Beamforming Optimization for Active RIS-Aided Multiuser Communications With Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we consider an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to assist the multiuser downlink transmission in the presence of practical hardware impairments (HWIs), including the HWIs at the transceivers and the phase noise at the active RIS. The active RIS is deployed to amplify the incident signals to alleviate the multiplicative fading effect, which is a limitation in the conventional passive RIS-aided wireless systems. We aim to maximize the sum rate through jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS), the amplification factors and the phase shifts at the active RIS. To tackle this challenging optimization problem effectively, we decouple it into two tractable subproblems. Subsequently, each subproblem is transformed into a second order cone programming problem. The block coordinate descent framework is applied to tackle them, where the transmit beamforming and the reflection coefficients are alternately designed. In addition, another efficient algorithm is presented to reduce the computational complexity. Specifically, by exploiting the majorization-minimization approach, each subproblem is reformulated into a tractable surrogate problem, whose closed-form solutions are obtained by Lagrange dual decomposition approach and element-wise alternating sequential optimization method. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our developed algorithms, and reveal that the HWIs significantly limit the system performance of active RIS-empowered wireless communications. Furthermore, the active RIS noticeably boosts the sum rate under the same total power budget, compared with the passive RIS.

Spectral Efficiency Maximization for Active RIS-aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems with Imperfect CSI

A cell-free network merged with active reconfigurable reflecting surfaces (RIS) is investigated in this paper. Based on the imperfect channel state information (CSI), the aggregated channel from the user to the access point (AP) is initially estimated using the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) technique. The central processing unit (CPU) then detects uplink data from individual users through the utilization of the maximum ratio combining (MRC) approach, relying on the estimated channel. Then, a closed-form expression for uplink spectral efficiency (SE) is derived which demonstrates its reliance on statistical CSI (S-CSI) alone. The amplitude gain of each active RIS element is derived in a closed-form expression as a function of the number of active RIS elements, the number of users, and the size of each reflecting element. A soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm is utilized to design the phase shift of the active RIS to maximize the uplink SE. Simulation results emphasize the robustness of the proposed SAC algorithm, showcasing its effectiveness in cell-free networks under the influence of imperfect CSI.

Active RIS Aided ISAC Systems: Beamforming Design and Performance Analysis

This paper considers an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. We aim to maximize radar signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) by jointly optimizing the beamforming matrix at the dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) base station (BS) and the reflecting coefficients at the active RIS subject to the quality of service (QoS) constraints of communication users (UE) and the transmit power constraints of active RIS and DFRC BS. To tackle the optimization problem, the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is applied to address the nonconvex radar SINR objective function, and the resulting quartic problem is solved by developing an semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based approach. Moreover, we derive the scaling order of the radar SINR with a large number of reflecting elements. Next, the transmit power allocation problem and the deployment strategy of the active RIS are studied with a moderate number of reflecting elements. Finally, we validate the potential of the active RIS in ISAC systems compared to passive RIS. Additionally, we deliberate on several open problems that remain for future research.

Two Enhanced-rate Power Allocation Strategies for Active IRS-assisted Wireless Network

Due to its ability of overcoming the impact of double-fading effect, active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has attracted a lot of attention. Unlike passive IRS, active IRS should be supplied by power, thus adjusting power between base station (BS) and IRS having a direct impact on the system rate performance. In this paper, the active IRS-aided network under a total power constraint is modeled with an ability of adjusting power between BS and IRS. Given the transmit beamforming at BS and reflecting beamforming at IRS, the SNR expression is derived to be a function of power allocation (PA) factor, and the optimization of maximizing the SNR is given. Subsequently, two high-performance PA strategies, enhanced multiple random initialization Newton's (EMRIN) and Taylor polynomial approximation (TPA), are proposed. The former is to improve the rate performance of classic Netwon's method to avoid involving a local optimal point by using multiple random initializations. To reduce its high computational complexity, the latter provides a closed-form solution by making use of the first-order Taylor polynomial approximation to the original SNR function. Actually, using TPA, the original optimization problem is transformed into a problem of finding a root for a third-order polynomial.Simulation results are as follows: the first-order TPA of SNR fit its exact expression well, the proposed two PA methods performs much better than fixed PA in accordance with rate, and appoaches exhaustive search as the number of IRS reflecting elements goes to large-scale.

High-performance Power Allocation Strategies for Active IRS-aided Wireless Network

Due to its intrinsic ability to combat the double fading effect, the active intelligent reflective surface (IRS) becomes popular. The main feature of active IRS must be supplied by power, and the problem of how to allocate the total power between base station (BS) and IRS to fully explore the rate gain achieved by power allocation (PA) to remove the rate gap between existing PA strategies and optimal exhaustive search (ES) arises naturally. First, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) expression is derived to be a function of PA factor beta [0, 1]. Then, to improve the rate performance of the conventional gradient ascent (GA), an equal-spacing-multiple-point-initialization GA (ESMPI-GA) method is proposed. Due to its slow linear convergence from iterative GA, the proposed ESMPI-GA is high-complexity. Eventually, to reduce this high complexity, a low-complexity closed-form PA method with third-order Taylor expansion (TTE) centered at point beta0 = 0.5 is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed ESMPI-GA and TTE obviously outperform existing methods like equal PA.

Quantized RIS-aided mmWave Massive MIMO Channel Estimation with Uniform Planar Arrays

In this paper, we investigate a cascaded channel estimation method for a millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with the BS equipped with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), where the BS and the RIS are both equipped with a uniform planar array (UPA). Due to the sparse property of mmWave channel, the channel estimation can be solved as a compressed sensing (CS) problem. However, the low-resolution quantization cause severe information loss of signals, and traditional CS algorithms are unable to work well. To recovery the signal and the sparse angular domain channel from quantization, we introduce Bayesian inference and efficient vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm to solve the quantize output CS problem. To further improve the efficiency of the VAMP algorithm, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) based fast computation method is derived. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the accuracy of the proposed cascaded channel estimation method for the RIS-aided mmWave massive MIMO system with few-bit ADCs. Furthermore, the proposed channel estimation method can reach an acceptable performance gap between the low-resolution ADCs and the infinite ADCs for the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which implies the applicability of few-bit ADCs in practice.

Vehicle Selection for C-V2X Mode 4 Based Federated Edge Learning Systems

Federated learning (FL) is a promising technology for vehicular networks to protect vehicles' privacy in Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Vehicles with limited computation capacity may face a large computational burden associated with FL. Federated edge learning (FEEL) systems are introduced to solve such a problem. In FEEL systems, vehicles adopt the cellular-vehicle to everything (C-V2X) mode 4 to upload encrypted data to road side units' (RSUs)' cache queue. Then RSUs train the data transmitted by vehicles, update the locally model hyperparameters and send back results to vehicles, thus vehicles' computational burden can be released. However, each RSU has limited cache queue. To maintain the stability of cache queue and maximize the accuracy of model, it is essential to select appropriate vehicles to upload data. The vehicle selection method for FEEL systems faces challenges due to the random departure of data from the cache queue caused by the stochastic channel and the different system status of vehicles, such as remaining data amount, transmission delay, packet collision probability and survival ability. This paper proposes a vehicle selection method for FEEL systems that aims to maximize the accuracy of model while keeping the cache queue stable. Extensive simulation experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms other baseline selection methods.

6G Network AI Architecture for Everyone-Centric Customized Services

Mobile communication standards were developed for enhancing transmission and network performance by using more radio resources and improving spectrum and energy efficiency. How to effectively address diverse user requirements and guarantee everyone's Quality of Experience (QoE) remains an open problem. The Sixth Generation (6G) mobile systems will solve this problem by utilizing heterogenous network resources and pervasive intelligence to support everyone-centric customized services anywhere and anytime. In this article, we first coin the concept of Service Requirement Zone (SRZ) on the user side to characterize and visualize the integrated service requirements and preferences of specific tasks of individual users. On the system side, we further introduce the concept of User Satisfaction Ratio (USR) to evaluate the system's overall service ability of satisfying a variety of tasks with different SRZs. Then, we propose a network Artificial Intelligence (AI) architecture with integrated network resources and pervasive AI capabilities for supporting customized services with guaranteed QoEs. Finally, extensive simulations show that the proposed network AI architecture can consistently offer a higher USR performance than the cloud AI and edge AI architectures with respect to different task scheduling algorithms, random service requirements, and dynamic network conditions.

URLLC-Awared Resource Allocation for Heterogeneous Vehicular Edge Computing

Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is a promising technology to support real-time vehicular applications, where vehicles offload intensive computation tasks to the nearby VEC server for processing. However, the traditional VEC that relies on single communication technology cannot well meet the communication requirement for task offloading, thus the heterogeneous VEC integrating the advantages of dedicated short-range communications (DSRC), millimeter-wave (mmWave) and cellular-based vehicle to infrastructure (C-V2I) is introduced to enhance the communication capacity. The communication resource allocation and computation resource allocation may significantly impact on the ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) performance and the VEC system utility, in this case, how to do the resource allocations is becoming necessary. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous VEC with multiple communication technologies and various types of tasks, and propose an effective resource allocation policy to minimize the system utility while satisfying the URLLC requirement. We first formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system utility under the URLLC constraint which modeled by the moment generating function (MGF)-based stochastic network calculus (SNC), then we present a Lyapunov-guided deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method to convert and solve the optimization problem. Extensive simulation experiments illustrate that the proposed resource allocation approach is effective.

Two Efficient Beamforming Methods for Hybrid IRS-aided AF Relay Wireless Networks

Due to the double fading effect caused by conventional passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), the signal via the reflection link is weak. To enhance the received signal, active elements with the ability to amplify the reflected signal are introduced to the passive IRS forming hybrid IRS. In this paper, we propose a hybrid IRS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay wireless network, where an optimization problem is formulated, which is subject to the constraints of transmit power budgets at the source/AF relay/hybrid IRS and that of unit modulus for passive IRS elements. By alternately designing the beamforming matrix at AF relay and the reflecting coefficient matrices at IRS, signal-to-noise ratio can be maximized. To achieve high rate performance and extend the coverage range, a high-performance method based on semidefinite relaxation and fractional programming (HP-SDR-FP) algorithm is presented. Due to its extremely high complexity, a low-complexity method based on whitening filter, general power iterative and generalized Rayleigh-Ritz (WF-GPI-GRR) is proposed, which is different from HP-SDR-FP method. It is assumed that the amplifying coefficient of each active IRS element is equal, and the corresponding analytical solution of the amplifying coefficient can be obtained according to the transmit powers at AF relay and hybrid IRS. Simulation results show that the proposed two methods can greatly improve the rate performance compared to the existing networks, such as the passive IRS-aided AF relay and only AF relay network. In particular, a 50.0% rate gain over the existing networks is approximately achieved in the high power budget region of hybrid IRS. Moreover, it is verified that the proposed HP-SDR-FP method perform better than WF-GPI-GRR method in terms of rate performance.

Performance Analysis of Discrete-Phase-Shifter IRS-aided Amplify-and-Forward Relay Network

As a new technology to reconfigure wireless communication environment by signal reflection controlled by software, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has attracted lots of attention in recent years. Compared with conventional relay system, the relay system aided by IRS can effectively save the cost and energy consumption, and significantly enhance the system performance. However, the phase quantization error generated by IRS with discrete phase shifter may degrade the receiving performance of the receiver. To analyze the performance loss arising from IRS phase quantization error, in accordance with the law of large numbers and Rayleigh distribution, the closed-form expressions for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance loss and achievable rate of the double IRS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network, which are associated with the number of phase shifter quantization bits, are derived in the Rayleigh channels. In addition, their approximate performance loss closed-form expressions are also derived based on the Taylor series expansion. Simulation results show that the performance losses of SNR and achievable rate decrease with the number of quantization bits increases gradually, and increase with the number $k$ of IRS phase shift elements. The SNR and achievable rate performance losses of the system are smaller than 0.06dB and 0.03bits/s/Hz when $k$ is equal to 4 and 3, respectively.

IRS-Enabled Covert and Reliable Communications: How Many Reflection Elements are Required?

Short-packet communications are applied to various scenarios where transmission covertness and reliability are crucial due to the open wireless medium and finite blocklength. Although intelligent reflection surface (IRS) has been widely utilized to enhance transmission covertness and reliability, the question of how many reflection elements at IRS are required remains unanswered, which is vital to system design and practical deployment. The inherent strong coupling exists between the transmission covertness and reliability by IRS, leading to the question of intractability. To address this issue, the detection error probability at the warder and its approximation are derived first to reveal the relation between covertness performance and the number of reflection elements. Besides, to evaluate the reliability performance of the system, the decoding error probability at the receiver is also derived. Subsequently, the asymptotic reliability performance in high covertness regimes is investigated, which provides theoretical predictions about the number of reflection elements at IRS required to achieve a decoding error probability close to 0 with given covertness requirements. Furthermore, Monte-Carlo simulations verify the accuracy of the derived results for detection (decoding) error probabilities and the validity of the theoretical predictions for reflection elements. Moreover, results show that more reflection elements are required to achieve high reliability with tighter covertness requirements, longer blocklength and higher transmission rates.

Energy Minimization for Active RIS-Aided UAV-Enabled SWIPT Systems

In this paper, we consider an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)-enabled simultaneous wireless information and power transfer(SWIPT) system with multiple ground users. Compared with the conventional passive RIS, the active RIS deploying the internally integrated amplifiers can offset part of the multiplicative fading. In this system, we deal with an optimization problem of minimizing the total energy cost of the UAV. Specifically, we alternately optimize the trajectories, the hovering time, and the reflection vectors at the active RIS by using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Simulation results show that the active RIS performs better in energy saving than the conventional passive RIS.

Machine-learning-aided Massive Hybrid Analog and Digital MIMO DOA Estimation for Future Wireless Networks

Due to a high spatial angle resolution and low circuit cost of massive hybrid analog and digital (HAD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), it is viewed as a valuable green communication technology for future wireless networks. Combining a massive HAD-MIMO with direction of arrival (DOA) will provide a high-precision even ultra-high-precision DOA measurement performance approaching the fully-digital (FD) MIMO. However, phase ambiguity is a challenge issue for a massive HAD-MIMO DOA estimation. In this paper, we review three aspects: detection, estimation, and Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) with low-resolution ADCs at receiver. First, a multi-layer-neural-network (MLNN) detector is proposed to infer the existence of passive emitters. Then, a two-layer HAD (TLHAD) MIMO structure is proposed to eliminate phase ambiguity using only one-snapshot. Simulation results show that the proposed MLNN detector is much better than both the existing generalized likelihood ratio test (GRLT) and the ratio of maximum eigen-value (Max-EV) to minimum eigen-value (R-MaxEV-MinEV) in terms of detection probability. Additionally, the proposed TLHAD structure can achieve the corresponding CRLB using single snapshot.

Two-Timescale Transmission Design for RIS-Aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

This paper investigates the performance of a two-timescale transmission design for uplink reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) systems. We consider the Rician channel model and design the passive beamforming of RISs based on the long-time statistical channel state information (CSI), while the central processing unit (CPU) utilizes the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technology to perform fully centralized processing based on the instantaneous overall channel, which are the superposition of the direct and RIS-reflected channels. Firstly, we derive the closed-form approximate expression of the uplink achievable rate for arbitrary numbers of access point (AP) antennas and RIS reflecting elements. Relying on the derived expressions, we theoretically analyze the benefits of deploying RIS into cell-free mMIMO systems and draw explicit insights. Then, based on the closed-form approximate rate expression under statistical CSI, we optimize the phase shifts of RISs based on the genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and minimum rate of users, respectively. Finally, the numerical results demonstrate the correctness of our derived expressions and the benefits of deploying large-size RISs into cell-free mMIMO systems. Also, we investigate the optimality and convergence behaviors of the GA to verify its effectiveness. To give more beneficial analysis, we give the closed-form expression of the energy efficiency and present numerical results to show the high energy efficiency of the system with the help of RISs. Besides, our results have revealed the benefits of distributed deployment of APs and RISs in the RIS-aided mMIMO system with cell-free networks.

Covert and Reliable Short-Packet Communications against A Proactive Warder

Wireless short-packet communications pose challenges to the security and reliability of the transmission. Besides, the proactive warder compounds these challenges, who detects and interferes with the potential transmission. An extra jamming channel is introduced by the proactive warder compared with the passive one, resulting in the inapplicability of analytical methods and results in exsiting works. Thus, effective system design schemes are required for short-packet communications against the proactive warder. To address this issue, we consider the analysis and design of covert and reliable transmissions for above systems. Specifically, to investigate the reliable and covert performance of the system, detection error probability at the warder and decoding error probability at the receiver are derived, which is affected by both the transmit power and the jamming power. Furthermore, to maximize the effective throughput, an optimization framework is proposed under reliability and covertness constraints. Numerical results verify the accuracy of analytical results and the feasibility of the optimization framework. It is shown that the tradeoff between transmission reliability and covertness is changed by the proactive warder compared with the passive one. Besides, it is shown that longer blocklength is always beneficial to improve the throughput for systems with optimized transmission rates. But when transmission rates are fixed, the blocklength should be carefully designed since the maximum one is not optimal in this case.

Dynamic Sub-array Based Modeling for Large-Scale RIS-assisted mmWave UAV Channels

Large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can effectively enhance the performance of millimeter wave (mmWave) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to ground communication link with obstructed line-of-sight (LoS) path by exploiting more reflecting units. However, the non-negligible array dimension of large-scale RIS and the mobile property of the terminals bring significant variations in propagation characteristics, making conventional channel models inapplicable. To address this issue, we propose a dynamic sub-array partition scheme to divide the large-scale RIS into sub-arrays by exploiting the Rayleigh distance criterion and the mobile property of the transceivers. Based on the proposed scheme, a novel non-stationary channel model for large-scale RIS auxiliary mmWave UAV-to-ground mobile networks is developed, which outperforms existing models with well balance between model complexity and accuracy. Numerical results are provided to verify our analysis.

DOA Estimation Using Massive Receive MIMO: Basic Principle and Key Techniques

As massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) becomes popular, direction of arrival (DOA) measurement has been made a real renaissance due to the high-resolution achieved. Thus, there is no doubt about DOA estimation using massive MIMO. The purpose of this paper is to describe its basic principles and key techniques, to present the performance analysis, and to appreciate its engineering applications. It is anticipated that there are still many challenges in DOA estimation using massive receive MIMO, such as high circuit cost, high energy consumption and high complexity of the algorithm implementation. New researches and breakthroughs are illustrated to deal with those problems. Then, a new architecture, hybrid analog and digital (HAD) massive receive MIMO with low-resolution ADCs, is presented to strike a good balance among circuit cost, complexity and performance. Then, a novel three-dimensional (3D) angle of arrival (AOA) localization method based on geometrical center is proposed to compute the position of a passive emitter using single base station equipped with an ultra-massive MIMO system. And, it can achieve the Cramer-Rao low bound (CRLB). Here, the performance loss is also analyzed to quantify the minimum number of bits. DOA estimation will play a key role in lots of applications, such as directional modulation, beamforming tracking and alignment for 6G.
