Bulk Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Kondo Insulator SmB6

Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been intensely studied in recent years as a potential candidate of a strongly correlated topological insulator. One of the most exciting phenomena observed in SmB6 is the clear quantum oscillations appearing in magnetic torque at a low temperature despite the insulating behavior in resistance. These quantum oscillations show multiple frequencies and varied effective masses. The origin of quantum oscillation is, however, still under debate with evidence of both two-dimensional Fermi surfaces and three-dimensional Fermi surfaces. Here, we carry out angle-resolved torque magnetometry measurements in a magnetic field up to 45 T and a temperature range down to 40 mK. With the magnetic field rotated in the (010) plane, the quantum oscillation frequency of the strongest oscillation branch shows a four-fold rotational symmetry. However, in the angular dependence of the amplitude of the same branch, this four-fold symmetry is broken and, instead, a twofold symmetry shows up, which is consistent with the prediction of a two-dimensional Lifshitz-Kosevich model. No deviation of Lifshitz-Kosevich behavior is observed down to 40 mK. Our results suggest the existence of multiple light-mass surface states in SmB6, with their mobility significantly depending on the surface disorder level.

New cosmological constraints with extended-Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR14 quasar sample

We update the constraints on the cosmological parameters by adopting the Planck data released in 2015 and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements including the new DR14 quasar sample measurement at redshift $z=1.52$, and we conclude that the based six-parameter $Λ$CDM model is preferred. Exploring some extensions to the $Λ$CDM models, we find that the equation of state of dark energy reads $w=-1.036\pm 0.056$ in the $w$CDM model, the effective relativistic degrees of freedom in the Universe is $N_\text{eff}=3.09_{-0.20}^{+0.18}$ in the $N_\text{eff}+Λ$CDM model and the spatial curvature parameter is $Ω_k=(1.8\pm1.9)\times 10^{-3}$ in the $Ω_k+Λ$CDM model at $68\%$ confidence level (C.L.), and the $95\%$ C.L. upper bounds on the sum of three active neutrinos masses are $\sum m_ν<0.16$ eV for the normal hierarchy (NH) and $\sum m_ν<0.19$ eV for the inverted hierarchy (IH) with $Δχ^2\equiv χ^2_\text{NH}-χ^2_\text{IH}=-1.25$.

Invariant Tori of Impulsive Duffing-Type Equations via KAM Technique

A method via the KAM technique is introduced to study the existence of invariant tori and quasiperiodic solutions for impulsive Duffing-type equations with time period 1. Basing on several planar symplectic homeomorphisms and some estimates of impulsive perturbations under each symplectic homeomorphisms, we prove via the Moser's twist theorem the boundedness (Lagrange stability) and the existence of an invariant circle for the equation with area-preserving impulsive terms. And this invariant circle having any rotation number $ω>ω_0$ with some $ω_0>0$, so we obtain also that the solutions starting from the circle are quasiperiodic with frequencies $ω$ and 1.

Constraint on the abundance of primordial black holes in dark matter from Planck data

We use Planck data released in 2015 to constrain the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs) in dark matter in two different reionization models (one is the instantaneous reionization and the other is the asymmetric reionization), and significantly improve the upper limits on the abundance of PBHs from WMAP 3-year data by around two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, these new limits imply that the event rates of mergers of PBH binaries (Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$) are less than $0.002$ for $M_\text{pbh}=30M_\odot$, $5$ for $M_\text{pbh}=10M_\odot$ and $2000$ for $M_\text{pbh}=2M_\odot$ at $95\%$ confidence level (C.L.), and thus GW150914 seems very unlikely produced by the merger of a PBH binary.

Method for Transferring High-Mobility CVD-Grown Graphene with Perfluoropolymers

The transfer of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using amorphous polymers represents a widely implemented method for graphene-based electronic device fabrication. However, the most commonly used polymer, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), leaves a residue on the graphene that limits the mobility. Here we report a method for graphene transfer and patterning that employs a perfluoropolymer---Hyflon---as a transfer handle and to protect graphene against contamination from photoresists or other polymers. CVD-grown graphene transferred this way onto LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures is atomically clean, with high mobility (~30,000 cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$) near the Dirac point at 2 K and clear, quantized Hall and magneto-resistance. Local control of the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfacial metal-insulator transition---through the graphene---is preserved with this transfer method. The use of perfluoropolymers such as Hyflon with CVD-grown graphene and other 2D materials can readily be implemented with other polymers or photoresists.

Rotational Symmetry Breaking in a Trigonal superconductor Nb-doped Bi2Se3

The search for unconventional superconductivity has been focused on materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and unique crystal lattices. Doped bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$) is a strong candidate given the topological insulator nature of the parent compound and its triangular lattice. The coupling between the physical properties in the superconducting state and its underlying crystal symmetry is a crucial test for unconventional superconductivity. In this paper, we report direct evidence that the superconducting magnetic response couples strongly to the underlying 3-fold crystal symmetry in the recently discovered superconductor with trigonal crystal structure, niobium (Nb)-doped bismuth selenide (Bi$_2$Se$_3$). More importantly, we observed that the magnetic response is greatly enhanced along one preferred direction spontaneously breaking the rotational symmetry. Instead of a simple 3-fold crystalline symmetry, the superconducting hysteresis loop shows dominating 2-fold and 4-fold symmetry. This observation confirms the breaking of the rotational symmetry and indicates the presence of nematic order in the superconducting ground state of Nb-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Further, heat capacity measurements display an exponential decay in superconducting state and suggest that there is no line node in the superconducting gap. These observations provide strong evidence of odd-parity topological superconductivity.

U.S. Religious Landscape on Twitter

Religiosity is a powerful force shaping human societies, affecting domains as diverse as economic growth or the ability to cope with illness. As more religious leaders and organizations as well as believers start using social networking sites (e.g., Twitter, Facebook), online activities become important extensions to traditional religious rituals and practices. However, there has been lack of research on religiosity in online social networks. This paper takes a step toward the understanding of several important aspects of religiosity on Twitter, based on the analysis of more than 250k U.S. users who self-declared their religions/belief, including Atheism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. Specifically, (i) we examine the correlation of geographic distribution of religious people between Twitter and offline surveys. (ii) We analyze users' tweets and networks to identify discriminative features of each religious group, and explore supervised methods to identify believers of different religions. (iii) We study the linkage preference of different religious groups, and observe a strong preference of Twitter users connecting to others sharing the same religion.

Doping-Dependent Raman Resonance in the Model High-Temperature Superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d

We study the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d with electronic Raman scattering and optical ellipsometry over a wide doping range. The resonant Raman condition which enhances the scattering cross section of "two-magnon" excitations is found to change strongly with doping, and it corresponds to a rearrangement of inter-band optical transitions in the 1-3 eV range seen by ellipsometry. This unexpected change of the resonance condition allows us to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between Raman and x-ray detection of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting cuprates. Intriguingly, the strongest variation occurs across the doping level where the antinodal superconducting gap reaches its maximum.
