STOKES tables and KY codes

The family of KY codes is an XSPEC-compatible package of fully relativistic models for spectro-polarimetric modeling of X-ray binary systems and active galactic nuclei. Within Kerr space-time, they compute accretion disc line profiles, reflection spectra from discs illuminated by Comptonized coronal radiation, and thermal disc emission including disc-corona interaction and disc self-irradiation. Many of these models include polarimetric computations, and more advanced timing variants compute X-ray, UV and optical reverberation. The primary source of Comptonized X-rays is assumed to be in the lamp-post on-axis or slab above the disc geometry. The KY codes operate at various levels of complexity; some models use analytical approximations for local re-processing, while others rely on detailed numerical tables. For the most accurate treatment of rest-frame re-processing in partially ionized accretion disc atmospheres, the KY codes employ pre-computed spectro-polarimetric tables generated with the STOKES code. These transmission and reflection tables are also designed for standalone use in XSPEC and as inputs to higher-level models beyond KY. The chapter first introduces the STOKES tables in various variants and shows their non-relativistic usage in XSPEC models for (i) an extended source illuminating a distant geometrically thin disc, and (ii) a compact source illuminating a vertically extended equatorial obscurer (e.g., a torus or thick wind). The relativistic KY ray-tracing is then described, followed by an introduction to each KY model. Examples of fits to the IXPE data of X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei using these models are shown. Together, these models form a comprehensive and publicly available framework for spectro-polarimetric modeling and data fitting of accretion. We provide links to their online repositories.

The First X-Ray Polarimetry of an Eclipsing Low-Mass X-Ray Binary: Serendipitous IXPE Observation of AX J1745.6-2901

We present the first X-ray polarimetric measurement of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary system AX J1745.6-2901 conducted by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) satellite. This transient source, located within $ \sim $1.5' of the Galactic center, was observed serendipitously during a MAXI J1744-294 observation with a duration of 150 ks. The complex nature of the region in which AX J1745.6-2901 is located poses a challenge for studying its polarization. By performing a detailed analysis of the contamination from MAXI J1744-294 and the Galactic center diffuse emission, we find the source polarization degree PD = 14.7$\% \pm$ 4.0$\%$ and polarization angle PA = 122$^\circ \pm 8^\circ$. The phase-resolved analysis shows increase in polarization during the eclipse phase, with PD = 34.2$\% \pm$ 8.7$\%$, suggesting that the polarization-inducing mechanisms are of scattering nature, probably originating from disk winds.

Super-Eddington Accretion Geometry: a Remarkable Stability of the Hidden Ultraluminous X-Ray Source Cygnus X-3

We report on the average and orbital phase-resolved polarization of Cyg X-3 in the hard state during the 2023 Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observational campaign. We find the polarization degree of $ 21.2 \pm 0.4 \% $ and polarization angle of $ 92.2 \pm 0.5^\circ $, well compatible with the first hard-state IXPE observation in 2022. As the observed polarization depends on both the accretion geometry and the X-ray emission mechanism, which we attribute to reflection from the optically thick envelope surrounding the central source, our result indicates that both are very stable on year-long timescale. We discuss time- and energy-dependent polarization properties and their implications for the geometry and stability of the accretion funnel.

Exploring MAXI J1744-294: IXPE insights into a Newly Discovered X-ray Transient

We present the first IXPE spectro-polarimetric observation of the black hole candidate MAXI J1744$-$294, a transient X-ray source discovered during a bright 2025 outburst in the Galactic center region. During the $\sim$150 ks observation, the source was found in the soft state, and its spectrum was well described by an absorbed multicolor disk with a minor high-energy tail. No significant polarization was detected, and we derived a 3$σ$ upper limit on the polarization degree of $1.3\%$ in the 2--8 keV energy band. This result is consistent with previous findings for soft-state black hole binaries observed at low to intermediate inclination angles. By comparing the polarization degree upper limit with theoretical predictions for standard accretion disk emission, we constrain the disk inclination to $i \lesssim 38^\circ$--$71^\circ$, depending on the black hole spin and the disk atmosphere albedo.

First X-ray polarimetric view of a Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nucleus: the case of NGC 2110

Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGN) provides a unique view of Comptonization and non-thermal emission from accreting black holes in the low-accretion rate regime. However, to decipher the exact nature of the Comptonizing corona in LLAGN, its geometry and emission mechanism must be understood beyond the limits of spectro-timing techniques. Spectro-polarimetry offers the potential to break the degeneracies between different coronal emission models. Compton-thin LLAGN provide an opportunity for such spectro-polarimetric exploration in the 2-8 keV energy range using IXPE. In this work, we carry out a spectro-polarimetric analysis of the first IXPE observation, in synergy with a contemporaneous NuSTAR observation, of an LLAGN: NGC 2110. Using 554.4 ks of IXPE data from October 2024, we constrain the 99% upper limit on the Polarization Degree (PD) to be less than 8.3% assuming the corresponding Polarization Angle (PA) to be aligned with the radio jet, and less than 3.6% if in the perpendicular direction. In the absence of a significant PD detection, the PA remains formally unconstrained, yet the polarization significance contours appear to be aligned with the radio jet, tentatively supporting models in which the corona is radially extended in the plane of the disk. We also carry out detailed Monte Carlo simulations using MONK and STOKES codes to test different coronal models against our results and compare the polarization properties between NGC 2110 and brighter Seyferts.

Polarisation properties of X-ray emission from accreting supermassive black holes

This dissertation elaborates on X-ray polarisation features of astrophysical environments near accreting black holes. Although the work was originally assigned to supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei, the results are also largely applicable to stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binary systems. Several numerical models predicting the X-ray polarisation from these sources are presented, including their immediate applications in the interpretation of the latest discoveries achieved thanks to the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) mission that began operating in December 2021. The modeling ranges from radiative transfer effects in atmospheres of accretion discs to general-relativistic signatures of X-rays travelling in vacuum near the central black holes to reprocessing events in distant, circumnuclear components. Various scales in physical and computational complexity are examined. A unifying element of this dissertation is the focus on reflection of X-rays from partially ionized matter.

Cygnus X-3 revealed as a Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source by IXPE

The accretion of matter by compact objects can be inhibited by radiation pressure if the luminosity exceeds the critical value, known as the Eddington limit. Discovery of ultraluminous X-ray sources has shown that accretion can proceed even when the apparent luminosity significantly exceeds this limit. High apparent luminosity might be produced thanks to geometric beaming of the radiation by an outflow. The outflow half-opening angle, which determines the amplification due to beaming, has never been robustly constrained. Using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, we made the measurement of X-ray polarization in the Galactic X-ray binary Cyg X-3. We find high, over 20%, nearly energy-independent linear polarization, orthogonal to the direction of the radio ejections. These properties unambiguously indicate the presence of a collimating outflow in the X-ray binary Cyg~X-3 and constrain its half-opening angle, <15 degrees. Thus, the source can be used as a laboratory for studying the super-critical accretion regime. This finding underscores the importance of X-ray polarimetry in advancing our understanding of accreting sources.

Dramatic Drop in the X-Ray Polarization of Swift J1727.8$-$1613 in the Soft Spectral State

Black-hole X-ray binaries exhibit different spectral and timing properties in different accretion states. The X-ray outburst of a recently discovered and extraordinarily bright source, Swift$~$J1727.8$-$1613, has enabled the first investigation of how the X-ray polarization properties of a source evolve with spectral state. The 2$-$8 keV polarization degree was previously measured by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to be $\approx$ 4% in the hard and hard intermediate states. Here we present new IXPE results taken in the soft state, with the X-ray flux dominated by the thermal accretion-disk emission. We find that the polarization degree has dropped dramatically to $\lesssim$ 1%. This result indicates that the measured X-ray polarization is largely sensitive to the accretion state and the polarization fraction is significantly higher in the hard state when the X-ray emission is dominated by up-scattered radiation in the X-ray corona. The combined polarization measurements in the soft and hard states disfavor a very high or low inclination of the system.

X-ray Polarization of the Black Hole X-ray Binary 4U 1630-47 Challenges Standard Thin Accretion Disk Scenario

Large energy-dependent X-ray polarization degree is detected by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer ({IXPE}) in the high-soft emission state of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630--47. The highly significant detection (at $\approx50σ$ confidence level) of an unexpectedly high polarization, rising from $\sim6\%$ at $2$ keV to $\sim10\%$ at $8$ keV, cannot be easily reconciled with standard models of thin accretion discs. In this work we compare the predictions of different theoretical models with the {IXPE} data and conclude that the observed polarization properties are compatible with a scenario in which matter accretes onto the black hole through a thin disc, covered by a partially-ionized atmosphere flowing away at mildly relativistic velocities.

X-ray polarization properties of partially ionized equatorial obscurers around accreting compact objects

We present the expected X-ray polarization signal resulting from distant reprocessing material around black holes. Using a central isotropic power-law emission at the center of the simulated model, we add distant equatorial and axially symmetric media that are covering the central accreting sources. We include partial ionization and partial transparency effects, and the impact of various polarization and steepness of the primary radiation spectrum. The results are obtained with the Monte Carlo code STOKES that considers both line and continuum processes and computes the effects of scattering and absorption inside static homogenous wedge-shaped and elliptical toroidal structures, varying in relative size, composition and distance to the source. We provide first order estimates for parsec-scale reprocessing in Compton-thin and Compton-thick active galactic nuclei, as well as winds around accreting stellar-mass compact objects, for observer's inclinations above and below the grazing angle. The resulting reprocessed polarization can reach tens of % with either parallel or perpendicular orientation with respect to the axis of symmetry, depending on subtle details of the geometry, density and ionization structure. We also show how principal parameters constrained from X-ray spectroscopy or polarimetry in other wavelengths can lift the shown degeneracies in X-ray polarization. We provide an application example of the broad modelling discussion by revisiting the recent IXPE 2-8 keV X-ray polarimetric observation of the accreting stellar-mass black hole in Cygnus X-3 from the perspective of partial transparency and ionization of the obscuring outflows.

Spectral and polarization properties of reflected X-ray emission from black-hole accretion discs for a distant observer: the lamp-post model

Rebirth of X-ray polarimetric instruments will have a significant impact on our knowledge of compact accreting sources. The properties of inner-accreting regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or X-ray binary systems (XRBs), such as black-hole spin, their disc inclination and orientation, shape and size of their corona, can be polarimetrically studied, parallelly to the well-known X-ray spectroscopic and timing techniques. In this work, we provide a new spectropolarimetric numerical estimate of X-rays in the lamp-post coronal model for a distant observer, including a polarized reflected radiation from the accretion disc. The local disc reflection was simulated using the codes TITAN and STOKES and includes variable disc ionization as well as Monte Carlo treatment of Compton multiple scatterings. We introduce a relativistic code KYNSTOKES based on our well-tested KY package that accounts for all relativistic effects on radiation near a black hole, apart from the returning radiation, and adds a possibility of polarized coronal emission. We study the spectrum, polarization degree and polarization angle at spatial infinity for various global system parameters and we demonstrate the difference at infinity, if analytical local reflection computations are used. We newly predict that in the hard X-rays the reflected component can be 25% polarized and the total emission can be 9% polarized in the most favourable, yet realistic configurations of radio-quiet AGNs. Thus, the relativistic disc reflection remains important for the interpretation of X-ray polarimetric observations.

First X-ray polarization measurement confirms the low black-hole spin in LMC X-3

X-ray polarization is a powerful tool to investigate the geometry of accreting material around black holes, allowing independent measurements of the black hole spin and orientation of the innermost parts of the accretion disk. We perform the X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of an X-ray binary system in the Large Magellanic Cloud, LMC X-3, that hosts a stellar-mass black hole, known to be persistently accreting since its discovery. We report the first detection of the X-ray polarization in LMC X-3 with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, and find the average polarization degree of 3.2% +- 0.6% and a constant polarization angle -42 deg +- 6 deg over the 2-8 keV range. Using accompanying spectroscopic observations by NICER, NuSTAR, and the Neil Gehrels Swift observatories, we confirm previous measurements of the black hole spin via the X-ray continuum method, a ~ 0.2. From polarization analysis only, we found consistent results with low black-hole spin, with an upper limit of a < 0.7 at a 90% confidence level. A slight increase of the polarization degree with energy, similar to other black-hole X-ray binaries in the soft state, is suggested from the data but with a low statistical significance.

The First X-ray Polarization Observation of the Black Hole X-ray Binary 4U 1630-47 in the Steep Power Law State

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 in the steep power law (or very high) state. The observations reveal a linear polarization degree of the 2-8 keV X-rays of 6.8 +/- 0.2 % at a position angle of 21°.3 +/- 0°.9 East of North (all errors at 1σ confidence level). Whereas the polarization degree increases with energy, the polarization angle stays constant within the accuracy of our measurements. We compare the polarization of the source in the steep power-law state with the previous IXPE measurement of the source in the high soft state. We find that even though the source flux and spectral shape are significantly different between the high soft state and the steep power-law state, their polarization signatures are similar. Assuming that the polarization of both the thermal and power-law emission components are constant over time, we estimate the power-law component polarization to be 6.8-7.0% and note that the polarization angle of the thermal and power-law components must be approximately aligned. We discuss the implications for the origin of the power-law component and the properties of the emitting plasma.

Spectral and polarization properties of reflected X-ray emission from black hole accretion discs

X-ray polarimetric missions planned for this decade will significantly enhance our knowledge of compact accreting sources. Observations of the X-ray polarization signal from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or X-ray binary systems (XRBs) will bring new means to study inner accretion flow in these objects that, together with currently used spectroscopic and timing techniques, will help us to determine better their properties, such as their inclination, orientation, shape, and size of their corona as well as the black hole spin. In this work, we present a yet missing piece in the global polarization models of black hole accretion discs. We compute the reflected X-ray emission from the disc in a local co-moving frame using (1) the radiative transfer code TITAN to obtain the ionization structure of the disc and (2) the Monte Carlo code STOKES that incorporates the physics of absorption, re-emission, and Compton scattering to produce a complete spectropolarimetric output. We present the final Stokes parameters I, Q, and U for a set of photon-indices of the incident primary power-law radiation, the disc ionization parameters, incident and emission angles, for three independent polarization states of the incident coronal X-ray photons with a sufficient resolution in energy to allow for sharp discussion of spectral and polarization properties. We show that the spectral component matches well literature predictions. The polarization degree and angle are in agreement with analytical approximations previously appearing in reflection models and we demonstrate that the polarized reflected X-ray emission can be, locally, quite large in the 2-12 keV band.

Polarized x-rays constrain the disk-jet geometry in the black hole x-ray binary Cygnus X-1

A black hole x-ray binary (XRB) system forms when gas is stripped from a normal star and accretes onto a black hole, which heats the gas sufficiently to emit x-rays. We report a polarimetric observation of the XRB Cygnus X-1 using the Imaging x-ray Polarimetry Explorer. The electric field position angle aligns with the outflowing jet, indicating that the jet is launched from the inner x-ray emitting region. The polarization degree is (4.01+-0.20)% at 2 to 8 kiloelectronvolts, implying that the accretion disk is viewed closer to edge-on than the binary orbit. The observations reveal that hot x-ray emitting plasma is spatially extended in a plane perpendicular to the jet axis, not parallel to the jet.
