Model of the Electronic Structure of Electron-Doped Iron-Based Superconductors: Evidence for Enhanced Spin Fluctuations by Diagonal Electron Hopping

We present a theoretical understanding of the superconducting phase diagram of the electron-doped iron pnictides. We show that, besides the Fermi surface nesting, a peculiar motion of electrons, where the next nearest neighbor (diagonal) hoppings between iron sites dominate over the nearest neighbor ones, plays an important role in the enhancement of the spin fluctuation and thus superconductivity. In the highest $T_c$ materials, the crossover between the Fermi surface nesting and this "prioritized diagonal motion" regime occurs smoothly with doping, while in relatively low $T_c$ materials, the two regimes are separated and therefore results in a double dome $T_c$ phase diagram.

High critical-current density with less anisotropy in BaFe2(As,P)2 epitaxial thin films: Effect of intentionally grown c-axis vortex-pinning centers

We report herein a high and isotropic critical-current density Jc for BaFe2(As,P)2 epitaxial films. The isotropy of Jc with respect to the magnetic-field direction was improved significantly by decreasing the film growth rate to 2.2 Å/s. The low growth rate served to preferentially align dislocations along the c-axis, which work well as c-axis vortex-pinning centers. Because of the intentional introduction of effective pinning, the absolute Jc at 9 T was larger than that obtained for other iron-based superconductors and conventional alloy superconducting wires.

Hydrogen Ordering and New Polymorph of Layered Perovskite Oxyhydrides: Sr2VO4-xHx

Compositionally tunable vanadium oxyhydrides Sr2VO4-xHx (x = 0 - 1) without considerable anion vacancy were synthesized by high-pressure solid state reaction. The crystal structures and their properties were characterized by powder neutron diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The hydrogen anions selectively replaced equatorial oxygen sites in the VO6 layers via statistical substitution of hydrogen in the low x region (x < 0.2). A new orthorhombic phase (Immm) with an almost entirely hydrogen-ordered structure formed from the K2NiF4-type tetragonal phase with x > 0.7. Based on the DFT calculations, the degree of oxygen/hydrogen anion ordering is strongly correlated with the bonding interaction between vanadium and the ligands.

Layered Compounds BaM2Ge4Ch6 (M = Rh, Ir and Ch = S, Se) with Pyrite-Type Building Blocks and Ge-Ch Heteromolecule-Like Anions

Structure and chemical features of layered compounds BaM2Ge4Ch6 (M = Rh, Ir; Ch = S, Se) synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature method are systematically studied. These compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic phase with space group Pbca (No. 61). The remarkable structural feature is to have the M-Ge-Ch pyrite-type building units, stacking with Ba-Ch layers alternatively along c axis. It is very rare and novel that pyrite-type subunits as the building blocks in the layered compounds. Theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that there are strongly polarized covalent bonds between Ge and Ch atoms, forming heteromolecule-like anions in these compounds. Moreover, Ge atoms in this structure exhibit unusual valence state (~ +1) due to the tetrahedral coordination environment of Ge atoms along with M and Ch atoms simultaneously.

Critical factor for epitaxial growth of cobalt-doped BaFe2As2 films by pulsed laser deposition

We heteroepitaxially grew cobalt-doped BaFe2As2 films on (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 single-crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition using four different wavelengths and investigated how the excitation wavelength and pulse energy affected growth. Using the tilting and twisting angles of X-ray diffraction rocking curves, we quantitatively analyzed the crystallinity of each film. We found that the optimal deposition rate, which could be tuned by pulse energy, was independent of laser wavelength. The high-quality film grown at the optimal pulse energy (i.e., the optimum deposition rate) exhibited high critical current density over 1 MA/cm2 irrespective of the laser wavelength.

Bipartite magnetic parent phases in the iron-oxypnictide superconductor

High-temperature (high-$T_{\rm c}$) superconductivity appears as a consequence of the carrier-doping of an undoped parent compound exhibiting antiferromagnetic order; thereby, ground-state properties of the parent compound are closely relevant to the superconducting state. On the basis of the concept, a spin-fluctuation has been addressed as an origin of pairing of the superconducting electrons in cuprates. Whereas, there is growing interest in the pairing mechanism such as an unconventional spin-fluctuation or an advanced orbital-fluctuation due to the characteristic multi-orbital system in iron-pnictides. Here, we report the discovery of an antiferromagnetic order as well as a unique structural transition in electron-overdoped LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ ($x$ ~ 0.5), whereby another parent phase was uncovered, albeit heavily doped. The unprecedented two-dome superconducting phases observed in this material can be interpreted as a consequence of the carrier-doping starting from the original at $x\sim0$ and advanced at $x\sim0.5$ parent phases toward the intermediate region. The bipartite parent phases with distinct physical properties in the second magnetic phase provide us with an interesting example to illustrate the intimate interplay among the magnetic interaction, structural change and orbital degree of freedom in iron-pnictides.

Superconductivity of Ca2InN with a layered structure embedding an anionic indium chain array

We report the emergence of superconductivity in Ca2InN consisting of a 2-dimensional (2D) array of zigzag indium chains embedded between Ca2N layers. A sudden drop of resistivity and a specific-heat (Cp) jump attributed to the superconducting transition were observed at 0.6 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ= 4.24 mJ/mol K2 and Debye temperature ΘD = 322 K were determined from the Cp of the normal conducting state and the superconducting volume fraction was estimated to be ~80% from the Cp jump, assuming a BCS-type weak coupling. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the electronic bands near the Fermi level (EF) are mainly derived from In 5p orbitals with π and σ bonding states and the Fermi surface is composed of cylindrical parts, corresponding to the quasi-2D electronic state of the In chain array. By integrating the projected density of states of In-p component up to EF, a valence electron population of ~1.6 electrons/In was calculated, indicating that the partially anionic state of In. The In 3d binding energies observed in Ca2InN by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy were negatively shifted from that in In metal. The superconductivity of Ca2InN is associated with the p-p bonding states of the anionic In layer.

Electric double-layer transistor using layered iron selenide Mott insulator TlFe1.6Se2

A1-xFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl) are recently discovered iron-based superconductors with critical temperatures (Tc) ranging up to 32 K. Their parent phases have unique properties when compared with other iron-based superconductors; e.g., their crystal structures include ordered Fe vacancies, their normal states are antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases, and they have extremely high Néel transition temperatures. However, control of carrier doping into the parent AFM insulators has been difficult due to their intrinsic phase separation. Here, we fabricated an Fe-vacancy-ordered TlFe1.6Se2 insulating epitaxial film with an atomically flat surface and examined its electrostatic carrier doping using an electric double-layer transistor (EDLT) structure with an ionic liquid gate. The positive gate voltage gave conductance modulation of three orders of magnitude at 25 K, and further induced and manipulated a phase transition; i.e., delocalized carrier generation by electrostatic doping is the origin of the phase transition. This is the first demonstration, to the authors' knowledge, of an EDLT using a Mott insulator iron-selenide channel and opens a way to explore high-Tc superconductivity in iron-based layered materials, where carrier doping by conventional chemical means is difficult.

Enhancing the three-dimensional electronic structure in 1111-type iron arsenide superconductors by H-substitution

The 1111-type iron arsenide hydride CaFe1-xCoxAsH was synthesized by high-pressure solid-state reaction, and its electronic structure and superconducting properties were investigated. Bulk superconductivity was observed at x = 0.07-0.26. A maximum superconducting critical temperature Tcmax of 23 K was observed at x = 0.07. These values are in agreement with those of CaFe1-xCoxAsF. The calculated Fermi surface of CaFeAsH has a small three-dimensional 3D hole pocket around the Gamma point. This is a result of weak covalent bonding between the As 4p and H 1s orbitals. No such covalency exists in CaFeAsF, because the energy level of the F 2p orbital is sufficiently deep to inhibit overlap with the As 4p orbital. The similar superconducting properties of CaFe1-xCoxAsH and CaFe1-xCoxAsF are explained on the nesting scenario. The small 3D hole pocket of CaFe1-xCoxAsH does not significantly contribute to electron excitation. These findings encourage exploration of hydrogen-containing 1111-type iron-based materials with lower anisotropies and higher Tc applicable to superconducting wires and tapes.

La-substituted CaFeAsH superconductor with Tc = 47 K

La-substituted CaFeAsH,(Ca1-xLax)FeAsH, were synthesized by the solid state reaction at 1173 K under high pressure of 2.5 GPa. The r-T anomaly corresponding to tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition was suppressed by La-substitution and then the superconductivity was observed at an electron doping content of Ne > 0.05. The maximum onset Tc of 47.4 K was reached for Ne = 0.18, which is significant increase compared to 23 K achieved by direct electron doping to the FeAs-layer via Co-substitution to the Fe-site. This value of Tc value fits well to the phenomenological relation between Tc and the bond angle of As-Fe-As in indirectly electron doped LnFeAsO (Ln = Lanthanide). These results indicate that the electron was doped via the indirect mode through the aliovalent ion substitution to CaH-layer (Ca2+ La3+ + e-).

Controlling Factors of Tc-Dome Structure in 1111-Type Iron Arsenide Superconductors

We investigated the effects of phosphorus substitution on the shape of the Tc(x) dome in 1111-type SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx (0 < x < 0.5). Hydride ion substitution of oxide sites (O2- -> H-) exerts a chemical pressure effect, i.e., a structural reduction of the Pn-Fe-Pn angle α (Pn = P, As) and also dopes electrons into the FePn layer to induce superconductivity. Isovalent phosphorus substitution (P3- -> As3-) can induce only a chemical pressure effect, i.e., an increase of α for La-substitution of Sm-sites. As y increases from 0.0 to 0.5, the single Tc dome gradually splits into two domes, similar to those of LaFeAsO1-xHx with a Tc valley at x ~ 0.16. We found that the Tc valley is located around (x, α) ~ (0.16, 113°) for both SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx and LaFeAsO1-xHx series, irrespective of changes in the Pn anion and Ln cation species. This result suggests that suppression of Tc leads to the emergence of a Tc valley when both the shape of FePn4 tetrahedra represented by α and electron doping level of x meet the above criterion in 1111 type iron oxypnictide superconductors.

Epitaxial Growth and Electronic Structure of a Layered Zinc Pnictide Semiconductor, beta-BaZn2As2

BaZn2As2 is expected for a good p-type semiconductor and has two crystalline phases of an orthorhombic alpha phase and a higher-symmetry tetragonal beta phase. Here, we report high-quality epitaxial films of the tetragonal beta-BaZn2As2 were grown on single-crystal MgO (001) substrates by a reactive solid-phase epitaxy technique. Out-of-plane and in-plane epitaxial relationships between the film and the substrate were BaZn2As2 (00l)//MgO (001) and BaZn2As2 [200]//MgO [200], respectively. The full-widths at half maximum were 0.082o for a 008 out-of-plane rocking curve and 0.342o for a 200 in-plane rocking curve. A step-and-terrace structure was observed by atomic force microscopy. The band gap of beta-BaZn2As2 was evaluated to be around 0.2 eV, which is much smaller than that of a family compound LaZnOAs (1.5 eV). Density functional theory calculation using the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functionals supports the small band gap.

Structural, Magnetic, and Electrical Properties of Li2Ir1-xRuxO3

The crystal structure, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility of the Li2Ir1-xRuxO3 (x = 0-1) polycrystals have been investigated. We found that the parent antiferromagnetic phase disappears for x > 0.2 and bond dimers appear in the averaged structure for x > 0.5 and likely fluctuate for much smaller x. Unexpectedly, this system remains insulating for all the doping levels, in sharp contrast with the robust metallic state found in Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4. These results demonstrate that the essential physics of the doped A2IrO3 (A = Li, Na) system deviates significantly from the common one-band jeff=1/2 spin-orbit model.

Unusual pressure effects on the superconductivity of indirectly electron-doped (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2 epitaxial films

Applying an external pressure to indirectly electron-doped 122-type (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2 epitaxial films enhances the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) up to 30.3 K. Different from the other family compounds, the Tc is enhanced not only in the under-doped region but also in the optimally doped and over-doped regions. Narrowing of the superconducting transition width and an increase in the carrier density take place simultaneously in the whole doping region, except at the heavily over-doped limit. This characteristic is unique to and observed only in (Ba1-xLax)Fe2As2, in which the La doping is stabilized via non-equilibrium growth of the vapor phase epitaxy, among the 122-type iron-based superconductors, AFe2As2 (A = Ba, Sr, and Ca).

Superconductivity in 1111-type CaFeAsF1-xHx induced by selective hydrogen elimination

The difference in thermal stability of F- and H- in 1111-type iron based superconductors, allows selective hydrogen elimination from non-superconductive CaFeAsF0.8H0.2 by thermal annealing. The analyzed chemical composition of the resulting samples indicates that incorporated hydrogen was selectively eliminated by thermal annealing at 553 K for 72 hours. The resulting hydrogen-eliminated sample shows bulk superconductivity with Tc = 29 K. This technique may be used for indirect electron doping for AeFeAeF (Ae; alkali-earth metal) iron based superconductor described by CaFeAsF1-xHx => CaFeAsF1-x + xe- + 1/2xH2.

Switching of intra-orbital spin excitations in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors

We investigate the doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in two-superconducting-dome-system LaFeAsO1-xDx. Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic doping dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron doping. The present results imply that the multi-orbital nature plays an important role in the doping and / or material dependence of the Tc of the iron pnictide superconductors.

Robust spin fluctuations and $s\pm$ pairing in the heavily electron doped iron-based superconductors

We theoretically study the spin fluctuation and superconductivity in La1111 and Sm1111 iron-based superconductors for a wide range of electron doping. When we take into account the band structure variation by electron doping, the hole Fermi surface originating from the $d_{X^2-Y^2}$ orbital turns out to be robust against electron doping, and this gives rise to large spin fluctuations and consequently $s\pm$ pairing even in the heavily doped regime. The stable hole Fermi surface is larger for Sm1111 than for La1111, which can be considered as the origin of the apparent difference in the phase diagram.

Magnetic scattering and electron pair breaking by rare-earth-ion substitution in BaFe2As2 epitaxial films

The effect of electron doping by trivalent charge state rare-earth ion (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) substitutions on the superconductivity in BaFe2As2 was examined using epitaxial films. Each of the RE substitutions suppressed the resistivity anomaly associated with the magnetic/structural phase transitions, leading to the resistivity drops and superconductivity transitions. Bulk superconductivity was observed at the maximum onset critical temperature (Tconset) of 22.4 K for La-doping and 13.4 K for Ce-doping, while only broad resistivity drops were observed at 6.2 K for Pr-doping and 5.8 K for Nd-doping but neither zero resistivity nor distinct Meissner effect were observed at least down to 2 K. The decrease in Tconset with increasing the number of RE 4f electrons cannot be explained in terms of the crystalline qualities or crystallographic structure parameters of the BaFe2As2 films. It was clarified, based on resistivity-temperature analyses, that magnetic scattering became increasingly significant in the above order of the RE dopants. The negative magnetoresistance was enhanced by the Ce- and Pr-doping, implying that the decrease in Tc originates from magnetic pair breaking by interaction of the localized 4f orbitals in the RE dopants with the itinerant Fe 3d orbitals.
