Model-Independent Determination of CP Violation from Angular Distributions in Higgs Boson Decays to WW and ZZ at the Photon Collider

The model-independent determination of the Higgs-boson CP properties at the Photon Collider at TESLA has been studied in detail, for masses between 200 and 350 GeV, using realistic luminosity spectra and detector simulation. We consider a generic model with the CP violating Higgs tensor couplings to gauge bosons. We introduce a new variable describing angular distributions of the secondary WW and ZZ decay products which is very sensitive to the CP properties of the Higgs-boson. Understanding of the detector performance turns out to be crucial, as the influence of the acceptance corrections is similar to the effects of CP violation. From the combined measurement of invariant mass distributions and various angular distributions the phase describing a CP violation can be determined to about 50 mrad after one year of Photon Collider running.

Localization Properties of Quantized Magnetostatic Modes in Nanocubes

We investigate the dynamical properties of a system of interacting magnetic dipoles disposed in sites of an sc lattice and forming a cubic-shaped sample of size determined by the cube edge length (N-1)a (a being the lattice constant, N representing the number of dipolar planes). The dipolar field resulting from the dipole-dipole interactions is calculated numerically in points of the axis connecting opposite cube face centers (central axis) by collecting individual contributions to this field coming from each of the N atomic planes perpendicular to the central axis. The applied magnetic field is assumed to be oriented along the central axis, magnetizing uniformly the whole sample, all the dipoles being aligned parallelly in the direction of the applied field. The frequency spectrum of magnetostatic waves propagating in the direction of the applied field is found numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion including the local (nonhomogeneous) dipolar field component; the mode amplitude spatial distributions (mode profiles) are depicted as well. It is found that only the two energetically highest modes have bulk-extended character. All the remaining modes are of localized nature; more precisely, the modes forming the lower part of the spectrum are localized in the subsurface region, while the upper-spectrum modes are localized around the sample center. We show that the mode localization regions narrow down as the cube size, N, increases (we investigated the range of N=21 to N=101), and in sufficiently large cubes one obtains practically only center-localized and surface-localized magnetostatic modes.

CJK-Improved 5 Flavour LO Parton Distributions in the Real Photon

Radiatively generated, LO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in the real, unpolarized photon, improved in respect to our previous paper, are presented. We perform three global fits to the F_2^gamma data, using the LO DGLAP evolution equation. We improve the treatment of the strong coupling running and used lower values of Lambda_QCD, as we have found that the too high values adopted in the previous work caused the high chi^2 of the fits. In addition to the modified FFNS_CJKL model, referred to as FFNS_CJK 1 we analyse a FFNS_CJK 2 model in which we take into account the resolved-photon heavy-quark contribution. New CJK model with an improved high-x behavior of the F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) is proposed. Finally, in the case of the CJK model we abandon the valence sum rule imposed on the VMD input densities. New fits give chi^2 per degree of freedom about 0.25 better than the old results. All features of the CJKL model, such as the realistic heavy-quark distributions, good description of the LEP data on the Q^2 dependence of the F_2^gamma and on F_2,c^gamma are preserved. Moreover we present results of an analysis of the uncertainties of the CJK parton distributions due to the experimental errors. It is based on the Hessian method used for the proton and very recently applied for the photon by one of us. Parton and structure function parametrizations of the best fits in both FFNS_CJK and CJK approaches are made accessible. For the CJK model we provide also sets of test parametrizations which allow for calculation of uncertainties of any physical value depending on the real photon parton densities.

A New 5 Flavour NLO Analysis and Parametrizations of Parton Distributions of the Real Photon

New, radiatively generated, NLO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in a real, unpolarized photon are presented. We perform three global fits, based on the NLO DGLAP evolution equations for Q^2>1 GeV^2, to all the available structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) data. As in our previous LO analysis we utilize two theoretical approaches. Two models, denoted as FFNS_{CJK}1 & 2 NLO, adopt the so-called Fixed Flavour-Number Scheme for calculation of the heavy-quark contributions to F_2^gamma(x,Q^2), the CJK NLO model applies the ACOT(chi) scheme. We examine the results of our fits by a comparison with the LEP data for the Q^2 dependence of the F_2^gamma, averaged over various x-regions, and the F_2,c^gamma. Grid parametrizations of the parton densities for all fits are provided.

CP Studies of the Higgs Sector

The CP structure of the Higgs sector will be of great interest to future colliders. The measurement of the CP properties of candidate Higgs particles will be essential in order to distinguish models of electroweak symmetry breaking, and to discover or place limits on CP-violation in the Higgs sector. In this report we briefly summarize various methods of determining the CP properties of Higgs bosons at different colliders and identify areas where more study is required. We also provide an example of a synergy between the LHC, an e+e- Linear Collider and a Photon Collider, for the examination of CP-violation in a Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model.

CJK- Improved LO Parton Distributions in the Real Photon and Their Experimental Uncertainties

A new analysis of the radiatively generated, LO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in the real, unpolarized photon, improved in respect to our paper [1], is presented. We perform four new global fits to the experimental data for F2^gamma, two using a standard FFNS approach and two based on ACOT(chi) scheme [2], leading to the FFNS(CJK) and CJK models. We also present the analysis of the uncertainties of the new CJK 2 parton distributions due to the experimental errors, the very first such analysis performed for the photon. This analysis is based on the Hessian method, for a comparison for chosen cross-sections we use also the Lagrange method.

Measurement of the Higgs-boson CP properties using decays into WW and ZZ at the Photon Collider

Higgs-boson production at the Photon Collider at TESLA is studied for masses from 180 to 350 GeV, using realistic luminosity spectra and detector simulation. Parity of the SM Higgs-boson can be verified from the measurement of the interference effects in the W+ W- decay channel and of the angular correlations in the decays of W+ W- and ZZ pairs. SM-like Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM II) and model with the generic higgs couplings are considered.

Measurement of the MSSM Higgs-bosons production in gamma gamma -> A,H -> b bbar at the Photon Collider at TESLA

Results from a realistic simulation of the heavy MSSM Higgs-bosons A and H production, gamma gamma -> A,H -> b bbar, at the Photon Collider at TESLA are reported. In the scenario where a light SM-like Higgs boson h exists, we study (following M. Muehlleitner et al.) Higgs bosons A and H for masses M_A=200,250,300,350 GeV and tan(beta)=7. This scenario corresponds to parameters region not accessible at LHC or at the first stage of the e^+ e^- collider. NLO estimation of background, analysis of overlaying events, realistic b-tagging and corrections for escaping neutrinos were performed. The statistical precision of the cross-section measurement is estimated to be 8-20%.

Light Higgs-boson production at the Photon Collider at TESLA with an improved background analysis

Measurement of the Gamma(h -> gamma gamma)Br(h -> b bbar) at the Photon Collider at TESLA is studied for the Standard Model Higgs boson with mass of 120 to 160 GeV. The NLO estimation of background, analysis of overlaying events, realistic b-tagging and corrections for escaping neutrinos were performed. We find that for M_h = 120-160 GeV the Gamma(h -> gamma gamma)Br(h -> b bbar) can be measured with a statistical accuracy of 2-7% after one year of the Photon Collider running.

A New 5-Flavour LO Analysis and Parametrization of Parton Distributions in the Real Photon

New, radiatively generated, LO quark (u,d,s,c,b) and gluon densities in a real, unpolarized photon are presented. We perform a global 3-parameter fit, based on LO DGLAP evolution equations, to all available data for the structure function F2^gamma(x,Q^2). We adopt a new theoretical approach called ACOT(chi), originally introduced for the proton, to deal with the heavy-quark thresholds. This defines our basic model (CJKL model), which gives a very good description of the experimental data on F2^gamma(x,Q^2), for both Q^2 and x dependences. For comparison we perform a standard fit using the Fixed Flavour-Number Scheme (FFNS_CJKL model), updated with respect to the previous fits of this type. We show the superiority of the CJKL fit over the FFNS_CJKL one and other LO fits to the F2^gamma(x,Q^2) data. The CJKL model gives also the best description of the LEP data on the Q^2 dependence of the F2^gamma, averaged over various x-regions, and the F_2,c^gamma, which were not used directly in the fit. Finally, a simple analytic parametrization of the resulting parton densities obtained with the CJKL model is given.

The SM Higgs-boson production in gamma gamma -> h -> bb at the Photon Collider at TESLA

Measuring the Gamma(h -> gamma gamma)Br(h -> bb) decay at the photon collider at TESLA is studied for a Standard Model Higgs boson of mass m_h = 120 GeV. The main background due to the process gamma gamma -> QQ(g), where Q = b,c, is estimated using the NLO QCD program (G. Jikia); the results obtained are compared with the LO estimate. Using a realistic luminosity spectrum and performing a detector simulation, we find that Gamma(h -> gamma gamma)Br(h -> bb) can be measured with an accuracy better than 2% after one year of photon collider running.

Two-photon Width and Phase Measurement from the SM Higgs Decays into WW and ZZ

Production of the Standard Model Higgs-boson at the photon collider at TESLA is studied for the Higgs-boson masses above 170 GeV. By reconstructing WW and ZZ final states, not only the h to gamma-gamma partial width but also the phase of the scattering amplitude can be measured. This opens a new window onto the precise determination of the Higgs-boson couplings.

Study of the Higgs-boson decays into WW and ZZ at the Photon Collider

Production of the Standard Model Higgs-boson at the Photon Collider at TESLA is studied for the Higgs-boson masses above 150 GeV. Simulation of signal and background processes takes into account realistic luminosity spectra and detector effects. In the considered mass range, large interference effects are expected in the W+W- decay channel. By reconstructing W+W- and ZZ final states, not only the h->gamma gamma partial width can be measured, but also the relative phase of the scattering amplitude. This opens a new window for the precise determination of the Higgs-boson couplings. Models with heavy, fourth-generation fermions and with enlarged Higgs sector (2HDM (II)) are considered.

Reach of future colliders in probing the structure of the photon

A comparison of the potentials of ep and e^+e^-$machines to probe the structure of the photon is performed. In particular, the kinematic reach of a proposed future ep facility, THERA, is compared with those of current colliders, LEP and HERA, and with the proposed linear collider, TESLA. THERA like HERA will use a proton beam of 920 GeV but with an increased electron beam energy of 250 GeV allowing higher scales, Q^2, and lower values of parton momentum fraction in the photon, x_γ, to be probed.

Heavy quark photoproduction at THERA

Measurements of heavy quark production at a possible future $ep$ facility, THERA, would provide valuable information on the structure of the photon. QCD cross-section predictions are made at LO for both charm and beauty production and their sensitivity to current parametrisations of the photon parton densities is investigated.
