Hole-doping-induced changes in the electronic structure of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ : soft x-ray photoemission and absorption study of epitaxial thin films

We have studied the electronic structure of epitaxially grown thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ by {\it in-situ} photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The Fe 2$p$ and valence-band PES spectra and the O $1s$ XAS spectra of LaFeO$_3$ have been successfully reproduced by configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation and, except for the satellite structure, by band-structure calculation. From the shift of the binding energies of core levels, the chemical potential was found to be shifted downward as $x$ was increased. Among the three peaks in the valence-band spectra of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$, the peak nearest to the Fermi level ($E_F$), due to the ``$e_{g}$ band'', was found to move toward $E_F$ and became weaker as $x$ was increased, whereas the intensity of the peak just above $E_F$ in the O $1s$ XAS spectra increased with $x$. The gap or pseudogap at $E_F$ was seen for all values of $x$. These results indicate that changes in the spectral line shape around $E_F$ are dominated by spectral weight transfer from below to above $E_F$ across the gap and are therefore highly non-rigid-band-like.

Stability of a cosmological model with dynamical cancellation of vacuum energy

The stability of cosmological solutions in the recently suggested specific mechanism of dynamical compensation of vacuum energy is studied. It is found that the solutions in the original version lead to cosmological singularity which could be reached in final (and short) time. A modification of the interaction of the compensating field with gravity is suggested which allows to escape such singularity. It is shown that generic cosmological solution in this model tends to the Friedmann expansion regime even starting from initially large vacuum energy.

MSSM curvaton in the gauge-mediated SUSY breaking

We study the curvaton scenario using the MSSM flat directions in the gauge-mediated SUSY breaking model. We find that the fluctuations in the both radial and phase directions can be responsible for the density perturbations in the universe through the curvaton mechanism. Although it has been considered difficult to have a successful curvaton scenario with the use of those flat directions, it is overcome by taking account of the finite temperature effects, which induce a negative thermal logarithmic term in the effective potential of the flat direction.

Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Monopoles in Momentum-Space

Efforts to find the magnetic monopole in real space have been made in cosmic rays and in accelerators, but up to now there is no firm evidence for its existence due to the very heavy mass $\sim 10^{16}$GeV. However, we show that the magnetic monopole can appear in the crystal-momentum space of solids in the accessible low energy region ($\sim0.1-1$eV) in the context of the anomalous Hall effect. We report experimental results together with first-principles calculations on the ferromagnetic crystal SrRuO$_3$ that provide evidence for the magnetic monopole in the crystal-momentum space.

Partially ionizing the universe by decaying particles

We show that UV photons produced by decaying particles can partially reionize the universe and explain the large optical depth observed by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. Together with UV fluxes from early formed stars and quasars, it is possible that the universe is fully ionized at z \lesssim 6 and partially ionized at z \gtrsim 6 as observed by Sloan Digital Sky Survey for large parameter space of the decaying particle. This scenario will be discriminated by future observations, especially by the EE polarization power spectrum of cosmic microwave background radiation.

Modeling and simulation of polycrystalline ZnO thin-film transistors

Thin film transistors (TFTs) made of transparent channel semiconductors such as ZnO are of great technological importance, because their insensitivity to visible light makes device structures simple. In fact, several demonstrations are made on ZnO TFT achieving reasonably good field effect mobilities of 1-10 cm2/Vs, but reveal insufficient device performances probably due to the presence of dense grain boundaries. We have modeled grain boundaries in ZnO thin film transistors (TFTs) and performed device simulation using a two-dimensional device simulator for understanding the grain boundary effects on the device performance. Actual polycrystalline ZnO TFT modeling is commenced with considering a single grain boundary in the middle of the TFT channel formulating with a Gaussian defect distribution localized in the grain boundary. A double Shottky barrier is formed in the grain boundary and its barrier height are analyzed as functions of defect density and gate bias. The simulation is extended to the TFTs with many grain boundaries to quantitatively analyze the potential profiles developed along the channel. One of the big contrasts of polycrystalline ZnO TFT compared with a polycrystalline Si TFT is that much smaller nanoscaled grain size induces heavy overlap of double Shottky barriers. Through the simulation, we can estimate the total trap state density localized in the grain boundaries for a polycrystalline ZnO by knowing apparent mobility and grain size in the device.

Can modified gravity explain accelerated cosmic expansion?

We show that the recently suggested explanations of cosmic acceleration by the modification of gravity at small curvature suffer violent instabilities and strongly disagree with the known properties of gravitational interactions.

Carrier induced ferromagnetism in room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor rutile TiO2 doped with Co

A ferromagnetic semiconductor, rutile (Ti,Co)O2, exhibits anomalous Hall effect at room temperature. Strong dependence of the anomalous Hall effect, as well as the magneto-optic response, on the carrier concentration suggests carrier induced ferromagnetism in this compound. Both ferromagnetic responses are caused by the charge carriers at the band edge of host semiconductor, indicating possibilities of spintronics devices operable at room temperature.

Realistic cosmological model with dynamical cancellation of vacuum energy

We propose a model with a compensating scalar field whose back reaction to the cosmological curvature cancels possible vacuum energy density down to the terms of the order of the time dependent critical energy density. Thus the model simultaneously solves the mystery of the compensation of vacuum energy with the accuracy of 120 orders of magnitude and explains existence of the observed dark energy. At an early stage the suggested cosmological model might experience exponential expansion without an additional inflaton field.

The Earliest Epoch of Reionisation in the Standard $Λ$CDM Model

We show that the earliest possible reionisation of the Universe is approximately at $z\simeq 13.5$ and the optical depth is $τ\simeq 0.17$ in the conventionally accepted $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model with adiabatic fluctuations of a flat spectrum normalised to the cosmic microwave background. This is consistent with the reionisation found by WMAP (the apparently earlier reionisation epoch of the WMAP is ascribed to the adoption of the instantaneous reionisation approximation), i.e., the WMAP result is realised only if reionisation of the universe takes place nearly at the maximal efficiency in the $Λ$CDM model.

Inflation with a running spectral index in supergravity

The first year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe data favors primordial adiabatic fluctuation with a running spectral index with $\ns >1$ on a large scale and $\ns <1$ on a smaller scale. The model building of inflation that predicts perturbations with such a spectrum is a challenge, because most models predict fluctuations with either $\ns >1$ (hybrid inflation) or $\ns <1$ (new, chaotic, or topological inflation). We give a sensible particle physics model in supergravity that accommodates the desired running of the spectral index using double inflation.

Field-Effect Transistor on SrTiO3 with sputtered Al2O3 Gate Insulator

A field-effect transistor that employs a perovskite-type SrTiO3 single crystal as the semiconducting channel is revealed to function as n-type accumulation-mode device with characteristics similar to that of organic FET's. The device was fabricated at room temperature by sputter-deposition of amorphous Al2O3 films as a gate insulator on the SrTiO3 substrate. The field-effect(FE) mobility is 0.1cm2/Vs and on-off ratio exceeds 100 at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the FE mobility down to 2K shows a thermal-activation-type behavior with an activation energy of 0.6eV.

Exploration of oxide-based diluted magnetic semiconductors toward transparent spintronics

A review is given for the recent progress of research in the field of oxide-based diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), which was triggered by combinatorial discovery of transparent ferromagnet. The possible advantages of oxide semiconductor as a host of DMS are described in comparison with conventional compound semiconductors. Limits and problems for identifying novel ferromagnetic DMS are described in view of recent reports in this field. Several characterization techniques are proposed in order to eliminate unidentified ferromagnetism of oxide-based DMS (UFO). Perspectives and possible devices are also given.

Affleck-Dine mechanism with negative thermal logarithmic potential

We investigate whether the Affleck-Dine (AD) mechanism works when the contribution of the two-loop thermal correction to the potential is negative in the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. The AD field is trapped far away from the origin by the negative thermal correction for a long time until the temperature of the universe becomes low enough. The most striking feature is that the Hubble parameter becomes much smaller than the mass scale of the radial component of the AD field, during the trap. Then, the amplitude of the AD field decreases so slowly that the baryon number is not fixed even after the onset of radial oscillation. The resultant baryon asymmetry crucially depends on whether the Hubble parameter, $H$, is larger than the mass scale of the phase component of the AD field, $M_θ$, at the beginning of oscillation. If $H < M_θ$ holds, the formation of Q balls plays an essential role to determine the baryon number, which is found to be washed out due to the nonlinear dynamics of Q-ball formation. On the other hand, if $H > M_θ$ holds, it is found that the dynamics of Q-ball formation does not affect the baryon asymmetry, and that it is possible to generate the right amount of the baryon asymmetry.

Constraints on the Star Formation Rate from Supernova Relic Neutrino Observations

We discuss the implication of the observation of supernova relic neutrinos on the study of the star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies. The limit recently obtained at Super-Kamiokande (SK) is already marginally significant: The SFR we derived $ψ(t_0)<0.040M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-3}$(at a 90% CL) is about twice the SFR estimated from radio observations, and five times the rate from H$α$ allowing for uncertainties in the model supernova neutrino flux.

I-balls

We find that there exists a soliton-like solution ``I-ball'' in theories of a real scalar field if the scalar potential satisfies appropriate conditions. Although the I-ball does not have any topological or global U(1) charges, its stability is ensured by the adiabatic invariance for the oscillating field.

Remarks on the Cosmic Density of Degenerate Neutrinos

We re-investigate the evolution of the strongly degenerate neutrinos in the early universe. With the larger degeneracy, the neutrino number freezes at higher temperatures because the neutrino annihilation rate decreases. We consider very large degeneracy so large that the neutrino number freezes before events in which the particle degrees of freedom in the universe decrease (e.g. the muon annihilation and the quark-hadron phase transition). In such a case, the degeneracy by the time of nucleosynthesis becomes smaller than the initial degeneracy. We calculate how much it decreases from the initial value on the basis of the conservation of the neutrino number and the total entropy. We found a large drop in the degeneracy but it is not large enough to affect the current constraints on the neutrino degeneracy from BBN and CMBR.

Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy of Anatase TiO2 Doped with Co

Magneto-optical spectroscopy of a transparent ferromagnetic semiconductor, anatase TiO2 doped with Co, is carried out at room temperature. A large magneto-optical response with ferromagnetic field dependence is observed throughout from ultraviolet to visible range and increases with increasing Co content or carrier concentration. The magnitude of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) per unit thickness has a peak around the absorption edge such a huge value of ~10400 degree/cm at 3.57 eV for a 10 mol% Co-doped specimen. Although the results are not sufficient to prove that the ferromagnetism is in the ordinary framework of diluted magnetic semiconductors, the coexistence of Co impurity and mobile carrier is shown to transform the band structure of host TiO2 to generate ferromagnetism.
