Huygens-Fresnel Model Based Position-Aided Phase Configuration for 1-Bit RIS Assisted Wireless Communication

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), composed of nearly passive elements, is regarded as one of the potential paradigms to support multi-gigabit data in real-time. However, in traditional CSI (channel state information) driven frame, the training overhead of channel estimation greatly increases as the number of RIS elements increases to intelligently manipulate the reflected signals. To conveniently use the reflected signal without complex CSI feedback, in this paper we propose a position-aided phase configuration scheme based on the property of Fresnel zone. In particular, we design the impedance based discrete RIS elements with joint absorption mode and reflection mode considering the fabrication complexities, which integrated the property of the Fresnel zone to resist the impact of position error. Then, with joint absorption and 1-bit reflection mode elements, we develop the two-step position-aided ON/OFF states judgement (TPOSJ) scheme and the frame structure to control the ON/OFF state of RIS, followed by analyzing the impacts of mobility and position error on our proposed scheme. Also, we derive the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral theorem based power flow. Simulations show that the proposed scheme can manipulate the ON/OFF state intelligently without complex CSI, thus verifying the practical application of our proposed scheme.

Deep Learning-Based CSI Feedback for XL-MIMO Systems in the Near-Field Domain

In this paper, we consider an extremely large-scale massive multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) system. As the scale of antenna arrays increases, the range of near-field communications also expands. In this case, the signals no longer exhibit planar wave characteristics but spherical wave characteristics in the near-field channel, which makes the channel state information (CSI) highly complex. Additionally, the increase of the antenna arrays scale also makes the size of the CSI matrix significantly increase. Therefore, CSI feedback in the near-field channel becomes highly challenging. To solve this issue, we propose a deep-learning (DL)-based ExtendNLNet that can compress the CSI, and further reduce the overhead of CSI feedback. In addition, we have introduced the Non-Local block to obtain a larger area of CSI features. Simulation results show that the proposed ExtendNLNet can significantly improve the CSI recovery quality compared to other DL-based methods.

Employing High-Dimensional RIS Information for RIS-aided Localization Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems have attracted extensive research attention due to their accuracy enhancement capabilities. However, most studies primarily utilized the base stations (BS) received signal, i.e., BS information, for localization algorithm design, neglecting the potential of RIS received signal, i.e., RIS information. Compared with BS information, RIS information offers higher dimension and richer feature set, thereby significantly improving the ability to extract positions of the mobile users (MUs). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the algorithm design based on the high-dimensional RIS information. Specifically, we first propose a RIS information reconstruction (RIS-IR) algorithm to reconstruct the high-dimensional RIS information from the low-dimensional BS information. The proposed RIS-IR algorithm comprises a data processing module for preprocessing BS information, a convolution neural network (CNN) module for feature extraction, and an output module for outputting the reconstructed RIS information. Then, we propose a transfer learning based fingerprint (TFBF) algorithm that employs the reconstructed high-dimensional RIS information for MU localization. This involves adapting a pre-trained DenseNet-121 model to map the reconstructed RIS signal to the MU's three-dimensional (3D) position. Empirical results affirm that the localization performance is significantly influenced by the high-dimensional RIS information and maintains robustness against unoptimized phase shifts.

Multi-stream Transmission for Directional Modulation Network via Distributed Multi-UAV-aided Multi-active-IRS

Active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a revolutionary technique for the future 6G networks. The conventional far-field single-IRS-aided directional modulation(DM) networks have only one (no direct path) or two (existing direct path) degrees of freedom (DoFs). This means that there are only one or two streams transmitted simultaneously from base station to user and will seriously limit its rate gain achieved by IRS. How to create multiple DoFs more than two for DM? In this paper, single large-scale IRS is divided to multiple small IRSs and a novel multi-IRS-aided multi-stream DM network is proposed to achieve a point-to-point multi-stream transmission by creating $K$ ($\geq3$) DoFs, where multiple small IRSs are placed distributively via multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The null-space projection, zero-forcing (ZF) and phase alignment are adopted to design the transmit beamforming vector, receive beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM), respectively, called NSP-ZF-PA. Here, $K$ PSMs and their corresponding beamforming vectors are independently optimized. The weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE) algorithm is involved in alternating iteration for the optimization variables by introducing the power constraint on IRS, named WMMSE-PC, where the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is used to solve the total PSM. To achieve a lower computational complexity, a maximum trace method, called Max-TR-SVD, is proposed by optimize the PSM of all IRSs. Numerical simulation results has shown that the proposed NSP-ZF-PA performs much better than Max-TR-SVD in terms of rate. In particular, the rate of NSP-ZF-PA with sixteen small IRSs is about five times that of NSP-ZF-PA with combining all small IRSs as a single large IRS. Thus, a dramatic rate enhancement may be achieved by multiple distributed IRSs.

NMBEnet: Efficient Near-field mmWave Beam Training for Multiuser OFDM Systems Using Sub-6 GHz Pilots

Combining millimetre-wave (mmWave) communications with an extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) presents a promising avenue for meeting the spectral efficiency demands of the future sixth generation (6G) mobile communications. However, beam training for mmWave ELAA systems is challenged by excessive pilot overheads as well as insufficient accuracy, as the huge near-field codebook has to be accounted for. In this paper, inspired by the similarity between far-field sub-6 GHz channels and near-field mmWave channels, we propose to leverage sub-6 GHz uplink pilot signals to directly estimate the optimal near-field mmWave codeword, which aims to reduce pilot overhead and bypass the channel estimation. Moreover, we adopt deep learning to perform this dual mapping function, i.e., sub-6 GHz to mmWave, far-field to near-field, and a novel neural network structure called NMBEnet is designed to enhance the precision of beam training. Specifically, when considering the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication scenarios with high user density, correlations arise both between signals from different users and between signals from different subcarriers. Accordingly, the convolutional neural network (CNN) module and graph neural network (GNN) module included in the proposed NMBEnet can leverage these two correlations to further enhance the precision of beam training.

Active RIS-Aided Massive MIMO Uplink Systems with Low-Resolution ADCs

This letter considers an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user uplink massive multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The letter derives the closedform approximate expression for the sum achievable rate (AR), where the maximum ratio combination (MRC) processing and low-resolution ADCs are applied at the base station. The system performance is analyzed, and a genetic algorithm (GA)-based method is proposed to optimize the RIS's phase shifts for enhancing the system performance. Numerical results verify the accuracy of the derivations, and demonstrate that the active RIS has an evident performance gain over the passive RIS.

Anti-Byzantine Attacks Enabled Vehicle Selection for Asynchronous Federated Learning in Vehicular Edge Computing

In vehicle edge computing (VEC), asynchronous federated learning (AFL) is used, where the edge receives a local model and updates the global model, effectively reducing the global aggregation latency.Due to different amounts of local data, computing capabilities and locations of the vehicles, renewing the global model with same weight is inappropriate. The above factors will affect the local calculation time and upload time of the local model, and the vehicle may also be affected by Byzantine attacks, leading to the deterioration of the vehicle data. However, based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we can consider these factors comprehensively to eliminate vehicles with poor performance as much as possible and exclude vehicles that have suffered Byzantine attacks before AFL. At the same time, when aggregating AFL, we can focus on those vehicles with better performance to improve the accuracy and safety of the system. In this paper, we proposed a vehicle selection scheme based on DRL in VEC. In this scheme, vehicle s mobility, channel conditions with temporal variations, computational resources with temporal variations, different data amount, transmission channel status of vehicles as well as Byzantine attacks were taken into account.Simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively improves the safety and accuracy of the global model.

Pseudo MIMO (pMIMO): An Energy and Spectral Efficient MIMO-OFDM System

This article introduces an energy and spectral efficient multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) transmission scheme designed for the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks. The approach involves connecting each receiving radio frequency (RF) chain with multiple antenna elements and conducting sample-level adjustments for receiving beamforming patterns. The proposed system architecture and the dedicated signal processing methods enable the scheme to transmit a bigger number of parallel data streams than the number of receiving RF chains, achieving a spectral efficiency performance close to that of a fully digital (FD) MIMO system with the same number of antenna elements, each equipped with an RF chain. We refer to this system as a ''pseudo MIMO'' system due to its ability to mimic the functionality of additional invisible RF chains. The article begins with introducing the underlying principles of pseudo MIMO and discussing potential hardware architectures for its implementation. We then highlight several advantages of integrating pseudo MIMO into next-generation wireless networks. To demonstrate the superiority of our proposed pseudo MIMO transmission scheme to conventional MIMO systems, simulation results are presented. Additionally, we validate the feasibility of this new scheme by building the first pseudo MIMO prototype. Furthermore, we present some key challenges and outline potential directions for future research.

Near-Field Multiuser Beam-Training for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems are capable of improving spectral efficiency by employing far more antennas than conventional massive MIMO at the base station (BS). However, beam training in multiuser XL-MIMO systems is challenging. To tackle these issues, we conceive a three-phase graph neural network (GNN)-based beam training scheme for multiuser XL-MIMO systems. In the first phase, only far-field wide beams have to be tested for each user and the GNN is utilized to map the beamforming gain information of the far-field wide beams to the optimal near-field beam for each user. In addition, the proposed GNN-based scheme can exploit the position-correlation between adjacent users for further improvement of the accuracy of beam training. In the second phase, a beam allocation scheme based on the probability vectors produced at the outputs of GNNs is proposed to address the above beam-direction conflicts between users. In the third phase, the hybrid TBF is designed for further reducing the inter-user interference. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the beam training performance of the benchmarks. Moreover, the performance of the proposed beam training scheme approaches that of an exhaustive search, despite requiring only about 7% of the pilot overhead.

Deep Learning-Based CSI Feedback for RIS-Aided Massive MIMO Systems with Time Correlation

In this paper, we consider an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided frequency division duplex (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink system. In the FDD systems, the downlink channel state information (CSI) should be sent to the base station through the feedback link. However, the overhead of CSI feedback occupies substantial uplink bandwidth resources in RIS-aided communication systems. In this work, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based scheme to reduce the overhead of CSI feedback by compressing the cascaded CSI. In the practical RIS-aided communication systems, the cascaded channel at the adjacent slots inevitably has time correlation. We use long short-term memory to learn time correlation, which can help the neural network to improve the recovery quality of the compressed CSI. Moreover, the attention mechanism is introduced to further improve the CSI recovery quality. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed DLbased scheme can significantly outperform other DL-based methods in terms of the CSI recovery quality

Large-Scale RIS Enabled Air-Ground Channels: Near-Field Modeling and Analysis

Existing works mainly rely on the far-field planar-wave-based channel model to assess the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-enabled wireless communication systems. However, when the transmitter and receiver are in near-field ranges, this will result in relatively low computing accuracy. To tackle this challenge, we initially develop an analytical framework for sub-array partitioning. This framework divides the large-scale RIS array into multiple sub-arrays, effectively reducing modeling complexity while maintaining acceptable accuracy. Then, we develop a beam domain channel model based on the proposed sub-array partition framework for large-scale RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle communication systems, which can be used to efficiently capture the sparse features in RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle channels in both near-field and far-field ranges. Furthermore, some important propagation characteristics of the proposed channel model, including the spatial cross-correlation functions (CCFs), temporal auto-correlation functions (ACFs), frequency correlation functions (CFs), and channel capacities with respect to the different physical features of the RIS and non-stationary properties of the channel model are derived and analyzed. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed framework is helpful to achieve a good tradeoff between model complexity and accuracy for investigating the channel propagation characteristics, and therefore providing highly-efficient communications in RIS-enabled UAV-to-vehicle wireless networks.

RIS-Aided Localization Algorithm and Analysis: Tackling Non-Gaussian Angle Estimation Errors

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided localization systems are increasingly recognized for enhancing accuracy in internet of things (IoT) networks. However, prevailing studies tend to either assume a Gaussian distribution for angle estimation error (AEE) or directly neglect the impact of the AEE, overlooking its non-Gaussian nature in real-world scenarios, particularly with diverse estimation methods (e.g., 2D-DFT algorithm). Addressing this oversight, this paper explores the design and performance analysis of RIS-aided localization systems, specifically tackling non-Gaussian AEE. We adopt the classical two-step three-dimensional (3D) localization scheme to determine the position of mobile user (MU). Initially, we estimate angles of arrival (AoAs) and time differences of arrival (TDoAs) at the RIS using different methods, resulting in non-Gaussian and Gaussian errors, respectively. Subsequently, to accommodate the non-Gaussian nature of AoAs errors and the Gaussian character of TDoA errors, we design a multiple weighted least squares (mWLS) algorithm to accurately localize MU. Besides, our research also includes a unique bias analysis for evaluating the performance of the proposed localization algorithm under both Gaussian and non-Gaussian errors. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the proposed mWLS algorithm and the bias analysis methodology.

A Novel Tree Model-based DNN to Achieve a High-Resolution DOA Estimation via Massive MIMO receive array

To satisfy the high-resolution requirements of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, conventional deep neural network (DNN)-based methods using grid idea need to significantly increase the number of output classifications and also produce a huge high model complexity. To address this problem, a multi-level tree-based DNN model (TDNN) is proposed as an alternative, where each level takes small-scale multi-layer neural networks (MLNNs) as nodes to divide the target angular interval into multiple sub-intervals, and each output class is associated to a MLNN at the next level. Then the number of MLNNs is gradually increasing from the first level to the last level, and so increasing the depth of tree will dramatically raise the number of output classes to improve the estimation accuracy. More importantly, this network is extended to make a multi-emitter DOA estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed TDNN performs much better than conventional DNN and root-MUSIC at extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and can achieve Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Additionally, in the multi-emitter scenario, the proposed Q-TDNN has also made a substantial performance enhancement over DNN and Root-MUSIC, and this gain grows as the number of emitters increases.

Blockchain-Enabled Variational Information Bottleneck for IoT Networks

In Internet of Things (IoT) networks, the amount of data sensed by user devices may be huge, resulting in the serious network congestion. To solve this problem, intelligent data compression is critical. The variational information bottleneck (VIB) approach, combined with machine learning, can be employed to train the encoder and decoder, so that the required transmission data size can be reduced significantly. However, VIB suffers from the computing burden and network insecurity. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-enabled VIB (BVIB) approach to relieve the computing burden while guaranteeing network security. Extensive simulations conducted by Python and C++ demonstrate that BVIB outperforms VIB by 36%, 22% and 57% in terms of time and CPU cycles cost, mutual information, and accuracy under attack, respectively.

Power Allocation and Beamforming Design for IRS-aided Secure Directional Modulation Network

With the aim of boosting the security of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network, a secure DM network assisted by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is investigated in this paper. To maximize the secrecy rate (SR), we jointly optimize the power allocation (PA) factor, confidential message (CM) beamforming, artificial noise (AN) beamforming, and IRS reflected beamforming. To tackle the formulated problem, a maximizing SR with high-performance (Max-SR-HP) scheme is proposed, where the PA factor, CM beamforming, AN beamforming, and IRS phase shift matrix are derived by the derivative operation, generalized Rayleigh-Ritz, generalized power iteration, and semidefinite relaxation criteria, respectively. Given that the high complexity of the above scheme, a maximizing SR with low-complexity (Max-SR-LC) scheme is proposed, which employs the generalized leakage and successive convex approximation algorithms to derive the variables. Simulation results show that both the proposed schemes can significantly boost the SR performance, and are better than the equal PA, no IRS and random phase shift IRS schemes.

OTFS vs OFDM: Which is Superior in Multiuser LEO Satellite Communications

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, a delay-Doppler (DD) domain communication scheme exhibiting strong robustness against the Doppler shifts, has the potentials to be employed in LEO satellite communications. However, the performance comparison with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and the resource allocation scheme for multiuser OTFS-based LEO satellite communication system have rarely been investigated. In this paper, we conduct a performance comparison under various channel conditions between the OTFS and OFDM modulations, encompassing evaluations of sum-rate and bit error ratio (BER). Additionally, we investigate the joint optimal allocation of power and delay-Doppler resource blocks aiming at maximizing sum-rate for multiuser downlink OTFS-based LEO satellite communication systems. Unlike the conventional modulations relaying on complex input-output relations within the Time-Frequency (TF) domain, the OTFS modulation exploits both time and frequency diversities, i.e., delay and Doppler shifts remain constant during a OTFS frame, which facilitates a DD domain input-output simple relation for our investigation. We transform the resulting non-convex and combinatorial optimization problem into an equivalent difference of convex problem by decoupling the conditional constraints, and solve the transformed problem via penalty convex-concave procedure algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the OTFS modulation is robust to carrier frequency offsets (CFO) caused by high-mobility of LEO satellites, and has superior performance to the OFDM modulation. Moreover, numerical results indicate that our proposed resource allocation scheme has higher sum-rate than existed schemes for the OTFS modulation, such as delay divided multiple access and Doppler divided multiple access, especially in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.

Energy-Efficient Clustered Cell-Free Networking with Access Point Selection

Ultra-densely deploying access points (APs) to support the increasing data traffic would significantly escalate the cell-edge problem resulting from traditional cellular networks. By removing the cell boundaries and coordinating all APs for joint transmission, the cell-edge problem can be alleviated, which in turn leads to unaffordable system complexity and channel measurement overhead. A new scalable clustered cell-free network architecture has been proposed recently, under which the large-scale network is flexibly partitioned into a set of independent subnetworks operating parallelly. In this paper, we study the energy-efficient clustered cell-free networking problem with AP selection. Specifically, we propose a user-centric ratio-fixed AP-selection based clustering (UCR-ApSel) algorithm to form subnetworks dynamically. Following this, we analyze the average energy efficiency achieved with the proposed UCR-ApSel scheme theoretically and derive an effective closed-form upper-bound. Based on the analytical upper-bound expression, the optimal AP-selection ratio that maximizes the average energy efficiency is further derived as a simple explicit function of the total number of APs and the number of subnetworks. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the derived optimal AP-selection ratio and show that the proposed UCR-ApSel algorithm with the optimal AP-selection ratio achieves around 40% higher energy efficiency than the baselines. The analysis provides important insights to the design and optimization of future ultra-dense wireless communication systems.

Joint Power Allocation and Beamforming for Active IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network

To boost the secrecy rate (SR) of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network and overcome the double fading effect of the cascaded channels of passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), a novel active IRS-assisted DM system with a power adjusting strategy between transmitter and active IRS is proposed in this paper. Then, a joint optimization of maximizing the SR is cast by alternately optimizing the power allocation (PA) factors, transmit beamforming, receive beamforming, and reflect beamforming at IRS, subject to the power constraint at IRS. To tackle the formulated non-convex optimization problem, a high-performance scheme of maximizing SR based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and Schur complement (Max-SR-SS) is proposed, where the derivative operation are employed to optimize the PA factors, the generalized Rayleigh-Rize theorem is adopted to derive the receive beamforming, and the SCA strategy is utilized to design the transmit beamforming and phase shift matrix of IRS. To reduce the high complexity, a low-complexity scheme, named maximizing SR based on equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) and majorization-minimization (MM) (Max-SR-EM), is developed, where the EAR and MM methods are adopted to derive the amplitude and phase of the IRS phase shift matrix, respectively. In particular, when the receivers are single antenna, a scheme of maximizing SR based on alternating optimization (Max-SR-AO) is proposed, where the PA factors, transmit and reflect beamforming are derived by the fractional programming (FP) and SCA algorithms. Simulation results show that with the same power constraint, the SR gains achieved by the proposed schemes outperform those of the fixed PA and passive IRS schemes.
