Spin-Wave Theory for the Scalar Chiral Phase in the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model on a Triangular Lattice

We study the effects of quantum fluctuations on a non-coplanar tetrahedral spin structure, which has a scalar chiral order, in the spin-1/2 multiple-spin exchange model with up to the six-spin exchange interactions on a triangular lattice. We find that, in the linear spin-wave approximation, the tetrahedral structure survives the quantum fluctuations because spin waves do not soften in the whole parameter region of the tetrahedral-structure phase evaluated for the classical system. In the quantum corrections to the ground-state energy, sublattice magnetization, and scalar chirality, the effects of the quantum fluctuations are small for the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions and for the strong five-spin interactions. The six-spin interactions have little effect on the quantum corrections in the tetrahedral-structure phase. This calculation also corrects an error in the previously reported value of scalar chirality for the spin-1/2 multiple-spin exchange model with up to the four-spin exchange interactions.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model with up to the Six-Spin Exchange Interactions on the Triangular Lattice

The ground state of the multiple-spin exchange model with up to the six-spin exchange interactions on a triangular lattice in the magnetic field is investigated within the mean-field approximation. By comparing the phase diagrams of systems with and without the five- and six-spin interactions, we find that the five- and six-spin interactions expand the ferromagnetic phase. In contrast, the antiferromagnetic-like phases are contracted. A phase with a 1/2 plateau is also contracted by the five- and six-spin interactions. In addition to the results that have not yet been reported for systems with up to the four-spin interactions, we obtain new phases for systems with up to the six-spin interactions. In particular, a 1/6 plateau appears in the low magnetic field near the ferromagnetic phase in the magnetization process. This phase has a twelve-sublattice structure in which a unit cell consists of seven spins parallel to the magnetic field and five spins antiparallel to it.

Spin nematic order in multiple-spin exchange models on the triangular lattice

We figure out that the ground state of a multiple-spin exchange model applicable to thin films of solid 3He possesses an octahedral spin nematic order. In the presence of magnetic field, it is deformed into an antiferro-quadrupolar order in the perpendicular spin plane, in which lattice Z3 rotational symmetry is also broken. Furthermore, this system shows a narrow magnetization plateau at half, m/m_{sat}=1/2, which resembles recent magnetization measurement [H. Nema et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 075301 (2009)].

Vortex generation in the RSP game on the triangular lattice

A new model of population dynamics on lattices is proposed. The model consists of players on lattice points, each of which plays the RSP game with neighboring players. Each player copies the next hand from the hand of the neighbouring player with the maximum point. The model exhibits a steady pattern with pairs of vortices and sinks on the triangular lattice. It is shown that the stationary vortex is due to the frustrations on the triangular lattice. A frustration is the three-sided situation where each of the three players around a triangle chooses the rock, the scissors and the paper, respectively.

Phase Diagram of Spinless Fermions on an Anisotropic Triangular Lattice at Half-filling

The strong coupling phase diagram of the spinless fermions on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half-filling is presented. The geometry of inter-site Coulomb interactions rules the phase diagram. Unconventional charge ordered phases are detected which are the recently reported pinball liquid and the striped chains. Both are induced by the quantum dynamics out of classical disordered states and afford extremely correlated metallic states and the particular domain wall-type of excitations, respectively. The disorder once killed by the quantum effect revives at the finite temperature, which is discussed in the terms of the organic $θ$-ET$_2X$.

Spin-Wave Theory of the Multiple-Spin Exchange Model on a Triangular Lattice in a Magnetic Field : 3-Sublattice Structures

We study the spin wave in the S=1/2 multiple-spin exchange model on a triangular lattice in a magnetic field within the linear spin-wave theory. We take only two-, three- and four-spin exchange interactions into account and restrict ourselves to the region where a coplanar three-sublattice state is the mean-field ground state. We found that the Y-shape ground state survives quantum fluctuations and the phase transition to a phase with a 6-sublattice structure occurs with softening of the spin wave. We estimated the quantum corrections to the ground state sublattice magnetizations due to zero-point spin-wave fluctuations.

Flat-Bands on Partial Line Graphs -- Systematic Method for Generating Flat-Band Lattice Structures

We introduce a systematic method for constructing a class of lattice structures that we call ``partial line graphs''.In tight-binding models on partial line graphs, energy bands with flat energy dispersions emerge. This method can be applied to two- and three-dimensional systems. We show examples of partial line graphs of square and cubic lattices. The method is useful in providing a guideline for synthesizing materials with flat energy bands, since the tight-binding models on the partial line graphs provide us a large room for modification, maintaining the flat energy dispersions.

Carrier States and Ferromagnetism in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors

Applying the dynamical coherent potential approximation to a simple model, we have systematically studied the carrier states in $A_{1-x}$Mn$_xB$-type diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS's). The model calculation was performed for three typical cases of DMS's: The cases with strong and moderate exchange interactions in the absence of nonmagnetic potentials, and the case with strong attractive nonmagnetic potentials in addition to moderate exchange interaction. When the exchange interaction is sufficiently strong, magnetic impurity bands split from the host band. Carriers in the magnetic impurity band mainly stay at magnetic sites, and coupling between the carrier spin and the localized spin is very strong. The hopping of the carriers among the magnetic sites causes ferromagnetism through a {\it double-exchange (DE)-like} mechanism. We have investigated the condition for the DE-like mechanism to operate in DMS's. The result reveals that the nonmagnetic attractive potential at the magnetic site assists the formation of the magnetic impurity band and makes the DE-like mechanism operative by substantially enhancing the effect of the exchange interaction. Using conventional parameters we have studied the carrier states in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As. The result shows that the ferromagnetism is caused through the DE-like mechanism by the carriers in the bandtail originating from the impurity states.

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with orbital degeneracy: From low to high electron density

We studied ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with doubly degenerate atomic orbitals by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method and obtained the ground-state phase diagrams. It was found that ferromagnetism is stable from low to high (0< n < 1.75) electron density when the interactions are sufficiently strong. Quasi-long-range order of triplet superconductivity coexists with the ferromagnetic order for a strong Hund coupling region, where the inter-orbital interaction U'-J is attractive. At quarter-filling (n=1), the insulating ferromagnetic state appears accompanying orbital quasi-long-range order. For low densities (n<1), ferromagnetism occurs owing to the ferromagnetic exchange interaction caused by virtual hoppings of electrons, the same as in the quarter-filled system. This comes from separation of the charge and spin-orbital degrees of freedom in the strong coupling limit. This ferromagnetism is fragile against variation of band structure. For high densities (n>1), the phase diagram of the ferromagnetic phase is similar to that obtained in infinite dimensions. In this case, the double exchange mechanism is operative to stabilize the ferromagnetic order and this long-range order is robust against variation of the band-dispersion. A partially polarized state appears in the density region 1.68<n<1.75 and phase separation occurs for n just below the half-filling (n=2).

Magnetic Order in the Double Exchange Model in Infinite Dimensions

We studied magnetic properties of the double exchange (DE) model with S=1/2 localized spins at T=0, using exact diagonalization in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory. Obtained phase diagram contains ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. Comparing the phase diagram with that of the DE model with classical localized spins, we found that the quantum fluctuations of localized spins partly destabilize the ferromagnetism and expand the paramagnetic phase region. We found that phase separations occur between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases as well as the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic ones.

Magnetization plateau in a two-dimensional multiple-spin exchange model

We study a multiple-spin exchange model on a triangular lattice, which is a possible model for low-density solid 3He films. Due to strong competitions between ferromagnetic three-spin exchange and antiferromagnetic four-spin one, the ground states are highly degenerate in the classical limit. At least 2^{L/2}-fold degeneracy exists on the L*L triangular lattice except for the SO(3) symmetry. In the magnetization process, we found a plateau at m/m_{sat}=1/2, in which the ground state is "uuud state" (a collinear state with four sublattices). The 1/2-plateau appears due to the strong four-spin exchange interaction. This plateau survives against both quantum and thermal fluctuations. Under a magnetic field which realizes the "uuud" ordered state, a phase transition occurs at a finite temperature. We predict that low-density solid 3He thin films may show the 1/2-plateau in the magnetization process. Experimental observation of the plateau will verify strength of the four-spin exchange. It is also discussed that this magnetization plateau can be understood as an insulating-conducting transition in a particle picture.

Ferromagnetism in the Hubbard model with orbital degeneracy in infinite dimensions

We study the ferromagnetism due to orbital degeneracy in the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. The model contains the intraorbital repulsion $U$, the interorbital repulsion $U^\prime$, the exchange $J$ (Hund coupling) and the pair hopping $J^\prime$, where all of them originate from the on-site Coulomb interaction. The ground state of the effective one-site problem was obtained by exact diagonalizations. At the 1/4-filling, we found two insulating phases; one is a ferromagnetic phase with alternating orbital order and the other is antiferromagnetic one with uniform orbital order. If electrons are doped into the 1/4-filling, the ferromagnetic phase still survives and becomes metallic, while the antiferromagnetic phase disappears. This result indicates that the double-exchange mechanism is relevant to stabilize metallic ferromagnetism in infinite dimensions.

Ground State of a Spin System with Two- and Four-spin Exchange Interactions on the Triangular Lattice

We study a spin system with both two- and four-spin exchange interactions on the triangular lattice as a possible model for the nuclear magnetism of solid $^3$He layers adsorbed on grafoil. The ground state is analyzed by the use of the mean-field approximation. It is shown that the four-sublattice state is favored by introduction of the four-spin exchange interaction. A possible phase transition at a finite temperature into a phase with the scalar chirality is predicted. Application of a magnetic field is shown to cause a variety of phase transitions.

Possible chiral phase transition in two-dimensional solid $^3$He

We study a spin system with two- and four-spin exchange interactions on the triangular lattice, which is a possible model for the nuclear magnetism of solid $^3$He layers. It is found that a novel spin structure with scalar chiral order appears if the four-spin interaction is dominant. Ground-state properties are studied using the spin-wave approximation. A phase transition concerning the scalar chirality occurs at a finite temperature, even though the dimensionality of the system is two and the interaction has isotropic spin symmetry. Critical properties of this transition are studied with Monte Carlo simulations in the classical limit.

Elementary excitations in the $Δ$-chain

We clarify elementary excitations in the $Δ$-chain. They are found to be `kink'-`antikink' type domain wall excitations to the dimer singlet ground state. The characters of a kink and an antikink are quite different in this system: a kink has no excitation energy and is localized, while an antikink has a finite excitation energy and propagates. The excitation energy of a kink-antikink pair consists of a finite energy gap and a kinetic energy due to the free motion of the antikink. Variational wave functions for an antikink are studied to clarify its propagating states. All the numerical results are explained consistently based on this picture. At finite temperatures, thermally excited antikinks are moving in regions bounded by localized kinks. The origin of the low-temperature peak in the specific heat reported previously is explained and the peak position in the thermodynamic limit is estimated.
