Dynamics in direct two-photon transition by frequency combs

Two-photon resonance transition technology has been proven to have a wide range of applications,it's limited by the available wavelength of commercial lasers. The application of optical comb technology with direct two-photon transition (DTPT) will not be restricted by cw lasers. This article will further theoretically analyze the dynamics effects of the DTPT process driven by optical frequency combs. In a three-level atomic system, the population of particles and the amount of momentum transfer on atoms are increased compared to that of the DTPT-free process. The 17% of population increasement in 6-level system of cesium atoms has verified that DTPT process has a robust enhancement on the effect of momentum transfer. It can be used to excite the DTPTs of rubidium and cesium simultaneously with the same mode-locked laser. And this technology has potential applications in cooling different atoms to obtain polar cold molecules, as well as high-precision spectroscopy measurement.

Impact of Interlayer and Ferroelectric Materials on Charge Trapping during Endurance Fatigue of FeFET with TiN/HfxZr1-xO2/interlayer/Si (MFIS) Gate Structure

We study the impact of different interlayers and ferroelectric materials on charge trapping during the endurance fatigue of Si FeFET with TiN/HfxZr1-xO2/interlayer/Si (MFIS) gate stack. We have fabricated FeFET devices with different interlayers (SiO2 or SiON) and HfxZr1-xO2 materials (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.5), and directly extracted the charge trapping during endurance fatigue. We find that: 1) The introduction of the N element in the interlayer suppresses charge trapping and defect generation, and improves the endurance characteristics. 2) As the spontaneous polarization (Ps) of the HfxZr1-xO2 decreases from 25.9 μC/cm2 (Hf0.5Zr0.5O2) to 20.3 μC/cm2 (Hf0.6Zr0.4O2), the charge trapping behavior decreases, resulting in the slow degradation rate of memory window (MW) during program/erase cycling; in addition, when the Ps further decreases to 8.1 μC/cm2 (Hf0.75Zr0.25O2), the initial MW nearly disappears (only ~0.02 V). Thus, the reduction of Ps could improve endurance characteristics. On the contract, it can also reduce the MW. Our work helps design the MFIS gate stack to improve endurance characteristics.

Experimental Extraction and Simulation of Charge Trapping during Endurance of FeFET with TiN/HfZrO/SiO2/Si (MFIS) Gate Structure

We investigate the charge trapping during endurance fatigue of FeFET with TiN/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2/SiO2/Si (MFIS) gate structure. We propose a method of experimentally extracting the number of trapped charges during the memory operation, by measuring the charges in the metal gate and Si substrate. We verify that the amount of trapped charges increases during the endurance fatigue process. This is the first time that the trapped charges are directly experimentally extracted and verified to increase during endurance fatigue. Moreover, we model the interplay between the trapped charges and ferroelectric polarization switching during endurance fatigue. Through the consistency of experimental results and simulated data, we demonstrate that as the memory window decreases: 1) The ferroelectric characteristic of Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is not degraded. 2) The trap density in the upper bandgap of the gate stacks increases. 3) The reason for memory window decrease is increased trapped electrons after program operation but not related to hole trapping/de-trapping. Our work is helpful to study the charge trapping behavior of FeFET and the related endurance fatigue process.

High-Q silicon nitride drum resonators strongly coupled to gates

Silicon nitride (SiN) mechanical resonators with high quality mechanical properties are attractive for fundamental research and applications. However, it is challenging to maintain these mechanical properties while achieving strong coupling to an electrical circuit for efficient on-chip integration. Here, we present a SiN drum resonator covered with an aluminum thin film, enabling large capacitive coupling to a suspended top-gate. Implementing the full electrical measurement scheme, we demonstrate a high quality factor ~ 1E4 (comparable to that of bare drums at room temperature) and present our ability to detect ? 10 mechanical modes at low temperature. The drum resonator is also coupled to a microwave cavity, so that we can perform optomechanical sideband pumping with a fairly good coupling strength G and demonstrate mechanical parametric amplification. This SiN drum resonator design provides efficient electrical integration and exhibits promising features for exploring mode coupling and signal processing.

Any equation is a forest: Symbolic genetic algorithm for discovering open-form partial differential equations (SGA-PDE)

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are concise and understandable representations of domain knowledge, which are essential for deepening our understanding of physical processes and predicting future responses. However, the PDEs of many real-world problems are uncertain, which calls for PDE discovery. We propose the symbolic genetic algorithm (SGA-PDE) to discover open-form PDEs directly from data without prior knowledge about the equation structure. SGA-PDE focuses on the representation and optimization of PDE. Firstly, SGA-PDE uses symbolic mathematics to realize the flexible representation of any given PDE, transforms a PDE into a forest, and converts each function term into a binary tree. Secondly, SGA-PDE adopts a specially designed genetic algorithm to efficiently optimize the binary trees by iteratively updating the tree topology and node attributes. The SGA-PDE is gradient-free, which is a desirable characteristic in PDE discovery since it is difficult to obtain the gradient between the PDE loss and the PDE structure. In the experiment, SGA-PDE not only successfully discovered nonlinear Burgers' equation, Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and Chafee-Infante equation, but also handled PDEs with fractional structure and compound functions that cannot be solved by conventional PDE discovery methods.

Robust discovery of partial differential equations in complex situations

Data-driven discovery of partial differential equations (PDEs) has achieved considerable development in recent years. Several aspects of problems have been resolved by sparse regression-based and neural network-based methods. However, the performances of existing methods lack stability when dealing with complex situations, including sparse data with high noise, high-order derivatives and shock waves, which bring obstacles to calculating derivatives accurately. Therefore, a robust PDE discovery framework, called the robust deep learning-genetic algorithm (R-DLGA), that incorporates the physics-informed neural network (PINN), is proposed in this work. In the framework, a preliminary result of potential terms provided by the deep learning-genetic algorithm is added into the loss function of the PINN as physical constraints to improve the accuracy of derivative calculation. It assists to optimize the preliminary result and obtain the ultimately discovered PDE by eliminating the error compensation terms. The stability and accuracy of the proposed R-DLGA in several complex situations are examined for proof-and-concept, and the results prove that the proposed framework is able to calculate derivatives accurately with the optimization of PINN and possesses surprising robustness to complex situations, including sparse data with high noise, high-order derivatives, and shock waves.

Revisiting Factorizing Aggregated Posterior in Learning Disentangled Representations

In the problem of learning disentangled representations, one of the promising methods is to factorize aggregated posterior by penalizing the total correlation of sampled latent variables. However, this well-motivated strategy has a blind spot: there is a disparity between the sampled latent representation and its corresponding mean representation. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation that low total correlation of sampled representation cannot guarantee low total correlation of the mean representation. Indeed, we prove that for the multivariate normal distributions, the mean representation with arbitrarily high total correlation can have a corresponding sampled representation with bounded total correlation. We also propose a method to eliminate this disparity. Experiments show that our model can learn a mean representation with much lower total correlation, hence a factorized mean representation. Moreover, we offer a detailed explanation of the limitations of factorizing aggregated posterior: factor disintegration. Our work indicates a potential direction for future research of disentangled learning.

Information Bottleneck for an Oblivious Relay with Channel State Information: the Vector Case

This paper considers the information bottleneck (IB) problem of a Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) channel. Due to the bottleneck constraint, it is impossible for the oblivious relay to inform the destination node of the perfect channel state information (CSI) in each channel realization. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node can get the perfect CSI at no cost and two achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that the lower bounds obtained by the proposed achievable schemes can come close to the upper bound on a wide range of relevant system parameters.

Information Bottleneck for a Rayleigh Fading MIMO Channel with an Oblivious Relay

This paper considers the information bottleneck (IB) problem of a Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) channel with an oblivious relay. The relay is constrained to operate without knowledge of the codebooks, i.e., it performs oblivious processing. Moreover, due to the bottleneck constraint, it is impossible for the relay to inform the destination node of the perfect channel state information (CSI) in each channel realization. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we first provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node can get the perfect CSI at no cost. Then, we provide four achievable schemes where each scheme satisfies the bottleneck constraint and gives a lower bound to the bottleneck rate. In the first and second schemes, the relay splits the capacity of the relay-destination link into two parts, and conveys both the CSI and its observation to the destination node. Due to CSI transmission, the performance of these two schemes is sensitive to the MIMO channel dimension, especially the channel input dimension. To ensure that it still performs well when the channel dimension grows large, in the third and fourth achievable schemes, the relay only transmits compressed observation to the destination node. Numerical results show that with simple symbol-by-symbol oblivious relay processing and compression, the proposed achievable schemes work well and can demonstrate lower bounds coming quite close to the upper bound on a wide range of relevant system parameters.

Control of a Tail-Sitter VTOL UAV Based on Recurrent Neural Networks

Tail-sitter vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the capability of hovering and performing efficient level flight with compact mechanical structures. We present a unified controller design for such UAVs, based on recurrent neural networks. An advantage of this design method is that the various flight modes (i.e., hovering, transition and level flight) of a VTOL UAV are controlled in a unified manner, as opposed to treating them separately and in the runtime switching one from another. The proposed controller consists of an outer-loop position controller and an inner-loop attitude controller. The inner-loop controller is composed of a proportional attitude controller and a loop-shaping linear angular rate controller. For the outer-loop controller, we propose a nonlinear solver to compute the desired attitude and thrust, based on the UAV dynamics and an aerodynamic model, in addition to a cascaded PID controller for the position and velocity tracking. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN) to approximate the behavior of the nonlinear solver, which suffers from high computational complexity. The proposed RNN has negligible approximation errors, and can be implemented in real-time (e.g., 50 Hz). Moreover, the RNN generates much smoother outputs than the nonlinear solver. We provide an analysis of the stability and robustness of the overall closed-loop system. Simulation and experiments are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Topological Regularization for Graph Neural Networks Augmentation

The complexity and non-Euclidean structure of graph data hinder the development of data augmentation methods similar to those in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a feature augmentation method for graph nodes based on topological regularization, in which topological structure information is introduced into end-to-end model. Specifically, we first obtain topology embedding of nodes through unsupervised representation learning method based on random walk. Then, the topological embedding as additional features and the original node features are input into a dual graph neural network for propagation, and two different high-order neighborhood representations of nodes are obtained. On this basis, we propose a regularization technique to bridge the differences between the two different node representations, eliminate the adverse effects caused by the topological features of graphs directly used, and greatly improve the performance. We have carried out extensive experiments on a large number of datasets to prove the effectiveness of our model.

EMDS-5: Environmental Microorganism Image Dataset Fifth Version for Multiple Image Analysis Tasks

Environmental Microorganism Data Set Fifth Version (EMDS-5) is a microscopic image dataset including original Environmental Microorganism (EM) images and two sets of Ground Truth (GT) images. The GT image sets include a single-object GT image set and a multi-object GT image set. The EMDS-5 dataset has 21 types of EMs, each of which contains 20 original EM images, 20 single-object GT images and 20 multi-object GT images. EMDS-5 can realize to evaluate image preprocessing, image segmentation, feature extraction, image classification and image retrieval functions. In order to prove the effectiveness of EMDS-5, for each function, we select the most representative algorithms and price indicators for testing and evaluation. The image preprocessing functions contain two parts: image denoising and image edge detection. Image denoising uses nine kinds of filters to denoise 13 kinds of noises, respectively. In the aspect of edge detection, six edge detection operators are used to detect the edges of the images, and two evaluation indicators, peak-signal to noise ratio and mean structural similarity, are used for evaluation. Image segmentation includes single-object image segmentation and multi-object image segmentation. Six methods are used for single-object image segmentation, while k-means and U-net are used for multi-object segmentation. We extract nine features from the images in EMDS-5 and use the Support Vector Machine classifier for testing. In terms of image classification, we select the VGG16 feature to test different classifiers. We test two types of retrieval approaches: texture feature retrieval and deep learning feature retrieval. We select the last layer of features of these two deep learning networks as feature vectors. We use mean average precision as the evaluation index for retrieval.

For three typical sets of small reaction networks (networks with two reactions, one irreversible and one reversible reaction, or two reversible-reaction pairs), we completely answer the challenging question: what is the smallest subset of all multistable networks such that any multistable network outside of the subset contains either more species or more reactants than any network in this subset?

How Much Communication Resource is Needed to Run a Wireless Blockchain Network?

Blockchain is built on a peer-to-peer network that relies on frequent communications among the distributively located nodes. In particular, the consensus mechanisms (CMs), which play a pivotal role in blockchain, are communication resource-demanding and largely determines blockchain security bound and other key performance metrics such as transaction throughput, latency and scalability. Most blockchain systems are designed in a stable wired communication network running in advanced devices under the assumption of sufficient communication resource provision. However, it is envisioned that the majority of the blockchain node peers will be connected through the wireless network in the future. Constrained by the highly dynamic wireless channel and scarce frequency spectrum, communication can significantly affect blockchain's key performance metrics. Hence, in this paper, we present wireless blockchain networks (WBN) under various commonly used CMs and we answer the question of how much communication resource is needed to run such a network. We first present the role of communication in the four stages of the blockchain procedure. We then discuss the relationship between the communication resource provision and the WBNs performance, for three of the most used blockchain CMs namely, Proof-of-Work (PoW), practical Byzantine Fault Tolerant (PBFT) and Raft. Finally, we provide analytical and simulated results to show the impact of the communication resource provision on blockchain performance.

Deep-learning based discovery of partial differential equations in integral form from sparse and noisy data

Data-driven discovery of partial differential equations (PDEs) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Although significant progress has been made, certain unresolved issues remain. For example, for PDEs with high-order derivatives, the performance of existing methods is unsatisfactory, especially when the data are sparse and noisy. It is also difficult to discover heterogeneous parametric PDEs where heterogeneous parameters are embedded in the partial differential operators. In this work, a new framework combining deep-learning and integral form is proposed to handle the above-mentioned problems simultaneously, and improve the accuracy and stability of PDE discovery. In the framework, a deep neural network is firstly trained with observation data to generate meta-data and calculate derivatives. Then, a unified integral form is defined, and the genetic algorithm is employed to discover the best structure. Finally, the value of parameters is calculated, and whether the parameters are constants or variables is identified. Numerical experiments proved that our proposed algorithm is more robust to noise and more accurate compared with existing methods due to the utilization of integral form. Our proposed algorithm is also able to discover PDEs with high-order derivatives or heterogeneous parameters accurately with sparse and noisy data.

Multi-Modal Subjective Context Modelling and Recognition

Applications like personal assistants need to be aware ofthe user's context, e.g., where they are, what they are doing, and with whom. Context information is usually inferred from sensor data, like GPS sensors and accelerometers on the user's smartphone. This prediction task is known as context recognition. A well-defined context model is fundamental for successful recognition. Existing models, however, have two major limitations. First, they focus on few aspects, like location or activity, meaning that recognition methods based onthem can only compute and leverage few inter-aspect correlations. Second, existing models typically assume that context is objective, whereas in most applications context is best viewed from the user's perspective. Neglecting these factors limits the usefulness of the context model and hinders recognition. We present a novel ontological context model that captures five dimensions, namely time, location, activity, social relations and object. Moreover, our model defines three levels of description(objective context, machine context and subjective context) that naturally support subjective annotations and reasoning. An initial context recognition experiment on real-world data hints at the promise of our model.

GripNet: Graph Information Propagation on Supergraph for Heterogeneous Graphs

Heterogeneous graph representation learning aims to learn low-dimensional vector representations of different types of entities and relations to empower downstream tasks. Existing methods either capture semantic relationships but indirectly leverage node/edge attributes in a complex way, or leverage node/edge attributes directly without taking semantic relationships into account. When involving multiple convolution operations, they also have poor scalability. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a flexible and efficient Graph information propagation Network (GripNet) framework. Specifically, we introduce a new supergraph data structure consisting of supervertices and superedges. A supervertex is a semantically-coherent subgraph. A superedge defines an information propagation path between two supervertices. GripNet learns new representations for the supervertex of interest by propagating information along the defined path using multiple layers. We construct multiple large-scale graphs and evaluate GripNet against competing methods to show its superiority in link prediction, node classification, and data integration.

Thermodynamic driving force of transient negative capacitance of ferroelectric capacitors

This paper investigates the thermodynamic driving force of transient negative capacitance (NC) in the series circuit of the resistor and ferroelectric capacitor (R-FEC). We find that the widely used Landau-Khalatnikov (L-K) theory, that is, the minimum of the Gibbs free energy, is inapplicable to explain the transient NC. The thermodynamic driving force of the transient NC phenomenon is the minimum of the difference between the elastic Gibbs free energy and the electric polarization work. The appearance of the transient NC phenomenon is not due to the widely accepted view that the ferroelectric polarization goes through the negative curvature region of elastic Gibbs free energy landscape (Ga). Instead, the transient NC phenomenon appears when the energy barrier of Ga disappears. The transient NC is dependent on both the intrinsic ferroelectric material parameters and extrinsic factors in the R-FEC circuit.
