Projected GANs Converge Faster

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) produce high-quality images but are challenging to train. They need careful regularization, vast amounts of compute, and expensive hyper-parameter sweeps. We make significant headway on these issues by projecting generated and real samples into a fixed, pretrained feature space. Motivated by the finding that the discriminator cannot fully exploit features from deeper layers of the pretrained model, we propose a more effective strategy that mixes features across channels and resolutions. Our Projected GAN improves image quality, sample efficiency, and convergence speed. It is further compatible with resolutions of up to one Megapixel and advances the state-of-the-art Fréchet Inception Distance (FID) on twenty-two benchmark datasets. Importantly, Projected GANs match the previously lowest FIDs up to 40 times faster, cutting the wall-clock time from 5 days to less than 3 hours given the same computational resources.

Coherent False Seizure Prediction in Epilepsy, Coincidence or Providence?

Seizure forecasting using machine learning is possible, but the performance is far from ideal, as indicated by many false predictions and low specificity. Here, we examine false and missing alarms of two algorithms on long-term datasets to show that the limitations are less related to classifiers or features, but rather to intrinsic changes in the data. We evaluated two algorithms on three datasets by computing the correlation of false predictions and estimating the information transfer between both classification methods. For 9 out of 12 individuals both methods showed a performance better than chance. For all individuals we observed a positive correlation in predictions. For individuals with strong correlation in false predictions we were able to boost the performance of one method by excluding test samples based on the results of the second method. Substantially different algorithms exhibit a highly consistent performance and a strong coherency in false and missing alarms. Hence, changing the underlying hypothesis of a preictal state of fixed time length prior to each seizure to a proictal state is more helpful than further optimizing classifiers. The outcome is significant for the evaluation of seizure prediction algorithms on continuous data.

Involvement of structural dynamics in the charge-glass formation in molecular metals

We present a combined study of thermal expansion and resistance fluctuation spectroscopy measurements exploring the static and dynamic aspects of the charge-glass formation in the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ with $M$ = Cs and $M^\prime$ = Co,Zn. In these materials, the emergence of a novel charge-glass state so far has been interpreted in purely electronic terms by considering the strong frustration of the Coulomb interactions on a triangular lattice. Contrary to this view, we provide comprehensive evidence for the involvement of a \textit{structural} glass-like transition at $T_{\text{g}} \sim 90-100\,$K. This glassy transition can be assigned to the freezing of structural conformations of the ethylene endgroups in the donor molecule with an activation energy of $E_{\rm{a}}\approx 0.32\,$eV, and the concomitant slowing down of the charge carrier dynamics is well described by a model of non-exponential kinetics. These findings discolse an important aspect of the phase diagram and renders the current understanding of the charge-glass state in the whole family of $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2MM^\prime$(SCN)$_4$ incomplete. Our results suggest that the entanglement of slow structural and charge-cluster dynamics due to the intimate coupling of lattice and electronic degrees of freedom determine the charge-glass formation under geometric frustration.

Modeling pressure pulsation and backflow in progressing cavity pumps with deformable stator

This contribution studies the impact of the rotor-stator interaction in a single-stage progressing cavity pump on the flow rate and pressure. Specifically, we investigate the effect of the rotor movement on the sealings formed with deformable stators for various speeds and pressures. Sealings are reconstructed with the help of a geometric 3D model. We analyze the tangential and radial deviation of the rotor from its reference path and show that the radial deviation affects the flow rate, whereas the tangential deviation affects the pressure dynamics. The conjectures are confirmed with a laboratory test setup.

Learning Robust Models Using The Principle of Independent Causal Mechanisms

Standard supervised learning breaks down under data distribution shift. However, the principle of independent causal mechanisms (ICM, Peters et al. (2017)) can turn this weakness into an opportunity: one can take advantage of distribution shift between different environments during training in order to obtain more robust models. We propose a new gradient-based learning framework whose objective function is derived from the ICM principle. We show theoretically and experimentally that neural networks trained in this framework focus on relations remaining invariant across environments and ignore unstable ones. Moreover, we prove that the recovered stable relations correspond to the true causal mechanisms under certain conditions. In both regression and classification, the resulting models generalize well to unseen scenarios where traditionally trained models fail.

Lattice dynamics coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl reveal a phonon anomaly in a wide temperature range. Starting from $T_{\rm ins}\sim50$-$60$ K where the charge gap opens, the low-lying optical phonon modes become overdamped upon cooling towards the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N} = 27$ K, where also a ferroelectric ordering at $T_{\rm FE} \approx T_{\rm N}$ occurs. Conversely, the phonon damping becomes small again when spins and charges are ordered below $T_\mathrm{N}$, while no change of the lattice symmetry is observed across $T_\mathrm{N}$ in neutron diffraction measurements. We assign the phonon anomalies to structural fluctuations coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the BEDT-TTF molecules.

Estimating load points of a motor-pump system using pressure and inverter drive data

We propose a novel method for the estimation of rotor position, speed, and torque of a motor-pump system consisting of a progressive cavity pump (PCP) driven by an induction motor which operates under V/f open-loop control. We compute the speed and rotor position of the PCP by applying a phase locked loop to the pressure signal at the pressure side of the pump. An extended Kalman filter is used to estimate the torque of the PCP based on the speed, effective value of the stator current of the induction motor and a nonlinear motor model. Furthermore, we derive a tractable condition under which the convergence of the observer is guaranteed. We use a laboratory experiment to verify our results.

Evolution of the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of the triple perovskite Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$

We report a comprehensive investigation of the triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$. Stabilizing in the hexagonal $P6_{3}/mmc$ symmetry at room temperature, this system transforms to a monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry at the magnetic phase transition. On further reduction in temperature, the system partially distorts to an even lower symmetry ($P2/c$), with both these structurally disparate phases coexisting down to the lowest measured temperatures. The magnetic structure as determined from neutron diffraction data indicates a weakly canted antiferromagnetic structure, which is also supported by first-principles calculations. Theory indicates that the Ir$^{5+}$ carries a finite magnetic moment, which is also consistent with the neutron data. This suggests that the putative $J=0$ state is avoided. Measurements of heat capacity, electrical resistance noise and dielectric susceptibility all point towards the stabilization of a highly correlated ground state in the Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$ system.

Re: What's Up Johnny? -- Covert Content Attacks on Email End-to-End Encryption

We show practical attacks against OpenPGP and S/MIME encryption and digital signatures in the context of email. Instead of targeting the underlying cryptographic primitives, our attacks abuse legitimate features of the MIME standard and HTML, as supported by email clients, to deceive the user regarding the actual message content. We demonstrate how the attacker can unknowingly abuse the user as a decryption oracle by replying to an unsuspicious looking email. Using this technique, the plaintext of hundreds of encrypted emails can be leaked at once. Furthermore, we show how users could be tricked into signing arbitrary text by replying to emails containing CSS conditional rules. An evaluation shows that 17 out of 19 OpenPGP-capable email clients, as well as 21 out of 22 clients supporting S/MIME, are vulnerable to at least one attack. We provide different countermeasures and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

Insights from experiment and $ab\,initio$ calculations into the glass-like transition in the molecular conductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl

We present high-resolution measurements of the relative length change as a function of temperature of the organic charge-transfer salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Cl. We identify anomalous features at $T_g \approx\,63$ K which can be assigned to a kinetic glass-like ordering transition. By determining the activation energy $E_A$, this glass-like transition can be related to conformational degrees of freedom of the ethylene endgroups of the organic building block BEDT-TTF. As opposed to other $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$ salts, we identify a peculiar ethylene endgroup ordering in the present material in which only one of the two crystallographically inequivalent ethylene endgroups is subject to glass-like ordering. This experimental finding is fully consistent with our predictions from $ab\,initio$ calculations from which we estimate the energy differences $ΔE$ and the activation energies $E_A$ between different conformations. The present results indicate that the specific interaction between the ethylene endgroups and the nearby anion layers leads to different energetics of the inequivalent ethylene endgroups, as evidenced by different ratios $E_A/ΔE$. We infer that the ratio $E_A/ΔE$ is a suitable parameter to identify the tendency of ethylene endgroups towards glass-like freezing.

Investigation of a possible electronic phase separation in the magnetic semiconductors Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As and Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$P by means of fluctuation spectroscopy

We present systematic temperature-dependent resistance noise measurements on a series of ferromagnetic Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As epitaxial thin films covering a large parameter space in terms of the Mn content $x$ and other variations regarding sample fabrication. We infer that the electronic noise is dominated by switching processes related to impurities in the entire temperature range. While metallic compounds with $x>2$ % do not exhibit any significant change in the low-frequency resistance noise around the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$, we find indications for an electronic phase separation in films with $x<2$ % in the vicinity of $T_\mathrm{C}$, manifesting itself in a maximum in the noise power spectral density. These results are compared with noise measurements on an insulating Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$P reference sample, for which the evidence for an electronic phase separation is even stronger and a possible percolation of bound magnetic polarons is discussed. Another aspect addressed in this work is the effect of ion-irradiation induced disorder on the electronic properties of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As films and, in particular, whether any electronic inhomogeneities can be observed in this case. Finally, we put our findings into the context of the ongoing debate on the electronic structure and the development of spontaneous magnetization in these materials.

Direct-write of free-form 3D nanostructures with controlled magnetic frustration

Building nanotechnological analogues of naturally occurring magnetic structures has proven to be a powerful approach to studying topics like geometry-induced magnetic frustration and to provide model systems for statistical physics. Moreover, it practically allows to engineer novel physical properties by realizing artificial lattice geometries that are not accessible via natural crystallization or chemical synthesis. This has been accomplished with great success in the field of two-dimensional artificial spin ice systems with important branches reaching into the field of magnetic logic devices. Although first proposals have been made to advance into three dimensions (3D), established nanofabrication pathways based on electron beam lithography have not been adapted to obtain free-form 3D nanostructures. Here we demonstrate the direct-write fabrication of freestanding ferromagnetic 3D nano-architectures with full control over the degree of magnetic frustration. By employing micro-Hall sensing, we have determined the magnetic stray field generated by our free-form structures in an externally applied magnetic field and we have performed micromagnetic and macro-spin simulations to deduce the spatial magnetization profiles in the structures and analyze their switching behavior. Furthermore we show that the magnetic 3D elements can be combined with other 3D elements of different chemical composition and intrinsic material properties.

Evidence for eight node mixed-symmetry superconductivity in a correlated organic metal

We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy on in situ cleaved single crystals of $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br with the tunneling direction parallel to the layered structure.

Coupled magnetic and electric hysteresis in the multiferroic double perovskite Lu2MnCoO6

We investigate a magnetic hysteresis loop with a remanent moment that couples to electric polarization to create coupled hysteretic multiferroic behavior in Lu2MnCoO6. Measurements of elastic neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and micro-Hall magnetometry demonstrate an unusual mechanism for the magnetic hysteresis, namely the hysteretic evolution of a microscopic magnetic order, and not classic ferromagnetic domain effects. We show how the frustrated spin system evolves from antiferromagnetism with an incommensurate long-wavelength modulation and strong fluctuations towards a net magnetism. We also clarify the different temperature scales for the onset of ordering, dynamics, and hysteresis.

Local density of states in the superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br

Low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals the local density of states of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, that was cut in-situ in ultra-high vacuum perpendicular to the superconducting BEDT-TTF layers. The spectra confirm that superconductivity is confined to the conducting BEDT-TTF layers, while the Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br anion layers are insulating. The density of states comprises a twofold superconducting gap, which is attributed to the two separated bands crossing the Fermi surface.

Disorder-induced gap in the normal density of states of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br

The density of states of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy on \textit{in-situ} cleaved surfaces, reveals a logarithmic suppression near the Fermi edge persisting above the critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. A soft Hubbard gap as predicted by the Anderson-Hubbard model for systems with disorder exactly describes the experimentally observed suppression. The electronic disorder also explains the diminished coherence peaks of the quasiparticle density of states below $T_\mathrm{c}$.

Lattice strain accompanying the colossal magnetoresistance effect in EuB$_6$

The coupling of magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom to the crystal lattice in the ferromagnetic semimetal EuB$_6$, which exhibits a complex ferromagnetic order and a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect, %, very likely involving magnetic polarons, is studied by high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction experiments. EuB$_6$ may be viewed as a model system, where pure magnetism-tuned transport and the response of the crystal lattice can be studied in a comparatively simple environment,i.e., not influenced by strong crystal-electric field effects and Jahn-Teller distortions. We find a very large lattice response, quantified by (i) the magnetic Grüneisen parameter, (ii) the spontaneous strain when entering the ferromagnetic region and (iii) the magnetostriction in the paramagnetic temperature regime. Our analysis reveals that a significant part of the lattice effects originates in the magnetically-driven delocalization of charge carriers, consistent with the scenario of percolating magnetic polarons. A strong effect of the formation and dynamics of local magnetic clusters on the lattice parameters is suggested to be a general feature of CMR materials.

On the influence of nanometer-thin antiferromagnetic surface layer on ferromagnetic CrO$_2$

We present magnetic stray field measurements performed on a single micro-crystal of the half metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$, covered by a naturally grown 2\,-\,5\,nm surface layer of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Cr$_2$O$_3$. The temperature variation of the stray field of the micro-crystal measured by micro-Hall magnetometry shows an anomalous increase below $\sim$\,60\,K. We find clear evidence that this behavior is due to the influence of the AFM surface layer, which could not be isolated in the corresponding bulk magnetization data measured using SQUID magnetometry. The distribution of pinning potentials, analyzed from Barkhausen jumps, exhibits a similar temperature dependence. Overall, the results indicate that the surface layer plays a role in defining the potential landscape seen by the domain configuration in the ferromagnetic grain.
