Charge transfer excitons in optical absorption spectra of C60-dimers and polymers

Charge-transfer (CT) exciton effects are investigated for the optical absorption spectra of crosslinked C60 systems by using the intermediate exciton theory. We consider the C60-dimers, and the two (and three) molecule systems of the C60-polymers. We use a tight-binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions among electrons, and the model is treated by the Hartree-Fock approximation followed by the single-excitation configuration interaction method. We discuss the variations in the optical spectra by changing the conjugation parameter between molecules. We find that the total CT-component increases in smaller conjugations, and saturates at the intermediate conjugations. It decreases in the large conjugations. We also find that the CT-components of the doped systems are smaller than those of the neutral systems, indicating that the electron-hole distance becomes shorter in the doped C60-polymers.

Electronic Structures in C60-Polymers (review)

Variations in the band structures of C60-polymers are studied, when conjugation conditions and the electron number are changed. We use a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electron-phonon interactions. In the neutral one-dimensional C60-polymer, electronic structures change among direct-gap insulators and the metal, depending on the degree of conjugations. High pressure experiments could observe such pressure-induced metal-insulator transitions. The C60-polymer doped with one electron per one molecule is always a metal. The energy difference between the highest-occupied state and the lowest-unoccupied state of the neutral system becomes smaller upon doping owing to the polaron effects. When the C60-polymer is doped with two electrons per one C60, the system is insulating. When the conjugation in the direction of the polymer chain is smaller, it is a direct-gap insulator. The energy gap becomes indirect when the conjugation is stronger. We also study the antiferromagnetic phase of AC60 by using a tight-binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions. The antiferromagnetism is well described by the model. The comparison with the photoemission studies shows that the new band around the Fermi energy of the AC60 phase can be explaind by the extremely large intrusion of an energy level into the gap of the neutral system. This indicates that the interaction effects among electrons are important in doped C60-polymers.

Strongly-interacting model for antiferromagnetism in one-dimensional C60-polymers: A1C60

We study the antiferromagnetic phase of the C60-polymer doped with one electron per one C60 by using a tight-binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions. The model is solved by the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, and a phase diagram is obtained by changing Coulomb interaction strengths and a conjugation parameter between C60 molecules. We find that the antiferromagnetism is well described by the present model. The comparison with the photoemission studies shows that the new band around the Fermi energy of the A1C60 phase can be explaind by the extremely large intrusion of an energy level into the gap of the neutral system. Exciton effects and nonlinear optical response in soliton lattice states of doped conjugated polymers

Exciton effects on conjugated polymers are investigated in the soliton lattice system. We use the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with long-range Coulomb interactions treated by the single-excitation configuration-interaction method. The soliton band is present in the Peierls gap of the doped system. There appears a new kind of the exciton where an electron-hole pair is excited between the soliton band and the continuum states. We find that the oscillator strengths accumulate rapidly at this exciton as the soliton concentration increases. The contribution from the lowest exciton is more than 90% at the 10% doping. The third-harmonic generation (THG) at off-resonance frequencies is calculated as functions of the soliton concentration and the chain length of the polymer. The optical nonlinearity by the THG at the 10% doping increases by the factor about 10^2 from that of the neutral system.

Nonlinear optical response from excitons in soliton lattice systems of doped conjugated polymers

Exciton effects on conjugated polymers are investigated in soliton lattice states. We use the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with long-range Coulomb interactions. The Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation and the single-excitation configuration- interaction (single-CI) method are used to obtain optical absorption spectra. The third-harmonic generation (THG) at off-resonant frequencies is calculated as functions of the soliton concentration and the chain length of the polymer. The magnitude of the THG at the 10 percent doping increases by the factor about 10^2 from that of the neutral system. This is owing to the accumulation of the oscillator strengths at the lowest exciton with increasing the soliton concentration. The increase by the order two is common for several choices of Coulomb interaction strengths.

Metallic and insulating states in two-dimensional C60-polymers

Variations in the band structures of the two-dimensional C60-polymers are studied, when pi-conjugation conditions are changed. We investigate the rectangular and triangular polymers, in order to discuss metal-insulator transitions, using a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electron-phonon interactions. We find that electronic structures change among direct-gap insulators and the metal, depending on the degree of pi-conjugations in the rectangular polymer. The triangular polymer changes from the indirect gap insulator to the metal as the pi-conjugations increase. High pressure experiments could observe such pressure-induced metal-insulator transitions.

Excitons in soliton and bipolaron lattice states of doped Peierls systems

Exciton effects on soliton and bipolaron lattice states are investigated using an electron-lattice Peierls model with long-range Coulomb interactions. The Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation and the single-excitation configuration-interaction (single-CI) method are used to obtain optical absorption spectra. We discuss the following properties: (1) The attraction between the excited electron and the remaining hole makes the excitation energy smaller when the correlations are taken into account by the single-CI. The oscillator strengths of the lower excited states become relatively larger than in the HF calculations. (2) We look at variations of relative oscillator strengths of two or three kinds of excitons described by the single-CI. While the excess-electron concentration is small, the ratio of the oscillator strengths of the exciton with the lowest energy, which is calculated against the total electronic excitation oscillator strengths, increases almost linearly. The oscillator strengths accumulate at this exciton as the concentration increases.

Optical response of C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ fullerenes:

Molecular exciton effects in the neutral and maximally doped C$_{60}$ (C$_{70}$) are considered using a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interactions and bond disorder. By comparing calculated and observed optical spectra, we conclude that relevant Coulomb parameters for the doped cases are about half of those of the neutral systems. The broadening of absorption peaks is well simulated by the bond disorder model.

Optical absorption spectra of A6C60 and A6C70: Reduction of effective Coulomb interactions in Frenkel excitons

We theoretically investigate optical absorption spectra of $\soc^{6-}$ and $\rug^{6-}$, and discuss relations with the optical properties of alkali metal doped fullerides $A_6\soc$ and $A_6\rug$. This is a valid approach for systems where Frenkel exciton effects are dominant. We use a tight binding model with long ranged Coulomb interactions and bond disorder. Optical spectra are obtained by the Hartree-Fock approximation and the configuration interaction method. We find that the Coulomb interaction parameters, which are relevant to the optical spectra of $A_6\soc$ ($A_6\rug$) in order to explain the excitation energies and relative oscillator strengths of absorption peaks, are almost the half of those of the neutral $\soc$ ($\rug$). The reduction of the effective Coulomb interactions is concluded for the heavily doped case of $\soc$ and $\rug$. This finding is closely related with the experimental fact that dielectric constants of fullerides which are maximumly doped with alkali metals become about twice as large as those of the neutral systems.

Optical Absorption in Higher Fullerenes: Effects of Symmetry Reduction

Optical absorption spectra of higher fullerenes (C70 and C76) as well as of C60 are calculated by a tight binding model with a long range Coulomb interaction. A reasonable parameter set gives calculated spectra which are in overall agreement with the experiments of of C60 and C76 in solutions. The variations of the spectral shape are discussed relating with the symmetry reduction going from C60 and C70 to C76: the optical gap decreases and the spectra have more small structures in the dependences on the excitation energy. Optical absorption spectra in fullerenes C60 and C70: Effects of Coulomb interactions, lattice fluctuations, and anisotropy

Effects of Coulomb interactions and lattice fluctuations in the optical absorption spectra of C60 and C70 are theoretically investigated by using a tight binding model with long-range Coulomb interaction and bond disorder. Anisotropy effects in C70 are also considered. Optical spectra are calculated by using the Hartree-Fock approximation followed by the configuration interaction method. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The broad peaks at excitation energies, 3.7eV, 4.7eV, and 5.7eV, observed in experiments of C60 molecules in a solution are reasonably described by the present theory. Peak positions and relative oscillator strengths are in overall agreement with the experiments. The broadening of peaks by lattice fluctuations is well simulated by the bond disorder model. (2) The optical gap of C70 is larger when the electric field of light is parallel to the long axis of the molecule. The shape of the frequency dispersion also depends on the orientation of the molecule. These properties are common in the free electron model and the model with Coulomb interactions. (3) The spectrum of C70 averaged over bond disorder and random orientations is compared with experiments in a solution. There is an overall agreement about the spectral shape. Differences in the spectra of C60 and C70 are discussed in connection with the symmetry reduction from a soccerball to a rugbyball.

Theory of an elastic anomaly in the heavy fermion system CeTe

The elastic anomaly observed in the coherent Kondo state of Ce heavy fermion compounds is analyzed by using the Anderson lattice model simulating the energy level scheme of CeTe. The $Γ_7$ doublets and $Γ_8$ quartets of the 4f states are considered in the model. We solve the mean field equations to derive the temperature dependences of elastic constants, using the random phase approximation like expression for the interaction between the elastic strain and the crystalline field splitting. We compare the calculation with the $(c_{11} - c_{12})/2$ and $c_{44}$ constants of CeTe. The presence of the downward dip and the observed overall temperature variations of the two constants are well described by the present theory. The origin of the dip is the coupling between the elastic strain and the splitting of the $Γ_8$ quartets.

Elastic anomaly of heavy fermion systems in a crystalline field II

An elastic anomaly, observed in the heavy Fermi liquid state of Ce alloys (for example, CeCu_6 and CeTe), is analyzed by using the infinite-U Anderson lattice model. Four atomic energy levels are assumed for f-electrons. Two of them are mutually degenerate. A small crystalline splitting 2 Delta is assumed between two energy levels. Fourfold degenerate conduction bands are also considered. We solve the model using the mean field approximation to slave bosons and the renormalized elastic constant is calculated. The temperature dependence of the constant shows the downward dip. The result is compared with the experimental data of CeTe.
