Operator-Algebraic Approach to the Yrast Spectrum of Weakly Interacting Trapped Bosons

We present an operator-algebraic approach to deriving the low-lying quasi-degenerate spectrum of weakly interacting trapped N bosons with total angular momentum \hbar L for the case of small L/N, demonstrating that the lowest-lying excitation spectrum is given by 27 g n_3(n_3-1)/34, where g is the strength of the repulsive contact interaction and n_3 the number of excited octupole quanta. Our method provides constraints for these quasi-degenerate many-body states and gives higher excitation energies that depend linearly on N.

Vortex Nucleation and Array Formation in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the dynamics of vortex lattice formation of a rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by numerically solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and find that the condensate undergoes elliptic deformation, followed by unstable surface-mode excitations before forming a quantized vortex lattice. The dependence of the number of vortices on the rotation frequency is obtained.

Intermittent implosion and pattern formation of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interaction

The collapsing dynamics of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with attractive interaction are revealed to exhibit two previously unknown phenomena. During the collapse, BEC undergoes a series of rapid implosions that occur {\it intermittently} within a very small region. When the sign of the interaction is suddenly switched from repulsive to attractive, e.g., by the Feshbach resonance, density fluctuations grow to form various patterns such as a shell structure.

Divergence-free WKB method

A new semiclassical approach to linear (L) and nonlinear (NL) one-dimensional Schrödinger equation (SE) is presented. Unlike the usual WKB solution, our solution does not diverge at the classical turning point. For LSE, our zeroth-order solution, when expanded in powers of \hbar, agrees with the usual WKB solution. For NLSE, our zeroth-order solution includes quantum corrections to the Thomas-Fermi solution, thereby giving a smoothly decaying wave function into the forbidden region.

Low-Lying Excitations from the Yrast Line of Weakly Interacting Trapped Bosons

Through an extensive numerical study, we find that the low-lying, quasi-degenerate eigenenergies of weakly-interacting trapped N bosons with total angular momentum L are given in case of small L/N and sufficiently small L by E = L hbar omega + g[N(N-L/2-1)+1.59 n(n-1)/2], where omega is the frequency of the trapping potential and g is the strength of the repulsive contact interaction; the last term arises from the pairwise repulsive interaction among n octupole excitations and describes the lowest-lying excitation spectra from the Yrast line. In this case, the quadrupole modes do not interact with themselves and, together with the octupole modes, exhaust the low-lying spectra which are separated from others by N-linear energy gaps.

Power laws and collapsing dynamics of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions

The critical behavior of collective modes and the collapsing dynamics of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions are studied analytically and numerically. The time scales of these dynamics both below and above the critical point of the collapse are found to obey power laws with a single parameter of N/N_c - 1, where N is the number of condensate atoms and N_c is the critical number. The collapsing condensate eventually undergoes rapid implosion, which occurs several times intermittently, and then the implosion turns to an explosion. The release energy of the explosion is found to be proportional to the square of the interaction strength, inversely proportional to the three-body recombination rate, and independent of the number of condensate atoms and the trap frequency.

Ground-State Properties of a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction

The ground state of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction in a quasi-one-dimensional torus is studied in terms of the ratio $γ$ of the mean-field interaction energy per particle to the single-particle energy-level spacing. The plateaus of quantized circulation are found to appear if and only if $γ<1$ with the lengths of the plateaus reduced due to hybridization of the condensate over different angular-momentum states.

Exact Eigenstates and Magnetic Response of Spin-1 and Spin-2 Vectorial Bose-Einstein Condensates

The exact eigenspectra and eigenstates of spin-1 and spin-2 vectorial Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are found, and their response to a weak magnetic field is studied and compared with their mean-field counterparts. Whereas mean-field theory predicts the vanishing population of the zero magnetic-quantum-number component of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic BEC, the component is found to become populated as the magnetic field decreases. The spin-2 BEC exhibits an even richer magnetic response due to quantum correlation between 3 bosons.

Correlated scattering of photons from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

The second-order coherence of photons scattered from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is found to be enhanced for the scattering angles that are either the same or symmetrical with respect to the direction of laser propagation. The enhancement occurs periodically with respect to the time interval between photons, and becomes less and less pronounced with increasing the strength of the interaction between atoms.

Number-phase-squeezed few-photon state generated from squeezed atoms

This paper develops a method of manipulating the squeezed atom state to generate a few-photon state whose phase or photon-number fluctuations are prescribed at our disposal. The squeezed atom state is a collective atomic state whose quantum fluctuations in population difference or collective dipole are smaller than those of the coherent atom state. It is shown that the squeezed atom state can be generated by the interaction of atoms with a coherent state of the electromagnetic field, and that it can be used as a tunable source of squeezed radiation. A variety of squeezed states, including the photon-number squeezed state and the phase squeezed state, can be produced by manipulating the atomic state. This is owing to the fact that quantum-statistical information of the atomic state is faithfully transferred to that of the photon state. Possible experimental situations to implement our theory are discussed.

Matter-field theory of the Casimir force

A matter-field theory of the Casimir force is formulated in which the electromagnetic field and collective modes of dielectric media are treated on an equal footing. In our theory, the Casimir force is attributed to zero-point energies of the combined matter-field modes. We analyze why some of the existing theories favor the interpretation of the Casimir force as originating from zero-point energies of the electromagnetic field and others from those of the matter.

Fate of a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction

We calculate the decay amplitude of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction via the Feynman path integral. We find that when the number of particles is less than a critical number, the condensate decays relatively slowly through quantum tunneling. When the number exceeds the critical one, a "black hole" opens up at the center of the trap, in which density fluctuations become large due to a negative pressure, and collisional loss will drain the particles from the trap. As the black hole is fed by tunneling particles, we have a novel system in which quantum tunneling serves as a hydrodynamic source.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling of a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction

A Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction can be metastable if it is spatially confined and if the number of condensate bosons $N_0$ is below a certain critical value $N_{\rm c}$. By applying a variational method and the instanton techinique to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional, we find analytically the frequency of the collective excitation and the rate of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT). We show that near the critical point the tunneling exponent vanishes according to $(1-N_0/N_c)^\frac{5}{4}$ and that MQT can be a dominant decay mechanism of the condensate for $N_0$ very close to $N_{\rm c}$.

Logical Reversibility and Physical Reversibility in Quantum Measurement

A quantum measurement is logically reversible if the premeasurement density operator of the measured system can be calculated from the postmeasurement density operator and from the outcome of the measurement. This paper analyzes why many quantum measurements are logically irreversible, shows how to make them logically reversible, and discusses reversing measurement that returns the postmeasurement state to the premeasurement state by another measurement (physical reversibility). Reversing measurement and unitarily reversible quantum operation are compared from the viewpoint of error correction in quantum computation.

Quantum-Controlled Few-Photon State Generated by Squeezed Atoms

General principles and experimental schemes for generating a desired few-photon state from an aggregate of squeezed atoms are presented. Quantum-statistical information of the collective atomic dipole is found to be faithfully transferred to the photon state even in a few-photon regime. The controllability of few-photon states is shown to increase with increasing the number of squeezed atoms.
