Nature of carriers in one-dimensional correlated electron systems

Electron densities at the edge site in one-dimensional Hubbard model and t-J model are studied by using the Bethe ansatz solutions and exact diagonalization method. It is found that the boundary is electron-attractive, or equivalently hole-repulsive, near half-filling. We propose a new criterion to determine whether the carriers in a strongly correlated system are electron-like or hole-like depending on the electronic behavior at the boundary.

Electronic states around a vortex core in high-Tc superconductors based on the t-J model

Electronic states around vortex cores in high-Tc superconductors are studied using the two-dimensional t-J model in order to treat the d-wave superconductivity with short coherence length and the antiferromagnetic (AF) instability within the same framework. We focus on the disappearance of the large zero-energy peak in the local density of states observed in high-Tc superconductors. When the system is near the optimum doping, we find that the local AF correlation develops inside the vortex cores. However, the detailed doping dependence calculations confirm that the experimentally observed reduction of the zero-energy peak is more reasonably attributed to the smallness of the core size rather than to the AF correlation developed inside the core. The correlation between the spatial dependence of the core states and the core radius is discussed.

Coexistence of Charge Order and Spin-Peierls Lattice Distortion in One-Dimensional Organic Conductors

The electronic properties of quarter-filled organic materials showing spin-Peierls transition are investigated theoretically. By studying the one-dimensional extended Peierls-Hubbard model analytically as well as numerically, we find that there is a competition between two different spin-Peierls states due to the tetramized lattice distortion in the strongly correlated regime. One is accompanied by lattice dimerization which can be interpreted as a spontaneous Mott insulator, while the other shows the existence of charge order of Wigner crystal-type. Results of numerical density matrix renormalization group computations on sufficiently large system sizes show that the latter is stabilized in the ground state when both the on-site and the inter-site Coulomb interactions are large.

New aspects of Verway transition in magnetite

A new mechanism of the Verway transition in magnetite (Fe3O4), which has been argued to be a charge ordering transition so far, is proposed. Based on the mean field calculations for the three band model of spinless fermions appropriate for the d electrons of the Fe ions on the B sites, it is indicated that the phase transition should be the bond dimerization due to the cooperative effects of strong electronic correlation and electron-phonon interaction. The results show that the ferro-orbital ordered state is stabilized in a wide temperature range due to the strong on-site Coulomb interaction between different t2g orbitals resulting in an effectively one-dimensional electronic state, which leads the system toward an insulating state by the Peierls lattice distortion with the period of two Fe(B) ions, i.e., bond dimerization. Furthermore, it is found that the interplay between such lattice distortion in the Fe(B) ions and the lattice elastic energy of the Fe(B)-O as well as the Fe(A)-O bonds gives rise to a competition between two different three-dimensional patterns for the bond dimerization, and can stabilize a complicated one with a large unit cell size. The results are compared with the known experimental facts.

Nature of Spin Excitations in Two-dimensional Mott Insulators: Undoped Cuprates and Other Materials

We investigate the excitation spectrum of a two-dimensional resonating valence bond (RVB) state. Treating the $pi$-flux phase with antiferromagnetic correlations as a variational ground state, we recover the long wavelength magnon as an "RVB exciton". However, we find that this excitation does NOT exhaust the entire spectral weight and the high energy spectrum is dominated by fermionic excitations. The latter can be observed directly by inelastic neutron scattering and we predict their characteristic energy scales along different high symmetry directions in the magnetic Brillouin zone. We also interpret experimental results on two magnon Raman scattering and mid-infrared absorption within this scenario.

A crib-shaped triplet pairing gap function for an orthogonal pair of quasi-one dimensional Fermi surfaces in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The competition between spin-triplet and singlet pairings is studied theoretically for the tight-binding $α$-$β$ bands in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, which arise from two sets of quasi-one dimensional Fermi surfaces. Using multiband FLEX approximation, where we incorporate an anisotropy in the spin fluctuations as suggested from experiments, we show that (i) the triplet can dominate over the singlet (which turns out to be extended s), and (ii) the triplet gap function optimized in the Eliashberg equation has an unusual, very non-sinusoidal form, whose time-reversal-broken combination exhibits a crib-shaped amplitude with dips.

Spin-triplet superconductivity due to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuation in Sr_2RuO_4

A mechanism leading to the spin-triplet superconductivity is proposed based on the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The effects of anisotropy in spin fluctuation on the Cooper pairing and on the direction of d vector are examined in the one-band Hubbard model with RPA approximation. The gap equations for the anisotropic case are derived and applied to Sr_2RuO_4. It is found that a nesting property of the Fermi surface together with the anisotropy leads to the triplet superconductivity with the d=z(sin{k_x}\pm isin{k_y}), which is consistent with experiments.

Local density of states around a magnetic impurity in high-Tc superconductors based on the t-J model

The local density of states (LDOS) around a magnetic impurity in high-Tc superconductors is studied using the two-dimensional t-J model with a realistic band structure. The order parameters are determined in a self-consistent way within the Gutzwiller approximation and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory. In sharp contrast with the nonmagnetic impurity case, the LDOS near the magnetic impurity shows two resonance peaks reflecting the presence of spin-dependent resonance states. It is also shown that these resonance states are approximately localized around the impurity. The present results have an large implication on the scanning tunneling spectroscopy observation of Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca(Cu_{1-x}Ni[Zn]_{x})_{2}O_{8+delta}.

Quasiparticle properties around a nonmagnetic impurity in the superconducting state of the two-dimensional t-J model

The superconducting state around a well isolated nonmagnetic impurity in the high-Tc superconductors is studied using the two-dimensional t-J model. The spatial dependence of the order parameter and the local density of states are obtained from the numerical diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation derived using the Gutzwiller approximation. We find a zero-energy peak in the local density of states around the impurity. Different from the previous results on a vortex or surfaces in the t-J model, the splitting of zero-energy peak is not found. The zero-energy states corresponding to the zero-energy peak is approximately localized around the impurity.

Effects of Charge Density Modulation on Incommensurate Antiferromagnetism: Ginzburg-Landau Study

In the vicinity of hole density, 1/8, La-based high-$T_{c}$ superconductors exhibit long-range order of incommensurate antiferromagnetism (IC-AF). Motivated by this observation, we explore the possible stabilization of IC-AF ordering due to the existence of static charge density modulation (CDM). We use Ginzburg-Landau free energy based on the mean field theory of the t-J model. It is shown numerically that three kinds of CDM including a stripe pattern can stabilize static IC-AF ordering. We also argue that such CDMs can cause the saturation of the degree of incommensurability ($η$) as a function of hole density for IC-AF fluctuation. In our framework a principal effect of low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) structure is just to increase $η$ of IC-AF slightly larger only for the stripe pattern.

Quantized Conductance of One-Dimensional Doped Mott Insulator

The possible modification of quantized conductance of one-dimensional doped Mott insulator, where the Umklapp scattering plays an important role, is studied based on the method by Maslov-Stone and Ponomarenko. At T=0 and away from half-filling, the conductance is quantized as $g=2e^2/h$ and there is no renormalization by Umklapp scattering process. At finite temperatures, however, the quantization is affected depending on the gate voltage and temperature.

Phase Diagram and Pairing Symmetry of the Two-Dimensional t-J Model by a Variation Theory

Two-dimensional t-J model is studied by a variational Monte Carlo method, using Gutzwiller-Jastrow-type wave functions. Various kinds of superconducting pairing symmetries are compared in order to determine the phase diagram of the ground state in the full J/t-n plane. Near the half filling where the high temperature superconductivity is expected, the d_{x^2-y^2} wave pairing state is always the most stable among various symmetries. The three-site term hardly changes the phase diagram in this regime. In the low electron density, the extended s-type wave becomes a quantitatively good state for large J/t, although the energy gain is small. The Gutzwiller wave function is shown to be the exact ground state in the low-electron-density limit for the supersymmetric case (J/t=2).

One-Dimensional t-J Model from a Variational Viewpoint

The one-dimensional (1D) $t$-$J$ model is investigated by using a Gutzwiller-Jastrow-type variation method and the exact diagonalization of small systems. Variational expectation values are estimated by the variational Monte Carlo method with sufficient accuracy. First, we represent the diagonalization results. Physical quantities like momentum distribution and some correlation functions show some behaviors which are not expected in repulsive models, as the value of $J/t$ increases. These properties as well as energy are well understood by introducing intersite correlation factors into wave functions. The phase transition to a separated phase in large-$J/t$ region can be described by an attractive Jastrow wave function in quantitative agreement with the exact results. On the other hand, for the supersymmetric case ($J/t=2$) the original Gutzwiller wave function becomes an extremely good trial function for all the range of electron density. Here a kind of \lq\lq free electron" state is realized, particularly in the low electron density. Next, the above wave functions are compared with the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid-type wave function proposed by Hellberg and Mele. It is found that the correlation factors in short distances control bulk quantities like energy and the magnitude of correlation functions, while the long-range part of correlataion factors determines the critical behavior of correlation functions. Lastly, using these functions, charge and spin susceptibilities and magnetization curve are estimated, which agree with the exact results. It is shown that the Mott transition in 1D $t$-$J$ model is quite different from the Brinkman-Rice transition.

Variational Monte Carlo Studies of t-J-type Models

We give a brief review of recent developments by the variational Monte Carlo method, in addition to some new results. We discuss $t$-$J$-type models: the ordinary $t$-$J$ model in one and two dimensions, and the one-dimensional supersymmetric $t$-$J$ model with the long-range coupling of inverse square.

Quasi-Particles in Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model: Splitting of Spectral Weight

It is shown that the energy $(\varepsilon)$ and momentum $(k)$ dependences of the electron self-energy function $ Σ(k, \varepsilon + i0) \equiv Σ^{R}(k, \varepsilon) $ are, $ {\rm Im} Σ^{R} (k, \varepsilon) = -a\varepsilon^{2}|\varepsilon - ξ_{k}|^{- γ(k)} $ where $a$ is some constant, $ξ_{k} = \varepsilon(k)-μ, \varepsilon(k)$ being the band energy, and the critical exponent $ γ(k) $, which depends on the curvature of the Fermi surface at $ k $, satisfies, $ 0 \leq γ(k) \leq 1 $. This leads to a new type of electron liquid, which is the Fermi liquid in the limit of $ \varepsilon, ξ_{k} \rightarrow 0 $ but for $ ξ_{k} \neq 0 $ has a split one-particle spectra as in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.
