Using local GND density to study SCC initiation

In this work, strain and geometric necessary dislocations (GNDs) have been mapped with nm-resolution around grain boundaries affected by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) or intergranular oxidation with the aim of clarifying which local conditions trigger SCC initiation.

Grain Boundary Serration in Nickel Alloy Inconel 600: Quantification and Mechanisms

The serration of grain boundaries in Inconel 600 caused by heat treatment is studied systematically. A new method based on Fourier transforms is used to analyse the multiple wave-like character of the serrated grain boundaries. A new metric -- the serration index -- is devised and utilised to quantify the degree of serration and more generally to distinguish objectively between serrated and non-serrated boundaries. By considering the variation of the serration index with processing parameters, a causal relationship between degree of serration and solution treatment/cooling rate is elucidated. Processing maps for the degree of serration are presented. Two distinct formation mechanisms arise which rely upon grain boundary interaction with carbides: (i) Zener-type dragging which hinders grain boundary migration and (ii) a faceted carbide growth-induced serration.

Surface terraces in pure tungsten formed by high-temperature oxidation

We observe large-scale surface terraces in tungsten oxidised at high temperature and in high vacuum. Their formation is highly dependent on crystal orientation, with only {111} grains showing prominent terraces. Terrace facets are aligned with {100} crystallographic planes, leading to an increase in total surface energy, making a diffusion-driven formation mechanism unlikely. Instead we hypothesize that preferential oxidation of {100} crystal planes controls terrace formation. Grain height profiles after oxidation and the morphology of samples heat treated with limited oxygen supply are consistent with this hypothesis. Our observations have important implications for the use of tungsten in extreme environments.

Forescattered electron imaging of nanoparticles in a scanning electron microscopy

In this study, we have used a Zr-Nb alloy containing well-defined nano-precipitates as a model material in which to study imaging contrast inversions (atomic number or diffraction contrast) observed with the forescattered electron imaging system, ARGUSTM, in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) when imaging a thin foil in a transmission geometry. The study is based on Monte Carlo simulations and analysis of micrographs experimentally acquired under different imaging conditions. Based on the results, imaging conditions that enhance atomic number or diffraction contrast have been proposed. Data acquired from the ARGUSTM imaging system in SEM has also been compared with results from standard transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging of the same material. These results demonstrate the capability of the ARGUSTM system to investigate microstructures in nano-scale materials.

On the depth resolution of transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) analysis

In this paper, we have analysed the depth resolution that can be achieved by on-axis transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD) using a Zr-Nb alloy. The results indicate that the signals contributing to detectable Kikuchi bands originate from a depth of approximately the mean free path of thermal diffuse scattering (lambdaTDS) from the bottom surface of a thin foil sample. This existing surface sensitivity can thus lead to the observation of different grain structures when opposite sides of a nano-crystalline foil are facing the incident electron beam. These results also provide a guideline for the ideal sample thickness for TKD analysis of 6lambdaTDS, or 21 times the elastic scattering mean free path (lambdaMFP) for samples of high crystal symmetry. For samples of lower symmetry, a smaller thickness 3lambdaTDS, or 10lambdaMFP is suggested.

Mapping the full lattice strain tensor of a single dislocation by High Angular Resolution Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction (HR-TKD)

The full lattice strain tensor and lattice rotations induced by a dislocation in pure tungsten were mapped using high-resolution transmission Kikuchi diffraction (HR-TKD) in a SEM. The HR-TKD measurement agrees very well with a forward calculation using an elastically isotropic model of the dislocation and its Burgers vector. Our results demonstrate that the spatial and angular resolution of HR-TKD in SEM is sufficiently high to resolve the details of lattice distortions near individual dislocations. This capability opens a number of new interesting opportunities, for example determining the Burgers vector of an unknown dislocation in a fast and straightforward way.

A two-dimensional position-sensitive microchannel plate detector realized with two independent one-dimensional resistive anodes

A two-dimensional position-sensitive microchannel plate detector, with a Ø100 mm sensitive area and equipped with four integrated amplifiers, is realized with a new anode scheme. The anode is constructed by two independent one-dimensional resistive anodes, each consisting of an array of parallel copper strips connected by resistors in series on a printed circuit board. The arrays are perpendicularly aligned to realize two-dimensional position resolution, with the intervals between the adjacent strips on the PCB nearer to the MCP cut out to allow electrons passing through. The detector is tested with an 55Fe x-ray source, and a position resolution of 0.38 mm is achieved.

Production and decay of K-shell hollow krypton in collisions with 52 - 197 MeV/u bare xenon ions

X-ray spectra of K-shell hollow krypton atoms produced in single collisions with 52 - 197 MeV/u Xe54+ ions are measured in a heavy-ion storage ring equipped with an internal gas-jet target. Energy shifts of the Kα_1,2^s, Kα_1,2^(h,s), and K\b{eta}_1,3^s transitions are obtained. Thus, the average number of the spectator L-vacancies presented during the x-ray emission is deduced. From the relative intensities of the Kα_1,2^s and Kα_1,2^(h,s) transitions, the ratio of K-shell hollow krypton to singly K-shell ionized atoms is determined to be 14 - 24%. In the considered collisions, the K-vacancies are mainly created by the direct ionization which cannot be calculated within the perturbation descriptions. The experimental results are compared with a relativistic coupled channel calculation performed within the independent particle approximation.

A 128-channel picoammeter system and its application on charged particle beam current distribution measurements

A 128-channel picoammeter system is constructed based on instrumentation amplifiers. Taking the advantages of high electric potential and narrow bandwidth in DC energetic charged beam measurements, current resolution better than 5 fA can be achieved. Two 128-channel Faraday cup arrays are built, and are employed for ion and electron beam current distribution measurements. Tests with 60 keV O3+ ions and 2 keV electrons show that it can provide exact boundaries when a positive charged particle beam current distribution is measured.

A real-time beam current density meter

We have developed a real-time beam current density meter for charged particle beams. It measures the mean current density by collimating a uniform and large diameter primary beam. The suppression of the secondary electrons and the deflection of the beam were simulated, and it was tested with a 105 keV Ar7+ ion beam.
