Search for neutrinoless quadruple beta decay of $^{136}$Xe in PandaX-4T detector

The observation of neutrinoless quadruple beta decay (0$\nu$4$\beta$) in the absence of neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu$2$\beta$) has been argued to provide a strong indication that neutrinos are Dirac particles. We report a search for 0$\nu$4$\beta$ decay of $^{136}\text{Xe}$ using a total $^{136}\text{Xe}$ exposure of 148.4 kg$\cdot$yr, collected during the commissioning and the first science runs of the PandaX-4T experiment. No significant excess of events over the background is observed. A lower limit on the 0$\nu$4$\beta$ decay half-life of $^{136}\text{Xe}$ is set at 6.01 x $10^{24}$ yr at the 90% confidence level. This result establishes the most stringent constraint on this process in xenon, demonstrating the unique capability of the PandaX-4T detector in probing lepton number violation and shedding light on the fundamental nature of neutrinos.

Development of Neutron Transmutation Doped Germanium (NTD-Ge) for Cryogenic Applications

This paper presents the systematic fabrication and characterization of cryogenic thermometers based on neutron transmutation-doped germanium (NTD-Ge). High-purity (10N) germanium samples were irradiated by thermal neutrons with different fluences at the China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR). After irradiation and a six-month cooling-down period, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were performed to characterize irradiation-induced defects and carrier concentrations in the NTD-Ge samples. Utilizing standard semiconductor fabrication techniques, point electrodes were deposited onto the processed samples to fabricate functional NTD-Ge cryogenic thermometers. The low-temperature resistance performance of the devices was characterized down to 20 mK on a millikelvin range cryogenic test platform. The measured temperature dependence of resistance follows Mott's law, showing excellent agreement across the full measured range. The extracted T0 is consistent with expectations. These results collectively verified both the applicability of the thermometers in cryogenic system and the reliability of the fabrication procedure.

Measurement of solar $pp$ neutrino flux with the new PandaX-4T data

We report a new measurement of the solar proton--proton ($pp$) neutrino flux via neutrino--electron elastic scattering using the PandaX-4T Run 2 data set collected between 2024 and 2026, corresponding to an exposure of 1.9 tonne$\cdot$yr. Before Run 2 data taking, the detector underwent a series of upgrades to improve its response and background conditions. Time variations of radioactive noble-gas impurities are constrained using the physics data themselves, complemented by measurements from the gas-assay system. The analysis introduced improvements in the data processing chain, detector response characterization, and background models. A blind spectral analysis was then performed on the electronic-recoil data across a wide energy range from 20 to 1000 keV. In combination with the Run 0 data published earlier, the fitted $pp$ flux is $(8.5 \pm 3.5)\times 10^{10}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$, consistent with the prediction of the Standard Solar Model. With a statistical significance of $2.2\sigma$ above background, this marks the first positive indication of solar $pp$ neutrino--electron scattering below an electronic-recoil energy of 165 keV.

The throttling refrigeration system for the large cooling power recovery of the PandaX-xT cryogenic distillation system for radon removal

In order to solve the continuous large cooling power supply problem (20 kW) for the radon-removal cryogenic distillation system, which operates at high liquid ffow rate of 856 kg/h (5 LPM) for the dark matter detector PandaX-xT of the next-generation, a throttling refrigeration system based on carbon tetraffuoride (R14) refrigerant for cooling power recovery is designed and developed. According to this system, the cooling power of the liquid xenon in the reboiler of 178K could be transferred to the product xenon cryostat to liquefy the gaseous product xenon by the R14 circulation, thus the liqueffed xenon could return to the detector with the same condition of which extracted from the detector to form a stable cooling cycle and prevent the instability of the detector. A research and development experiment is implemented to validate the feasibility of this large cooling recovery system, using the ethanol to simulate the liquid xenon. Experimental results show that the cooling power recovery of this system could achieve 17 kW with the efffciency of 76.5%, and the R14 ffow rate is 0.16 kg/s. This study realizes the online radon removal distillation with large ffow rate while eliminating the dependence of liquid nitrogen or cryocoolers, which means saving 2414 m3 liquid nitrogen per year or the power consumption of 230 kW. Furthermore, process simulation and optimization of the throttling refrigeration cycle is studied using Aspen Hysys to reveal the inffuences of the key parameters to the system, and the deviation between the simulation and experimental results is < 2.52%.

Pre-study of a Li2MoO4 based bolometer for 100Mo neutrinoless double beta decay experiment in China

The cryogenic phonon scintillating bolometer is a promising and extremely attractive option to search for the nuclide neutrinoless double beta decay. In this paper, a pre-study of bolometer based on Li2MoO4 (LMO) crystal is presented, in which the properties of the LMO crystal at the low temperature, including scintillation characteristics and specific heat, are investigated in detail. The excitation spectrum and light yield are measured from the room temperature down to 10 K, and heat capacity is measured down to temperature of O(200) mK. Furthermore, a (2 cm)3 cubic LMO based bolometer is manufactured and tested at ultra-low mK-level temperature in a ground-above cryostat platform, and a good energy resolution is achieved. The studies laid a foundation to manufacture the bolometer detector in China and conduct neutrinoless double beta decay research at the China Jinping Underground Laborator

A novel measurement method for SiPM external crosstalk probability at low temperature

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are being considered as potential replacements for conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). However, a significant disadvantage of SiPMs is crosstalk (CT), wherein photons propagate through other pixels, resulting in secondary avalanches. CT can be categorized into internal crosstalk and external crosstalk based on whether the secondary avalanche occurs within the same SiPM or a different one. Numerous methods exist for quantitatively estimating the percentage of internal crosstalk (iCT). However, external crosstalk (eCT) has not been extensively studied. This article presents a novel measurement method for the probability of emitting an external crosstalk photon during a single pixel avalanche, using a setup involving two identical SiPMs facing each other, and without the need for complex optical designs. The entire apparatus is enclosed within a stainless steel chamber, functioning as a light-tight enclosure, and maintained at liquid nitrogen temperature. The experimental setup incorporates two Sensl J-60035 SiPM chips along with two 0.5-inch Hamamatsu Photonics (HPK) VUV4 S13370-6050CN SiPM arrays. The findings show a linear relationship between the probability of emitting an external crosstalk photon and the SiPM overvoltage for both SiPM samples. Surprisingly, this novel measurement method also rovides measurements of the SiPM photon detection efficiency (PDE) for eCT photons at low temperature.

Unfolding environmental $γ$ flux spectrum with portable CZT detector

Environmental $γ$-rays constitute a crucial source of background in various nuclear, particle and quantum physics experiments. To evaluate the flux rate and the spectrum of $γ$ background, we have developed a novel and straightforward approach to reconstruct the environmental $γ$ flux spectrum by applying a portable CZT $γ$ detector and iterative Bayesian unfolding, which possesses excellent transferability for broader applications. In this paper, the calibration and GEANT4 Monte-Carlo modeling of the CZT detector, the unfolding procedure as well as the uncertainty estimation are demonstrated in detail. The reconstructed spectrum reveals an environmental $γ$ flux intensity of $3.3\pm 0.9\times 10^{7}$~ (m$^2\cdot$sr$\cdot$hour)$^{-1}$ ranging from 73 to 3033~keV, along with characteristic peaks primarily arising from $^{232}$Th series, $^{238}$U series and $^{40}$K. We also give an instance of background rate evaluation with the unfolded spectrum for validation of the approach.

SC-Safety: A Multi-round Open-ended Question Adversarial Safety Benchmark for Large Language Models in Chinese

Large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and GPT-4, have demonstrated remarkable abilities in natural language understanding and generation. However, alongside their positive impact on our daily tasks, they can also produce harmful content that negatively affects societal perceptions. To systematically assess the safety of Chinese LLMs, we introduce SuperCLUE-Safety (SC-Safety) - a multi-round adversarial benchmark with 4912 open-ended questions covering more than 20 safety sub-dimensions. Adversarial human-model interactions and conversations significantly increase the challenges compared to existing methods. Experiments on 13 major LLMs supporting Chinese yield the following insights: 1) Closed-source models outperform open-sourced ones in terms of safety; 2) Models released from China demonstrate comparable safety levels to LLMs like GPT-3.5-turbo; 3) Some smaller models with 6B-13B parameters can compete effectively in terms of safety. By introducing SC-Safety, we aim to promote collaborative efforts to create safer and more trustworthy LLMs. The benchmark and findings provide guidance on model selection. SuperCLUE: A Comprehensive Chinese Large Language Model Benchmark

Large language models (LLMs) have shown the potential to be integrated into human daily lives. Therefore, user preference is the most critical criterion for assessing LLMs' performance in real-world scenarios. However, existing benchmarks mainly focus on measuring models' accuracy using multi-choice questions, which limits the understanding of their capabilities in real applications. We fill this gap by proposing a comprehensive Chinese benchmark SuperCLUE, named after another popular Chinese LLM benchmark CLUE. SuperCLUE encompasses three sub-tasks: actual users' queries and ratings derived from an LLM battle platform (CArena), open-ended questions with single and multiple-turn dialogues (OPEN), and closed-ended questions with the same stems as open-ended single-turn ones (CLOSE). Our study shows that accuracy on closed-ended questions is insufficient to reflect human preferences achieved on open-ended ones. At the same time, they can complement each other to predict actual user preferences. We also demonstrate that GPT-4 is a reliable judge to automatically evaluate human preferences on open-ended questions in a Chinese context. Our benchmark will be released at https://www.CLUEbenchmarks.com

Measurement of reactor thermal neutron fluence of NTD-Ge by activation High-Purity Ge itself

In neutron transmutation doped germanium, the thermal neutron fluence of reactor irradiation is as high as 10$^{18}$~n$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. For radiological safety reasons, general Co or Au neutron flux monitors cannot be easily used. We have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the X-rays emitted by the NTD-Ge itself to determine the absolute thermal neutron fluence for the first time. A Micro-Megas Detector (MMD) and a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) are set up to detect the tagging KX-rays with 9.2 keV and 10.3 keV cascading from the decays of $^{71}$Ge. Combined the detection efficiencies calculated by GEANT4, neutron fluence results given with proper accuracy by MMD and SDD are in a good agreement with each other.

Identification of the anomalous fast bulk events in a p-type point contact germanium detector

The ultralow detection threshold, ultralow intrinsic background, and excellent energy resolution of p-type point-contact germanium detector are important for rare-event searches, in particular for the detection of direct dark matter interactions, coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, and neutrinoless double beta decay. Anomalous bulk events with an extremely fast rise time are observed in the CDEX-1B detector. We report a method of extracting fast bulk events from bulk events using a pulse shape simulation and reconstructed source experiment signature. Calibration data and the distribution of X-rays generated by intrinsic radioactivity verified that the fast bulk experienced a single hit near the passivation layer. The performance of this germanium detector indicates that it is capable of single-hit bulk spatial resolution and thus provides a background removal technique.
