Evidence for A Two-dimensional Quantum Wigner Solid in Zero Magnetic Field

We report the first experimental observation of a characteristic nonlinear threshold behavior from dc dynamical response as an evidence for a Wigner crystallization in high-purity GaAs 2D hole systems in zero magnetic field. The system under increasing current drive exhibits voltage oscillations with negative differential resistance. They confirm the coexistence of a moving crystal along with striped edge states as observed for electrons on helium surfaces. However, the threshold is well below the typical classical levels due to a different pinning and depinning mechanism that is possibly related to a quantum process.

Anisotropic Fermi Contour of (001) GaAs Electrons in Parallel Magnetic Fields

We demonstrate a severe Fermi contour anisotropy induced by the application of a parallel magnetic field to high-mobility electrons confined to a 30-nm-wide (001) GaAs quantum well. We study commensurability oscillations, namely geometrical resonances of the electron orbits with a unidirectional, surface-strain-induced, periodic potential modulation, to directly probe the size of the Fermi contours along and perpendicular to the parallel field. Their areas are obtained from the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Our experimental data agree semi-quantitatively with the results of parameter-free calculations of the Fermi contours but there are significant discrepancies.

Fermi Contour Anisotropy of GaAs Electron-Flux Composite Fermions in Parallel Magnetic Fields

In high-quality two-dimensional electrons confined to GaAs quantum wells, near Landau level filling factors $ν=$ 1/2 and 1/4, we observe signatures of the commensurability of the electron-flux composite fermion cyclotron orbits with a unidirectional periodic density modulation. Focusing on the data near $ν=1/2$, we directly and quantitatively probe the shape of the composite fermions' cyclotron orbit, and therefore their Fermi contour, as a function of magnetic field ($B_{||}$) applied parallel to the sample plane. The composite fermion Fermi contour becomes severely distorted with increasing $B_{||}$ and appears to be elliptical, in sharp contrast to the electron Fermi contour which splits as the system becomes bilayer-like at high $B_{||}$. We present a simple, qualitative model to interpret our findings.

Large Enhancement of the Photoluminescence Emission of Photoexcited Undoped GaAs Quantum Wells Induced by an Intense Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulse

Intense terahetz (THz) pulses induce a photoluminescence (PL) flash from undoped high-quality GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells under continuous wave laser excitation. The number of excitons increases 10000-fold from that of the steady state under only laser excitation. The THz electric field dependence and the relaxation dynamics of the PL flash intensity suggest that the strong electric field of the THz pulse ionizes impurity states during the one-picosecond period of the THz pulse and release carriers from a giant reservoir containing impurity states in the AlGaAs layers.

Evidence for Helical Nuclear Spin Order in GaAs Quantum Wires

We present transport measurements of cleaved edge overgrowth GaAs quantum wires. The conductance of the first mode reaches 2 e^2/h at high temperatures T > 10 K, as expected. As T is lowered, the conductance is gradually reduced to 1 e^2/h, becoming T-independent at T < 0.1 K, while the device cools far below 0.1 K. This behavior is seen in several wires, is independent of density, and not altered by moderate magnetic fields B. The conductance reduction by a factor of two suggests lifting of the electron spin degeneracy in absence of B. Our results are consistent with theoretical predictions for helical nuclear magnetism in the Luttinger liquid regime.

Characteristic Sign Change of the Magnetoresistance of Strongly Correlated GaAs Two-dimensional Holes

High quality strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) electron systems at low temperatures $T\rightarrow 0$ exhibits an apparent metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) at a large $r_s$ value around 40. We have measured the magnetoresistance of 2D holes in weak perpendicular magnetic field in the vicinity of the transition for a series of carrier densities ranging from $0.2-1.5\times10^{10}$ $cm^{-2}$. The sign of the magnetoresistance is found to be charge density dependent: in the direction of decreasing density, the sign changes from being positive to negative across a characteristic value that coincides with the critical density of MIT.

Light-induced long-ranged disorder effect in ultra-dilute two-dimensional holes in GaAs heterojunction-insulated-gate field-effect-transistors

Comparing the results of transport measurements of strongly correlated two-dimensional holes in a GaAs heterojunction-insulated-gate field-effect-transistor obtained before and after a brief photo-illumination, the light-induced disorder is found to cause qualitative changes suggesting altered carrier states. For charge concentrations ranging from $3\times10^{10}$ $cm^{-2}$ down to $7\times10^{8}$ cm$^{-2}$, the post-illumination hole mobility exhibits a severe suppression for charge densities below $2\times10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$, while almost no change for densities above. The long-ranged nature of the disorder is identified. The temperature dependence of the conductivity is also drastically modified by the disorder reconfiguration from being nonactivated to activated.

Composite Fermions with Tunable Fermi Contour Anisotropy

The composite fermion formalism elegantly describes some of the most fascinating behaviours of interacting two-dimensional carriers at low temperatures and in strong perpendicular magnetic fields. In this framework, carriers minimize their energy by attaching two flux quanta and forming new quasi-particles, the so-called composite fermions. Thanks to the flux attachment, when a Landau level is half-filled, the composite fermions feel a vanishing effective magnetic field and possess a Fermi surface with a well-defined Fermi contour. Our measurements in a high-quality two-dimensional hole system confined to a GaAs quantum well demonstrate that a parallel magnetic field can significantly distort the hole-flux composite fermion Fermi contour.

Evidence for effective mass reduction in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells

We have performed microwave photoresistance measurements in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells and investigated the value of the effective mass. Surprisingly, the effective mass, obtained from the period of microwave-induced resistance oscillations, is found to be about 12% lower than the band mass in GaAs, $\mb$. This finding provides strong evidence for electron-electron interactions which can be probed by microwave photoresistance in very high Landau levels. In contrast, the measured magnetoplasmon dispersion revealed an effective mass which is close to $\mb$, in accord with previous studies.

Evidence for a $ν=5/2$ Fractional Quantum Hall Nematic State in Parallel Magnetic Fields

We report magneto-transport measurements for the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $ν=$ 5/2 as a function of applied parallel magnetic field ($B_{||}$). As $B_{||}$ is increased, the 5/2 state becomes increasingly anisotropic, with the in-plane resistance along the direction of $B_{||}$ becoming more than 30 times larger than in the perpendicular direction. Remarkably, the resistance anisotropy ratio remains constant over a relatively large temperature range, yielding an energy gap which is the same for both directions. Our data are qualitatively consistent with a fractional quantum Hall \textit{nematic} phase.

Magnetic field-tuned Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and evidence for non-Abelian anyons at v=5/2

We show that the resistance of the v=5/2 quantum Hall state, confined to an interferometer, oscillates with magnetic field consistent with an Ising-type non-Abelian state. In three quantum Hall interferometers of different sizes, resistance oscillations at v=7/3 and integer filling factors have the magnetic field period expected if the number of quasiparticles contained within the interferometer changes so as to keep the area and the total charge within the interferometer constant. Under these conditions, an Abelian state such as the (3,3,1) state would show oscillations with the same period as at an integer quantum Hall state. However, in an Ising-type non-Abelian state there would be a rapid oscillation associated with the "even-odd effect" and a slower one associated with the accumulated Abelian phase due to both the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Abelian part of the quasiparticle braiding statistics. Our measurements at v=5/2 are consistent with the latter.

Aharonov-Bohm effect and coherence length of charge e/4 quasiparticles at 5/2 filling factor measured in multiple small Fabry-Perot interferometers

Design of a Fabry-Perot (double point contact) interferometer to measure fractional quantum Hall effect quasiparticle charge properties, and in particular the 5/2 excitations, poses an important trade-off: the device size should be minimized to allow two path interference, since the coherence length of the quasiparticles in the correlated states are expected be limited, yet a small device promotes the dominance of Coulomb charging effects which would overwhelm the Aharonov-Bohm interference effect. In this study a series of small but different size interferometers from the same high density heterostructure wafer are examined for the presence of Coulomb effects versus Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) interference effect when operated in gate configurations that support the 5/2, 7/3, and 8/3 fractional quantum Hall effects. The device sizes vary by more than a factor of three, and over this range explicitly show specific properties of A-B interference, but not Coulomb dominated effects. Given these A-B interference results, the coherence length of the charge e/4 interference is extracted. The coherence length of non-Abelian e/4 quasiparticles is an important parameter for design and development of complex interference devices used to study and apply this exotic excitation. As in prior observations of e/4 excitations, A-B e/4 and e/2 oscillations in alternation are observed in these multiple devices. The amplitudes of the e/4 oscillations are observed to be dramatically reduced for larger area interferometers. Path-length limits are derived from interferometer areas determined directly by A-B measurements, and the attenuation lengths of the e/4 oscillations are shown to be micron to sub-micron scale. This coherence length is consistent with that of the 7/3 excitations measured here, and consistent with theoretical models.

Microwave-induced resistance oscillations in tilted magnetic fields

We have studied the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on microwave-induced resistance oscillations in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system. We have found that the oscillation amplitude decays exponentially with an in-plane component of the magnetic field $B_\parallel$. While these findings cannot be accounted for by existing theories, our analysis suggests that the decay can be explained by a $B_\parallel$-induced correction to the quantum scattering rate, which is quadratic in $B_\parallel$.

Thermoelectric response of fractional quantized Hall and re-entrant insulating states in the N=1 Landau level

Detailed measurements of the longitudinal thermopower of two-dimensional electrons in the first excited Landau level are reported. Clear signatures of numerous fractional quantized Hall states, including those at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/3, are observed in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the thermopower. An abrupt collapse of the thermopower is observed below about $T= 40$ mK at those filling factors where re-entrant insulating electronic states have been observed in conventional resistive transport studies. The thermopower observed at $ν= 5/2$ is discussed in the context of recent theories which incorporate non-abelian quasiparticle exchange statistics.

Anisotropic Fermi Contour of (001) GaAs Holes in Parallel Magnetic Fields

We report a severe, spin-dependent, Fermi contour anisotropy induced by parallel magnetic field in a high-mobility (001) GaAs two-dimensional hole system. Employing commensurability oscillations created by a unidirectional, surface-strain-induced, periodic potential modulation, we directly probe the anisotropy of the two spin subband Fermi contours. Their areas are obtained from the Fourier transform of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Our findings are in semi-quantitative agreement with the results of parameter-free calculations of the energy bands.

Exciton Transport in a Bilayer Quantum Hall Superfluid

Bilayer quantum Hall systems at ν=1 support an excitonic ground state. In addition to the usual charged quasiparticles, this system possesses a condensate degree of freedom: exciton transport. Detection of this neutral transport mode is facilitated by the use of the Corbino multiply-connected geometry in which charge transport is suppressed. We here summarize our recent experiments on Corbino devices which directly demonstrate exciton transport across the bulk of the incompressible ν=1 quantum Hall state.

Nonlinear response in overlapping and separated Landau levels of GaAs quantum wells

We have studied magnetotransport properties of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system subject to weak electric fields. At low magnetic field $B$, the differential resistivity acquires a correction $δr \propto -λ^2 j^2/B^2$, where $λ$ is the Dingle factor and $j$ is the current density, in agreement with theoretical predictions. At higher magnetic fields, however, $δr$ becomes $B$-independent, $δr \propto -j^2$. While the observed change in behavior can be attributed to a crossover from overlapping to separated Landau levels, full understanding of this behavior remains a subject of future theories.

Ballistic transport of (001) GaAs 2D holes through a strain-induced lateral superlattice

We report the observation of ballistic commensurability oscillations and positive magnetoresistance in a high-mobility, (001) GaAs two-dimensional hole system with a unidirectional, surface-strain-induced, periodic potential modulation. The positions of the resistivity minima agree well with the electrostatic commensurability condition. From an analysis of the amplitude of the oscillations we deduce a ballistic scattering time and an effective magnitude for the induced periodic potential seen by the two-dimensional holes.
