Asymptotic Performance Analysis of Large-Scale Active IRS-Aided Wireless Network

In this paper, the dominant factor affecting the performance of active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication networks in Rayleigh fading channel, namely the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) $γ_0$ at IRS, is studied. Making use of the weak law of large numbers, its simple asymptotic expression is derived as the number $N$ of IRS elements goes to medium-scale and large-scale. When $N$ tends to large-scale, the asymptotic received SNR at user is proved to be a linear increasing function of a product of $γ_0$ and $N$. Subsequently, when the BS transmit power is fixed, there exists an optimal limited reflective power at IRS. At this point, more IRS reflect power will degrade the SNR performance. Additionally, under the total power sum constraint of the BS transmit power and the power reflected by the IRS, an optimal power allocation (PA) strategy is derived and shown to achieve 0.83 bit rate gain over equal PA. Finally, an IRS with finite phase shifters being taken into account, generates phase quantization errors, and further leads to a degradation of receive performance. The corresponding closed-form performance loss expressions for user's asymptotic SNR, achievable rate (AR), and bit error rate (BER) are derived for active IRS. Numerical simulation results show that a 3-bit discrete phase shifter is required to achieve a trivial performance loss for a large-scale active IRS.

Resource Allocation in Cell-Free MU-MIMO Multicarrier System with Finite and Infinite Blocklength

The explosive growth of data results in more scarce spectrum resources. It is important to optimize the system performance under limited resources. In this paper, we investigate how to achieve weighted throughput (WTP) maximization for cell-free (CF) multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) multicarrier (MC) systems through resource allocation (RA), in the cases of finite blocklength (FBL) and infinite blocklength (INFBL) regimes. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, particularly for the block error rate (BLER) and latency in the FBL regime, the WTP gets maximized under the constraints of total power consumption and required QoS metrics. Since the channels vary in different subcarriers (SCs) and inter-user interference strengths, the WTP can be maximized by scheduling the best users in each time-frequency (TF) resource and advanced beamforming design, while the resources can be fully utilized. With this motivation, we propose a joint user scheduling (US) and beamforming design algorithm based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) and gene-aided (GA) algorithms, to address a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RA outperforms the comparison schemes. And the CF system in our scenario is capable of achieving higher spectral efficiency than the centralized antenna systems (CAS).

DOA Estimation for Hybrid Massive MIMO Systems using Mixed-ADCs: Performance Loss and Energy Efficiency

Due to the power consumption and high circuit cost in antenna arrays, the practical application of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in the sixth generation (6G) and future wireless networks is still challenging. Employing low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and hybrid analog and digital (HAD) structure is two low-cost choice with acceptable performance loss.In this paper, the combination of the mixed-ADC architecture and HAD structure employed at receiver is proposed for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, which will be applied to the beamforming tracking and alignment in 6G. By adopting the additive quantization noise model, the exact closed-form expression of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the HAD architecture with mixed-ADCs is derived. Moreover, the closed-form expression of the performance loss factor is derived as a benchmark. In addition, to take power consumption into account, energy efficiency is also investigated in our paper. The numerical results reveal that the HAD structure with mixed-ADCs can significantly reduce the power consumption and hardware cost. Furthermore, that architecture is able to achieve a better trade-off between the performance loss and the power consumption. Finally, adopting 2-4 bits of resolution may be a good choice in practical massive MIMO systems.

Two Low-complexity Efficient Beamformers for IRS-and-UAV-aided Directional Modulation Networks

As the excellent tools for aiding communication, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can extend the coverage area, remove blind area, and achieve a dramatic rate improvement. In this paper, we improve the secrecy rate (SR) performance at directional modulation (DM) networks using IRS and UAV in combination. To fully explore the benefits of IRS and UAV, two efficient methods are proposed to enhance SR performance. The first approach computes the confidential message (CM) beamforming vector by maximizing the SR, and the signal-to-leakage-noise ratio (SLNR) method is used to optimize the IRS phase shift matrix, which is called Max-SR-SLNR. Here, Eve is maximally interfered by transmitting artificial noise (AN) along the direct path and null-space projection (NSP) on the remaining two channels. To reduce the computational complexity, the CM, AN beamforming and IRS phase shift design are independently designed in the following methods. The CM beamforming vector is constructed based on maximum ratio transmission (MRT) criteria along the channel from Alice-to-IRS, and phase shift matrix of IRS is directly given by phase alignment (PA) method. This method is called MRT-NSP-PA. Simulation results show that the SR performance of the Max-SR-SLNR method outperforms the MRT-NSP-PA method in the cases of small-scale and medium-scale IRSs, and the latter approaches the former in performance as IRS tends to lager-scale.

Three High-rate Beamforming Methods for Active IRS-aided Wireless Network

Due to its ability of breaking the double-fading effect experienced by passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), active IRS is evolving a potential technique for future 6G wireless networks. To fully exploit the amplifying gain achieved by active IRS, two high-rate methods, maximum ratio reflecting (MRR) and selective ratio reflecting (SRR) are presented, which are motivated by maximum ratio combining and selective ratio combining. Moreover, both MRR and SRR are in closed-form expressions. To further improve the rate, a maximum approximate-signal-to-noise ratio (Max-ASNR) is first proposed with an alternately iterative infrastructure between adjusting the norm of beamforming vector and its normalized vector. This may make a substantial rate enhancement over existing equal-gain reflecting (EGR). Simulation results show that the proposed three methods perform much better than existing method EGR in terms of rate. They are in decreasing order of rate performance: Max-ASNR, MRR, SRR, and EGR.

Enhanced-rate Iterative Beamformers for Active IRS-assisted Wireless Communications

Compared to passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), active IRS is viewed as a more efficient promising technique to combat the double-fading impact in IRS-aided wireless network. In this paper, in order to boost the achievable rate of user in such a wireless network, three enhanced-rate iterative beamforming methods are proposed by designing the amplifying factors and the corresponding phases at active IRS. The first method, maximizing the simplified signal-to-noise ratio (Max-SSNR) is designed by omitting the cross-term in the definition of rate. Using the Rayleigh-Ritz (RR) theorem, Max-SSNR-RR is proposed to iteratively optimize the norm of beamforming vector and its associated normalized vector. In addition, generalized maximum ratio reflection (GMRR) is presented with a closed-form expression, which is motivated by the maximum ratio combining. To further improve rate, maximizing SNR (Max-SNR) is designed by fractional programming (FP), which is called Max-SNR-FP. Simulation results show that the proposed three methods make an obvious rate enhancement over Max-reflecting signal-to-noise ratio (Max-RSNR), maximum ratio reflection (MRR), selective ratio reflecting (SRR), equal gain reflection (EGR) and passive IRS, and are in increasing order of rate performance as follows: Max-SSNR-RR, GMRR, and Max-SNR-FP.

Over-the-Air Federated Averaging with Limited Power and Privacy Budgets

To jointly overcome the communication bottleneck and privacy leakage of wireless federated learning (FL), this paper studies a differentially private over-the-air federated averaging (DP-OTA-FedAvg) system with a limited sum power budget. With DP-OTA-FedAvg, the gradients are aligned by an alignment coefficient and aggregated over the air, and channel noise is employed to protect privacy. We aim to improve the learning performance by jointly designing the device scheduling, alignment coefficient, and the number of aggregation rounds of federated averaging (FedAvg) subject to sum power and privacy constraints. We first present the privacy analysis based on differential privacy (DP) to quantify the impact of the alignment coefficient on privacy preservation in each communication round. Furthermore, to study how the device scheduling, alignment coefficient, and the number of the global aggregation affect the learning process, we conduct the convergence analysis of DP-OTA-FedAvg in the cases of convex and non-convex loss functions. Based on these analytical results, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the optimality gap of the DP-OTA-FedAvg subject to limited sum power and privacy budgets. The problem is solved by decoupling it into two sub-problems. Given the number of communication rounds, we conclude the relationship between the number of scheduled devices and the alignment coefficient, which offers a set of potential optimal solution pairs of device scheduling and the alignment coefficient. Thanks to the reduced search space, the optimal solution can be efficiently obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed policy is validated through simulations.

Joint Beamforming and Phase Shift Design for Hybrid-IRS-and-UAV-aided Directional Modulation Network

Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) have been introduced into wireless communication systems to enhance the performance of air-ground transmission. To make a good balance between performance, cost, and power consumption, a hybrid-IRS-and-UAV-assisted directional modulation (DM) network is investigated in this paper, where the hybrid IRS consists of passive and active reflecting elements. To maximize the achievable rate, three optimization algorithms, called maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-fractional programming (FP) (Max-SNR-FP), maximum SNR-equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) (Max-SNR-EAR), and maximum SNR-majorization-minimization (MM) (Max-SNR-MM), are proposed to jointly design the beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM) of hybrid IRS by alternately optimizing one and giving another. The Max-SNR-FP method employs the successive convex approximation and FP methods to derive the beamforming vector and hybrid IRS PSM. The Max-SNR-EAR method adopts the maximum signal-to-leakage-noise ratio method and the criteria of phase alignment and EAR to design them. In addition, the Max-SNR-MM method utilizes the MM criterion to derive the IRS PSM. Simulation results show that the rates harvested by the proposed three methods are slightly lower than those of active IRS with higher power consumption, which are 35 percent higher than those of no IRS and random phase IRS, while passive IRS achieves only about 17 percent rate gain over the latter. Moreover, compared to Max-SNR-FP, the proposed Max-SNR-EAR and Max-SNR-MM methods make an obvious complexity degradation at the price of a slight performance loss.

Beamforming and Phase Shift Design for HR-IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network with a Malicious Attacker

In this paper, we propose to use hybrid relay-intelligent reflecting surface (HR-IRS) to improve the security performance of directional modulation (DM) system. In particular, the eavesdropper in this system works in full-duplex (FD) mode and he will eavesdrop on the confidential message (CM) as well as send malicious jamming. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the receive beamforming, transmit beamforming and phase shift matrix (PSM) of HR-IRS. Since the optimization problem is un-convex and the variables are coupled to each other, we solve this problem by iteratively optimizing these variables. The receive beamforming and transmit beamforming are obtained based on generalized Rayleigh-Ritz theorem and Dinkelbach's Transform respectively. And for PSM, two methods, called separate optimization of PSM (SO-PSM) and joint optimization of PSM (JO-PSM) are proposed. Thus, two iterative algorithms are proposed accordingly, namely maximizing SR based on SO-PSM (Max-SR-SOP) and maximizing SR based on JO-PSM (Max-SR-JOP). The former has better performance and the latter has lower complexity. The simulation results show that when HR-IRS has sufficient power budget, the proposed Max-SR-SOP and Max-SR-JOP can enable HR-IRS-aided DM network to obtain higher SR than passive IRS-aided DM network.

Asynchronous RIS-assisted Localization: A Comprehensive Analysis of Fundamental Limits

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has drawn considerable attention for its ability to enhance the performance of not only the wireless communication but also the indoor localization with low-cost. This paper investigates the performance limits of the RIS-based near-field localization in the asynchronous scenario, and analyzes the impact of each part of the cascaded channel on the localization performance. The Fisher information matrix (FIM) and the position error bound (PEB) are derived. Besides, we also derive the equivalent Fisher information (EFI) for the position-related intermediate parameters. Enabled by the derived EFI, we verify that both the ranging and bearing information of the user can be obtained when the near-field model is considered for the RIS-User equipment (UE) part of the channel, while only the direction of the UE can be inferred in the far-field scenario. This result is well known in the scenario that the curvature of arrival (COA) is directly sensed by the traditional active large-scale array, and we prove that it still holds when the COA is sensed passively by the large RIS. For the base station (BS)-RIS part of the channel, we reveal that this part of the channel determines the type of the gain provided by the BS antenna array. Besides, in the single-carrier, single snapshot case, it requires both the BS-RIS and the RIS-UE part of the channel works in the near-field scenario to localize the UE. We also show that the well-known focusing control scheme for RIS, which maximizes the received SNR, is not always a good choice and may degrade the localization performance in the asynchronous scenario. The simulation results validate the analytic work. The impact of the focusing control scheme on the PEB performances under synchronous and asynchronous conditions is also investigated.

Two-Timescale Design for RIS-aided Cell-free Massive MIMO Systems with Imperfect CSI

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a two-timescale transmission design in cell-free massive multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems incorporating reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) under the assumption of imperfect channel state information (CSI). We examine the Rician channel model and formulate the passive beamforming for the RISs based on statistical channel state information (S-CSI). To that end, we put forth a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator with the aim of estimating the aggregation of channels from the users to the APs within each channel coherence interval. Meanwhile, the active beamforming for the radio units (APs) is executed using the maximum ratio combining (MRC) approach, which utilizes the instantaneous aggregated channels, that result from the combination of the direct and reflected channels from the RISs. Subsequently, we derive the closed-form expressions of the achievable uplink spectral efficiency (SE), which is a function of S-CSI elements such as distance-dependent path loss, Rician factors as well as the number of RIS elements and AP antennas. We then optimize the phase shifts of the RISs to maximize the sum SE of the users, utilizing the soft actor-critic (SAC) which is a deep reinforcement learning (RL) method, and relying on the derived closed-form expressions. Numerical evaluations affirm that, despite the presence of imperfect CSI, the deployment of RIS in cell-free systems can lead to significant performance improvement.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Power Allocation for Minimizing AoI and Energy Consumption in MIMO-NOMA IoT Systems

Multi-input multi-out and non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) internet-of-things (IoT) systems can improve channel capacity and spectrum efficiency distinctly to support the real-time applications. Age of information (AoI) is an important metric for real-time application, but there is no literature have minimized AoI of the MIMO-NOMA IoT system, which motivates us to conduct this work. In MIMO-NOMA IoT system, the base station (BS) determines the sample collection requirements and allocates the transmission power for each IoT device. Each device determines whether to sample data according to the sample collection requirements and adopts the allocated power to transmit the sampled data to the BS over MIMO-NOMA channel. Afterwards, the BS employs successive interference cancelation (SIC) technique to decode the signal of the data transmitted by each device. The sample collection requirements and power allocation would affect AoI and energy consumption of the system. It is critical to determine the optimal policy including sample collection requirements and power allocation to minimize the AoI and energy consumption of MIMO-NOMA IoT system, where the transmission rate is not a constant in the SIC process and the noise is stochastic in the MIMO-NOMA channel. In this paper, we propose the optimal power allocation to minimize the AoI and energy consumption of MIMO- NOMA IoT system based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Extensive simulations are carried out to demonstrate the superiority of the optimal power allocation.

Machine Learning Methods for Inferring the Number of UAV Emitters via Massive MIMO Receive Array

To provide important prior knowledge for the DOA estimation of UAV emitters in future wireless networks, we present a complete DOA preprocessing system for inferring the number of emitters via massive MIMO receive array. Firstly, in order to eliminate the noise signals, two high-precision signal detectors, square root of maximum eigenvalue times minimum eigenvalue (SR-MME) and geometric mean (GM), are proposed. Compared to other detectors, SR-MME and GM can achieve a high detection probability while maintaining extremely low false alarm probability. Secondly, if the existence of emitters is determined by detectors, we need to further confirm their number. Therefore, we perform feature extraction on the the eigenvalue sequence of sample covariance matrix to construct feature vector and innovatively propose a multi-layer neural network (ML-NN). Additionally, the support vector machine (SVM), and naive Bayesian classifier (NBC) are also designed. The simulation results show that the machine learning-based methods can achieve good results in signal classification, especially neural networks, which can always maintain the classification accuracy above 70\% with massive MIMO receive array. Finally, we analyze the classical signal classification methods, Akaike (AIC) and Minimum description length (MDL). It is concluded that the two methods are not suitable for scenarios with massive MIMO arrays, and they also have much worse performance than machine learning-based classifiers.

Asynchronous Federated Learning for Edge-assisted Vehicular Networks

Vehicular networks enable vehicles support real-time vehicular applications through training data. Due to the limited computing capability, vehicles usually transmit data to a road side unit (RSU) at the network edge to process data. However, vehicles are usually reluctant to share data with each other due to the privacy issue. For the traditional federated learning (FL), vehicles train the data locally to obtain a local model and then upload the local model to the RSU to update the global model, thus the data privacy can be protected through sharing model parameters instead of data. The traditional FL updates the global model synchronously, i.e., the RSU needs to wait for all vehicles to upload their models for the global model updating. However, vehicles may usually drive out of the coverage of the RSU before they obtain their local models through training, which reduces the accuracy of the global model. It is necessary to propose an asynchronous federated learning (AFL) to solve this problem, where the RSU updates the global model once it receives a local model from a vehicle. However, the amount of data, computing capability and vehicle mobility may affect the accuracy of the global model. In this paper, we jointly consider the amount of data, computing capability and vehicle mobility to design an AFL scheme to improve the accuracy of the global model. Extensive simulation experiments have demonstrated that our scheme outperforms the FL scheme

Beamforming Design for RIS-Aided AF Relay Networks

Since reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered to be a passive reflector for rate performance enhancement, a RIS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network is presented. By jointly optimizing the beamforming matrix at AF relay and the phase shifts matrices at RIS, two schemes are put forward to address a maximizing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) problem. Firstly, aiming at achieving a high rate, a high-performance alternating optimization (AO) method based on Charnes-Cooper transformation and semidefinite programming (CCT-SDP) is proposed, where the optimization problem is decomposed to three subproblems solved by CCT-SDP and rank-one solutions can be recovered by Gaussian randomization. While the optimization variables in CCT-SDP method are matrices, which leads to extremely high complexity. In order to reduce the complexity, a low-complexity AO scheme based on Dinkelbachs transformation and successive convex approximation (DT-SCA) is put forward, where matrices variables are transformed to vector variables and three decoupled subproblems are solved by DT-SCA. Simulation results verify that compared to two benchmarks (i.e. a RIS-assisted AF relay network with random phase and a AF relay network without RIS), the proposed CCT-SDP and DT-SCA schemes can harvest better rate performance. Furthermore, it is revealed that the rate of the low-complexity DT-SCA method is close to that of CCT-SDP method.

A Framework for Transmission Design for Active RIS-Aided Communication with Partial CSI

Active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have recently been proposed to compensate for the severe multiplicative fading effect of conventional passive RIS-aided systems. Each reflecting element of active RISs is assisted by an amplifier such that the incident signal can be reflected and amplified instead of only being reflected as in passive RIS-aided systems. This work addresses the practical challenge that, on the one hand, in active RIS-aided systems the perfect individual CSI of the RIS-aided channels cannot be acquired due to the lack of signal processing power at the active RISs, but, on the other hand, this CSI is required to calculate the expected system data rate and RIS transmit power needed for transceiver design. To address this issue, we first derive closed-form expressions for the average achievable rate and the average RIS transmit power based on partial CSI of the RIS-aided channels. Then, we formulate an average achievable rate maximization problem for jointly optimizing the active beamforming at both the base station (BS) and the RIS. This problem is then tackled using the majorization--minimization (MM) algorithm framework, and, for each iteration, semi-closed-form solutions for the BS and RIS beamforming are derived based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, we further formulate a rate outage constrained beamforming problem, which is solved using the Bernstein-Type inequality (BTI) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms can efficiently overcome the challenges imposed by imperfect CSI in active RIS-aided wireless systems.

Precoding and Beamforming Design for Intelligent Reconfigurable Surface-Aided Hybrid Secure Spatial Modulation

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is an emerging technology for wireless communication composed of a large number of low-cost passive devices with reconfigurable parameters, which can reflect signals with a certain phase shift and is capable of building programmable communication environment. In this paper, to avoid the high hardware cost and energy consumption in spatial modulation (SM), an IRS-aided hybrid secure SM (SSM) system with a hybrid precoder is proposed. To improve the security performance, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the beamforming at IRS and hybrid precoding at the transmitter. Considering that the SR has no closed form expression, an approximate SR (ASR) expression is derived as the objective function. To improve the SR performance, three IRS beamforming methods, called IRS alternating direction method of multipliers (IRS-ADMM), IRS block coordinate ascend (IRS-BCA) and IRS semi-definite relaxation (IRS-SDR), are proposed. As for the hybrid precoding design, approximated secrecy rate-successive convex approximation (ASR-SCA) method and cut-off rate-gradient ascend (COR-GA) method are proposed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IRS-SDR and IRS-ADMM beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over IRS-BCA. Particularly, the proposed IRS-ADMM and IRS-BCA are of low-complexity at the expense of a little performance loss compared with IRS-SDR. For hybrid precoding, the proposed ASR-SCA performs better than COR-GA in the high transmit power region.

Joint Beamforming and Phase Shift Design for Hybrid-IRS-aided Directional Modulation Network

To make a good balance between performance, cost, and power consumption, a hybrid intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided directional modulation (DM) network is investigated in this paper, where the hybrid IRS consists of passive and active reflecting elements. To maximize the achievable rate, two optimization algorithms, called maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-fractional programming (FP) (Max-SNR-FP) and maximum SNR-equal amplitude reflecting (EAR) (Max-SNR-EAR), are proposed to jointly design the beamforming vector and phase shift matrix (PSM) of hybrid IRS by alternately optimizing one and giving another. The former employs the successive convex approximation and FP methods to derive the beamforming vector and hybrid IRS PSM, while the latter adopts the maximum signal-to-leakage-noise ratio method and the criteria of phase alignment and EAR to design them. Simulation results show that the rates harvested by the proposed two methods are slightly lower than those of active IRS with higher power consumption, which are 35 percent higher than those of no IRS and random phase IRS, while passive IRS achieves only about 17 percent rate gain over the latter. Moreover, compared to Max-SNR-FP, the proposed Max-SNR-EAR method makes an obvious complexity degradation at the price of a slight performance loss.
