On representation varieties of 3-manifold groups

We prove universality theorems ("Murphy's Laws") for representation schemes of fundamental groups of closed 3-dimensional manifolds. We show that germs of SL(2,C)-representation schemes of such groups are essentially the same as germs of schemes of over rational numbers.

The Relative Lie Algebra Cohomology of the Weil Representation of SO(n,1)

In Part 1 of this paper we construct a spectral sequence converging to the relative Lie algebra cohomology associated to the action of any subgroup $G$ of the symplectic group on the polynomial Fock model of the Weil representation, see Section 7. These relative Lie algebra cohomology groups are of interest because they map to the cohomology of suitable arithmetic quotients of the symmetric space $G/K$ of $G$. We apply this spectral sequence to the case $G = \mathrm{SO}_0(n,1)$ in Sections 8, 9, and 10 to compute the relative Lie algebra cohomology groups $H^{\bullet} \big(\mathfrak{so}(n,1), \mathrm{SO}(n); \mathcal{P}(V^k) \big)$. Here $V = \mathbb{R}^{n,1}$ is Minkowski space and $\mathcal{P}(V^k)$ is the subspace of $L^2(V^k)$ consisting of all products of polynomials with the Gaussian. In Part 2 of this paper we compute the cohomology groups $H^{\bullet}\big(\mathfrak{so}(n,1), \mathrm{SO}(n); L^2(V^k) \big)$ using spectral theory and representation theory. In Part 3 of this paper we compute the maps between the polynomial Fock and $L^2$ cohomology groups induced by the inclusions $\mathcal{P}(V^k) \subset L^2(V^k)$.

Ideal triangles in Euclidean buildings and branching to Levi subgroups

We introduce the notion of ideal triangle in the Bruhat-Tits building associated to a split group -- it is analogous to the usual notion of triangle, but one vertex is "at infinity" in a certain direction. We prove that the algebraic variety of based ideal triangles with prescribed side-lengths is naturally isomorphic to a suitable variety of genuine triangles. From theorems pertaining to genuine triangles, we deduce saturation theorems related to branching to Levi subgroups and to the constant term homomorphisms.

A path model for geodesics in Euclidean buildings and its applications to representation theory

In this paper we give a combinatorial characterization of projections of geodesics in Euclidean buildings to Weyl chambers. We apply these results to the representation theory of complex semisimple Lie groups and to spherical Hecke rings associated with nonarchimedean reductive Lie groups. Our main application is a generalization of the saturation theorem of Knutson and Tao for SL(n) to other complex semisimple Lie groups.

Saturation and Irredundancy for Spin(8)

We explicitly calculate the triangle inequalities for the group PSO(8). Therefore we explicitly solve the eigenvalues of sum problem for this group (equivalently describing the side-lengths of geodesic triangles in the corresponding symmetric space for the Weyl chamber-valued metric). We then apply some computer programs to verify two basic questions/conjectures. First, we verify that the above system of inequalities is irredundant. Then, we verify the ``saturation conjecture'' for the decomposition of tensor products of finite-dimensional irreducible representations of Spin(8). Namely, we show that for any triple of dominant weights a, b, c such that a+b+c is in the root lattice, and any positive integer N, the tensor product of the irreducible representations V(a) and V(b) contains V(c) if and only if the tensor product of V(Na) and V(Nb) contains V(Nc).

Convex functions on symmetric spaces, side lengths of polygons and stability inequalities for weighted configurations at infinity

In a symmetric space of noncompact type X = G/K oriented geodesic segments correspond to points in the Euclidean Weyl chamber. We can hence assign vector-valued side-lengths to segments. Our main result is a system of homogeneous linear inequalities describing the restrictions on the side -lengths of closed polygons. The inequalities are based on the mod 2 Schubert calculus in the real Grassmannians G/P for maximal parabolic subgroups P.

Polygons in buildings and their refined side lengths

As in a symmetric space of noncompact type, one can associate to an oriented geodesic segment in a Euclidean building a vector valued length in the Euclidean Weyl chamber; in addition to the metric length it contains information on the direction of the segment. We study in this paper restrictions on the vector valued side lengths of polygons in (thick) Euclidean buildings. The main result is that the set of possible side lengths of n-gons depends only on the associated spherical Coxeter complex. We show moreover that it coincides with the space of vector valued weights of semistable weighted configurations on the Tits boundary. The side lengths of polygons in symmetric spaces of noncompact type are studied in the related paper [KLM1]. Applications of the geometric results in both papers to algebraic group theory are given in [KLM3].

Structure of the tensor product semigroup

We study structure of the semigroup Tens(G) consisting of triples of dominant weights (λ,μ,ν) of a complex reductive Lie group G such that the triple tensor product of the corresponding irreducible representations of G has a nonzero G-invariant vector. We prove two general structural results for Tens(G) and give an explicit computation of Tens(G) for G=Sp(4,C) and G=G_2.

The generalized triangle inequalities in symmetric spaces and buildings with applications to algebra

In this paper we apply our results on the geometry of polygons in Cartan subspaces, symmetric spaces and buildings to four problems in algebraic group theory. Two of these problems are generalizations of the problems of finding the constraints on the eigenvalues (resp. singular values) of a sum (resp. product) when the eigenvalues (singular values) of each summand (factor) are fixed. The other two problems are related to the computation of the structure constants of the Hecke and representation rings associated with a split reductive algebraic group over Q and its complex Langlands' dual. We give a new proof of the ``Saturation Conjecture'' for GL(m) as a consequence of our solution of the corresponding ``saturation problem'' for the Hecke structure constants for all split reductive algebraic groups over Q.

The Chevalley Involution and a Duality of Weight Varieties

We study the action of the Chevalley involution of a simple complex Lie group G on the set of its weight varieties (i.e. torus quotients of its flag manifolds). We find for torus quotients of Grassmannians (for GL(n)) that we obtain the classical notion of "association of projective point sets" (see Ch. III of Dolgachev-Ortland, Asterisque 165). We say a weight variety is "self-dual" if it is carried into itself by the action of the Chevalley involution. Our main theorem is a classification of those self-dual weight varieties for which the induced self-map is the identity. This problem is the "classical problem" associated to the "quantum problem" of classifying the self-dual representations V of G for which the induced action of the Chevalley involution on the zero weight space V[0] is a scalar. This latter problem is important in the study of the representation of the Artin group associated to G on V[0] obtained as the monodromy representation of the Casimir connection - see Millson - Toledano Laredo arXiv:math.QA/0305062.

The cohomology with local coefficients of compact hyperbolic manifolds - long version

We extend the techniques developed by Millson and Raghunathan to prove nonvanishing results for the cohomology of compact arithmetic quotients of hyperbolic n-space with values in the local coefficient systems associated to finite dimensional irreducible representations of the group SO(n,1). We prove that all possible nonvanishing results compatible with the vanishing theorems of Vogan and Zuckerman can be realized by any sufficiently deep congruence subgroup of the standard cocompact arithmetic examples.

The symplectic geometry of polygons in hyperbolic 3-space

We study the symplectic geometry of the moduli space of closed n-gons with fixed side-lengths in hyperbolic 3-space. We prove that these moduli spaces have a symplectic structure coming from Poisson Lie theory. We construct completely integrable systems on these moduli spaces by bending n-gons along their diagonals. The results of this paper are the analogues of the results of the first two authors for n-gon linkages in Euclidean 3-space in JDG 44. We conclude by proving by a deformation argument that the moduli spaces of n-gon linkages in hyperbolic 3-space and Euclidean 3-space with the same set of side-lengths are symplectomorphic.

Universality theorems for configuration spaces of planar linkages

We prove realizability theorems for vector-valued polynomial mappings, real-algebraic sets and compact smooth manifolds by moduli spaces of planar linkages. We also establish a relation between universality theorems for moduli spaces of mechanical linkages and projective arrangements.
