Deconfinement Phase Transition in a 3D Nonlocal U(1) Lattice Gauge Theory

We introduce a 3D compact U(1) lattice gauge theory having nonlocal interactions in the temporal direction, and study its phase structure. The model is relevant for the compact QED$_3$ and strongly correlated electron systems like the t-J model of cuprates. For a power-law decaying long-range interaction, which simulates the effect of gapless matter fields, a second-order phase transition takes place separating the confinement and deconfinement phases. For an exponentially decaying interaction simulating matter fields with gaps, the system exhibits no signals of a second-order transition.

Self-Duality and Phase Structure of the 4D Random-Plaquette Z_2 Gauge Model

In the present paper, we shall study the 4-dimensional Z_2 lattice gauge model with a random gauge coupling; the random-plaquette gauge model(RPGM). The random gauge coupling at each plaquette takes the value J with the probability 1-p and -J with p. This model exhibits a confinement-Higgs phase transition. We numerically obtain a phase boundary curve in the (p-T)-plane where T is the "temperature" measured in unit of J/k_B. This model plays an important role in estimating the accuracy threshold of a quantum memory of a toric code. In this paper, we are mainly interested in its "self-duality" aspect, and the relationship with the random-bond Ising model(RBIM) in 2-dimensions. The "self-duality" argument can be applied both for RPGM and RBIM, giving the same duality equations, hence predicting the same phase boundary. The phase boundary curve obtained by our numerical simulation almost coincides with this predicted phase boundary at the high-temperature region. The phase transition is of first order for relatively small values of p < 0.08, but becomes of second order for larger p. The value of p at the intersection of the phase boundary curve and the Nishimori line is regarded as the accuracy threshold of errors in a toric quantum memory. It is estimated as p=0.110\pm0.002, which is very close to the value conjectured by Takeda and Nishimori through the "self-duality" argument.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breakings in $Z_2$ Gauge Theories for Doped Quantum Dimer and Eight-Vertex Models

Behavior of doped fermions in $Z_2$ gauge theories for the quantum dimer and eight-vertex models is studied. Fermions carry charge and spin degrees of freedom. In the confinement phase of the $Z_2$ gauge theories, these internal symmetries are spontaneously broken and a superconducting or Neél state appears. On the other hand in the deconfinement-topologically-ordered state, all symmetries are respected. From the view point of the quantum dimer and eight-vertex models, this result indicates interplay of the phase structure of the doped fermions and background configuration of the dimer or the eight-vertex groundstate. At the quantum phase transitions in these systems, structure of the doped-fermions groundstate and also that of the background dimer or eight-vertex groundstate both change. Translational symmetry breaking induces a superconducting or antiferromagnetic state of the doped fermions.

Néel-Dimer Transition in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model and Deconfinement of Spinons at the Critical Point

Quantum phase transition from the Néel to the dimer states in an antiferromagnetic(AF) Heisenberg model on square lattice is studied. We introduce a control parameter $α$ for the exchange coupling which connects the Néel ($α=0$) and the dimer ($α=1$) states. We employ the $CP^1$ (the Schwinger boson) representation of the $s={1\over 2}$ spin operator and integrate out the half of the $CP^1$ variables at odd sites and we obtain a $CP^1$ nonlinear $σ$ model. The effective coupling constant is a function of $α$ and at $α=0$ the $CP^1$ model is in the ordered phase which corresponds to the Néel state of the AF Heisenberg model. A phase transition to the dimer state occurs at a certain critical value of $α_C$ as $α$ increases. In the Néel state, the dynamical composite U(1) gauge field in the $CP^1$ model is in a Higgs phase and low-energy excitations are gapless spin wave. In the dimer phase, a confinement phase of the gauge theory is realized and low-energy excitations are $s=1$ magnons. For the critical point, we argue that a deconfinement phase, which is similar to the Coulomb phase in 3 spatial dimensions, is realized and $s={1\over 2}$ spinons appear as low-energy excitations.

Phase Structure of the Random-Plaquette Z_2 Gauge Model: Accuracy Threshold for a Toric Quantum Memory

We study the phase structure of the random-plaquette Z_2 lattice gauge model in three dimensions. In this model, the "gauge coupling" for each plaquette is a quenched random variable that takes the value βwith the probability 1-p and -βwith the probability p. This model is relevant for the recently proposed quantum memory of toric code. The parameter p is the concentration of the plaquettes with "wrong-sign" couplings -β, and interpreted as the error probability per qubit in quantum code. In the gauge system with p=0, i.e., with the uniform gauge couplings β, it is known that there exists a second-order phase transition at a certain critical "temperature", T(\equiv β^{-1}) = T_c =1.31, which separates an ordered(Higgs) phase at T T_c. As p increases, the critical temperature T_c(p) decreases. In the p-T plane, the curve T_c(p) intersects with the Nishimori line T_{N}(p) at the certain point (p_c, T_{N}(p_c)). The value p_c is just the accuracy threshold for a fault-tolerant quantum memory and associated quantum computations. By the Monte-Carlo simulations, we calculate the specific heat and the expectation values of the Wilson loop to obtain the phase-transition line T_c(p) numerically. The accuracy threshold is estimated as p_c \simeq 0.033.

Z_N Gauge Theories on a Lattice and Quantum Memory

In the present paper we shall study (2+1) dimensional Z_N gauge theories on a lattice. It is shown that the gauge theories have two phases, one is a Higgs phase and the other is a confinement phase. We investigate low-energy excitation modes in the Higgs phase and clarify relationship between the Z_N gauge theories and Kitaev's model for quantum memory and quantum computations. Then we study effects of random gauge couplings(RGC) which are identified with noise and errors in quantum computations by Kitaev's model. By using a duality transformation, it is shown that time-independent RGC give no significant effects on the phase structure and the stability of quantum memory and computations. Then by using the replica methods, we study Z_N gauge theories with time-dependent RGC and show that nontrivial phase transitions occur by the RGC.

Gross-Neveu model with overlap fermions

We investigate the chiral properties of overlap lattice fermion by using two dimensional Gross-Neveu model coupled with a gauge field. Chiral properties of this model are similar to those of QCD$_4$, that is, the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of small but finite fermion mass and also there appears the chiral anomaly because of the coupling with the gauge field. In order to respect Lüscher's extended chiral symmetry we insert overlap Dirac operator even in the interaction terms so that the whole action including them are invariant under the extended chiral transformation at {\em finite lattice spacing}, though the interaction terms become nonlocal. We calculate mass of the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone boson as a function of the bare fermion mass and two parameters in the overlap formalism, and find that the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone boson has desired properties as a result of the extended chiral symmetry. We furthermore examine the PCAC relation and find that it is satisfied at {\em finite lattice spacing}. Relationship between the anomaly term in the PCAC relation and the U(1) problem is also discussed.

Gauge Theory of Composite Fermions: Particle-Flux Separation in Quantum Hall Systems

Fractionalization phenomenon of electrons in quantum Hall states is studied in terms of U(1) gauge theory. We focus on the Chern-Simons(CS) fermion description of the quantum Hall effect(QHE) at the filling factor $ν=p/(2pq\pm 1)$, and show that the successful composite-fermions(CF) theory of Jain acquires a solid theoretical basis, which we call particle-flux separation(PFS). PFS can be studied efficiently by a gauge theory and characterized as a deconfinement phenomenon in the corresponding gauge dynamics. The PFS takes place at low temperatures, $T \leq T_{\rm PFS}$, where each electron or CS fermion splinters off into two quasiparticles, a fermionic chargeon and a bosonic fluxon. The chargeon is nothing but Jain's CF, and the fluxon carries $2q$ units of CS fluxes. At sufficiently low temperatures $T \leq T_{\rm BC} (< T_{\rm PFS})$, fluxons Bose-condense uniformly and (partly) cancel the external magnetic field, producing the correlation holes. This partial cancellation validates the mean-field theory in Jain's CF approach. FQHE takes place at $T < T_{\rm BC}$ as a joint effect of (i) integer QHE of chargeons under the residual field $ΔB$ and (ii) Bose condensation of fluxons. We calculate the phase-transition temperature $T_{\rm PFS}$ and the CF mass. PFS is a counterpart of the charge-spin separation in the t-J model of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates in which each electron dissociates into holon and spinon. Quasiexcitations and resistivity in the PFS state are also studied. The resistivity is just the sum of contributions of chargeons and fluxons, and $ρ_{xx}$ changes its behavior at $T = T_{\rm PFS}$, reflecting the change of quasiparticles from chargeons and fluxons at $T < T_{\rm PFS}$ to electrons at $T_{\rm PFS} < T$.

Particle-Flux Separation and Quasiexcitations in Quantum Hall Systems

The quasiexcitations of quantum Hall systems at the filling factor $ν= p/(2pq \pm 1)$ are studied in terms of chargeon and fluxon introduced previously as constituents of an electron at $ν= 1/2$. At temperatures $T < T_{\rm PFS}(ν)$, the phenomenon so-called particle-flux separation takes place, and chargeons and fluxons are deconfined to behave as quasiparticles. Bose condensation of fluxons justify the (partial) cancellation of external magnetic field. Fluxons describe correlation holes, while chargeons describe composite fermions. They contribute to the resistivity $ρ_{xy} = h/(νe^2)$ additively.

Lattice Dirac fermions in a non-Abelian random gauge potential: Many flavors, chiral symmetry restoration and localization

In the previous paper we studied Dirac fermions in a non-Abelian random vector potential by using lattice supersymmetry. By the lattice regularization, the system of disordered Dirac fermions is defined without any ambiguities. We showed there that at strong-disorder limit correlation function of the fermion local density of states decays algebraically at the band center. In this paper, we shall reexamine the multi-flavor or multi-species case rather in detail and argue that the correlator at the band center decays {\em exponentially} for the case of a {\em large} number of flavors. This means that a delocalization-localization phase transition occurs as the number of flavors is increased. This discussion is supported by the recent numerical studies on multi-flavor QCD at the strong-coupling limit, which shows that the phase structure of QCD drastically changes depending on the number of flavors. The above behaviour of the correlator of the random Dirac fermions is closely related with how the chiral symmetry is realized in QCD.

Lattice QCD with the Overlap Fermions at Strong Gauge Coupling (II)

In the previous paper we developed a strong-coupling expansion for the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions and showed that Lüsher's "extended" chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in some parameter region of the overlap fermions. In this paper, we derive a low-energy effective action of hadrons and show that there exist quasi-Nambu-Goldstone bosons which are identified as the pions. The pion field is a {\em nonlocal} composite field of quark and anti-quark even at the strong-coupling limit because of the nonlocality of the overlap fermion formalism and Lüsher's chiral symmetry. The pions become massless in the limit of the vanishing bare-quark mass as it is desired. We furthermore examine symmetries of the overlap fermions with the hopping expansion and argue that there appear no other massless modes other than the pions.

Supersymmetry on a lattice and Dirac fermions in a random vector potential

We study two-dimensional Dirac fermions in a random non-Abelian vector potential by using lattice regularization. We consider U(N) random vector potential for large $N$. The ensemble average with respect to random vector potential is taken by using lattice supersymmetry which we introduced before in order to investigate phase structure of supersymmetric gauge theory. We show that a phase transition occurs at a certain critical disorder strength. The ground state and low-energy excitations are studied in detail in the strong-disorder phase. Correlation function of the fermion local density of states decays algebraically at the band center because of a quasi-long-range order of chiral symmetry and the chiral anomaly cancellation in the lattice regularization (the species doubling). In the present study, we use the lattice regularization and also the Haar measure of U(N) for the average over the random vector potential. Therefore topologically nontrivial configurations of the vector potential are all included in the average. Implication of the present results for the system of Dirac fermions in a random vector potential with noncompact Gaussian distribution is discussed.

Random-mass Dirac fermions in an imaginary vector potential: Delocalization transition and localization length

One dimensional system of Dirac fermions with a random-varying mass is studied by the transfer-matrix methods which we developed recently. We investigate the effects of nonlocal correlation of the spatial-varying Dirac mass on the delocalization transition. Especially we numerically calculate both the "typical" and "mean" localization lengths as a function of energy and the correlation length of the random mass. To this end we introduce an imaginary vector potential as suggested by Hatano and Nelson and solve the eigenvalue problem. Numerical calculations are in good agreement with the results of the analytical calculations.

Lattice QCD with the Overlap Fermions at Strong Gauge Coupling

We generalize overlap fermion by Narayanan and Neuberger by introducing a hopping parameter t. This lattice fermion has desirable properties as the original overlap fermion. We expand "Dirac" operator of this fermion in powers of t. Higher-order terms of t are long-distance terms and this t-expansion is a kind of the hopping expansion. It is shown that the Ginsparg-Wilson relation is satisfied at each order of t. We show that this t-expansion is useful for study of the strong-coupling gauge theory. We apply this formalism to the lattice QCD and study its chiral phase structure at strong coupling. We find that there are (at least) two phases one of which has desired chiral properties of QCD. Possible phase structure of the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions is proposed.

Pions in Lattice QCD with the Overlap Fermions at Strong Gauge Coupling

In the previous paper we developed a strong-coupling expansion for the lattice QCD with the overlap fermions and showed that Lüsher's "extended" chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in some parameter region of the overlap fermions. In this paper, we obtain a low-energy effective action and show that there exist quasi-Nambu-Goldsone bosons which are identified as the pions.

Gauged Gross--Neveu model with overlap fermions

We investigate chiral properties of the overlap lattice fermion by using solvable model in two dimensions, the gauged Gross-Neveu model. In this model, the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of small but finite fermion mass. We calculate the quasi-Nambu-Goldstone(NG) boson mass as a function of the bare fermion mass and two parameters in the overlap formula. We find that the quasi-NG boson mass has desired properties as a result of the extended chiral symmetry found by Lüscher. We also show the PCAC relation is satisfied in desired form. Comparison between the overlap and Wilson lattice fermions is also made.

Spin-gap effect on resistivity in the t-J model

We calculate the spin-gap effect on dc resistivity in the t-J model of high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprates by using the Ginzburg-Landau theory coupled with a gauge field as its effective field theory to get $ρ(T) \propto T \{1-c\:(T^* -T)^d \}$, where $T^*$ is the spin-gap onset temperature. By taking the compactness of massive gauge field into account, the exponent $d$ deviates from its mean-field value 1/2 and becomes a nonuniversal $T$-dependent quantity, which improves the correspondence with the experiments.

Nonlocally-correlated disorder and delocalization in one dimension II: Localization length

In the previous paper (cond-mat/9809323), we calculated the density of staes in the random-mass Dirac fermion system. In this paper, we obtain the mean localization length of the single-fermion Greem's function by using the supersymmetric methods. It is shown that the localization length is a increasing function of the correation length of the disorders. This result is in agreement with the density of states and the numerical studies (cond-mat/9903389).
