Sharp geometric condition for null-controllability of the heat equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and consistent estimates on the control cost

In this note we study the control problem for the heat equation on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 1$, with control set $ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition (called $(γ, a)$-\emph{thickness}) on $ω$ such that the heat equation is null-controllable in any positive time. We give an estimate of the control cost with explicit dependency on the characteristic geometric parameters of the control set. Finally, we derive a control cost estimate for the heat equation on cubes with periodic, Dirichlet, or Neumann boundary conditions, where the control sets are again assumed to be thick. We show that the control cost estimate is consistent with the $\mathbb{R}^d$ case.

Scale-free quantitative unique continuation and equidistribution estimates for solutions of elliptic differential equations

We consider elliptic differential operators on either the entire Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ or on subsets consisting of a cube $Λ_L$ of integer length $L$. For eigenfunctions of the operator, and more general solutions of elliptic differential quations, we derive several quantitative unique continuation results. The first result is of local nature and estimates the vanishing order of a solution. The second is a sampling result and compares the $L^2$-norm of a solution over a union of equidistributed $δ$-balls in space with the $L^2$-norm on the entire space. In the case where the space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is replaced by a finite cube $Λ_L$ we derive similar estimates. A particular feature of our bound is that they are uniform as long as the coefficients of the operator are chosen from an appropriate ensemble, they are quantitative and explicit with respect to the radius $δ$, they are $L$-independent and stable under small shifts of the $δ$-balls. Our proof applies to second order terms which have slowly varying coefficients on the relevant length scale. The results can be also interpreted as special cases of uncertainty relations, observability estimates, or spectral inequalities.

Lifshitz tails for Schrödinger operators with random breather potential

We prove a Lifshitz tail bound on the integrated density of states of random breather Schrödinger operators. The potential is composed of translated single site potentials. The single site potential is an indicator function of set $tA$ where $t$ is from the unit interval and $A$ is a measurable set contained in the unit cell. The challenges of this model are: Since $A$ is not assumed to be star-shaped the dependence of the potential on the parameter $t$ is not monotone. It is also non-linear and not differentiable.

Glivenko-Cantelli Theory, Ornstein-Weiss quasi-tilings, and uniform Ergodic Theorems for distribution-valued fields over amenable groups

We consider random fields indexed by finite subsets of an amenable discrete group, taking values in the Banach-space of bounded right-continuous functions. The field is assumed to be equivariant, local, coordinate-wise monotone, and almost additive, with finite range dependence. Using the theory of quasi-tilings we prove an uniform ergodic theorem, more precisely, that averages along a Foelner sequence converge uniformly to a limiting function. Moreover we give explicit error estimates for the approximation in the sup norm.

Unique continuation principles and their absence for Schrödinger eigenfunctions on combinatorial and quantum graphs and in continuum space

For the analysis of the Schrödinger and related equations it is of central importance whether a unique continuation principle (UCP) holds or not. In continuum Euclidean space quantitative forms of unique continuation imply Wegner estimates and regularity properties of the integrated density of states (IDS) of Schrödinger operators with random potentials. For discrete Schrödinger equations on the lattice only a weak analog of the UCP holds, but it is sufficient to guarantee the continuity of the IDS. For other combinatorial graphs this is no longer true. Similarly, for quantum graphs the UCP does not hold in general and consequently, the IDS does not need to be continuous.

Scale-free unique continuation principle, eigenvalue lifting and Wegner estimates for random Schrödinger operators

We prove a scale-free, quantitative unique continuation principle for functions in the range of the spectral projector $χ_{(-\infty,E]}(H_L)$ of a Schrödinger operator $H_L$ on a cube of side $L\in \mathbb{N}$, with bounded potential. Such estimates are also called, depending on the context, uncertainty principles, observability estimates, or spectral inequalities. We apply it to (i) prove a Wegner estimate for random Schrödinger operators with non-linear parameter-dependence and to (ii) exhibit the dependence of the control cost on geometric model parameters for the heat equation in a multi-scale domain.

Wegner estimate for Landau-breather Hamiltonians

We consider Landau Hamiltonians with a weak coupling random electric potential of breather type. Under appropriate assumptions we prove a Wegner estimate. It implies the Hoelder continuity of the integrated density of states. The main challenge is the problem how to deal with non-linear dependence on the random parameters.

A Glivenko-Cantelli Theorem for almost additive functions

We develop a Glivenko--Cantelli theory for monotone, almost additive functions of i.\,i.\,d.\ sequences of random variables indexed by~$\Z^d$. Under certain conditions on the random sequence, short range correlations are allowed as well. We have an explicit error estimate, consisting of a probabilistic and a geometric part. We apply the results to yield uniform convergence for several quantities arising naturally in statistical physics.

Harmonic Analysis and Random Schrödinger Operators

This survey is based on a series of lectures given during the \emph{School on Random Schrödinger Operators} and the \emph{International Conference on Spectral Theory and Mathematical Physics} at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, held in Santiago in November 2014. As the title suggests, the presented material has two foci: Harmonic analysis, more precisely, unique continuation properties of several natural function classes and Schrödinger operators, more precisely properties of their eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and solutions of associated differential equations. It mixes topics from (rather) pure to (rather) applied mathematics, as well as classical questions and results dating back a whole century to very recent and even unpublished ones. The selection of material covered is based on the selection made for the minicourse, and is certainly a personal choice corresponding to the research interests of the authors.

Conditional Wegner estimate for the standard random breather potential

We prove a conditional Wegner estimate for Schrödinger operators with random potentials of breather type. More precisely, we reduce the proof of the Wegner estimate to a scale free unique continuation principle. The relevance of such unique continuation principles has been emphasized in previous papers, in particular in recent years. We consider the standard breather model, meaning that the single site potential is the characteristic function of a ball or a cube. While our methods work for a substantially larger class of random breather potentials, we discuss in this particular paper only the standard model in order to make the arguments and ideas easily accessible.

A unified approach to convergence rates for $\ell^1$-regularization and lacking sparsity

In $\ell^1$-regularization, which is an important tool in signal and image processing, one usually is concerned with signals and images having a sparse representation in some suitable basis, e.g. in a wavelet basis. Many results on convergence and convergence rates of sparse approximate solutions to linear ill-posed problems are known, but rate results for the $\ell^1$-regularization in case of lacking sparsity had not been published until 2013. In the last two years, however, two articles appeared providing sufficient conditions for convergence rates in case of non-sparse but almost sparse solutions. In the present paper, we suggest a third sufficient condition, which unifies the existing two and, by the way, also incorporates the well-known restricted isometry property.

Wegner estimate and localization for alloy-type models with sign-changing exponentially decaying single-site potentials

We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ and $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ with a random potential of alloy-type. The single-site potential is assumed to be exponentially decaying but not necessarily of fixed sign. In the continuum setting we require a generalized step-function shape. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. In the described situation a Wegner estimate which is polynomial in the volume of the box and linear in the size of the energy interval holds. We apply the established Wegner estimate as an ingredient for a localization proof via multiscale analysis.

On $\ell^1$-regularization in light of Nashed's ill-posedness concept

Based on the powerful tool of variational inequalities, in recent papers convergence rates results on $\ell^1$-regularization for ill-posed inverse problems have been formulated in infinite dimensional spaces under the condition that the sparsity assumption slightly fails, but the solution is still in $\ell^1$. In the present paper we improve those convergence rates results and apply them to the Cesáro operator equation in $\ell^2$ and to specific denoising problems. Moreover, we formulate in this context relationships between Nashed's types of ill-posedness and mapping properties like compactness and strict singularity.

Quantum Hamiltonians with weak random abstract perturbation. I. Initial length scale estimate

We study random Hamiltonians on finite-size cubes and waveguide segments of increasing diameter. The number of random parameters determining the operator is proportional to the volume of the cube. In the asymptotic regime where the cube size, and consequently the number of parameters as well, tends to infinity, we derive deterministic and probabilistic variational bounds on the lowest eigenvalue, i.e. the spectral minimum, as well as exponential off-diagonal decay of the Green function at energies above, but close to the overall spectral bottom.

Spectral gap estimates for some block matrices

We estimate the size of the spectral gap at zero for some Hermitian block matrices. Included are quasi-definite matrices, quasi-semidefinite matrices (the closure of the set of the quasi-definite matrices) and some related block matrices which need not belong to either of these classes. Matrices of such structure arise in quantum models of possibly disordered systems with supersymmetry or graphene like symmetry. Some of the results immediately extend to infinite dimension.
