Dissipative dynamics of a qubit coupled to a nonlinear oscillator

We consider the dissipative dynamics of a qubit coupled to a nonlinear oscillator (NO) embedded in an Ohmic environment. By treating the nonlinearity up to first order and applying Van Vleck perturbation theory up to second order in the qubit-NO coupling, we derive an analytical expression for the eigenstates and eigenfunctions of the coupled qubit-NO system beyond the rotating wave approximation. In the regime of weak coupling to the thermal bath, analytical expressions for the time evolution of the qubit's populations are derived: they describe a multiplicity of damped oscillations superposed to a complex relaxation part toward thermal equilibrium. The long time dynamics is characterized by a single relaxation rate, which is maximal when the qubit is tuned to one of the resonances with the nonlinear oscillator.

Charge ratchet from spin flip: space-time symmetry paradox

Traditionally the charge ratchet effect is considered as a consequence of either the spatial symmetry breaking engineered by asymmetric periodic potentials, or time asymmetry of the driving fields. Here we demonstrate that electrically and magnetically driven quantum dissipative systems with spin-orbit interactions represent an exception from this standard idea. In contrast to the so far well established belief, a charge ratchet effect appears when both the periodic potential and driving are symmetric. We show that the source of this paradoxical charge ratchet mechanism is the coexistence of quantum dissipation with the spin flip processes induced by spin-orbit interactions.

Graphene armchair nanoribbon single-electron transistors: The peculiar influence of end states

We present a microscopic theory for interacting graphene armchair nanoribbon quantum dots. Long range interaction processes are responsible for Coulomb blockade and spin-charge separation. Short range ones, arising from the underlying honeycomb lattice of graphene, smear the spin-charge separation and induce exchange correlations between bulk electrons - delocalized on the ribbon - and single electrons localized at the two ends. As a consequence, entangled end-bulk states where the bulk spin is no longer a conserved quantity occur. Entanglement's signature is the occurrence of negative differential conductance effects in a fully symmetric set-up due to symmetry-forbidden transitions.

All-electric-spin control in interference single electron transistors

Single particle interference lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. The archetypal double-slit experiment has been repeated with electrons in vacuum up to the more massive $C_{60}$ molecules. Mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux provide the solid-state analogous. Intra-molecular interference has been recently discussed in molecular junctions. Here we propose to exploit interference to achieve all-electrical control of a single electron spin in quantum dots, a highly desirable property for spintronics and spin-qubit applications. The device consists of an interference single electron transistor (ISET), where destructive interference between orbitally degenerate electronic states produces current blocking at specific bias voltages. We show that in the presence of parallel polarized ferromagnetic leads the interplay between interference and the exchange coupling on the system generates an effective energy renormalization yielding different blocking biases for majority and minority spins. Hence, by tuning the bias voltage full control over the spin of the trapped electron is achieved.

Extrinsic and intrinsic ratchet response of a quantum dissipative spin-orbit medium

Traditionally the charge ratchet effect is considered as a consequence of the extrinsic spatial asymmetry engineered by external asymmetric periodic potentials. Here we demonstrate that electrically and magnetically driven dissipative systems with spin-orbit interactions represent an exception from this standard idea. The charge and spin ratchet currents appear just due to the coexistence of quantum dissipation with the intrinsic spatial asymmetry of the spin-orbit coupling. The extrinsic spatial asymmetry is inessential.

Electronic spectra of commensurate and incommensurate DWNTs in parallel magnetic field

We study the electronic spectra of commensurate and incommensurate double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) of finite length. The coupling between nanotube shells is taken into account as an intershell electron tunneling. Selection rules for the intershell coupling are derived. Due to the finite size of the system, these rules do not represent exact conservation of the crystal momentum, but only an approximate one; therefore the coupling between longitudinal momentum states in incommensurate DWNTs becomes possible. The use of the selection rules allows a fast and efficient calculation of the electronic spectrum. In the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the DWNT axis we find spectrum modulations which depend on the chiralities of the shells.

Interplay between quantum dissipation and an in-plane magnetic field in the spin ratchet effect

We investigate the existence of the pure spin ratchet effect in a dissipative quasi-one-dimensional system with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The system is additionally placed into a transverse uniform stationary in-plane magnetic field. It is shown that the effect exists at low temperatures and pure spin currents can be generated by applying an unbiased ac driving to the system. An analytical expression for the ratchet spin current is derived. From this expression it follows that the spin ratchet effect appears as a result of the simultaneous presence of the spin-orbit interaction, coupling between the orbital degrees of freedom and spatial asymmetry. In this paper we consider the case of a broken spatial symmetry by virtue of asymmetric periodic potentials. It turns out that an external magnetic field does not have any impact on the existence of the spin ratchet effect, but it influences its efficiency enhancing or reducing the magnitude of the spin current.

Dissipative dynamics of a biased qubit coupled to a harmonic oscillator: Analytical results beyond the rotating wave approximation

We study the dissipative dynamics of a biased two-level system (TLS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO), the latter interacting with an Ohmic environment. Using Van-Vleck perturbation theory and going to second order in the coupling between TLS and HO, we show how the Hamiltonian of the TLS-HO system can be diagonalized analytically. Our model represents an improvement to the usually used Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian as an initial rotating wave approximation is avoided. By assuming a weak coupling to the thermal bath, analytical expressions for the time evolution of the populations of the TLS are found: the population is characterized by a multiplicity of damped oscillations together with a complex relaxation dynamics towards thermal equilibrium. The long time evolution is characterized by a single relaxation rate, which is largest at resonance and whose expression can be given in closed analytic form.

Transport through a double quantum dot system with non-collinearly polarized leads

We investigate linear and non-linear transport in a double quantum dot system weakly coupled to spin-polarized leads. In the linear regime, the conductance as well as the non-equilibrium spin accumulation are evaluated in analytic form. The conductance as a function of the gate voltage exhibits four peaks of different height, with mirror symmetry with respect to the charge neutrality point. As the polarization angle is varied, the position and shape of the peaks changes in a characteristic way which preserves the electron-hole symmetry of the problem. In the nonlinear regime negative differential conductance features occur for non collinear magnetisations of the leads. In the considered sequential tunneling limit, the tunneling magneto resistance (TMR) is always positive with a characteristic gate voltage dependence for non-collinear magnetization. If a magnetic field is added to the system, the TMR can become negative.

Quantum dissipative Rashba spin ratchets

We predict the possibility to generate a finite stationary spin current by applying an unbiased ac driving to a quasi-one-dimensional asymmetric periodic structure with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and strong dissipation. We show that under a finite coupling strength between the orbital degrees of freedom the electron dynamics at low temperatures exhibits a pure spin ratchet behavior, {\it i.e.} a finite spin current and the absence of charge transport in spatially asymmetric structures. It is also found that the equilibrium spin currents are not destroyed by the presence of strong dissipation.

Symmetry fingerprints of a benzene single-electron transistor

The interplay between Coulomb interaction and orbital symmetry produces specific transport characteristics in molecular single electron transistors (SET) that can be considered as the fingerprints of the contacted molecule. Specifically we predict, for a benzene SET, selective conductance suppression and the appearance of negative differential conductance when changing the contacts from para to meta configuration. Both effects originate from destructive interference in transport involving states with orbital degeneracy.

Spin transport across carbon nanotube quantum dots

We investigate linear and nonlinear transport in interacting single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that are weakly attached to ferromagnetic leads. For the reduced density matrix of a SWCNT quantum dot, equations of motion which account for an arbitrarily vectored polarisation of the contacts are derived. We focus on the case of large diameter nanotubes where exchange effects emerging from short-ranged processes can be excluded and the four-electron periodicity at low bias can be observed. This yields in principle four distinct resonant tunnelling regimes, but due to symmetries in the involved groundstates, each two possess a mirror-symmetry. With a non-collinear configuration, we recover at the 4N <-> 4N+1 / 4N+3 <-> 4N resonances the analytical results known for the angular dependence of the conductance of a single level quantum dot or a metallic island. The two other cases are treated numerically and show on the first glance similar, yet not analytically describable dependences. In the nonlinear regime, negative differential conductance features occur for non-collinear lead magnetisations.

Transport properties of double-walled carbon nanotube quantum dots

The transport properties of quantum dot (QD) systems based on double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) are investigated. The interplay between microscopic structure and strong Coulomb interaction is treated within a bosonization framework. The linear and nonlinear G-V-V_g characteristics of the QD system is calculated by starting from the Liouville equation for the reduced density matrix. Depending on the intershell couplings, an 8-electron periodicity of the Coulomb blockade peak spacing in the case of commensurate DWCNT QDs and a 4-electron periodicity in the incommensurate case are predicted. The contribution of excited states of DWCNTs to the nonlinear transport is investigated as well.

The low energy spectrum of finite size metallic SWNTs

The electronic spectrum of metallic finite-size single-wall carbon nanotubes at low energies is derived. It is based on a tight-binding description for the interacting p_{z} electrons. Not only the forward scattering parts of the Coulomb interaction, which are diagonalized by bosonization, are considered, but also all other processes becoming relevant for small diameter tubes. As a consequence of the substructure of the underlying lattice, a spin 1 triplet is found as ground state if the exchange splitting is larger than the branch mismatch, a spin 0 singlet otherwise. Moreover the excitation spectrum is calculated.

Schottky-barrier double-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors

We investigate electronic transport properties of Schottky-barrier field-effect transistors (FET) based on double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNT) with a semiconducting outer shell and a metallic inner one. These kind of DWNT-FET show asymmetries of the $I$-$V$ characteristics and threshold voltages due to the electron-hole asymmetry of the Schottky barrier. The presence of the metallic inner shell induces a large effective band gap, which is one order of magnitude larger than that due to the semiconducting shell alone of a single-walled carbon nanotube FET.

Spin-boson dynamics beyond conventional perturbation theories

A novel approximation scheme is proposed to describe the dynamics of the spin-boson problem. Being nonperturbative in the coupling strength nor in the tunneling frequency, it gives reliable results over a wide regime of temperatures and coupling strength to the thermal environment for a large class of bath spectral densities. We use a path-integral approach and start from the exact solution for the two-level system population difference in the form of a generalized master equation (GME). Then, we approximate inter-blip and blip-sojourns interactions up to linear order, while retaining all intra-blip correlations to find the kernels entering the GME in analytical form. Our approximation scheme, which we call Weakly-Interacting Blip Approximation (WIBA), fully agrees with conventional perturbative approximations in the tunneling matrix element (Non-Interacting Blip Approximation) or in the system-bath coupling strength.

Spin-boson dynamics: A unified approach from weak to strong coupling

We present a novel approximation scheme to describe the influence of a harmonic bath on the dynamics of a two-level particle over almost the whole regime of temperatures and coupling to the environment, for a wide class of bath spectral densities. Starting from the exact path-integral solution for the two-level system density matrix, effective intra-blip correlations are fully included, while inter-blip and blip-sojourn interactions are considered up to first order. In the proper regimes, an excellent agreement with conventional perturbative approaches and ab-initio path-integral results is found.

Linear and nonlinear transport across carbon nanotube quantum dots

We present a low energy-theory for non-linear transport in finite-size interacting single-wall carbon nanotubes. It is based on a microscopic model for the interacting p_z electrons and successive bosonization. We consider weak coupling to the leads and derive equations of motion for the reduced density matrix. We focus on the case of large-diameter nanotubes where exchange effects can be neglected. In this situation the energy spectrum is highly degenerate. Due to the multiple degeneracy, diagonal as well as off-diagonal (coherences) elements of the density matrix contribute to the nonlinear transport. At low bias, a four-electron periodicity with a characteristic ratio between adjacent peaks is predicted. Our results are in quantitative agreement with recent experiments.
