Supervised deep learning in high energy phenomenology: a mini review

Deep learning, a branch of machine learning, have been recently applied to high energy experimental and phenomenological studies. In this note we give a brief review on those applications using supervised deep learning. We first describe various learning models and then recapitulate their applications to high energy phenomenological studies. Some detailed applications are delineated in details, including the machine learning scan in the analysis of new physics parameter space, the graph neural networks in the search of top-squark production and in the $CP$ measurement of the top-Higgs coupling at the LHC.

NMSSM with generalized deflected mirage mediation

We propose to generate a realistic soft SUSY breaking spectrum for Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) with a generalized deflected mirage mediation scenario, in which additional Yukawa and gauge mediation contributions are included to deflect the renormalization group equation(RGE) trajectory. Based on the Wilsonian effective action obtained by integrating out the messengers, the NMSSM soft SUSY breaking spectrum can be given analytically at the messenger scale. We find that additional contributions to $m_S^2$ can possibly ameliorate the stringent constraints from the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and 125 GeV Higgs mass. Constraints from dark matter and fine-tuning are also discussed. The Barbieri-Giudice fine-tuning measure and electroweak fine-tuning measure in our scenario can be as low as ${\cal O}(1)$, which possibly indicates that our scenario is natural.

Exploring supersymmetry with machine learning

Investigation of well-motivated parameter space in the theories of Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) plays an important role in new physics discoveries. However, a large-scale exploration of models with multi-parameter or equivalent solutions with a finite separation, such as supersymmetric models, is typically a time-consuming and challenging task. In this paper, we propose a self-exploration method, named Machine Learning Scan (MLS), to achieve an efficient test of models. As a proof-of-concept, we apply MLS to investigate the subspace of MSSM and CMSSM and find that such a method can reduce the computational cost and may be helpful for accelerating the exploration of supersymmetry.

Vacuum stability in stau-neutralino coannihilation in MSSM

The stau-neutralino coannihilation provides a feasible way to accommodate the observed cosmological dark matter (DM) relic density in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In such a coannihilation mechanism the stau mass usually has an upper bound since its annihilation rate becomes small with the increase of DM mass. Inspired by this observation, we examine the upper limit of stau mass in the parameter space with a large mixing of staus. We find that the stau pair may dominantly annihilate into dibosons and hence the upper bound on the stau mass ($\sim400$ GeV) obtained from the $f\bar{f}$ final states can be relaxed. Imposing the DM relic density constraint and requiring a long lifetime of the present vacuum, we find that the lighter stau mass can be as heavy as about 1.4 TeV for the stau maximum mixing. However, if requiring the present vacuum to survive during the thermal history of the universe, this mass limit will reduce to about 0.9 TeV. We also discuss the complementarity of vacuum stability and direct detections in probing this stau coannihilation scenario.

Unveiling CP property of top-Higgs coupling with graph neural networks at the LHC

The top-Higgs coupling plays an important role in particle physics and cosmology. The precision measurements of this coupling can provide an insight to new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we propose to use Message Passing Neural Network (MPNN) to reveal the CP nature of top-Higgs interaction through semi-leptonic channel $pp \to t(\to b\ell^-ν_\ell)\bar{t}(\to \bar{b}jj)h(\to b\bar{b})$. Using the test statistics constructed from the event classification probabilities given by the MPNN, we find that the pure CP-even and CP-odd components can be well distinguished at the LHC, with at most 300 fb$^{-1}$ experimental data.

Revisiting lepton-specific 2HDM in light of muon g-2 anomaly

We examine the lepton-specific 2HDM as a solution of muon $g-2$ anomaly under various theoretical and experimental constraints, especially the direct search limits from the LHC and the requirement of a strong first-order phase transition in the early universe. We find that the muon g-2 anomaly can be explained in the region of 32 $<\tanβ<$ 80, 10 GeV $<m_A<$ 65 GeV, 260 GeV $<m_H<$ 620 GeV and 180 GeV $<m_{H^\pm}<$ 620 GeV after imposing the joint constraints from the theory, the precision electroweak data, the 125 GeV Higgs data, the leptonic/semi-hadronic $τ$ decays, the leptonic $Z$ decays and Br$(B_s \to μ^+ μ^-)$. The direct searches from the $h\to AA$ channels can impose stringent upper limits on Br$(h\to AA)$ and the multi-lepton event searches can sizably reduce the allowed region of $m_A$ and $\tanβ$ (10 GeV $<m_A<$ 44 GeV and 32 $<\tanβ<$ 60). Finally, we find that the model can produce a strong first-order phase transition in the region of 14 GeV $<m_A<$ 25 GeV, 310 GeV $<m_H<$ 355 GeV and 250 GeV $<m_{H^\pm}<$ 295 GeV, allowed by the explanation of the muon $g-2$ anomaly.

Solving the muon g-2 anomaly in CMSSM extension with non-universal gaugino masses

We propose to generate non-universal gaugino masses in SU(5) GUT with the generalized Planck-scale mediation SUSY breaking mechanism, in which the non-universality arises from proper wavefunction normalization with lowest component VEVs of various high dimensional representations of the Higgs fields of SU(5) and an unique F-term VEV by the singlet. Different predictions on gaugino mass ratios with respect to widely studied scenarios are given. The gluino-SUGRA-like scenario, where gluinos are much heavier than winos, bino and universal scalar masses, can be easily realized with appropriate combinations of such high-representation Higgs fields. With 6 GUT-scale parameters in our scenario, we can solve elegantly the tension between mSUGRA and the present experimental results, including the muon g-2, the dark matter (DM) relic density and the direct sparticle search bounds from the LHC. Taking into account the current constraints in our numerical scan, we have the following observations: (i) The large-$\tanβ$ samples with a moderate $M_3$ a small $|A_0/M_3|$ and a small $m_A$ are favored to generate a 125 GeV SM-like Higgs and predict a large muon g-2, while the stop mass and μparameter, mainly determined by $|M_3|(\gg M_0,|M_1|,|M_2|)$, can be about 6 TeV; (ii) The moderate-$\tanβ$(35~40) samples with a negative $M_3$ can have a light smuon but a heavy stau, which predict a large muon g-2 but a small $Br(B_s\toμ^+μ^-)$; (iii) To obtain the right DM relic density, the annihilation mechanisms should be stau exchange, stau coannihilation, chargino coannihilation, slepton annihilation and the combination of two or three of them; (iv) To obtain the right DM relic density, the spin-independent DM-nucleon cross section is typically much smaller than the present limits of XENON1T 2018 and also an order of magnitude lower than the future detection sensitivity of LZ and XENONnT.

New physics implication of Higgs precision measurements

Studying the properties of the Higgs boson can be an important window to explore the physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In this work, we present studies on the implications of the Higgs precision measurements at future Higgs Factories. We perform a global fit to various Higgs search channels to obtain the 95 % C.L. constraints on the model parameter spaces of Two Higgs Double Model (2HDM) and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In the 2HDM, we analyze tree level effects as well as one-loop contributions from the heavy Higgs bosons. The strong constraints on $\cos(β-α)$, heavy Higgs masses and their mass splitting are complementary to direct search of the LHC as well as possible future Z pole precision measurements. For the MSSM, we study both the Higgs couplings and mass precisions. The constraints on the CP-odd Higgs mass $m_A$ and stop mass scale $m_{SUSY}$ can be complementary to the direct search of HL-LHC. We also compare the sensitivity of various future Higgs factories, namely Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), Future Circular Collider (FCC)-ee and International Linear Collider (ILC).

A minimal $U(1)^\prime$ extension of MSSM in light of the B decay anomaly

Motivated by the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ anomalies from B decays, we extend the minimal supersymmetric model with a non-universal anomaly-free $U(1)^\prime$ gauge symmetry, coupling non-universally to the lepton sector as well as the quark sector. In particular, only the third generation quarks are charged under this $U(1)^\prime$, which can easily evade the dilepton bound from the LHC searches. An extra singlet is introduced to break this $U(1)^\prime$ symmetry allowing for the $μ$-term to be generated dynamically. The relevant constraints of $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ mixing, $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing and the LHC dilepton searches are considered. We find that in the allowed parameter space this $U(1)^\prime$ gauge interaction can accommodate the $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ anomalies and weaken considerably the $Z^\prime$ mass limits while remaining perturbative up to the Planck scale.

Probing bino-wino coannihilation dark matter under the neutrino floor at the LHC

In the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) the bino-wino coannihilation provides a feasible way to accommodate the observed cosmological dark matter (DM) relic density. However, such a scenario usually predicts a very small DM-nucleon scattering cross section that is below the neutrino floor, and can not be tested by DM direct detection experiments. In this work, we investigate the discovery potential of this bino-wino co-annihilation region by searching for the soft dilepton events from the process $pp \to χ^0_2 (\to \ell^+\ell^- χ^0_1) χ^\pm_1+jets$ at the LHC. We find that the mass of the wino-like $χ^0_2$ can be probed up to about 310 (230) GeV at $2σ$ ($5σ$) level for an integrated luminosity ${\cal L}=300$ fb$^{-1}$. In the future HL-LHC with 3000 fb$^{-1}$ luminosity, the corresponding mass limits can be pushed up to 430 (330) GeV.

Leptophilic dark matter in gauged $U(1)_{L_e-L_μ}$ model in light of DAMPE cosmic ray $e^+ + e^-$ excess

Motivated by the very recent cosmic-ray electron+positron excess observed by DAMPE collaboration, we investigate a Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) in the gauged $L_e - L_μ$ model. DM interacts with the electron and muon via the $U(1)_{e-μ}$ gauge boson $Z^{'}$. The model can explain the DAMPE data well. Although a non-zero DM-nucleon cross section is only generated at one loop level and there is a partial cancellation between $Z^{'}ee$ and $Z^{'}μμ$ couplings, we find that a large portion of $Z^{'}$ mass is ruled out from direct DM detection limit leaving the allowed $Z^{'}$ mass to be close to two times of the DM mass. Implications for $pp \to Z^{'} \to 2\ell$ and $pp \to 2\ell + Z^{'}$ , and muon $g-2$ anomaly are also studied.

Simplified TeV leptophilic dark matter in light of DAMPE data

Using a simplified framework, we attempt to explain the recent DAMPE cosmic $e^+ + e^-$ flux excess by leptophilic Dirac fermion dark matter (LDM). The scalar ($Φ_0$) and vector ($Φ_1$) mediator fields connecting LDM and Standard Model particles are discussed. Under constraints of DM relic density, gamma-rays, cosmic-rays and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), we find that the couplings $P \otimes S$, $P \otimes P$, $V \otimes A$ and $V \otimes V$ can produce the right bump in $e^+ + e^-$ flux for a DM mass around 1.5 TeV with a natural thermal annihilation cross-section $<σv> \sim 3 \times 10^{-26} cm^3/s$ today. Among them, $V \otimes V$ coupling is tightly constrained by PandaX-II data (although LDM-nucleus scattering appears at one-loop level) and the surviving samples appear in the resonant region, $m_{Φ_1} \simeq 2m_χ$. We also study the related collider signatures, such as dilepton production $pp \to Φ_1 \to \ell^+\ell^-$, and muon $g-2$ anomaly. Finally, we present a possible $U(1)_X$ realization for such leptophilic dark matter.

Explain DAMPE Results by Dark Matter With Hierarchical Lepton-Specific Yukawa Interactions

We propose to interpret the DAMPE electron excess at 1.5 TeV through scalar or Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) annihilation with doubly charged scalar mediators that have lepton-specific Yukawa couplings. Hierarchy of such lepton-specific Yukawa couplings is generated through the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, so that the dark matter annihilation products can be dominantly electrons. Stringent constraints from LEP2 on intermediate vector boson production can be evaded in our scenarios. In the case of scalar DM, we discuss one scenario with DM annihilating directly to leptons and the other scenario with DM annihilating to scalar mediators followed by their decays. We also discuss the Breit-Wigner resonant enhancement and the Sommerfeld enhancement in case that the s-wave annihilation process is small or helicity suppressed. With both types of enhancement, constraints on the parameters can be relaxed and new ways for model building will be open in explaining the DAMPE results.

Probing GeV-scale MSSM neutralino dark matter in collider and direct detection experiments

Given the recent constraints from the dark matter (DM) direct detections, we examine a light GeV-scale (2-30 GeV) neutralino DM in the alignment limit of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In this limit without decoupling, the heavy CP-even scalar $H$ plays the role of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson while the other scalar $h$ can be rather light so that the DM can annihilate through the $h$ resonance or into a pair of $h$ to achieve the observed relic density. With the current collider and cosmological constraints, we find that such a light neutralino DM above 6 GeV can be excluded by the XENON-1T (2017) limits while the survivied parameter space below 6 GeV can be fully covered by the future germanium-based light dark matter detections (such as CDEX), by the Higgs coupling precison measurements or by the production process $e^+e^- \to hA$ at an electron-positron collider (Higgs factory).

Status and prospects of light bino-higgsino dark matter in natural SUSY

Given the recent progress in dark matter direction detection experiments, we examine a light bino-higgsino dark matter (DM) scenario ($M_1<100$ GeV and $μ<300$ GeV) in natural supersymmetry with the electroweak fine tuning measure $Δ_{EW}<30$. By imposing various constraints, we note that: (i) For $sign(μ/M_1)=+1$, the parameter space allowed by the DM relic density and collider bounds can almost be excluded by the very recent spin-independent (SI) scattering cross section limits from the XENON1T (2017) experiment. (ii) For $sign(μ/M_1)=-1$, the SI limits can be evaded due to the cancelation effects in the $h\tildeχ^0_1\tildeχ^0_1$ coupling, while rather stringent constraints come from the PandaX-II (2016) spin-dependent (SD) scattering cross section limits, which can exclude the higgsino mass $|μ|$ and the LSP mass $m_{\tildeχ^0_1}$ up to about 230 GeV and 37 GeV, respectively. Furthermore, the surviving parameter space will be fully covered by the projected XENON1T experiment or the future trilepton searches at the HL-LHC.

Probing degenerate heavy Higgs bosons in NMSSM with vector-like particles

In this work, we investigate the degenerate heavy Higgs bosons in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) by introducing vector-like particles. Such an extension is well motivated from the top-down view since some grand unified theories usually predict the existence of singlet scalars and vector-like particles at weak scale. Under the constraints from the LHC and dark matter experiments, we find that (1) the null results of searching for high mass resonances have tightly constrained the parameter space; (2) two degenerate heavy singlet Higgs bosons $h_2$ and $a_1$ can sizably decay to $χ^0_1χ^0_1$ invisibly. Therefore, search for the monojet events through the process $gg \to h_2 / a_1 (\to χ^0_1 χ^0_1) j$ may further test our scenario at the future LHC.

Solving the muon g-2 anomaly in deflected AMSB with messenger-matter interactions

We proposed to introduce general messenger-matter interactions in the deflected anomaly mediated SUSY breaking scenario to explain the $g_μ-2$ anomaly. Scenarios with complete or incomplete GUT multiplet messengers are discussed, respectively. The introduction of incomplete GUT mulitiplets can be advantageous in various aspects. We found that the $g_μ-2$ anomaly can be solved in both scenarios under current constraints including the gluino mass bounds, while the scenarios with incomplete GUT representation messengers are more favored by the $g_μ-2$ data. We also found that the gluino is upper bounded by about 2.5 TeV (2.0 TeV) in Scenario A and 3.0 TeV (2.7 TeV) in Scenario B if the generalized deflected AMSB scenarios are used to fully account for the $g_μ-2$ anomaly at $3σ$ ($2σ$) level. Such a gluino should be accessible in the future LHC searches. Dark matter constraints, including DM relic density and direct detection bounds, favor the scenario B with incomplete GUT multiplets. Much of the allowed parameter space for the scenario B could be covered by the future DM direct detection experiments.

Status of CMSSM in light of current LHC Run-2 and LUX data

Motivated by the latest results of the LHC Run-2 and LUX experiments, we examine the status of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) by performing a global fit. We construct a likelihood function including the electroweak precision observables, $B$-physics measurements, LHC Run-1 and -2 data of SUSY direct searches, Planck observation of the dark matter relic density and the combined LUX Run-3 and -4 detection limits. Based on the profile likelihood functions of 1 billion samples, we obtain the following observations: (i) The stau coannihilation region has been mostly excluded by the latest LHC Run-2 data; (ii) The focus point region has been largely covered by the LUX-2016 limits while the $A$-funnel region has been severely restricted by flavor observables like $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$. The remaining parts of both regions will be totally covered by the future LZ dark matter experiment; (iii) The masses of the stop, the lightest neutralino and the gluino have been pushed up to 1033 GeV, 449 GeV and 2285 GeV, respectively.
