Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation in gravitational field

For quantum communication in a gravitational field, the properties of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation are studied within the framework of general relativity. Acceleration and gravity are shown to deteriorate the perfect anti-correlation of an EPR pair of spins in the same direction, and apparently decrease the degree of the violation of Bell's inequality. To maintain the perfect EPR correlation and the maximal violation of Bell's inequality, observers must measure the spins in appropriately chosen different directions. Which directions are appropriate depends on the velocity of the particles, the curvature of the spacetime, and the positions of the observers. Near the event horizon of a black hole, the appropriate directions depend so sensitively on the positions of the observers that even a very small uncertainty in the identification of the observers' positions leads to a fatal error in quantum communication, unless the observers fall into the black hole together with the particles.

Energy gaps and roton structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate

Exact diagonalization study of a rotating dilute Bose-Einstein condensate reveals that as the first vortex enters the system the degeneracy of the low-energy yrast spectrum is lifted and a large energy gap emerges. As more vortices enter with faster rotation, the energy gap decreases towards zero, but eventually the spectrum exhibits a rotonlike structure above the nu=1/2 Laughlin state without having a phonon branch despite the short-range nature of the interaction.

Vortex phase diagram in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the structure of vortex states in rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with equal intracomponent but varying intercomponent coupling constants. A phase diagram in the intercomponent-coupling versus rotation-frequency plane reveals rich equilibrium structures of vortex states. As the ratio of intercomponent to intracomponent couplings increases, the interlocked vortex lattices undergo phase transitions from triangular to square, to double-core lattices, and eventually develop interwoven "serpentine" vortex sheets with each component made up of chains of singly quantized vortices.

Split-merge cycle, fragmented collapse, and vortex disintegration in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

The dynamical instabilities and ensuing dynamics of singly- and doubly-quantized vortex states of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions are investigated using full 3D numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. With increasing the strength of attractive interactions, a series of dynamical instabilities such as quadrupole, dipole, octupole, and monopole instabilities emerge. The most prominent instability depends on the strength of interactions, the geometry of the trapping potential, and deviations from the axisymmetry due to external perturbations. Singly-quantized vortices split into two clusters and subsequently undergo split-merge cycles in a pancake-shaped trap, whereas the split fragments immediately collapse in a spherical trap. Doubly-quantized vortices are always unstable to disintegration of the vortex core. If we suddenly change the strength of interaction to within a certain range, the vortex splits into three clusters, and one of the clusters collapses after a few split-merge cycles. The vortex split can be observed using a current experimental setup of the MIT group.

Quadrupole-scissors modes and nonlinear mode coupling in trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically investigate quadrupolar collective excitations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and their nonlinear dynamics associated with harmonic generation and mode coupling. Under the Thomas-Fermi approximation and the quadratic polynomial ansatz for density fluctuations, the linear analysis of the superfluid hydrodynamic equations predicts excitation frequencies of three normal modes constituted from monopole and quadrupole oscillations, and those of three scissors modes. We obtain analytically the resonance conditions for the second harmonic generation in terms of the trap aspect ratio and the strength of intercomponent interaction. The numerical simulation of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations vindicates the validity of the analytical results and reveals the dynamics of the second harmonic generation and nonlinear mode coupling that lead to nonlinear oscillations of the condensate with damping and recurrence reminiscent of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem.

Stability of the quantized circulation of an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in a rotating torus

We investigate rotational properties of a system of bosons with attractive interactions confined in a one-dimensional torus. Two kinds of ground states, uniform-density and bright-soliton states, are obtained analytically as functions of the strength of interaction and of the rotational frequency of the torus. The quantization of circulation appears in the uniform-density state, but disappears upon formation of the soliton. By comparison with the results of exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian, we show that the Bogoliubov theory is valid at absolute zero over a wide range of parameters. At finite temperature we employ the exact diagonalization method to examine how thermal fluctuations smear the plateaus of the quantized circulation. Finally, by rotating the system with an axisymmetry-breaking potential, we clarify the process in which the quantized circulation becomes thermodynamically stabilized.

A Consistent Picture of a Collapsing Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present a consistent picture of the recent JILA experiments on the collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) [E. A. Donley, et al., Nature 412, 295 (2001)] based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation that incorporates the effect of a three-body loss. The questions we address in this paper are: (1) Why does a BEC survive, albeit partially, after the collapse? (2) Why does the number of the remnant BEC atoms observed at JILA exceed the critical value? (3) What is the origin of the atom burst? (4) What is the origin of the atom jet and is it coherent? We review our predictions on pattern formation in the course of collapse and on the split instability of vortices that can test our collapsing theory.

Measurement-induced spin squeezing in a cavity

Spin squeezing of an ensemble of N atoms in a high-Q cavity is shown to be enhanced by continuous measurement of photons in the cavity. A degree of spin squeezing proportional to N^{-1/3} is attained as a quasi-steady state over a broad set of initial states of the atoms and photons.

Relativistic Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation and Bell's inequality

We formulate the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) gedankenexperiment within the framework of relativistic quantum theory to analyze a situation in which measurements are performed by moving observers. We point out that under certain conditions the perfect anti-correlation of an EPR pair of spins in the same direction is deteriorated in the moving observers' frame due to the Wigner rotation, and show that the degree of the violation of Bell's inequality prima facie decreases with increasing the velocity of the observers if the directions of the measurement are fixed. However, this does not imply a breakdown of non-local correlation since the perfect anti-correlation is maintained in appropriately chosen different directions. We must take account of this relativistic effect in utilizing in moving frames the EPR correlation and the violation of Bell's inequality for quantum communication.

Nonlinear dynamics for vortex lattice formation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the response of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate to a sudden turn-on of a rotating drive by solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A weakly anisotropic rotating potential excites a quadrupole shape oscillation and its time evolution is analyzed by the quasiparticle projection method. A simple recurrence oscillation of surface mode populations is broken in the quadrupole resonance region that depends on the trap anisotropy, causing stochastization of the dynamics. In the presence of the phenomenological dissipation, an initially irrotational condensate is found to undergo damped elliptic deformation followed by unstable surface ripple excitations, some of which develop into quantized vortices that eventually form a lattice. Recent experimental results on the vortex nucleation should be explained not only by the dynamical instability but also by the Landau instability; the latter is necessary for the vortices to penetrate into the condensate.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlation seen from moving observers

Within the framework of relativistic quantum theory, we consider the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) gedanken-experiment in which measurements of the spin are performed by moving observers. We find that the perfect anti-correlation in the same direction between the EPR pair no longer holds in the observers' frame. This does not imply a breakdown of the non-local correlation. We explicitly show that the observers must measure the spin in appropriately chosen different directions in order to observe the perfect anti-correlation. This fact should be taken into account in utilizing the entangled state in quantum communication by moving observers.

Quantum phase transition in one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

Motivated by the recent development of the Feshbach technique, we studied the ground and low-lying excited states of attractive Bose-Einstein condensates on a one-dimensional ring as a function of the strength of interactions. The Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory predicts a quantum phase transition between a uniform condensate and a bright soliton, and a gapless singular cusp in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum at the critical point. However, the exact diagonalization reveals the presence of an energy gap at the critical point, where the singularity is smeared by quantum fluctuations.

Split Instability of a Vortex in an Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensate

An attractive Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex splits into two pieces via the quadrupole dynamical instability, which arises at a weaker strength of interaction than the monopole and the dipole instabilities. The split pieces subsequently unite to restore the original vortex or collapse.

Theory of spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates: spin-correlations, magnetic response, and excitation spectra

The ground states of Bose-Einstein condensates of spin-2 bosons are classified into three distinct (ferromagnetic, ^^ ^^ antiferromagnetic", and cyclic) phases depending on the s-wave scattering lengths of binary collisions for total-spin 0, 2, and 4 channels. Many-body spin correlations and magnetic response of the condensate in each of these phases are studied in a mesoscopic regime, while low-lying excitation spectra are investigated in the hermodynamic regime. In the mesoscopic regime, where the system is so tightly confined that the spatial degrees of freedom are frozen, the exact, many-body ground state for each phase is found to be expressed in terms of the creation operators of pair or trio bosons having spin correlations. These pairwise and trio-wise units are shown to bring about some unique features of spin-2 BECs such as a huge jump in magnetization from minimum to maximum possible values and the robustness of the minimum-magnetization state against an applied agnetic field. In the thermodynamic regime, where the system is spatially uniform, low-lying excitation spectra in the presence of magnetic field are obtained analytically using the Bogoliubov approximation. In the ferromagnetic phase, the excitation spectrum consists of one Goldstone mode and four single-particle modes. In the antiferromagnetic phase, where spin-singlet ^^ ^^ pairs" undergo Bose-Einstein condensation, the spectrum consists of two Goldstone modes and three massive ones, all of which become massless when magnetic field vanishes. In the cyclic phase, where boson ^^ ^^ trios" condense into a spin-singlet state, the spectrum is characterized by two Goldstone modes, one single-particle mode having a magnetic-field-independent energy gap, and a gapless single-particle mode that becomes massless in the absence of magnetic field.

Vortex lattice formation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the dynamics of vortex lattice formation of a rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by numerically solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and find that the condensate undergoes elliptic deformation, followed by unstable surface-mode excitations before forming a quantized vortex lattice. The origin of the peculiar surface-mode excitations is identified to be phase fluctuations at the low-density surface regime. The obtained dependence of a distortion parameter on time and that on the driving frequency agree with the recent experiments by Madison {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 4443 (2001)].

Mean-field analysis of collapsing and exploding Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamics of collapsing and exploding trapped Bose-Einstein condensat es caused by a sudden switch of interactions from repulsive to attractive a re studied by numerically integrating the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with atomic loss for an axially symmetric trap. We investigate the decay rate of condensates and the phenomena of bursts and jets of atoms, and compare our results with those of the experiments performed by E. A. Donley {\it et al.} [Nature {\bf 412}, 295 (2001)]. Our study suggests that the condensate decay and the burst production is due to local intermittent implosions in the condensate, and that atomic clouds of bursts and jets are coherent. We also predict nonlinear pattern formation caused by the density instability of attractive condensates.
