Substrate-induced strain effects on Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films

We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport, and magnetization of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films grown on LaAlO_{3}, NdGaO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO_{3}) and tensile (NdGaO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different crystallographic symmetries than the bulk material, and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-- as opposed to tensile-- strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdGaO_{3}, which is the substrate that provides the least amount of nominal and measured, but tensile, strain. This result suggests the importance of the role played by the Mn--O--Mn bond angles in the formation of charge and orbital ordering at low temperatures. Finally, in the film grown on LaAlO_{3}, a connection between the lattice distortion associated with orbital ordering and the onset of antiferromagnetism is reported.

Strain driven charge-ordered state in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$

We present evidence for the coexistence of ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered insulating phases in strained thin films of La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ at low temperatures. Such a phase separated state is confirmed using low temperature magnetic force microscopy and magnetotransport measurements. This phase separated state is not observed in the bulk form of this compound and is caused by the structural inhomogeneities due to the non-uniform distribution of strain in the film. The strain weakens the low temperature ferromagnetic metallic state and a charge ordered insulator is formed at the high strain regions. The slow dynamics of the transport properties of the mixed phase is illustrated by measurements of the long time scale relaxation of the electrical resistance.

Evidence for small or intermediate-size polarons in the ferromagnetic state of manganites

Oxygen-isotope effects on the intrinsic resistivity have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. We found that the residual resistivity ρ_{o} increases by about 15(3)% upon replacing ^{16}O by ^{18}O. This provides strong evidence for the presence of small or intermediate-size polarons in the metallic ferromagnetic state. Furthermore, the temperature dependent part of the resistivity at low temperatures consists of an AT^{4.5} term contributed from 2-magnon scattering, and a Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) term which arises from scattering by a soft optical phonon mode. The absolute magnitudes of the coefficient A and the phonon frequency \hbarω_{s} for both isotope samples are in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions.

Evidence for the immobile bipolaron formation in the paramagnetic state of the magnetoresistive manganites

Recent research suggests that the charge carriers in the paramagnetic state of the magnetoresistive manganites are small polarons. Here we report studies of the oxygen-isotope effects on the intrinsic resistivity and thermoelectric power in several ferromagnetic manganites. The precise measurements of these isotope effects allow us to make a quantitative data analysis. Our results do not support a simple small-polaron model, but rather provide compelling evidence for the presence of small immobile bipolarons, i.e., pairs of small polarons. Since the bipolarons in the manganites are immobile, the present result alone appears not to give a positive support to the bipolaronic superconductivity theory for the copper-based perovskites.

Metal-insulator transition in CMR materials

We report on resistivity measurements in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films in order to elucidate the underlying mechanism for the CMR behavior. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of quantum phase transition ideas to study the nature of the metal-insulator transition in manganese oxides. Resistivity curves as functions of magnetization for various temperatures show the absence of scaling behavior expected in a continuous quantum phase transition, which leads us to conclude that the observed metal-insulator transition is most likely a finite temperature crossover phenomenon.

Oxygen isotope effects in high-quality thin films of manganites: Quantitative constraints on the physics of manganites

Oxygen isotope effects on the transport properties have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. In the paramagnetic state, the resistivity can be well fitted by ρ(T) = (A/\sqrt{T})\exp(E_ρ/k_{B}T) with the parameters A and E_{a} depending strongly on the oxygen isotope mass. The resistivity below 80 K almost perfectly follows ρ= ρ_{o}+ Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbarω_{s}/k_{B} \sim 100 K. Both ρ_{o} and B increase by about 15(3)% upon raplacing $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O. The results provide quantitative constraints on the basic physics of manganites.

Two-phase behavior in strained thin films of hole-doped manganites

We present a study of the effect of biaxial strain on the electrical and magnetic properties of thin films of manganites. We observe that manganite films grown under biaxial compressive strain exhibit island growth morphology which leads to a non-uniform distribution of the strain. Transport and magnetic properties of these films suggest the coexistence of two different phases, a metallic ferromagnet and an insulating antiferromagnet. We suggest that the high strain regions are insulating while the low strain regions are metallic. In such non-uniformly strained samples, we observe a large magnetoresistance and a field-induced insulator to metal transition.

Temperature dependent scattering rate and optical mass of ferromagnetic metallic manganites

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3. Transmission and reflection of thin films are measured in the infrared at temperatures from 10 - 150 K using Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The scattering rate and optical mass are obtained by fitting the far-infrared transmission to a Drude model. The scattering rate shows a T^2 dependence with temperature. The optical mass enhancement differs only slightly from specific heat results. In addition, we compare the infrared spectral weight to band structure calculations [M. Quijada et al., Phys. Rev. B 58, 16093 (1998)].

Effects of annealing and strain on La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} thin films: a new phase diagram in the ferromagnetic region

Oriented, single phase thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} have been deposited onto (100)-oriented LaAlO_{3} (0.1<x<0.5) substrates using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. While for some compositions the physical properties (transport and magnetization) of the as-grown films are higher than the bulk values, for other calcium contents the optimized properties are obtained only after annealing under oxygen. These data can be partly explained by changes in oxygen content, resulting in cationic vacancies and thus self-doping effects - accompanying structural changes, may be the cause of properties beyond the phase diagram. We propose a new phase diagram for (La_{1-x}Ca_{x})_{1-y}\square_{y}MnO_{3} (0.1<x<0.5) thin films.

The effect of substrate induced strain on the charge-ordering transition in Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} thin films

We report the synthesis and characterization of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} thin films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on 100 -oriented LaAlO_{3} substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies show that the films are 101 -oriented, with a strained and quasi-relaxed component, the latter increasing with film thickness. We observe that transport properties are strongly dependent on the thickness of the films. Variable temperature XRD down to 100 K suggests that this is caused by substrate induced strain on the films.

Low energy excitations in crystalline perovskite oxides: Evidence from noise experiments

In this paper we report measurements of 1/f noise in a crystalline metallic oxide with perovskite structure down to 4.2K. The results show existence of localized excitations with average activation energy $\approx$ 70-80 meV which produce peak in the noise at T $\approx$ 35-40K. In addition, it shows clear evidence of tunnelling type two-level-systems (as in glasses) which show up in noise measurements below 30K.

Kinetics of electric field induced oxygen ion migration in epitaxial metallic oxide films

In this paper we report the observation of curent induced change of resistance of thin metallic oxide films. The resistance changes at a very low current (current density $J \geq 10^{3}$ A/cm$^{2}$). We find that the time dependence associated with the processes (increase of resistance) show a streched exponential type dependence at lower temperature, which crosses over to a creep type behavior at $T \geq$ 350 K. The time scale associated shows a drastic drop in the magnitude at $T \approx$ 350 K, where a long range diffusion sets in increasing the conductivity noise. The phenomena is like a "glass-transition" in the random lattice of oxygen ions.

Optical Conductivity of Manganites: Crossover from Jahn-Teller Small Polaron to Coherent Transport in the Ferromagnetic State

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites Nd_{0.7}Sr _{0.3}MnO_{3}, La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}, and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. The low-energy optical conductivity in the paramagnetic-insulating state of these materials is characterized by a broad maximum near 1 eV. This feature shifts to lower energy and grows in optical oscillator strength as the temperature is lowered into the ferromagnetic state. It remains identifiable well below Tc and transforms eventually into a Drude-like response. This optical behavior and the activated transport in the paramagnetic state of these materials are consistent with a Jahn-Teller small polaron. The optical spectra and oscillator strength changes compare well with models that include both double exchange and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the description of the electronic structure.
