Generalized periodic orbits in some restricted three-body problems

We treat the circular and elliptic restricted three-body problems in inertial frames as periodically forced Kepler problems with additional singularities and explain that in this setting the main result of [4] is applicable. This guarantees the existence of an arbitrary large number of generalized periodic orbits (periodic orbits with possible double collisions regularized) provided the mass ratio of the primaries is small enough.

Unsupervised Deformable Medical Image Registration via Pyramidal Residual Deformation Fields Estimation

Deformation field estimation is an important and challenging issue in many medical image registration applications. In recent years, deep learning technique has become a promising approach for simplifying registration problems, and has been gradually applied to medical image registration. However, most existing deep learning registrations do not consider the problem that when the receptive field cannot cover the corresponding features in the moving image and the fixed image, it cannot output accurate displacement values. In fact, due to the limitation of the receptive field, the 3 x 3 kernel has difficulty in covering the corresponding features at high/original resolution. Multi-resolution and multi-convolution techniques can improve but fail to avoid this problem. In this study, we constructed pyramidal feature sets on moving and fixed images and used the warped moving and fixed features to estimate their "residual" deformation field at each scale, called the Pyramidal Residual Deformation Field Estimation module (PRDFE-Module). The "total" deformation field at each scale was computed by upsampling and weighted summing all the "residual" deformation fields at all its previous scales, which can effectively and accurately transfer the deformation fields from low resolution to high resolution and is used for warping the moving features at each scale. Simulation and real brain data results show that our method improves the accuracy of the registration and the rationality of the deformation field.

An Efficient Agreement Mechanism in CapsNets By Pairwise Product

Capsule networks (CapsNets) are capable of modeling visual hierarchical relationships, which is achieved by the "routing-by-agreement" mechanism. This paper proposes a pairwise agreement mechanism to build capsules, inspired by the feature interactions of factorization machines (FMs). The proposed method has a much lower computation complexity. We further proposed a new CapsNet architecture that combines the strengths of residual networks in representing low-level visual features and CapsNets in modeling the relationships of parts to wholes. We conduct comprehensive experiments to compare the routing algorithms, including dynamic routing, EM routing, and our proposed FM agreement, based on both architectures of original CapsNet and our proposed one, and the results show that our method achieves both excellent performance and efficiency under a variety of situations.

An Investigation into the Stochasticity of Batch Whitening

Batch Normalization (BN) is extensively employed in various network architectures by performing standardization within mini-batches. A full understanding of the process has been a central target in the deep learning communities. Unlike existing works, which usually only analyze the standardization operation, this paper investigates the more general Batch Whitening (BW). Our work originates from the observation that while various whitening transformations equivalently improve the conditioning, they show significantly different behaviors in discriminative scenarios and training Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). We attribute this phenomenon to the stochasticity that BW introduces. We quantitatively investigate the stochasticity of different whitening transformations and show that it correlates well with the optimization behaviors during training. We also investigate how stochasticity relates to the estimation of population statistics during inference. Based on our analysis, we provide a framework for designing and comparing BW algorithms in different scenarios. Our proposed BW algorithm improves the residual networks by a significant margin on ImageNet classification. Besides, we show that the stochasticity of BW can improve the GAN's performance with, however, the sacrifice of the training stability.

Diversified Arbitrary Style Transfer via Deep Feature Perturbation

Image style transfer is an underdetermined problem, where a large number of solutions can satisfy the same constraint (the content and style). Although there have been some efforts to improve the diversity of style transfer by introducing an alternative diversity loss, they have restricted generalization, limited diversity and poor scalability. In this paper, we tackle these limitations and propose a simple yet effective method for diversified arbitrary style transfer. The key idea of our method is an operation called deep feature perturbation (DFP), which uses an orthogonal random noise matrix to perturb the deep image feature maps while keeping the original style information unchanged. Our DFP operation can be easily integrated into many existing WCT (whitening and coloring transform)-based methods, and empower them to generate diverse results for arbitrary styles. Experimental results demonstrate that this learning-free and universal method can greatly increase the diversity while maintaining the quality of stylization.

Varied fusion reaction probability induced by ion stopping modification in laser-driven plasma with different temperature

The dynamics of nuclear reaction in plasma is a fundamental issue in many high energy density researches, such as the astrophysical reactions and the inertial confinement fusion. The effective reaction cross-sections and ion stopping power in plasma need to be taken into account to analyze the reactivity. In this research, we have experimentally investigated the from D-D reactions from interactions between deuteron beams and deuterated polystyrene (CD) plasma, driven by two laser pulses respectively. The neutron yields, plasma density and deuteron energy loss in plasma have been measured, and the plasma temperature and deuteron stopping power have been analyzed from simulations. It is shown that, compared with a cold target, the reaction probability in plasma conditions can be enhanced or suppressed, which is ascribed to the deuteron stopping power modifications in plasma. In hotter CD plasma, the energy loss of moderate energetic deuterons reduces, which leads to higher D-D reaction probability, while the contrary happens in colder plasma. This work provides new understanding of fusion reactions in plasma environment.

A continuous contact force model for impact analysis in multibody dynamics

A new continuous contact force model for contacting problems with regular or irregular contacting surfaces and energy dissipations in multibody systems is presented and discussed in this work. The model is developed according to Hertz law and a hysteresis damping force is introduced for modeling the energy dissipation during the contact process. As it is almost impossible to obtain an analytical solution based on the system dynamic equation, an approximate dynamic equation for the collision system is proposed, achieving a good approximation of the system dynamic equation. An approximate function between deformation velocity and deformation is founded on the approximate dynamic equation, then it is utilized to calculate the energy loss due to the damping force. The model is established through modifying the original formula of the hysteresis damping parameter derived by combining the energy balance and the law of conservation of linear momentum. Numerical results of five different continuous contact models reveal the capability of our new model as well as the effect of the geometry of the contacting surfaces on the dynamic system response.

First-Order Primal-Dual Method for Nonlinear Convex Cone Programming

Nonlinear Convex Cone Programming (NCCP) problems are important and have many practical applications. In this paper, we introduces a flexible first-order primal-dual algorithm called the Variant Auxiliary Problem Principle (VAPP) for solving NCCP problems when the objective function and constraints are smooth and may be nonsmooth. Each iteration of VAPP generates a nonlinear approximation to the primal problem of an augmented Lagrangian method. The approximation incorporates both linearization and a variable distance-like function, and then the iterations of VAPP provide one decomposition property for NCCP. Motivated by recent applications in big data analysis, there has been an explosive growth in interest in the convergence rate analysis of parallel computing algorithms for large scale optimization problem. This paper proposes an iteration-based error bound and linear convergence of VAPP. Some verifiable sufficient conditions of this error bound are also discussed. For the general convex case (without error bound), we establish $O(1/t)$ convergence rate for primal suboptimality, feasibility and dual suboptimality. By adaptively setting in parameters at different iterations, we show an $O(1/t^2)$ rate for the strongly convex case. We further present Forward-Backward Splitting (FBS) formulation of VAPP method and establish the connection between VAPP and other primal-dual splitting methods. Finally, we discuss some issues in the implementation of VAPP.

$J^+$-invariants for planar two-center Stark-Zeeman systems

In this paper, we introduce the notion of planar two-center Stark- Zeeman systems and define four J+-like invariants for their periodic orbits. The construction is based on a previous construction for planar one-center Stark-Zeeman system in [Cieliebak-Frauenfelder-van Koert 2017] as well as Levi-Civita and Birkhoff regularizations. We analyze the relationship among these invariants and show that they are largely independent, based on a new construction called interior connected sum.

Lambert's theorem and projective dynamics

We prove that the classical Lambert theorem about the elapsed time on an arc of Keplerian orbit extends without change to the Kepler problem on a space of constant curvature. We prove that the Hooke problem has a property similar to Lambert's theorem, which also extends to the spaces of constant curvature.

Research into the sampling methods of digital beam position measurement

BPM (Beam Position Measurement) system is one of the most important beam diagnostic instruments in accelerators. A fully digital BPM (DBPM) has been designed for SSRF (Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility). As Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) is one crucial part in the DBPM system, the sampling methods should be studied to achieve optimum performance. We implemented different sampling modes and compared them through tests. Meanwhile, long term variation among four sampling channels is another concern, which would introduce errors in beam position measurement. We designed an interleaved distribution scheme to address this issue. To evaluate these sampling methods, we conducted commissioning tests with the beam in SSRF. Test results indicate that with proper sampling methods, a turn-by-turn (TBT) position resolution better than 1 um is achieved, and the slow-acquisition (SA) position resolution is enhanced from 4.28 μm to 0.17 μm successfully with interleaved distribution applied, both beyond requirement.

Real-Time FPGA-based Digital Signal Processing and Correction for a Small Animal PET

Small animal Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is dedicated to small animal imaging, which requires high position and energy precision, as well as good flexibility and efficiency of the electronics. This paper presents the design of a digital signal processing logic for a marmoset brain PET system based on LYSO crystal arrays, SiPMs, and the resistive network readout method. We implement 32-channel signal processing in a single Xilinx Artix-7 Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The logic is designed to support four online modes which are regular data processing mode, flood map construction mode, energy spectrum construction mode, and raw data mode. Several functions are integrated, including two-dimensional (2D) raw position calculation, crystal locating, events filtering, and synchronization detection. Furthermore, a series of online corrections is also integrated, such as photon peak correction to 511 keV and time measurement result correction with crystal granularity. A Gigabit Ethernet interface is utilized for data transfer, Look-Up Tables (LUTs) configuration, and command issuing. The pipeline logic works at 125 MHz with a signal processing capability beyond the required data rate of 1,000,000 events/s/channel. A series of initial tests are conducted. The results indicate that the logic design meets the application requirement.

A multichannel front end ASIC for PMT readout in LHAASO WCDA

Time and charge measurements over a large dynamic range from 1 Photo Electron (P.E.) to 4000 P.E. are required for the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), which is one of the key components in the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). To simplify the circuit structure of the readout electronics, a front end ASIC was designed. Based on the charge-to-time conversion method, the output pulse width of the ASIC corresponds to the input signal charge information while time information of the input signal is picked off through a discriminator, and thus the time and charge information can be digitized simultaneously using this ASIC and a following Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC). To address the challenge of mismatch among the channels observed in the previous prototype version, this work presents approaches for analyzing the problem and optimizing the circuits. A new version of the ASIC was designed and fabricated in the GLOBALFOUNDRIES 0.35 um CMOS technology, which integrates 6 channels (corresponding to the readout of the 3 PMTs) in each chip. The test results indicate that the mismatch between the channels is significantly reduced to less than 20% using the proposed approach. The time measurement resolution better than 300 ps is achieved, and the charge measurement resolution is better than 10% at 1 P.E., and 1% at 4000 P.E., which meets the application requirements.

Prototype design of singles processing unit for the small animal PET

Position Emission Tomography (PET) is an advanced clinical diagnostic imaging technique for nuclear medicine. Small animal PET is increasingly uesd for studying the animal model of disease, new drugs and new therapies. A prototype of Singles Processing Unit (SPU) for a small animal PET system was designed to obtain the time, energy, and position information. The energy and position is actually calculated through high precison charge measurement, which is based on amplification, shaping, A/D conversion and area calculation in digital signal processing domian. Analysis and simulations were also conducted to optimize the key parameters in system design. Initial tests indicate that the charge and time precision is better than 0.3% FWHM and 350 ps FWHM respectively, while the position resolution is better than 0.35% FWHM. Commination tests of the SPU prototype with the PET detector indicate that the system time precision is better than 2.5 ns, while the flood map and energy spectra concored well with the expected.

A Time-to-Digital Converter-based Correction Method for Charge Measurement through Area Integration

A high-precision charge measurement can be achieved by the area integration of a digitized quasi-Gaussian signal after the signal passes through the shaper and analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The charge measurement contains an error due to the uncertainty of the first sampled point of a signal waveform. To reduce the error, we employ a time-to-digital converter (TDC) to measure the uncertainty precisely, and we design correction algorithms to improve the resolution of the charge measurement. This work includes analysis and simulations of the proposed algorithms and implementation of them in an FPGA device. Besides, the tests are also conducted to evaluate the performance of the correction method. Test results indicate that the resolution of the charge measurement is successfully improved from 0.231% to 0.126% by using a signal from the shaping circuit (with the amplitude of 2 V, and leading and trailing edges of about 80 ns and 280 ns, respectively) digitized at the sampling rate of 62.5 Msps.

Extensive beam test study of prototype MRPCs for the T0 detector at the CSR external-target experiment

The CSR External-target Experiment (CEE) will be the first large-scale nuclear physics experiment device at the Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) of the Heavy-Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) in China. A new T0 detector has been proposed to measure the multiplicity, angular distribution and timing information of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions at the target region. Multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology was chosen as part of the construction of the T0 detector, which provides precision event collision times (T0) and collision geometry information. The prototype was tested with hadron and heavy-ion beams to study its performance. By comparing the experimental results with a Monte Carlo simulation, the time resolution of the MRPCs are found to be $\sim$ 50 ps or better. The timing performance of the T0 detector, including both detector and readout electronics, we found to fulfil the requirements of the CEE.

Real-Time Phase Correction based on FPGA in the Beam Position and Phase Measurement System

A fully digital beam position and phase measurement (BPPM) system was designed for the linear accelerator (LINAC) in Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (ADS) in China. Phase information is obtained from the summed signals from four pick-ups of the Beam Position Monitor (BPM). Considering that the delay variations of different analog circuit channels would introduce phase measurement errors, we propose a new method to tune the digital waveforms of four channels before summation and achieve real-time error correction. The process is based on the vector rotation method and implemented within one single Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. Tests were conducted to evaluate this correction method and the results indicate that a phase correction precision better than +/- 0.3 degree over the dynamic range from -60 dBm to 0 dBm is achieved.

Readout Electronics of T0 Detector in the External Target Experiment of CSR in HIRFL

T0 detector, based on Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) technology, is one of the key components in the External Target Experiment. Through precision measurements of the MRPC signals, timing of the beam impact on target can be obtained and used as the start time for other detectors. A readout electronics system was designed for the T0 detector. Based on the NINO ASIC, front-end-electronics (FEE) circuits which can achieve high precision leading-edge discrimination and Charge-to-Time Conversion (QTC) were designed for the internal and external MRPCs of the T0 detector. The output pulse of the FEE is then digitized by high precision time digitization modules with Time-to-Digital Converters (TDCs), trigger matching and other control logic integrated within Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. To evaluate the functionality and performance, we also conducted a series of tests of the electronics. Results indicate that the system functions well and the time precision of the electronics is better than 21 ps, which satisfies the application requirement.
