Implementing Multiple Modes of the Perpendicular Magnetization Switching within a Single Spin Orbit Torque Device

Spin orbit torque (SOT) has been considered as one of the promising technologies for the next-generation magnetic random access memory (MRAM). So far, SOT has been widely utilized for inducing various modes of magnetization switching. However, it is challenging to integrate multiple modes of magnetization switching together. In this work we propose a method for implementing both unipolar and bipolar switching of the perpendicular magnetization within a single SOT device. The mode of switching could be easily altered by tuning the amplitude of the applied current. We show that the field-like torque plays an important role in the switching process. The field-like torque induces the precession of the magnetization in the case of unipolar switching, whereas it helps to generate an effective z-component torque in the case of bipolar switching. In addition, the influence of key parameters on the mode of switching is discussed. Our proposal could be used to design novel reconfigurable logic circuits in the near future.

Spin-to-Orbital Angular Momentum Conversion via Light Intensity Gradient

Besides a linear momentum, optical fields carry an angular momentum (AM), which have two intrinsic components: one is spin angular momentum (SAM) related to the polarization state of the field, and the other is orbital angular momentum (OAM) caused by the helical phase due to the existence of topological azimuthal charge. The two AM components of the optical field may not be independent of each other, and the Spin-to-Orbital AM conversion (STOC) under focusing will create a spin-dependent optical vortex in the longitudinal filed. Here we demonstrate a new mechanism (or novel way, new way, specific process) for the STOC based on a radial intensity gradient. The radial phase provides an effective way to control the local AM density, which induce counterintuitive orbital motion of isotropic particles in optical tweezers without intrinsic OAM. Our work not only provides fundamental insights into the spin-orbit interaction of light, but also push towards possible applications in optical micro-manipulation.

Lithium niobate microring with ultra-high Q factor above 10^8

We demonstrate ultra-high Q factor microring resonators close to the intrinsic material absorption limit on lithium niobate on insulator. The microrings are fabricated on pristine lithium niobate (LN) thin film wafer thinned from LN bulk via chemo-mechanical etching without ion slicing and ion etching. A record-high Q factor up to times ten to the power of 8th at the wavelength of 1550 nm is achieved because of the ultra-smooth interface of the microrings and the absence of ion induced lattice damage, indicating an ultra-low waveguide propagation loss of about 0.28 dB per meter. The ultra-high Q microrings will pave the way for integrated quantum light source, frequency comb generation, and nonlinear optical processes.

Scalable higher-order exceptional surface with passive resonators

The sensitivity of perturbation sensing can be effectively enhanced with higher-order exceptional points due to the nonlinear response to frequency splitting. However, the experimental implementation is challenging since all the parameters need to be precisely prepared. The emergence of exceptional surface (ES) improves the robustness of the system to the external environment, while maintaining the same sensitivity. Here, we propose the first scalable protocol for realizing photonic high-order exceptional surface with passive resonators. By adding one or more additional passive resonators in the low-order ES photonic system, the 3- or arbitrary N-order ES is constructed and proved to be easily realized in experiment. We show that the sensitivity is enhanced and experimental demonstration is more resilent against the fabrication errors. The additional phase-modulation effect is also investigated.

Experimental realization of sensitivity enhancement and suppression with exceptional surfaces

By preparing a sensor system around isolated exceptional points, one can obtain a great enhancement of the sensitivity benefiting from the non-Hermiticity. However, this comes at the cost of reduction of the flexibility of the system, which is critical for practical applications. By generalizing the exceptional points to exceptional surfaces, it has been theoretically proposed recently that enhanced sensitivity and flexibility can be combined. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an exceptional surface in a non-Hermitian photonic sensing system, which is composed of a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator and two nanofiber waveguides, resulting in a unidirectional coupling between two degenerate counter-propagating modes with an external optical isolator. The system is simple, robust, and can be easily operated around an exceptional surface. On the one hand, we observe sensitivity enhancement by monitoring the resonant frequency splitting caused by small perturbations. This demonstration of exceptional-surface-enhanced sensitivity paves the way for practical non-Hermitian sensing applications. On the other hand, we also show the suppression of frequency splitting around the exceptional surface for the first time.

On-chip ultra-narrow-linewidth single-mode microlaser on lithium niobate on insulator

We report an on-chip single mode microlaser with low-threshold fabricated on Erbium doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI). The single mode laser emission at 1550.5 nm wavelength is generated in a coupled photonic molecule, which is facilitated by Vernier effect when pumping the photonic molecule at 970 nm. A threshold pump power as low as 200 uW is demonstrated thanks to the high quality factor above 10^6. Moreover, the linewidth of the microlaser reaches 4 kHz, which is the best result in LNOI microlasers. Such single mode micro-laser lithographically fabricated on chip is highly in demand by photonic community.

Molecular gas distribution perpendicular to the Galactic plane

We use the ~370 square degrees data from the MWISP CO survey to study the vertical distribution of the molecular clouds (MCs) toward the tangent points in the region of l=[16,52]deg and |b|<5.1deg. The molecular disk consists of two components with the layer thickness (FWHM) of ~85pc and ~280pc, respectively. In the inner Galaxy, the molecular mass in the thin disk is dominant, while the molecular mass traced by the discrete MCs with weak CO emission in the thick disk is probably <10% of the whole molecular disk. For the CO gas in the thick disk, we identified 1055 high-z MCs that are >100pc from the Galactic plane. However, only a few samples (i.e., 32 MCs) are located in the |z|>360pc region. Typically, the discrete MCs of the thick disk population have a median peak temperature of 2.1 K, a median velocity dispersion of 0.8km/s, and a median effective radius of 2.5pc. The median surface density of these MCs is 6.8 Msun/pc^2, indicating very faint CO emission for these high-z MCs. The cloud-cloud velocity dispersion is 4.9+-1.3 km/s and a linear variation with a slope of -0.4 km/s/kpc is obtained in the region of R_GC=2.2-6.4kpc. Assuming that these clouds are supported by their turbulent motions against the gravitational pull of the disk, a model of rho0(R) = 1.28exp(-R/3.2kpc) Msun/pc^3 can be used to describe the distribution of the total mass density in the Galactic midplane.

IUP: An Intelligent Utility Prediction Scheme for Solid-State Fermentation in 5G IoT

At present, SOILD-STATE Fermentation (SSF) is mainly controlled by artificial experience, and the product quality and yield are not stable. Accurately predicting the quality and yield of SSF is of great significance for improving human food security and supply. In this paper, we propose an Intelligent Utility Prediction (IUP) scheme for SSF in 5G Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), including parameter collection and utility prediction of SSF process. This IUP scheme is based on the environmental perception and intelligent learning algorithms of the 5G Industrial IoT. We build a workflow model based on rewritable petri net to verify the correctness of the system model function and process. In addition, we design a utility prediction model for SSF based on the Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN). We design a GAN with constraint of mean square error (MSE-GAN) to solve the problem of few-shot learning of SSF, and then combine with the FCNN to realize the utility prediction (usually use the alcohol) of SSF. Based on the production of liquor in laboratory, the experiments show that the proposed method is more accurate than the other prediction methods in the utility prediction of SSF, and provide the basis for the numerical analysis of the proportion of preconfigured raw materials and the appropriate setting of cellar temperature.

A Priori Generalization Analysis of the Deep Ritz Method for Solving High Dimensional Elliptic Equations

This paper concerns the a priori generalization analysis of the Deep Ritz Method (DRM) [W. E and B. Yu, 2017], a popular neural-network-based method for solving high dimensional partial differential equations. We derive the generalization error bounds of two-layer neural networks in the framework of the DRM for solving two prototype elliptic PDEs: Poisson equation and static Schrödinger equation on the $d$-dimensional unit hypercube. Specifically, we prove that the convergence rates of generalization errors are independent of the dimension $d$, under the a priori assumption that the exact solutions of the PDEs lie in a suitable low-complexity space called spectral Barron space. Moreover, we give sufficient conditions on the forcing term and the potential function which guarantee that the solutions are spectral Barron functions. We achieve this by developing a new solution theory for the PDEs on the spectral Barron space, which can be viewed as an analog of the classical Sobolev regularity theory for PDEs.

An electro-optically tunable microring laser monolithically integrated on lithium niobate on insulator

We demonstrate monolithic integration of an electro-optically (EO) tunable microring laser on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform. The device is fabricated by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE), and the pump laser is evanescently coupled into the erbium (Er3+) doped LN microring laser using an undoped LN waveguide mounted above the microring. The quality factor of the LN microring resonator is measured as high as 1.54x10^5 at the wavelength of 1542 nm. Lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold below 3.5 mW using a 980 nm continuous-wave pump laser. Finally, tuning of the laser wavelength is achieved by varying the electric voltage on the microelectrodes fabricated in the vicinity of microring waveguide, showing an EO coefficient of 0.33 pm/V.

Broadband highly efficient nonlinear optical processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate microdisk resonators of Q-factor above 10^8

We demonstrated broadband highly efficient optical nonlinear processes in on-chip integrated lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonators. The Q factors of the micro-resonators fabricated by femtosecond laser writing and chemo-mechanical polishing are reliably above 10^8, approaching the intrinsic material absorption limit of LN. Broadband nonlinear processes, including optical parametric oscillation (OPO), second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation, and fourth harmonic generation, were observed with ultrahigh efficiencies in the same LN microdisk without introducing domain inversion, thanks to the natural quasi phase-matching and the dense spectral modes of the X-cut LN microdisk with millimeter diameter. The threshold of OPO and the absolute conversion efficiency of SHG are 19.6 microwatt and 66%, both surpass the state-of-the-art values among on-chip LN micro-resonators demonstrated so far. The broadband and highly efficient nonlinear frequency conversions achieved with the ultrahigh-Q LN microdisk resonators promise high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as frequency convertors and entangled photon sources.

Protein corona critically affects the bio-behaviors of SARS-CoV-2

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a worldwide public health crisis. When the SARS-CoV-2 enters the biological fluids in the human body, different types of biomolecules (in particular proteins) may adsorb on its surface and alter its infection ability. Although great efforts have recently been devoted to the interaction of the specific antibodies with the SARS-CoV-2, it still remains largely unknown how the other serum proteins affect the infection of the SARS-CoV-2. In this work, we systematically investigate the interaction of serum proteins with the SARS-CoV-2 RBD by the molecular docking and the all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that the non-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) indeed cannot effectively bind to the SARS-CoV-2 RBD while the human serum albumin (HSA) may have some potential of blocking its infection (to ACE2). More importantly, we find that the RBD can cause the significant structural change of the Apolipoprotein E (ApoE), by which SARS-CoV-2 may hijack the metabolic pathway of the ApoE to facilitate its cell entry. The present study enhances the understanding of the role of protein corona in the bio-behaviors of SARS-CoV-2, which may aid the more precise and personalized treatment for COVID-19 infection in the clinic.

Monocular Human Pose and Shape Reconstruction using Part Differentiable Rendering

Superior human pose and shape reconstruction from monocular images depends on removing the ambiguities caused by occlusions and shape variance. Recent works succeed in regression-based methods which estimate parametric models directly through a deep neural network supervised by 3D ground truth. However, 3D ground truth is neither in abundance nor can efficiently be obtained. In this paper, we introduce body part segmentation as critical supervision. Part segmentation not only indicates the shape of each body part but helps to infer the occlusions among parts as well. To improve the reconstruction with part segmentation, we propose a part-level differentiable renderer that enables part-based models to be supervised by part segmentation in neural networks or optimization loops. We also introduce a general parametric model engaged in the rendering pipeline as an intermediate representation between skeletons and detailed shapes, which consists of primitive geometries for better interpretability. The proposed approach combines parameter regression, body model optimization, and detailed model registration altogether. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves balanced evaluation on pose and shape, and outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on Human3.6M, UP-3D and LSP datasets.

A note on the g and h control charts

In this note, we revisit the $g$ and $h$ control charts that are commonly used for monitoring the number of conforming cases between the two consecutive appearances of nonconformities. It is known that the process parameter of these charts is usually unknown and estimated by using the maximum likelihood estimator and the minimum variance unbiased estimator. However, the minimum variance unbiased estimator in the control charts has been inappropriately used in the quality engineering literature. This observation motivates us to provide the correct minimum variance unbiased estimator and investigate theoretical and empirical biases of these estimators under consideration. Given that these charts are developed based on the underlying assumption that samples from the process should be balanced, which is often not satisfied in many practical applications, we propose a method for constructing these charts with unbalanced samples.

AsymptoticNG: A regularized natural gradient optimization algorithm with look-ahead strategy

Optimizers that further adjust the scale of gradient, such as Adam, Natural Gradient (NG), etc., despite widely concerned and used by the community, are often found poor generalization performance, compared with Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). They tend to converge excellently at the beginning of training but are weak at the end. An immediate idea is to complement the strengths of these algorithms with SGD. However, a truncated replacement of optimizer often leads to a crash of the update pattern, and new algorithms often require many iterations to stabilize their search direction. Driven by this idea and to address this problem, we design and present a regularized natural gradient optimization algorithm with look-ahead strategy, named asymptotic natural gradient (ANG). According to the total iteration step, ANG dynamic assembles NG and Euclidean gradient, and updates parameters along the new direction using the intensity of NG. Validation experiments on CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 data sets show that ANG can update smoothly and stably at the second-order speed, and achieve better generalization performance.

This work paves the way to the monolithic integration of diverse active and passive photonic components on the TFLNOI platform.

A second order accurate scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) numerical method for the square phase field crystal equation

In this paper we propose and analyze a second order accurate (in time) numerical scheme for the square phase field crystal (SPFC) equation, a gradient flow modeling crystal dynamics at the atomic scale in space but on diffusive scales in time. Its primary difference with the standard phase field crystal model is an introduction of the 4-Laplacian term in the free energy potential, which in turn leads to a much higher degree of nonlinearity. To make the numerical scheme linear while preserving the nonlinear energy stability, we make use of the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach, in which a second order backward differentiation formula (BDF) is applied in the temporal stencil. Meanwhile, a direct application of the SAV method faces certain difficulties, due to the involvement of the 4-Laplacian term, combined with a derivation of the lower bound of the nonlinear energy functional. In the proposed numerical method, an appropriate decomposition for the physical energy functional is formulated, so that the nonlinear energy part has a well-established global lower bound, and the rest terms lead to constant-coefficient diffusion terms with positive eigenvalues. In turn, the numerical scheme could be very efficiently implemented by constant-coefficient Poisson-like type solvers (via FFT), and energy stability is established by introducing an auxiliary variable, and an optimal rate convergence analysis is provided for the proposed SAV method. A few numerical experiments are also presented, which confirm the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed scheme.

Automatic Detection of Cardiac Chambers Using an Attention-based YOLOv4 Framework from Four-chamber View of Fetal Echocardiography

Echocardiography is a powerful prenatal examination tool for early diagnosis of fetal congenital heart diseases (CHDs). The four-chamber (FC) view is a crucial and easily accessible ultrasound (US) image among echocardiography images. Automatic analysis of FC views contributes significantly to the early diagnosis of CHDs. The first step to automatically analyze fetal FC views is locating the fetal four crucial chambers of heart in a US image. However, it is a greatly challenging task due to several key factors, such as numerous speckles in US images, the fetal cardiac chambers with small size and unfixed positions, and category indistinction caused by the similarity of cardiac chambers. These factors hinder the process of capturing robust and discriminative features, hence destroying fetal cardiac anatomical chambers precise localization. Therefore, we first propose a multistage residual hybrid attention module (MRHAM) to improve the feature learning. Then, we present an improved YOLOv4 detection model, namely MRHAM-YOLOv4-Slim. Specially, the residual identity mapping is replaced with the MRHAM in the backbone of MRHAM-YOLOv4-Slim, accurately locating the four important chambers in fetal FC views. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art, including the precision of 0.919, the recall of 0.971, the F1 score of 0.944, the mAP of 0.953, and the frames per second (FPS) of 43.
