Pervasive wireless channel modeling theory and applications to 6G GBSMs for all frequency bands and all scenarios

In this paper, a pervasive wireless channel modeling theory is first proposed, which uses a unified channel modeling method and a unified equation of channel impulse response (CIR), and can integrate important channel characteristics at different frequency bands and scenarios. Then, we apply the proposed theory to a three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency (STF) non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. The proposed 6G pervasive channel model (6GPCM) can characterize statistical properties of channels at all frequency bands from sub-6 GHz to visible light communication (VLC) bands and all scenarios such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), maritime, (ultra-)massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and industry Internet of things (IIoT) scenarios. By adjusting channel model parameters, the 6GPCM can be reduced to various simplified channel models for specific frequency bands and scenarios. Also, it includes standard fifth generation (5G) channel models as special cases. In addition, key statistical properties of the proposed 6GPCM are derived, simulated, and verified by various channel measurement results, which clearly demonstrates its accuracy, pervasiveness, and applicability.

Performance Analysis of SPAD-Based Optical Wireless Communication with OFDM

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) in optical wireless communication (OWC). SPAD operates in the Geiger mode and can act as a photon counting receiver obviating the need for a transimpedance amplifier (TIA). Although a SPAD receiver can provide higher sensitivity compared to the traditional linear photodetectors, it suffers from the dead-time-induced nonlinearity. To improve the data rates of SPAD-based OWC systems, optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be employed. This paper provides a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the SPAD-based OWC systems using OFDM signalling considering the effects of signal clipping, SPAD nonlinearity, and signal-dependent shot noise. An equivalent additive Gaussian noise channel model is proposed to describe the performance of the SPAD-based OFDM system. The statistics of the proposed channel model and the analytical expressions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) are derived in closed forms. By means of extensive numerical results, the impact of the unique receiver nonlinearity on the system performance is investigated. The results demonstrate new insights into different optical power regimes of reliable operation for SPAD-based OFDM systems even well beyond SPAD saturation level.

High-Speed Imaging Receiver Design for 6G Optical Wireless Communications: A Rate-FOV Trade-Off

The design of a compact high-speed and wide field of view (FOV) receiver is challenging due to the presence of two well-known trade-offs. The first one is the area-bandwidth trade-off of photodetectors (PDs) and the second one is the gain-FOV trade-off due to the use of optics. The combined effects of these two trade-offs imply that the achievable data rate of an imaging optical receiver is limited by its FOV, i.e., a rate-FOV trade-off. To control the area-bandwidth trade-off, an array of small PDs can be used instead of a single PD. Moreover, in practice, a large-area lens is required to ensure sufficient power collection, which in turn limits the receiver FOV (i.e., gain-FOV trade-off). We propose an imaging receiver design in the form of an array of arrays. To achieve a reasonable receiver FOV, we use individual focusing lens for each PD array rather than a single collection lens for the whole receiver. The proposed array of arrays structure provides an effective method to control both gain-FOV trade-off (via an array of lenses) and area-bandwidth trade-off (via arrays of PDs). We first derive a tractable analytical model for the SNR of an array of PDs where the maximum ratio combining has been employed. Then, we extend the model for the proposed array of arrays structure and the accuracy of the analytical model is verified based on several Optic Studio-based simulations. Next, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the achievable data rate of the imaging receiver subject to a minimum required FOV. The optimization problem is solved for two commonly used modulation techniques, namely, OOK and direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with variable rate quadrature amplitude modulation. It is demonstrated that a data rate of ~ 24 Gbps with a FOV of 15 is achievable using OOK with a total receiver size of 2 cm by 2 cm.

Flexible LED Index Modulation for MIMO Optical Wireless Communications

The limited bandwidth of optical wireless communication (OWC) front-end devices motivates the use of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques to enhance data rates. It is known that very high multiplexing gains could be achieved by spatial multiplexing (SMX) in exchange for exhaustive detection complexity. Alternatively, in spatial modulation (SM), a single light emitting diode (LED) is activated per time instance where information is carried by both the signal and the LED index. Since only an LED is active, both transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) complexity reduces significantly while retaining the information transmission in the spatial domain. However, significant spectral efficiency losses occur in SM compared to SMX. In this paper, we propose a technique which adopts the advantages of both systems. Accordingly, the proposed flexible LED index modulation (FLIM) technique harnesses the inactive state of the LEDs as a transmit symbol. Therefore, the number of active LEDs changes in each transmission, unlike conventional techniques. Moreover, the system complexity is reduced by employing a linear minimum mean squared error (MMSE) equalizer and an angle perturbed receiver at the RX. Numerical results show that FLIM outperforms the reference systems by at least 6 dB in the low and medium/high spectral efficiency regions.

A Novel 3D Non-Stationary Channel Model for 6G Indoor Visible Light Communication Systems

The visible light communication (VLC) technology has attracted much attention in the research of the sixth generation (6G) communication systems. In this paper, a novel three dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for indoor VLC channels. The proposed VLC GBSM can capture unique indoor VLC channel characteristics such as the space-time-frequency non-stationarity caused by large light-emitting diode (LED) arrays in indoor scenarios, long travelling paths, and large bandwidths of visible light waves, respectively. In addition, the proposed model can support special radiation patterns of LEDs, 3D translational and rotational motions of the optical receiver (Rx), and can be applied to angle diversity receivers (ADRs). Key channel properties are simulated and analyzed, including the space-time-frequency correlation function (STFCF), received power, root mean square (RMS) delay spread, and path loss (PL). Simulation results verify the space-time-frequency non-stationarity in indoor VLC channels. Finally, the accuracy and practicality of the proposed model are validated by comparing the simulation result of channel 3dB bandwidth with the existing measurement data. The proposed channel model will play a supporting role in the design of future 6G VLC systems.

A Tb/s Indoor MIMO Optical Wireless Backhaul System Using VCSEL Arrays

In this paper, the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) optical wireless communication (OWC) link based on vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays is systematically carried out with the aim to support data rates in excess of 1 Tb/s for the backhaul of sixth generation (6G) indoor wireless networks. The proposed design combines direct current optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) and a spatial multiplexing MIMO architecture. For such an ultra-high-speed line-of-sight (LOS) OWC link with low divergence laser beams, maintaining alignment is of high importance. In this paper, two types of misalignment error between the transmitter and receiver are distinguished, namely, radial displacement error and orientation angle error, and they are thoroughly modeled in a unified analytical framework assuming Gaussian laser beams, resulting in a generalized misalignment model (GMM). The derived GMM is then extended to MIMO arrays and the performance of the MIMO-OFDM OWC system is analyzed in terms of the aggregate data rate. Novel insights are provided into the system performance based on computer simulations by studying various influential factors such as beam waist, array configuration and different misalignment errors, which can be used as guidelines for designing short range Tb/s MIMO OWC systems.

5 Gbps Optical Wireless Communication Using Commercial SPAD Array Receivers

Photon counting detectors such as single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays can be utilized to improve the sensitivity of optical wireless communication (OWC) systems. However, the achievable data rate of SPAD-based OWC systems is strongly limited by the nonlinearity induced by SPAD dead time. In this work, the performance of SPAD-based OWC system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is investigated and compared with that of on-off keying (OOK). We employ nonlinear equalization, peak-to-average power ratio optimization by adjusting the OFDM clipping level, and adaptive bit and energy loading to achieve a record experimental data rate of 5 Gbps. The contrasting optimal regimes of operation of the two modulation schemes are also demonstrated.

Double-Sided Beamforming in OWC Systems Using Omni-Digital Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

In this paper, we introduce a variant of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) called omni-digital-RISs (DRISs), which allow multiple physical processes, with application to optical wireless communications systems. The proposed omni-DRIS contains both reflectors and refractive elements, as well as elements that perform both simultaneously. We describe and explain the concept of omni-DRIS, suggest and analyze an omni-DRIS coding structure, discuss metamaterials to be used, and provide a design example. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the achievable rate of an omni-DRIS system depends on the number of omni-DRIS elements, bits per phase shift, and the number of unused elements. In addition, we show that the achievable rate upper bound is related to the number of omni-DRIS elements, and conclude by discussing future research directions.

Channel Modelling and Error Performance Investigation for Reading Lights Based In-flight LiFi

The new generation of communication technologies are constantly being pushed to meet a diverse range of user requirements such as high data rate, low power consumption, very low latency, very high reliability and broad availability. To address all these demands, 5G radio access technologies have been extended into a wide range of new services. However, there are still only a limited number of applications for RF based wireless communications inside aircraft cabins that comply with the 5G vision. Potential interference and safety issues in on-board wireless communications pose significant deployment challenges. By transforming each reading light into an optical wireless AP, LiFi, could provide seamless on-board connectivity in dense cabin environments without RF interference. Furthermore, the utilization of available reading lights allows for a relatively simple, cost-effective deployment with the high energy and spectral efficiency. To successfully implement the aeronautical cabin LiFi applications, comprehensive optical channel characterization is required. In this paper, we propose a novel MCRT channel modelling technique to capture the details of in-flight LiFi links. Accordingly, a realistic channel simulator, which takes the cabin models, interior elements and measurement based optical source, receiver, surface material characteristics into account is developed. The effect of the operation wavelength, cabin model accuracy and user terminal mobility on the optical channel conditions is also investigated. As a final step, the on-board DCO-OFDM performance is evaluated by using obtained in-flight LiFi channels. Numerical results show that the location of a mobile terminal and accurate aircraft cabin modelling yield as much as 12 and 2 dB performance difference, respectively.

Digital RIS (DRIS): The Future of Digital Beam Management in RIS-Assisted OWC Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have been recently introduced to optical wireless communication (OWC) networks to resolve skip areas and improve the signal-to-noise ratio at the user's end. In OWC networks, RIS are based on mirrors or metasurfaces. Metasurfaces have evolved significantly over the last few years. As a result, coding, digital, programmable, and information metamaterials have been developed. The advantage of these materials is that they can enable digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. For the first time, this paper proposes the use of digital RIS (DRIS) in OWC systems. We discuss the concept of DRIS and the application of DSP methods to the physical material. In addition, we examine metamaterials for optical DRIS with liquid crystals serving as the front row material. Finally, we present a design example and discuss future research directions.

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for Enhanced NOMA-based Visible Light Communications

The emerging intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology introduces the potential of controlled light propagation in visible light communication (VLC) systems. This concept opens the door for new applications in which the channel itself can be altered to achieve specific key performance indicators. In this paper, for the first time in the open literature, we investigate the role that IRSs can play in enhancing the link reliability in VLC systems employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We propose a framework for the joint optimisation of the NOMA and IRS parameters and show that it provides significant enhancements in link reliability. The enhancement is even more pronounced when the VLC channel is subject to blockage and random device orientation.

A VCSEL Array Transmission System with Novel Beam Activation Mechanisms

Optical wireless communication (OWC) is considered to be a promising technology which will alleviate traffic burden caused by the increasing number of mobile devices. In this study, a novel vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) array is proposed for indoor OWC systems. To activate the best beam for a mobile user, two beam activation methods are proposed for the system. The method based on a corner-cube retroreflector (CCR) provides very low latency and allows real-time activation for high-speed users. The other method uses the omnidirectional transmitter (ODTx). The ODTx can serve the purpose of uplink transmission and beam activation simultaneously. Moreover, systems with ODTx are very robust to the random orientation of a user equipment (UE). System level analyses are carried out for the proposed VCSEL array system. For a single user scenario, the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the central beam of the VCSEL array system can be approximated as a uniform distribution. In addition, the average data rate of the central beam and its upper bound are given analytically and verified by Monte-Carlo simulations. For a multi-user scenario, an analytical upper bound for the average data rate is given. The effects of the cell size and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) angle on the system performance are studied. The results show that the system with a FWHM angle of $4^\circ$ outperforms the others.

Safety Analysis for Laser-based Optical Wireless Communications: A Tutorial

Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) sources have many advantages for use in high data rate optical wireless communications. In particular, the low cost and high-bandwidth properties of laser sources such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) make them attractive for future indoor optical wireless communications. In order to be integrated into future indoor networks, such lasers should conform to eye safety regulations determined by the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) standards for laser safety. In this paper, we provide a detailed study of beam propagation to evaluate the received power of various laser sources, based on which as well as the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) defined by the IEC 60825-1:2014 standard, we establish a comprehensive framework for eye safety analyses. This framework allows us to calculate the maximum allowable transmit power, which is crucial in the design of a reliable and safe laser-based wireless communication system. Initially, we consider a single-mode Gaussian beam and calculate the maximum permissible transmit power. Subsequently, we generalize this approach for higher-mode beams. It is shown that the M-squared-based approach for analysis of multimode lasers ensures the IEC eye safety limits, however, in some scenarios, it can be too conservative compared to the precise beam decomposition method. Laser safety analyses with consideration of optical elements such as lens and diffuser, as well as for VCSEL array have been also presented. Skin safety, as another significant factor of laser safety, has also been investigated in this paper. We have studied the impacts of various parameters such as wavelength, exposure duration and the divergence angle of laser sources on the safety analysis by presenting insightful results.

LiFi Through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: A New Frontier for 6G?

Light fidelity (LiFi), which is based on visible light communications (VLC), is celebrated as a cutting-edge technological paradigm that is envisioned to be an indispensable part of 6G systems. Nonetheless, LiFi performance is subject to efficiently overcoming the line-of-sight blockage, whose adverse effect on wireless reception reliability becomes even more pronounced in highly dynamic environments, such as vehicular application scenarios. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) emerged recently as a revolutionary concept that transfers the physical propagation environment into a fully controllable and customisable space in a low-cost low-power fashion. We anticipate that the integration of RIS in LiFi-enabled networks will not only support blockage mitigation but will also provision complex interactions among network entities, and is hence manifested as a promising platform that enables a plethora of technological trends and new applications. In this article, for the first time in the open literature, we set the scene for a holistic overview of RIS-assisted LiFi systems. Specifically, we explore the underlying RIS architecture from the perspective of physics and present a forward-looking vision that outlines potential operational elements supported by RIS-enabled transceivers and RIS-enabled environments. Finally, we highlight major associated challenges and offer a look ahead toward promising future directions.

Design of a Power Amplifying-RIS for Free-Space Optical Communication Systems

The steering dynamics of re-configurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have hoisted them to the front row of technologies that can be exploited to solve skip-zones in wireless communication systems. They can enable a programmable wireless environment, turning it into a partially deterministic space that plays an active role in determining how wireless signals propagate. However, RIS-based communication systems' practical implementation may face challenges such as noise generated by the RIS structure. Besides, the transmitted signal may face a double-fading effect over the two portions of the channel. This article tackles this double-fading problem in near-terrestrial free-space optical (nT-FSO) communication systems using a RIS module based upon liquid-crystal (LC) on silicon (LCoS). A doped LC layer can directly amplify a light when placed in an external field. Leveraging on this capacity of a doped LC, we mitigate the double-attenuation faced by the transmitted signal. We first revisit the nT-FSO power loss scenario, then discuss the direct-light amplification, and consider the system performance. Results show that at 51 degrees of the incoming light incidence angle, the proposed LCoS design has minimal RIS depth, implying less LC's material. The performance results show that the number of bit per unit bandwidth is upper-bounded and grows with the ratio of the sub-links distances. Finally, we present and discuss open issues to enable new research opportunities towards the use of RIS and amplifying-RIS in nT-FSO systems.

Performance Analysis of RIS-Based nT-FSO Link Over G-G Turbulence With Pointing Errors

One of the main problems faced by communication systems is the presence of skip-zones in the targeted areas. With the deployment of the fifth-generation mobile network, solutions are proposed to solve the signal loss due to obstruction by buildings, mountains, and atmospheric or weather conditions. Among these solutions, re-configurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which are newly proposed modules, may be exploited to reflect the incident signal in the direction of dead zones, increase communication coverage, and make the channel smarter and controllable. In this paper, we tackle the skip-zone problem in near-terrestrial free-space optical (nT-FSO) systems using RIS. We carry out a performance analysis of RIS-aided nT-FSO links affected by turbulence and pointing errors, for both heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation-direct detection (IM/DD) techniques. Turbulence is modeled using the Gamma-Gamma (G-G) distribution. We analyze the model and provide exact closed-form expressions of the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, and moment generating function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio, $γ$. Capitalizing on these statistics, we evaluate the system performance through the outage probability, $ P_{out} $, ergodic channel capacity, $\overline{C}$, and average bit-error-rate, $\overline{P}_b$, for selected binary modulation schemes. Numerical results obtained for different turbulence levels and pointing errors confirm that the HD technique outperforms IM/DD even in RIS-aided nT-FSO systems. These results also show that using a blue color offers better channel capacity and communication performance compared to red and green colors.

Re-configurable Intelligent Surface-based VLC Receivers Using Tunable Liquid-crystals: The Concept

Visible light communication (VLC) enables access to huge unlicensed bandwidth, a higher security level, and no radio frequency interference. With these advantages, VLC emerges as a complementary solution to radio frequency communications. VLC systems have primarily been designed for indoor scenarios with typical transmission distances between 2 and 5 m. Different designs would be required for larger distances. This paper proposes for the first time the use of a liquid crystal (LC)-based re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS) on improving the VLC signal detection and transmission range. An LC-based RIS presents multiple advantages, including the tunability of its photo-refractive parameters. Another advantage is its light amplification capabilities when under the influence of an externally applied field. In this paper, we analyze an LC-based RIS structure to amplify the detected light and improve the VLC signal detection and transmission range. Results show that mixing LC with 4 to 8 wt\% concentration of a dye such as the terthiophene (3T-2MB) improves the VLC transmission range of about 0.20 to 1.08 m. This improvement can reach 6.56 m if we combine 8 wt\% concentration of 3T-2MB and 0.1 wt\% concentration of trinitrofluorenone.
