Stability of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

In three-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), described by the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii-Ginzburg equation, we study the effect of initial conditions on stability using a Gaussian variational approach and exact numerical simulations. We also discuss the validity of the criterion for stability suggested by Vakhitov and Kolokolov. The maximum initial chirp (initial focusing defocusing of cloud) that can lead a stable condensate to collapse even before the number of atoms reaches its critical limit is obtained for several specific cases. When we consider two- and three-body nonlinear terms, with negative cubic and positive quintic terms, we have the conditions for the existence of two phases in the condensate. In this case, the magnitude of the oscillations between the two phases are studied considering sufficient large initial chirps. The occurrence of collapse in a BEC with repulsive two-body interaction is also shown to be possible.

Autosolitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with two- and three-body inelastic processes

In this work, we consider the conditions for the existence of autosolitons, in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive atomic interactions. First, the variational approach is employed to estimate the stationary solutions for the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with trap potential, linear atomic feeding from the thermal cloud and two- and three-body inelastic processes. Next, by using exact numerical calculations, we show that the variational approach gives reliable analytical results. We also discuss the possible observation of autosolitons in experiments with Lithium-7.

Dirac's hole theory versus quantum field theory

Dirac's hole theory and quantum field theory are usually considered equivalent to each other. For models of a certain type, however, the equivalence may not hold as we discuss in this Letter. This problem is closely related to the validity of the Pauli principle in intermediate states of perturbation theory.

Stability analysis of the D-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with trap and two- and three-body interactions

Considering the static solutions of the D-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with trap and attractive two-body interactions, the existence of stable solutions is limited to a maximum critical number of particles, when D is greater or equal 2. In case D=2, we compare the variational approach with the exact numerical calculations. We show that, the addition of a positive three-body interaction allows stable solutions beyond the critical number. In this case, we also introduce a dynamical analysis of the conditions for the collapse.

On high $Q^{2}$ behavior of the pion form factor for transitions $γ^{\ast} γ\to π^{0}$ and $γ^{\ast} γ^{\ast} \to π^{0}$ within the nonlocal quark-pion model

The behavior of the transition pion form factor for processes γ^*γ-> π^0 and γ^* γ^* -> π^0 at large values of space-like photon momenta is estimated within the nonlocal covariant quark-pion model. It is shown that, in general, the coefficient of the leading asymptotic term depends dynamically on the ratio of the constituent quark mass and the average virtuality of quarks in the vacuum and kinematically on the ratio of photon virtualities. The kinematic dependence of the transition form factor allows us to obtain the relation between the pion light-cone distribution amplitude and the quark-pion vertex function. The dynamic dependence indicates that the transition form factor γ^* γ-> π^0 at high momentum transfers is very sensitive to the nonlocality size of nonperturbative fluctuations in the QCD vacuum.

Virtual states of light non-Borromean halo nuclei

It is shown that the three-body non-Borromean halo nuclei like ^{12}Be, ^{18}C, ^{20}C have p-wave virtual states with energy of about 1.6 times the corresponding neutron-core binding energy. We use a renormalizable model that guarantees the general validity of our results in the context of short range interactions.

Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensation with Three-Body Interactions and Collective Excitations

The stability of a Bose-Einstein condensed state of trapped ultra-cold atoms is investigated under the assumption of an attractive two-body and a repulsive three-body interaction. The Ginzburg-Pitaevskii-Gross (GPG) nonlinear Schrödinger equation is extended to include an effective potential dependent on the square of the density and solved numerically for the s-wave. The lowest frequency of the collective mode is determined and its dependences on the number of atoms and on the strength of the three-body force are studied. We show that the addition of three-body dynamics can allow the number of condensed atoms to increase considerably, even when the strength of the three-body force is very small compared with the strength of the two-body force. We also observe a first-order liquid-gas phase transition for the condensed state up to a critical strength of the effective three-body force.

Liquid-Gas phase transition in Bose-Einstein Condensates with time evolution

We study the effects of a repulsive three-body interaction on a system of trapped ultra-cold atoms in Bose-Einstein condensed state. The stationary solutions of the corresponding $s-$wave non-linear Schrödinger equation suggest a scenario of first-order liquid-gas phase transition in the condensed state up to a critical strength of the effective three-body force. The time evolution of the condensate with feeding process and three-body recombination losses has a new characteristic pattern. Also, the decay time of the dense (liquid) phase is longer than expected due to strong oscillations of the mean-square-radius.

Non-linear Regge spectrum fits to experimentally up-dated meson states

The exciting feature of recent times is the inflow of new experimental data. Fits to the $π, \r$ and f meson resonances found by the VES collaboration, along with those of the PDG 1998 compilation are reported using a non-linear model for Regge trajectories. There are only five parameters including the pion mass and the states come out as Regge -type excitations of the pion. Total number of mesons fitted are 23 and the fit is good to $\sim$ 3% for 18 of them and $\sim$ 9% for others.

Renormalization of the one-pion-exchange interaction

A renormalization scheme for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on a subtracted T-matrix equation is proposed and applied to the one-pion-exchange potential supplemented by contact interactions. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths are given to fix the renormalized strengths of the contact interactions. With only one scaling parameter ($μ$), the results show an overall very good agreement with neutron-proton data, particularly for the observables related to the triplet channel. The agreement is qualitative in the $^1S_0$ channel. Between the low-energy NN observables we have examined, the mixing parameter of the $^3S_1-^3D_1$ states is the most sensible to the scale. The scheme is renormalization group invariant for $μ\to\infty$.

Many-body system with a four-parameter family of point interactions in one dimension

We consider a four-parameter family of point interactions in one dimension. This family is a generalization of the usual $δ$-function potential. We examine a system consisting of many particles of equal masses that are interacting pairwise through such a generalized point interaction. We follow McGuire who obtained exact solutions for the system when the interaction is the $δ$-function potential. We find exact bound states with the four-parameter family. For the scattering problem, however, we have not been so successful. This is because, as we point out, the condition of no diffraction that is crucial in McGuire's method is not satisfied except when the four-parameter family is essentially reduced to the $δ$-function potential.

Validity of Feynman's prescription of disregarding the Pauli principle in intermediate states

Regarding the Pauli principle in quantum field theory and in many-body quantum mechanics, Feynman advocated that Pauli's exclusion principle can be completely ignored in intermediate states of perturbation theory. He observed that all virtual processes (of the same order) that violate the Pauli principle cancel out. Feynman accordingly introduced a prescription, which is to disregard the Pauli principle in all intermediate processes. This ingeneous trick is of crucial importance in the Feynman diagram technique. We show, however, an example in which Feynman's prescription fails. This casts doubts on the general validity of Feynman's prescription.

Quark Distribution in Pion within Instanton Liquid Model

The leading-twist valence-quark distribution function in the pion is obtained at a low normalization scale of an order of the inverse average size of an instanton $ρ_c$. The momentum dependent quark mass and the quark-pion vertex are constructed in the framework of the instanton liquid model, using a gauge invariant approach. The parameters of instanton vacuum, the effective instanton radius and quark mass, are related to the vacuum expectation values of the lowest dimension quark-gluon operators and to the pion low energy observables. An analytic expression for the quark distribution function in the pion for a general vertex function is derived. The results are QCD evolved to higher momentum-transfer values, and reasonable agreement with phenomenological analyzes of the data on parton distributions for the pion is found.

Universal aspects of Efimov states and light halo nuclei

The parametric region in the plane defined by the ratios of the energies of the subsystems and the three body ground state, in which Efimov states can exist, is determined. We use a renormalizable model that guarantees the general validity of our results in the context of short range interactions. The experimental data for one and two-neutron separation energies, implies that among the halo-nuclei candidates, only C-20 has a possible Efimov state, with energy less than 14 KeV below the scattering threshold.

Quark-antiquark correlation in the pion

The electromagnetic tensor for inclusive electron scattering off the pion, ($W^{μν}$), for momentum transfers such that $q^+=0$, ($q^+=q^0+q^3$) is shown to obey a sum-rule for the component $W^{++}$. From this sum-rule, one can define the quark-antiquark correlation function in the pion, which characterizes the transverse distance distribution between the quark and antiquark in the light-front pion wave-function. Within the realistic models of the relativistic pion wave function (including instanton vacuum inspired wave function) it is shown that the value of the two-quark correlation radius ($r_{q\bar q}$) is near twice the pion electromagnetic radius ($r_π$), where $r_π \approx 2/3$ fm. We also define the correlation length $l_{corr}$ where the two - particle correlation have an extremum. The estimation of $l_{corr}\approx 0.3 - 0.5$ fm is very close to estimations from instanton models of QCD vacuum. It is also shown that the above correlation is very sensitive to the pion light-front wave-function models.

Scaling Law for Baryon Coupling to its Current and its possible applications

The baryon- coupling to its current ($λ_{B}$), in conventional QCD sum rule calculations (QCDSR), is shown to scale as the cubic power of the baryon mass, $M_B$. Some theoretical justification for it comes from a simple light-cone model and also general scaling arguments for QCD. But more importantly, taken as a phenomenological ansatz for the present, this may find very good use in current explorations of possible applications of QCDSR to baryon physics both at temperature $T = 0$, $T \ne 0$ and/or density $ρ= 0$, $ρ\ne 0$.
