Disease Mapping with Generative Models

Disease mapping focuses on learning about areal units presenting high relative risk. Disease mapping models for disease counts specify Poisson regressions in relative risks compared with the expected counts. These models typically incorporate spatial random effects to accomplish spatial smoothing. Fitting of these models customarily computes expected disease counts via internal standardization. This places the data on both sides of the model, i.e., the counts are on the left side but they are also used to obtain the expected counts on the right side. As a result, these internally standardized models are incoherent and not generative; probabilistically, they could not produce the observed data. Here, we argue for adopting the direct generative model for disease counts. We model disease incidence instead of relative risks, using a generalized logistic regression. We extract relative risks post model fitting. We also extend the generative model to dynamic settings. We compare the generative models with internally standardized models through simulated datasets and a well-examined lung cancer morbidity data in Ohio. Each model is a spatial smoother and they smooth the data similarly with regard to relative risks. However, the generative models tend to provide tighter credible intervals. Since the generative specification is no more difficult to fit, is coherent, and is at least as good inferentially, we suggest it should be the model of choice for spatial disease mapping.

Impact of Edge States on Device Performance of Phosphorene Heterojunction Tunneling Field Effect Transistors

Black phosphorus (BP) tunneling transistors (TFETs) using heterojunction (He) are investigated by atomistic quantum transport simulations. It is observed that edge states have a great impact on transport characteristics of BP He-TFETs, which result in the potential pinning effect and deteriorate the gate control. While, on-state current can be effectively enhanced by using hydrogen to saturate the edge dangling bonds in BP He-TFETs, in which edge states are quenched. By extending layered BP with a smaller band gap to the channel region and modulating the BP thickness, device performance of BP He-TFETs can be further optimized and fulfill the requirements of the international technology road-map for semiconductors (ITRS) 2013 for low power applications. In 15 nm 3L-1L and 4L-1L BP He-TFETs along armchair direction on-state current can reach above 10$^3$ $μ$A/$μ$m with the fixed off-state current of 10 $pA/μ$m. It is also found that ambipolar effect can be effectively suppressed in BP He-TFETs.

Reply to Comment on "Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs"

Recently, we presented a paper about the tip-induced superconducting phase on TaAs single crystal (arXiv:1607.00513). A conductance plateau with double conductance peaks at finite bias, sharp double dips and a zero bias conductance peak were observed in the point contact spectra (PCS). These three features in one PCS suggest the possibility of p-wave like superconductivity and Majorana zero modes in the surface. Soon after our paper posted on arXiv, Gayen el al. (arXiv:1607.01405) questioned the underlying mechanism of our observations based on their experimental measurements in conventional superconductors(Pb and Nb) and conclusively indicated that the superconductivity observed in our TaAs crystal is conventional. We disagree with their quick conclusion without any specific study on the TaAs materials. We will explain in the following that for the clean (Z=0) point contact (PC) in ballistic limit, the superconducting transition feature in temperature dependence of PC resistance is expected. And the critical current effect claimed by Gayen el al. cannot explain the observed PCS in our paper.

Tip induced unconventional superconductivity on Weyl semimetal TaAs

Weyl fermion is a massless Dirac fermion with definite chirality, which has been long pursued since 1929. Though it has not been observed as a fundamental particle in nature, Weyl fermion can be realized as low-energy excitation around Weyl point in Weyl semimetal, which possesses Weyl fermion cones in the bulk and nontrivial Fermi arc states on the surface. As a firstly discovered Weyl semimetal, TaAs crystal possesses 12 pairs of Weyl points in the momentum space, which are topologically protected against small perturbations. Here, we report for the first time the tip induced superconductivity on TaAs crystal by point contact spectroscopy. A conductance plateau and sharp double dips are observed in the point contact spectra, indicating p-wave like unconventional superconductivity. Furthermore, the zero bias conductance peak in low temperature regime is detected, suggesting potentially the existence of Majorana zero modes. The experimentally observed tunneling spectra can be interpreted with a novel mirror-symmetry protected topological superconductor induced in TaAs, which can exhibit zero bias and double finite bias peaks, and double conductance dips in the measurements. Our work can open a broad avenue in search for new topological superconducting phases from topological Weyl materials and trigger intensive investigations for pursuing Majorana fermions.

Superconductivity in topologically nontrivial material Au2Pb

The search for nontrivial superconductivity in novel quantum materials is currently a most attractive topic in condensed matter physics and material science. The experimental studies have progressed quickly over the past couple of years. In this article, we report systematic studies of superconductivity in Au2Pb single crystals. The bulk superconductivity (onset transition temperature, Tconset= 1.3 K) of Au2Pb is characterized by both transport and diamagnetic measurements, where the upper critical field Hc2 shows unusual quasi-linear temperature dependence. The superconducting gap is revealed by point contact measurement with gold tip. However, when using tungsten (W) tip, which is much harder, the superconducting gap probed is largely enhanced as demonstrated by the increases of both Tconset and upper critical field (Hc2). This can be interpreted as a result of increase in density of states under external anisotropic stress imposed by the tip, as revealed by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, novel phase winding of the pseudospin texture along k-space loops around the Fermi energy is uncovered from the calculations, indicating that the observed superconductivity in Au2Pb may have nontrivial topology.

Observation of Quantum Griffiths Singularity and Ferromagnetism at Superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) Interface

Diverse phenomena emerge at the interface between band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, showing an opportunity for potential applications as well as bringing fundamental research interests. Particularly, the two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface offers an appealing platform for quantum phase transition from a superconductor to a weakly localized metal. Here we report the superconductor-metal transition in superconducting two-dimensional electron gas formed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interface driven by a perpendicular magnetic field. Interestingly, when approaching the quantum critical point, the dynamic critical exponent is not a constant but a diverging value, which is a direct evidence of quantum Griffiths singularity raised from quenched disorder at ultralow temperatures. Furthermore, the hysteretic property of magnetoresistance was firstly observed at LaAlO3/SrTiO3(110) interfaces, which suggests potential coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Quantum Image Matching

Quantum image processing (QIP) means the quantum based methods to speed up image processing algorithms. Many quantum image processing schemes claim that their efficiency are theoretically higher than their corresponding classical schemes. However, most of them do not consider the problem of measurement. As we all know, measurement will lead to collapse. That is to say, executing the algorithm once, users can only measure the final state one time. Therefore, if users want to regain the results (the processed images), they must execute the algorithms many times and then measure the final state many times to get all the pixels' values. If the measurement process is taken into account, whether or not the algorithms are really efficient needs to be reconsidered. In this paper, we try to solve the problem of measurement and give a quantum image matching algorithm. Unlike most of the QIP algorithms, our scheme interests only one pixel (the target pixel) instead of the whole image. It modifies the probability of pixels based on Grover's algorithm to make the target pixel to be measured with higher probability, and the measurement step is executed only once. An example is given to explain the algorithm more vividly. Complexity analysis indicates that the quantum scheme's complexity is $O(2^{n})$ in contradistinction to the classical scheme's complexity $O(2^{2n+2m})$, where $m$ and $n$ are integers related to the size of images.

Phase separation in LuFeO3 films

The structural transition at about 1000 °C, from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic phase of LuFeO3, has been investigated in thin films of LuFeO3. Separation of the two structural phases of LuFeO3 occurs on a length scale of micrometer, as visualized in real space using X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (X-PEEM). The results are consistent with X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy obtained from LuFeO3 thin films undergoing the irreversible structural transition from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic phase of LuFeO3, at elevated temperatures. The sharp phase boundaries between the structural phases are observed to align with the crystal planes of the hexagonal LuFeO3 phase. The coexistence of different structural domains indicates that the irreversible structural transition, from the hexagonal to the orthorhombic phase in LuFeO3, is a first order transition, for epitaxial hexagonal LuFeO3 films grown on Al2O3.

On the Structural Origin of the Single-ion Magnetic Anisotropy in LuFeO3

Electronic structures for the conduction bands of both hexagonal and orthorhombic LuFeO3 thin films have been measured using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at oxygen K (O K) edge. Dramatic differences in both the spectra shape and the linear dichroism are observed. These differences in the spectra can be explained using the differences in crystal field splitting of the metal (Fe and Lu) electronic states and the differences in O 2p-Fe 3d and O 2p-Lu 5d hybridizations. While the oxidation states has not changed, the spectra are sensitive to the changes in the local environments of the Fe3+ and Lu3+ sites in the hexagonal and orthorhombic structures. Using the crystal-field splitting and the hybridizations that are extracted from the measured electronic structures and the structural distortion information, we derived the occupancies of the spin minority states in Fe3+, which are non-zero and uneven. The single ion anisotropy on Fe3+ sites is found to originate from these uneven occupancies of the spin minority states via spin-orbit coupling in LuFeO3.

First-principles modeling of zincblende AlN layer in Al-AlN-TiN multilayers

An unusual growth mechanism of metastable zincblende AlN thin film by diffusion of nitrogen atoms into Al lattice is established. Using first-principles density functional theory, we studied the possibility of thermodynamic stability of AlN as a zincblende phase due to epitaxial strains and interface effect, which fails to explain the formation of zincblende AlN. We then compared the formation energetics of rocksalt and zincblende AlN in fcc Al through direct diffusion of nitrogen atoms to Al octahedral and tetrahedral interstitials. The formation of zincblende AlN thin film is determined to be a kinetically driven process, not a thermodynamically driven process.

$L^p$-Wasserstein distance for stochastic differential equations driven by Lévy processes

Coupling by reflection mixed with synchronous coupling is constructed for a class of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by Lévy noises. As an application, we establish the exponential contractivity of the associated semigroups $(P_t)_{t\ge0}$ with respect to the standard $L^p$-Wasserstein distance for all $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, consider the following SDE: \[\mathrm{d}X_t=\mathrm{d}Z_t+b(X_t)\,\mathrm{d}t,\] where $(Z_t)_{t\ge0}$ is a symmetric $α$-stable process on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with $α\in(1,2)$. We show that if the drift term $b$ satisfies that for any $x,y\in\mathbb{R}^d$, \[\bigl\langle b(x)-b(y),x-y\bigr\rangle\le\cases{K_1|x-y|^2,\qquad |x-y|\le L_0;\cr -K_2|x-y|^θ,\qquad |x-y|>L_0}\] holds with some positive constants $K_1$, $K_2$, $L_0>0$ and $θ\ge2$, then there is a constant $λ:=λ(θ,K_1,K_2,L_0)>0$ such that for all $p\in[1,\infty)$, $t>0$ and $x,y\in\mathbb{R}^d$, \[W_p(δ_xP_t,δ_yP_t)\le C(p,θ,K_1,K_2,L_0)\mathrm{e}^{-λt/p}\biggl[\frac{|x-y|^{1/p}\vee|x-y|}{1+|x-y|{\mathbf{1}}_{(1,\infty )\times (2,\infty)}(t,θ)}\biggr].\]

Interference Evidence for Rashba-Type Spin-Split on Semimetallic WTe2 Surface

Semimetallic tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) displays an extremely large non-saturating magnetoresistance (XMR), which is the subject of intense interest. This phenomenon is thought to arise from the combination of perfect n-p charge compensation with low carrier densities in WTe2 and presumably details of its band structure. Recently, "spin texture" induced by strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) has been observed in WTe2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). This provides a mechanism for protecting backscattering for the states involved and thus was proposed to play an important role in the XMR of WTe2. Here, based on our density functional calculations for bulk WTe2, we found a strong Rashba spin-orbit effect in the calculated band structure due to its non-centrosymmetric structure. This splits bands and two-fold spin degeneracy of bands is lifted. A prominent Umklapp interference pattern (a spectroscopic feature with involving reciprocal lattice vectors) can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) measurements on WTe2 surface at 4.2 K. This differs distinctly from the surface atomic structure demonstrated at 77 K. The energy dependence of Umklapp interference shows a strong correspondence with densities of states integrated from ARPES measurement, manifesting a fact that the bands are spin-split on the opposites side of Gamma point. Spectroscopic survey reveals the ratio of electron/hole asymmetry changes alternately with lateral locations along b axis, providing a microscopic picture for double-carrier transport of semimetallic WTe2. The calculated band structure and Fermi surface is further supported by our ARPES results and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations measurements.

Exact Recovery of Sparse Signals via Orthogonal Matching Pursuit: How Many Iterations Do We Need?

Orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) is a greedy algorithm widely used for the recovery of sparse signals from compressed measurements. In this paper, we analyze the number of iterations required for the OMP algorithm to perform exact recovery of sparse signals. Our analysis shows that OMP can accurately recover all $K$-sparse signals within $\lceil 2.8 K \rceil$ iterations when the measurement matrix satisfies a restricted isometry property (RIP). Our result improves upon the recent result of Zhang and also bridges the gap between Zhang's result and the fundamental limit of OMP at which exact recovery of $K$-sparse signals cannot be uniformly guaranteed.

Exponential Convergence in $L^p$-Wasserstein Distance for Diffusion Processes without Uniformly Dissipative Drift

By adopting the coupling by reflection and choosing an auxiliary function which is convex near infinity, we establish the exponential convergence of diffusion semigroups $(P_t)_{t\ge0}$ with respect to the standard $L^p$-Wasserstein distance for all $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we show that for the Itô stochastic differential equation $$\d X_t=\d B_t+b(X_t)\,\d t,$$ if the drift term $b$ satisfies that for any $x,y\in\R^d$, $$\langle b(x)-b(y),x-y\rangle\le \begin{cases} K_1|x-y|^2,& |x-y|\le L; -K_2|x-y|^2,& |x-y|> L \end{cases}$$ holds with some positive constants $K_1$, $K_2$ and $L>0$, then there is a constant $λ:=λ(K_1,K_2,L)>0$ such that for all $p\in[1,\infty)$, $t>0$ and $x,y\in\R^d$, $$W_p(δ_x P_t,δ_y P_t)\leq Ce^{-λt/p} \begin{cases} |x-y|^{1/p}, & \mbox{if } |x-y|\le 1; |x-y|, & \mbox{if } |x-y|> 1. \end{cases}$$ where $C:=C(K_1,K_2,L,p)$ is a positive constant. This improves the main result in \cite{Eberle} where the exponential convergence is only proved for the $L^1$-Wasserstein distance.

Laws of the iterated logarithm for symmetric jump processes

Based on two-sided heat kernel estimates for a class of symmetric jump processes on metric measure spaces, the laws of the iterated logarithm (LILs) for sample paths, local times and ranges are established. In particular, the LILs are obtained for $β$-stable-like processes on $α$-sets with $β>0$.

Kondo-induced hybrid topological insulator in two-dimensional electron system with a quadratic band crossing point

We investigate the Kondo effect in the two-dimensional electron system with a non-trivial quadratic energy band crossing point. We show that the Kondo effect can induce a new hybrid topological insulator phase which is a coexistence state of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the TRSbroken quantum spin Hall effect. This hybrid topological insulator exhibits not only a quantized charge Hall current but also a net spin current, which are localized at the edge boundaries. This peculiar topological state arises due to the interplay of two marginally relevant operators, i.e., the Kondo-coupling between the electrons and the local magnetic moment and the electron-electron interaction in the two-dimensional system.

Order O(1) algorithm for first-principles transient current through open quantum systems

In the study the response time of ultrafast transistor and peak transient current to prevent melt down of nano-chips, the first principles transient current calculation plays an essential role in nanoelectronics. The first principles calculation of transient current through nano-devices for a period of time T is known to be extremely time consuming with the best scaling TN^3 where N is the dimension of the device. In this work, we provide an order O(1) algorithm that reduces the computational complexity to T^0 N^3 for large systems. Benchmark calculation has been done on graphene nanoribbons with N = 10^4 confirming the O(1) scaling. This breakthrough allows us to tackle many large scale transient problems including magnetic tunneling junctions and ferroelectric tunneling junctions that cannot be touched before.

Anderson Localization from Berry-Curvature Interchange in Quantum Anomalous Hall System

We theoretically investigate the localization mechanism of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in the presence of spin-flip disorders. We show that the QAHE keeps quantized at weak disorders, then enters a Berry-curvature mediated metallic phase at moderate disorders, and finally goes into the Anderson insulating phase at strong disorders. From the phase diagram, we find that at the charge neutrality point although the QAHE is most robust against disorders, the corresponding metallic phase is much easier to be localized into the Anderson insulating phase due to the \textit{interchange} of Berry curvatures carried respectively by the conduction and valence bands. At the end, we provide a phenomenological picture related to the topological charges to better understand the underlying physical origin of the QAHE Anderson localization.
