On a constrained reaction-diffusion system related to multiphase problems

We solve and characterize the Lagrange multipliers of a reaction-diffusion system in the Gibbs simplex of R^{N+1} by considering strong solutions of a system of parabolic variational inequalities in R^N. Exploring properties of the two obstacles evolution problem, we obtain and approximate a N-system involving the characteristic functions of the saturated and/or degenerated phases in the nonlinear reaction terms. We also show continuous dependence results and we establish sufficient conditions of non-degeneracy for the stability of those phase subregions.

Dynamics of Bloch Oscillations in Disordered Lattice Potentials

We present a detailed analysis of the dynamics of Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered lattice potentials. Due to the disorder and the interparticle interactions these oscillations undergo a dephasing, reflected in a damping of the center of mass oscillations, which should be observable under realistic experimental conditions. The interplay between interactions and disorder is far from trivial, ranging from an interaction-enhanced damping due to modulational instability for strong interactions, to an interaction-reduced damping due to a dynamical screening of the disorder potential.

Kelvon-roton instability of vortex lines in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

The physics of vortex lines in dipolar condensates is studied. Due to the nonlocality of the dipolar interaction, the 3D character of the vortex plays a more important role in dipolar gases than in typical short-range interacting ones. In particular, the dipolar interaction significantly affects the stability of the transverse modes of the vortex line. Remarkably, in the presence of a periodic potential along the vortex line, a roton minimum may develop in the spectrum of transverse modes. We discuss the appropriate conditions at which this roton minimum may eventually lead to an instability of the straight vortex line, opening new scenarios for vortices in dipolar gases.

Dipolar gases in quasi one-dimensional geometries

We analyze the physics of cold dipolar gases in quasi one-dimensional geometries, showing that the confinement-induced scattering resonances produced by the transversal trapping are crucially affected by the dipole-dipole interaction. As a consequence, the dipolar interaction may drastically change the properties of quasi-1D dipolar condensates, even for situations in which the dipolar interaction would be completely overwhelmed by the short-range interactions in a 3D environment.

Mott-insulator phases of non-locally coupled 1D dipolar Bose gases

We analyze the Mott-insulator phases of dipolar bosonic gases placed in neighboring but unconnected 1D traps. Whereas for short-range interactions the 1D systems are independent, the non-local dipole-dipole interaction induces a direct Mott-insulator to pair-superfluid transition which significantly modifies the boundaries of the lowest Mott-insulator phases. The lowest boundary of the lowest Mott regions becomes progressively constant as a function of the hopping rate, eventually inverting its slope, leading to a re-entrant configuration which is retained in 2D. We discuss the consequences of this effect on the spatial Mott-insulator plateaux in experiments with additional harmonic confinement, showing that anti-intuitively the plateaux may become wider for increasing hopping. Our results are also applicable to non-dipolar boson-boson mixtures.

Spinor condensates with a laser-induced quadratic Zeeman effect

We show that an effective quadratic Zeeman effect can be generated in $^{52}$Cr by proper laser configurations, and in particular by the dipole trap itself. The induced quadratic Zeeman effect leads to a rich ground-state phase diagram, can be used to induce topological defects by controllably quenching across transitions between phases of different symmetries, allows for the observability of the Einstein-de Haas effect for relatively large magnetic fields, and may be employed to create $S=1/2$ systems with spinor dynamics. Similar ideas could be explored in other atomic species opening an exciting new control tool in spinor systems.

Scattering of two-dimensional solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the scattering of bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates placed in unconnected layers. Whereas for short-range interactions unconnected layers are independent, a remarkable consequence of the dipole interaction is the appearance of novel nonlocal interlayer effects. In particular, we show that the interlayer interaction leads to an effective molecular potential between disconnected solitons, inducing a complex scattering physics between them, which includes inelastic fusion into soliton-molecules, and strong symmetric and asymmetric inelastic resonances. In addition, a fundamentally new 2D scattering scenario in matter-wave solitons is possible, in which inelastic spiraling occurs, resembling phenomena in photorrefractive materials. Finally, we consider the scattering of unconnected 1D solitons and discuss the feasibility in current on going experiments.

Collective oscillations of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates and accurate comparison between contact and dipolar interaction

We propose a scheme for the measurement of the s-wave scattering length $a$ of an atom or molecule with significant dipole-dipole interaction with an accuracy at the percent level. The frequencies of the collective oscillations of a Bose-Einstein condensate are shifted by the magnetic dipole interaction. The shift is polarization dependent and proportional to the ratio $ε_{dd}$ of dipolar and s-wave coupling constants. Measuring the differences in the frequencies for different polarization we can extract the value of $ε_{dd}$ and thus measure $a$. We calculate the frequency shifts for a large variety of non-axisymmetric harmonic traps in the Thomas-Fermi limit and find optimal trapping geometries to maximize the shifts.

Expansion dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

Our recent measurements on the expansion of a chromium dipolar condensate after release from an optical trapping potential are in good agreement with an exact solution of the hydrodynamic equations for dipolar Bose gases. We report here the theoretical method used to interpret the measurement data as well as more details of the experiment and its analysis. The theory reported here is a tool for the investigation of different dynamical situations in time-dependent harmonic traps.

Spin-3 Chromium Bose-Einstein Condensates

We analyze the physics of spin-3 Bose-Einstein condensates, and in particular the new physics expected in on-going experiments with condensates of Chromium atoms. We first discuss the ground-state properties, which, depending on still unknown Chromium parameters, and for low magnetic fields can present various types of phases. We also discuss the spinor-dynamics in Chromium spinor condensates, which present significant qualitative differences when compared to other spinor condensates. In particular, dipole-induced spin relaxation may lead for low magnetic fields to transfer of spin into angular momentum similar to the well-known Einstein-de Haas effect. Additionally, a rapid large transference of population between distant magnetic states becomes also possible.

Quantum gases in trimerized kagomé lattices

We study low temperature properties of atomic gases in trimerized optical kagomé lattices. The laser arrangements that can be used to create these lattices are briefly described. We also present explicit results for the coupling constants of the generalized Hubbard models that can be realized in such lattices. In the case of a single component Bose gas the existence of a Mott insulator phase with fractional numbers of particles per trimer is verified in a mean field approach. The main emphasis of the paper is on an atomic spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized kagomé lattice with two fermions per site. This system is shown to be described by a quantum spin 1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings that depend on the bond directions. We investigate this model by means of exact diagonalization. Our key finding is that the system exhibits non-standard properties of a quantum spin-liquid crystal: it combines planar antiferromagnetic order in the ground state with an exceptionally large number of low energy excitations. The possibilities of experimental verification of our theoretical results are critically discussed.

Observation of dipole-dipole interaction in a degenerate quantum gas

We have investigated the expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of strongly magnetic chromium atoms. The long-range and anisotropic magnetic dipole-dipole interaction leads to an anisotropic deformation of the expanding Cr-BEC which depends on the orientation of the atomic dipole moments. Our measurements are consistent with the theory of dipolar quantum gases and show that a Cr-BEC is an excellent model system to study dipolar interactions in such gases.

Atomic Fermi gas in the trimerized Kagomé lattice at the filling 2/3

We study low temperature properties of an atomic spinless interacting Fermi gas in the trimerized Kagomé lattice for the case of two fermions per trimer. The system is described by a quantum spin 1/2 model on the triangular lattice with couplings depending on bonds directions. Using exact diagonalizations we show that the system exhibits non-standard properties of a {\it quantum spin-liquid crystal}, combining a planar antiferromagnetic order with an exceptionally large number of low energy excitations.

Sympathetic cooling of trapped fermions by bosons in the presence of particle losses

We study the sympathetic cooling of a trapped Fermi gas interacting with an ideal Bose gas below the critical temperature of the Bose-Einstein condensation. We derive the quantum master equation, which describes the dynamics of the fermionic component, and postulating the thermal distribution for both gases we calculate analytically the rate at which fermions are cooled by the bosonic atoms. The particle losses constitute an important source of heating of the degenerate Fermi gas. We evaluate the rate of loss-induced heating and derive analytical results for the final temperature of fermions, which is limited in the presence of particle losses.

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices with random on-site interactions

We consider the physics of lattice bosons affected by disordered on-site interparticle interactions. Characteristic qualitative changes in the zero temperature phase diagram are observed when compared to the case of randomness in the chemical potential. The Mott-insulating regions shrink and eventually vanish for any finite disorder strength beyond a sufficiently large filling factor. Furthermore, at low values of the chemical potential both the superfluid and Mott insulator are stable towards formation of a Bose glass leading to a possibly non-trivial tricritical point. We discuss feasible experimental realizations of our scenario in the context of ultracold atoms on optical lattices.

Two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the physics of bright solitons in two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. These solitons are not possible in short-range interacting gases. In particular, we discuss the necessary conditions for the existence of stable 2D bright solitary waves. The stability of the solutions is studied by means of the analysis of lowest-lying excitations. Additionally, we study the scattering of solitary waves, which contrary to the contact-interacting case, is inelastic, and could lead to fusion of solitary waves. Finally, the experimental possibilities for observability are discussed.

Cold atoms in non-Abelian gauge potentials: From the Hofstadter "moth" to lattice gauge theory

We demonstrate how to create artificial external non-Abelian gauge potentials acting on cold atoms in optical lattices. The method employs $n$ internal states of atoms and laser assisted state sensitive tunneling. Thus, dynamics are communicated by unitary $n\times n$-matrices. By experimental control of the tunneling parameters, the system can be made truly non-Abelian. We show that single particle dynamics in the case of intense U(2) vector potentials lead to a generalized Hofstadter butterfly spectrum which shows a complex ``moth''-like structure. We discuss the possibility to employ non-Abelian interferometry (Aharonov-Bohm effect) and address methods to realize matter dynamics in specific classes of lattice gauge fields.

Mott-insulator phase of coupled 1D atomic gases in a 2D optical lattice

We discuss the 2D Mott insulator (MI) state of a 2D array of coupled finite size 1D Bose gases. It is shown that the momentum distribution in the lattice plane is very sensitive to the interaction regime in the 1D tubes. In particular, we find that the disappearance of the interference pattern in time of flight experiments will not be a signature of the MI phase, but a clear consequence of the strongly interacting Tonks-Girardeau regime along the tubes.
