physics-based model. The results indicate that the proposed ESO-DKMPC has better tracking performance and moderate efficacy both within linear and nonlinear regions.

DiverGen: Improving Instance Segmentation by Learning Wider Data Distribution with More Diverse Generative Data

Instance segmentation is data-hungry, and as model capacity increases, data scale becomes crucial for improving the accuracy. Most instance segmentation datasets today require costly manual annotation, limiting their data scale. Models trained on such data are prone to overfitting on the training set, especially for those rare categories. While recent works have delved into exploiting generative models to create synthetic datasets for data augmentation, these approaches do not efficiently harness the full potential of generative models. To address these issues, we introduce a more efficient strategy to construct generative datasets for data augmentation, termed DiverGen. Firstly, we provide an explanation of the role of generative data from the perspective of distribution discrepancy. We investigate the impact of different data on the distribution learned by the model. We argue that generative data can expand the data distribution that the model can learn, thus mitigating overfitting. Additionally, we find that the diversity of generative data is crucial for improving model performance and enhance it through various strategies, including category diversity, prompt diversity, and generative model diversity. With these strategies, we can scale the data to millions while maintaining the trend of model performance improvement. On the LVIS dataset, DiverGen significantly outperforms the strong model X-Paste, achieving +1.1 box AP and +1.1 mask AP across all categories, and +1.9 box AP and +2.5 mask AP for rare categories.

Integrated Monostatic Sensing and Full-Duplex Multiuser Communication for mmWave Systems

In this paper, we propose a hybrid precoding/combining framework for communication-centric integrated sensing and full-duplex (FD) communication operating at mmWave bands. The designed precoders and combiners enable multiuser (MU) FD communication while simultaneously supporting monostatic sensing in a frequency-selective setting. The joint design of precoders and combiners involves the mitigation of self-interference (SI) caused by simultaneous transmission and reception at the FD base station (BS). Additionally, MU interference needs to be handled by the precoder/combiner design. The resulting optimization problem involves non-convex constraints since hybrid analog/digital architectures utilize networks of phase shifters. To solve the proposed problem, we separate the optimization of each precoder/combiner, and design each one of them while fixing the others. The precoders at the FD BS are designed by reformulating the communication and sensing constraints as signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) maximization problems that consider SI and MU interference as leakage. Furthermore, we design the frequency-flat analog combiner such that the residual SI at the FD BS is minimized under communication and sensing gain constraints. Finally, we design an interference-aware digital combining stage that separates MU signals and target reflections. The communication performance and sensing results show that the proposed framework efficiently supports both functionalities simultaneously.

Virtual melting and cyclic transformations between amorphous Si, Si I, and Si IV in a shear band

Virtual melting (VM) as alternative deformation and stress relaxation mechanisms under extreme load is directly validated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the simple shear of single crystal Si I at a temperature 1,383 K below the melting temperature. The shear band consisting of liquid Si is formed immediately after the shear instability while stress drops to zero. A thermodynamic criterion for VM, which depends on the ratio of the sample to shear band widths, is derived analytically and confirmed by MD simulations. With further shear, the VM immediately transforms to a mixture of low-density amorphous a-Si, Si I, and IV, which undergo cyclic transformations a-Si to and from Si I, a-Si to Si IV, and Si I to and from Si IV with volume fraction of phases mostly between 0.2 and 0.4 and non-repeatable nanostructure evolution. Such cyclic transformations produce additional important carriers for plastic deformation through transformation strain and transformation-induced plasticity due to volume change, which may occur in shear bands in various material systems but missed in experiments and simulations.

LENAS: Learning-based Neural Architecture Search and Ensemble for 3D Radiotherapy Dose Prediction

Radiation therapy treatment planning requires balancing the delivery of the target dose while sparing normal tissues, making it a complex process. To streamline the planning process and enhance its quality, there is a growing demand for knowledge-based planning (KBP). Ensemble learning has shown impressive power in various deep learning tasks, and it has great potential to improve the performance of KBP. However, the effectiveness of ensemble learning heavily depends on the diversity and individual accuracy of the base learners. Moreover, the complexity of model ensembles is a major concern, as it requires maintaining multiple models during inference, leading to increased computational cost and storage overhead. In this study, we propose a novel learning-based ensemble approach named LENAS, which integrates neural architecture search with knowledge distillation for 3D radiotherapy dose prediction. Our approach starts by exhaustively searching each block from an enormous architecture space to identify multiple architectures that exhibit promising performance and significant diversity. To mitigate the complexity introduced by the model ensemble, we adopt the teacher-student paradigm, leveraging the diverse outputs from multiple learned networks as supervisory signals to guide the training of the student network. Furthermore, to preserve high-level semantic information, we design a hybrid-loss to optimize the student network, enabling it to recover the knowledge embedded within the teacher networks. The proposed method has been evaluated on two public datasets, OpenKBP and AIMIS. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method and its superior performance to the state-of-the-art methods.

DKINet: Medication Recommendation via Domain Knowledge Informed Deep Learning

Medication recommendation is a fundamental yet crucial branch of healthcare that presents opportunities to assist physicians in making more accurate medication prescriptions for patients with complex health conditions. Previous studies have primarily focused on learning patient representation from electronic health records (EHR). While considering the clinical manifestations of the patient is important, incorporating domain-specific prior knowledge is equally significant in diagnosing the patient's health conditions. However, effectively integrating domain knowledge with the patient's clinical manifestations can be challenging, particularly when dealing with complex clinical manifestations. Therefore, in this paper, we first identify comprehensive domain-specific prior knowledge, namely the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS), which is a comprehensive repository of biomedical vocabularies and standards, for knowledge extraction. Subsequently, we propose a knowledge injection module that addresses the effective integration of domain knowledge with complex clinical manifestations, enabling an effective characterization of the health conditions of the patient. Furthermore, considering the significant impact of a patient's medication history on their current medication, we introduce a historical medication-aware patient representation module to capture the longitudinal influence of historical medication information on the representation of current patients. Extensive experiments on three publicly benchmark datasets verify the superiority of our proposed method, which outperformed other methods by a significant margin. The code is available at: https://github.com/sherry6247/DKINet.

Macro Graph Neural Networks for Online Billion-Scale Recommender Systems

Predicting Click-Through Rate (CTR) in billion-scale recommender systems poses a long-standing challenge for Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) due to the overwhelming computational complexity involved in aggregating billions of neighbors. To tackle this, GNN-based CTR models usually sample hundreds of neighbors out of the billions to facilitate efficient online recommendations. However, sampling only a small portion of neighbors results in a severe sampling bias and the failure to encompass the full spectrum of user or item behavioral patterns. To address this challenge, we name the conventional user-item recommendation graph as "micro recommendation graph" and introduce a more suitable MAcro Recommendation Graph (MAG) for billion-scale recommendations. MAG resolves the computational complexity problems in the infrastructure by reducing the node count from billions to hundreds. Specifically, MAG groups micro nodes (users and items) with similar behavior patterns to form macro nodes. Subsequently, we introduce tailored Macro Graph Neural Networks (MacGNN) to aggregate information on a macro level and revise the embeddings of macro nodes. MacGNN has already served Taobao's homepage feed for two months, providing recommendations for over one billion users. Extensive offline experiments on three public benchmark datasets and an industrial dataset present that MacGNN significantly outperforms twelve CTR baselines while remaining computationally efficient. Besides, online A/B tests confirm MacGNN's superiority in billion-scale recommender systems.

Cellular Traffic Prediction Using Online Prediction Algorithms

The advent of 5G technology promises a paradigm shift in the realm of telecommunications, offering unprecedented speeds and connectivity. However, the efficient management of traffic in 5G networks remains a critical challenge. It is due to the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of network traffic, varying user behaviors, extended network size, and diverse applications, all of which demand highly accurate and adaptable prediction models to optimize network resource allocation and management. This paper investigates the efficacy of live prediction algorithms for forecasting cellular network traffic in real-time scenarios. We apply two live prediction algorithms on machine learning models, one of which is recently proposed Fast LiveStream Prediction (FLSP) algorithm. We examine the performance of these algorithms under two distinct data gathering methodologies: synchronous, where all network cells report statistics simultaneously, and asynchronous, where reporting occurs across consecutive time slots. Our study delves into the impact of these gathering scenarios on the predictive performance of traffic models. Our study reveals that the FLSP algorithm can halve the required bandwidth for asynchronous data reporting compared to conventional online prediction algorithms, while simultaneously enhancing prediction accuracy and reducing processing load. Additionally, we conduct a thorough analysis of algorithmic complexity and memory requirements across various machine learning models. Through empirical evaluation, we provide insights into the trade-offs inherent in different prediction strategies, offering valuable guidance for network optimization and resource allocation in dynamic environments.

Anomalous criticality coexists with giant cluster in the uniform forest model

We show by extensive simulations that the whole supercritical phase of the three-dimensional uniform forest model simultaneously exhibits an infinite tree and a rich variety of critical phenomena. Besides typical scalings like algebraically decaying correlation, power-law distribution of cluster sizes, and divergent correlation length, a number of anomalous behaviors emerge. The fractal dimensions for off-giant trees take different values when being measured by linear system size or gyration radius. The giant-tree size displays two-length scaling fluctuations, instead of following the central-limit theorem.

Model-Free Change Point Detection for Mixing Processes

This paper considers the change point detection problem under dependent samples. In particular, we provide performance guarantees for the MMD-CUSUM test under exponentially $α$, $β$, and fast $ϕ$-mixing processes, which significantly expands its utility beyond the i.i.d. and Markovian cases used in previous studies. We obtain lower bounds for average-run-length (ARL) and upper bounds for average-detection-delay (ADD) in terms of the threshold parameter. We show that the MMD-CUSUM test enjoys the same level of performance as the i.i.d. case under fast $ϕ$-mixing processes. The MMD-CUSUM test also achieves strong performance under exponentially $α$/$β$-mixing processes, which are significantly more relaxed than existing results. The MMD-CUSUM test statistic adapts to different settings without modifications, rendering it a completely data-driven, dependence-agnostic change point detection scheme. Numerical simulations are provided at the end to evaluate our findings.
