Localized and Extended States in One-Dimensional Disordered System: Random-Mass Dirac Fermions

System of Dirac fermions with random-varying mass is studied in detail. We reformulate the system by transfer-matrix formalism. Eigenvalues and wave functions are obtained numerically for various configurations of random telegraphic mass m(x). Localized and extended states are identified. For quasi-periodic m(x), low-energy wave functions are also quasi-periodic and extended, though we are not imposing the periodic boundary condition on wave function. On increasing the randomness of the varying mass, states lose periodicity and most of them tend to localize. At the band center or the low-energy limit, there exist extended states which have more than one peak spatially separate with each other comparatively large distance. Numerical calculations of the density of states and ensemble averaged Green's functions are explicitly given. They are in good agreement with analytical calculations by using the supersymmetric methods and exact form of the zero-energy wave functions.

Nonlocally-Correlated Disorder and Delocalization in One Dimension: Density of States

We study delocalization transition in a one-dimensional electron system with quenched disorder by using supersymmetric (SUSY) methods. Especially we focus on effects of nonlocal correlation of disorder, for most of studies given so far considered $δ$-function type white noise disorder. We obtain wave function of the "lowest-energy" state which dominates partition function in the limit of large system size. Density of states is calculated in the scaling region. The result shows that delocalization transition is stable against nonlocal short-ranged correlation of disorder. Especially states near the band center are enhanced by the correlation of disorder which partially suppresses random fluctuation of disorder. Physical picture of the localization and the delocalization transition is discussed.

Low-energy excitations in 2-leg and 3-leg quantum spin ladders

Low-energy excitations in spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladders are studied by bosonization and gauge theoretical description. It is explicitly shown that zero modes in the bosonization play an essentially important role. Low-energy excitations in the 2-leg system is described by spin triplet Majorana fermions, and in the 3-leg case spin excitations on the top and bottom ladders are described by two massless scalar fields. It is predicted that if inter-ladder interaction between the top and bottom chains is introduced, a phase transition occures at some critical coupling and the system acquires an energy gap.

Solitons in Chern-Simons theories of nonrelativistic CP^{N-1} models: Spin textures in the quantum Hall effect

Topological solitons in CP^{N-1} models coupled with Chern-Simons gauge theory and a Hopf term are studied both analytically and numerically. These models are low-energy effective theories for the quantum Hall effect with internal degrees of freedom, like that in bilayer electron systems. We explicitly show that the CP^{N-1} models describe quite well spin textures in the original Chern-Simons theory of bosonized electrons.

Instability of the Non-Fermi-Liquid Fixed Point in the Dissipative Gauge Theory of Fermions (I)Impurity Effects

We study a dissipative gauge theory of nonrelativistic fermions in 2+1 dimensions at zero temperature by the Wilsonian renormalization-group method. In this theory, we incorporate in the fermion propagator a new term of the form $ i κ\cdot\sign(ω)$ (where $κ$ is a parameter and $ω$ is the fermion frequency), which is usually induced by impurity effects. In the previous papers, we studied this system for $κ= 0$, and showed that there exists a non-Fermi-liquid infrared fixed point. In this paper, we address the question whether this non-Fermi-liquid behavior remains stable or not in the presence of impurity effects, i.e., the $κ$ term. Our results show that the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point is unstable for $κ\neq 0$ and an effective gauge coupling constant tends to vanish at low energies. However, in intermediate energy scales, the behavior of correlation functions for $κ\neq 0$ is controlled by the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point at $κ=0$, i.e., a crossover phenomenon appears. Physical implications of this phenomenon are discussed.

Entropies of Scalar Fields on Three Dimensional Black Holes

Thermodynamics of scalar fields is investigated in three dimensional black hole backgrounds in two approaches. One is mode expansion and direct computation of the partition sum, and the other is the Euclidean path integral approach. We obtain a number of exact results, for example, mode functions, Hartle-Hawking Green functions on the black holes, Green functions on a cone geometry, free energies and entropies. They constitute reliable bases for the thermodynamics of scalar fields. It is shown that thermodynamic quantities largely depend upon the approach to calculate them, boundary conditions for the scalar fields and regularization method. We find that, in general, the entropies are not proportional to the area of the horizon and that their divergent parts are not necessarily due to the existence of the horizon.
