Femtosecond Coherent Control of Spin with Light in (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnets

Using density matrix equations of motion, we predict a femtosecond collective spin tilt triggered by nonlinear, near--ultraviolet ($\sim$3eV), coherent photoexcitation of (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic semiconductors with linearly polarized light. This dynamics results from carrier coherences and nonthermal populations excited in the \{111\} equivalent directions of the Brillouin zone and triggers a subsequent uniform precession. We predict nonthermal magnetization control by tuning the laser frequency and polarization direction. Our mechanism explains recent ultrafast pump--probe experiments.

Magnetization Relaxation and Collective Spin Excitations in Correlated Double--Exchange Ferromagnets

We study spin relaxation and dynamics of collective spin excitations in correlated double--exchange ferromagnets. For this, we introduce an expansion of the Green's functions equations of motion that treats non--perturbativerly all correlations between a given number of spin and charge excitations and becomes exact within a sub--space of states. Our method treats relaxation beyond Fermi's Golden Rule while recovering previous variational results for the spin--wave dispersion. We find that the momentum dependence of the spin--wave dephasing rate changes qualitatively due to the on--site Coulomb interaction, in a way that resembles experiment, and depends on its interplay with the magnetic exchange interaction and itinerant spin lifetime. We show that the collective spin relaxation and its dependence on the carrier concentration depends sensitively on three--body correlations between a spin excitation and a Fermi sea electron and hole. The above spin dynamics can be controlled via the itinerant carrier population.

Spin dynamics in (III,Mn)V ferromagnetic semiconductors: the role of correlations

We address the role of correlations between spin and charge degrees of freedom on the dynamical properties of ferromagnetic systems governed by the magnetic exchange interaction between itinerant and localized spins. For this we introduce a general theory that treats quantum fluctuations beyond the Random Phase Approximation based on a correlation expansion of the Green's function equations of motion. We calculate the spin susceptibility, spin--wave excitation spectrum, and magnetization precession damping. We find that correlations strongly affect the magnitude and carrier concentration dependence of the spin stiffness and magnetization Gilbert damping.

Observation of inter-Landau-level quantum coherence in semiconductor quantum wells

Using three-pulse four-wave-mixing femtosecond spectroscopy, we excite a non-radiative coherence between the discrete Landau levels of an undoped quantum well and study its dynamics. We observe quantum beats that reflect the time evolution of the coherence between the two lowest Landau level magnetoexcitons. We interpret our observations using a many-body theory and find that the inter Landau level coherence decays with a new time constant, substantially longer than the corresponding interband magnetoexciton dephasing times. Our results indicate a new intraband excitation dynamics that cannot be described in terms of uncorrelated interband excitations.

Memory Effect in the Photoinduced Femtosecond Rotation of Magnetization in the Ferromagnetic Semiconductor GaMnAs

We report a femtosecond response in photoinduced magnetization rotation in the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs, which allows for detection of a four-state magnetic memory at the femtosecond time scale. The temporal profile of this cooperative magnetization rotation exhibits a discontinuity that reveals two distinct temporal regimes, marked by the transition from a highly non-equilibrium, carrier-mediated regime within the first 200 fs, to a thermal, lattice-heating picosecond regime.

Femtosecond Control of the Magnetization in Ferromagnetic Semiconductors

We develop a theory of collective spin dynamics triggered by ultrafast optical excitation of ferromagnetic semiconductors. Using the density matrix equations of motion in the mean field approximation and including magnetic anisotropy and hole spin dephasing effects, we predict the development of a light--induced magnetization tilt during ultra--short time intervals comparable to the pulse duration. This femtosecond dynamics in the coherent temporal regime is governed by the interband nonlinear optical polarizations and is followed by a second temporal regime governed by the magnetic anisotropy of the Fermi sea. We interpret our numerical results by deriving a Landau--Gilbert--like equation for the collective spin, which demonstrates an ultrafast correction to the magnetic anisotropy effective field due to second order coherent nonlinear optical processes. Using the Lindblad semigroup method, we also derive a contribution to the interband polarization dephasing determined by the Mn spin and the hole spin dephasing. Our predicted magnetization tilt and subsequent nonlinear dynamics due to the magnetic anisotropy can be controlled by varying the optical pulse intensity, duration, and helicity and can be observed with pump--probe magneto--optical spectroscopy.

Coherent Magnetization Precession in GaMnAs induced by Ultrafast Optical Excitation

We use femtosecond optical pulses to induce, control and monitor magnetization precession in ferromagnetic Ga0.965Mn0.035As. At temperatures below ~40 K we observe coherent oscillations of the local Mn spins, triggered by an ultrafast photoinduced reorientation of the in-plane easy axis. The amplitude saturation of the oscillations above a certain pump intensity indicates that the easy axis remains unchanged above ~TC/2. We find that the observed magnetization precession damping (Gilbert damping) is strongly dependent on pump laser intensity, but largely independent on ambient temperature. We provide a physical interpretation of the observed light-induced collective Mn-spin relaxation and precession.

Non--Heisenberg Spin Dynamics of Double-Exchange Ferromagnets with Coulomb Repulsion

With a variational three--body calculation we study the role of the interplay between the onsite Coulomb, Hund's rule, and superexchange interactions on the spinwave excitation spectrum of itinerant ferromagnets. We show that correlations between a Fermi sea electron--hole pair and a magnon result in a very pronounced zone boundary softening and strong deviations from the Heisenberg spinwave dispersion. We show that this spin dynamics depends sensitively on the Coulomb and exchange interactions and discuss its possible relevance to experiments in the manganites.

Three--body Correlation Effects on the Spin Dynamics of Double--Exchange Ferromagnets

We present a variational calculation of the spin wave excitation spectrum of double--exchange ferromagnets in different dimensions. Our theory recovers the Random Phase approximation and 1/S expansion results as limiting cases and can be used to study the intermediate exchange coupling and electron concentration regime relevant to the manganites. In particular, we treat exactly the long range three--body correlations between a Fermi sea electron--hole pair and a magnon excitation and show that they strongly affect the spin dynamics in the parameter range relevant to experiments in the manganites. The manifestations of these correlations are many-fold. We demonstrate that they significantly change the ferromagnetic phase boundary. In addition to a decrease in the magnon stiffness, we obtain an instability of the ferromagnetic state against spin wave excitations close to the Brillouin zone boundary.Within a range of intermediate concentrations, we find a strong softening of the spin wave dispersion as compared to the Heisenberg ferromagnet with the same stiffness, which changes into hardening for other concentrations. We discuss the relevance of these results to experiments in colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnets.

Nonlinear Optical studies of the Transient Coherence in the Quantum Hall System

We review recent investigations of the femtosecond non-linear optical response of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a strong magnetic field. We probe the Quantum Hall (QH) regime for filling factors $ν\sim 1$. Our focus is on the transient coherence induced via optical excitation and on its time evolution during early femtosecond timescales. We simultaneously study the interband and intraband coherence in this system by using a nonlinear spectroscopic technique, transient three-pulse four wave mixing optical spectroscopy, and a many-body theory. We observe striking differences in the temporal and spectral profile of the nonlinear optical signal between a modulation doped quantum well system (with the 2DEG) and a similar undoped quantum well (without a 2DEG). We attribute these qualitative differences to Coulomb correlations between the photoexcited electron-hole pairs and the 2DEG. We show, in particular, that intraband many-particle coherences assisted by the inter-Landau-level magnetoplasmon excitations of the 2DEG dominate the femtosecond nonlinear optical responce. The most striking effect of these exciton-magnetoplasmon coherences is a large off-resonant four-wave-mixing signal in the case of very low photoexcited carrier densities, not observed in the undoped system, with strong temporal oscillations and unusually symmetric temporal profile.

Ultrafast dynamics of coherences in the quantum Hall system

Using three-pulse four-wave-mixing optical spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast dynamics of the quantum Hall system. We observe striking differences as compared to an undoped system, where the 2D electron gas is absent. In particular, we observe a large off-resonant signal with strong oscillations. Using a microscopic theory, we show that these are due to many-particle coherences created by interactions between photoexcited carriers and collective excitations of the 2D electron gas. We extract quantitative information about the dephasing and interference of these coherences.

Theory of ultrafast exciton dynamics in the Quantum Hall system

We discuss a theory of the ultrafast non-linear optical response of excitons in the Quantum Hall system. Our theory focusses on the role of the low energy collective electronic excitations of the cold, strongly correlated, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) present in the ground state. It takes into account ground state electron correlations and Pauli exchange and interaction effects between the photoexcited excitons and the collective excitations. Our formulation addresses both the initial coherent regime, where the dynamics is determined by exciton and 2DEG polarizations, and the subsequent incoherent regime, dominated by population dynamics. We describe non-Markovian memory, dephasing, and correlation effects and a non-linear exciton hybridization due to the non-instantaneous interactions. We identify the signature of the coherent inter-Landau level magnetoplasmon (MP) in the temporal profile of the three-pulse time-integrated four-wave-mixing signal in the initial coherent regime.

Ultrafast light-induced magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic semiconductors

We develop a theory of the magnetization dynamics triggered by ultrafast optical excitation of ferromagnetic semiconductors. We describe the effects of the strong carrier spin relaxation on the nonlinear optical response by using the Lindblad semigroup method. We demonstrate magnetization control during femtosecond timescales via the interplay between circularly polarized optical excitation, hole-spin damping, polarization dephasing, and the Mn-hole spin interactions. Our results show a light-induced magnetization precession and relaxation for the duration of the optical pulse.

Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Response of Strongly Correlated Systems: Dynamics in the Quantum Hall Effect Regime

We present a theoretical formulation of the coherent ultrafast nonlinear optical response of a strongly correlated system and discuss an example where the Coulomb correlations dominate. We separate out the correlated contributions to the third-order nonlinear polarization, and identify non-Markovian dephasing effects coming from the non-instantaneous interactions and propagation in time of the collective excitations of the many-body system. We discuss the signatures, in the time and frequency dependence of the four-wave-mixing (FWM) spectrum, of the inter-Landau level magnetoplasmon (MP) excitations of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a perpendicular magnetic field. We predict a resonant enhancement of the lowest Landau level (LL) FWM signal, a strong non-Markovian dephasing of the next LL magnetoexciton (X), a symmetric FWM temporal profile, and strong oscillations as function of time delay, of quantum kinetic origin. We show that the correlation effects can be controlled experimentally by tuning the central frequency of the optical excitation between the two lowest LLs.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Interfacial Electric Fields in Semiconductor Heterostructures Monitored by Pump-Probe Second Harmonic Generation

We report first measurements of the ultrafast dynamics of interfacial electric fields in semiconductor multilayers using pump-probe second harmonic generation (SHG). A pump beam was tuned to excite carriers in all layers of GaAs/GaSb and GaAs/GaSb/InAs heterostructures. Further carrier dynamics manifests itself via electric fields created by by charge separation at interfaces. The evolution of interfacial fields is monitored by a probe beam through the eletric-field-induced SHG signal. We distinguish between several stages of dynamics originating from redistribution of carriers between the layers. We also find a strong enhancement of the induced electric field caused by hybridization of the conduction and valence bands at the GaSb/InAs interface.

Ultrafast Spin Dynamics in GaAs/GaSb/InAs Heterostructures Probed by Second Harmonic Generation

We report the first application of pump-probe second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements to characterize optically-induced magnetization in non-magnetic multilayer semiconductors. In the experiment, coherent spins are selectively excited by a pump beam in the GaAs layer of GaAs/GaSb/InAs structures. However, the resulting net magnetization manifests itself through the induced SHG probe signal from the GaSb/InAs interface, thus indicating a coherent spin transport across the heterostructure. We find that the magnetization dynamics is governed by an interplay between the spin density evolution at the interfaces and the spin dephasing.

Luminescence from highly excited nanorings: Luttinger liquid description

We study theoretically the luminescence from quantum dots of a ring geometry. For high excitation intensities, photoexcited electrons and holes form Fermi seas. Close to the emission threshold, the single-particle spectral lines aquire weak many-body satellites. However, away from the threshold, the discrete luminescence spectrum is completely dominated by many-body transitions. We employ the Luttinger liquid approach to exactly calculate the intensities of all many-body spectral lines. We find that the transition from single-particle to many-body structure of the emission spectrum is governed by a single parameter and that the distribution of peaks away from the threshold is universal.

Spin dynamics in nonlinear optical spectroscopy of Fermi sea systems

We discuss the role of many-body spin correlations in nonlinear optical response of a Fermi sea system with a deep impurity level. Due to the Hubbard repulsion between electrons at the impurity, the optical transitions between the impurity level and the Fermi sea states lead to an optically-induced Kondo effect. In particular, the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility logarithmiclly diverges at the absorption threshold. The shape of the pump-probe spectrum is governed by the light-induced Kondo temperature, which can be tuned by varying the intensity and frequency of the pump optical field. In the Kondo limit, corresponding to off-resonant pump excitation, the nonlinear absorption spectrum exhibits a narrow peak below the linear absorption onset.
