Eigenvalue-corrected Natural Gradient Based on a New Approximation

Using second-order optimization methods for training deep neural networks (DNNs) has attracted many researchers. A recently proposed method, Eigenvalue-corrected Kronecker Factorization (EKFAC) (George et al., 2018), proposes an interpretation of viewing natural gradient update as a diagonal method, and corrects the inaccurate re-scaling factor in the Kronecker-factored eigenbasis. Gao et al. (2020) considers a new approximation to the natural gradient, which approximates the Fisher information matrix (FIM) to a constant multiplied by the Kronecker product of two matrices and keeps the trace equal before and after the approximation. In this work, we combine the ideas of these two methods and propose Trace-restricted Eigenvalue-corrected Kronecker Factorization (TEKFAC). The proposed method not only corrects the inexact re-scaling factor under the Kronecker-factored eigenbasis, but also considers the new approximation method and the effective damping technique proposed in Gao et al. (2020). We also discuss the differences and relationships among the Kronecker-factored approximations. Empirically, our method outperforms SGD with momentum, Adam, EKFAC and TKFAC on several DNNs.

A Trace-restricted Kronecker-Factored Approximation to Natural Gradient

Second-order optimization methods have the ability to accelerate convergence by modifying the gradient through the curvature matrix. There have been many attempts to use second-order optimization methods for training deep neural networks. Inspired by diagonal approximations and factored approximations such as Kronecker-Factored Approximate Curvature (KFAC), we propose a new approximation to the Fisher information matrix (FIM) called Trace-restricted Kronecker-factored Approximate Curvature (TKFAC) in this work, which can hold the certain trace relationship between the exact and the approximate FIM. In TKFAC, we decompose each block of the approximate FIM as a Kronecker product of two smaller matrices and scaled by a coefficient related to trace. We theoretically analyze TKFAC's approximation error and give an upper bound of it. We also propose a new damping technique for TKFAC on convolutional neural networks to maintain the superiority of second-order optimization methods during training. Experiments show that our method has better performance compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms on some deep network architectures.

Theoretical Conditions for Field-free Magnetization Switching Induced by Spin-orbit Torque and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Recently, it was demonstrated that field-free switching could be achieved by combining spin-orbit torque (SOT) and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). However, this mechanism only occurs under certain conditions which have not been well discussed. In this letter, it is found that the ratio of domain wall width to diameter of nanodots could be utilized as a criteria for judging this mechanism. Influences of different magnetic parameters are studied, including exchange constant, DMI magnitude and field-like toque, etc. Besides, we reveal the importance of the shrinkage of magnetic domain wall surface energy for metastable states. Our work provides guidelines to the experiments on the DMI-induced field-free magnetization switching, and also offers a new way for the design of SOT-based memory or logic circuits.

An on-chip tunable micro-disk laser fabricated on Er3+ doped lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI)

We demonstrate a C-band wavelength-tunable microlaser with an Er3+ doped high quality (~1.02x10^6) lithium niobate microdisk resonator. With a 976 nm continuous-wave pump laser, lasing action can be observed at a pump power threshold as low as ~250 μW at room temperature. Furthermore, the microdisk laser wavelength can be tuned by varying the pump laser power, showing a tuning efficiency of ~-17.03 pm/mW at low pump power blow 13 mW, and 10.58 pm/mW at high pump power above 13 mW.

Investigation of finite-sample properties of robust location and scale estimators

When the experimental data set is contaminated, we usually employ robust alternatives to common location and scale estimators such as the sample median and Hodges-Lehmann estimators for location and the sample median absolute deviation and Shamos estimators for scale. It is well known that these estimators have high positive asymptotic breakdown points and are Fisher-consistent as the sample size tends to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, the finite-sample properties of these estimators, depending on the sample size, have not well been studied in the literature. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing their closed-form finite-sample breakdown points and calculating the unbiasing factors and relative efficiencies of the robust estimators through the extensive Monte Carlo simulations up to the sample size 100. The numerical study shows that the unbiasing factor improves the finite-sample performance significantly. In addition, we provide the predicted values for the unbiasing factors obtained by using the least squares method which can be used for the case of sample size more than 100.

Field-free Deterministic Magnetization Switching Induced by Interlaced Spin-Orbit Torques

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) based magnetic random access memory (MRAM) is envisioned as an emerging non-volatile memory due to its ultra-high speed and low power consumption. The field-free switching schema in SOT devices is of great interest to both academia and industry. Here we propose a novel field-free deterministic magnetization switching in a regular magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) by using two currents sequentially passing interlaced paths, with less requirements of manufacturing process or additional physical effects. The switching is bipolar since the final magnetization state depends on the combination of current paths. The functionality and robustness of the proposed schema is validated through both macrospin and micromagnetic simulation. The influences of field-like torque and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) effect are further researched. Our proposed schema shows good scalability and is expected to realize novel digital logic and even computing-in-memory platform.

Polygon Coherent Modes in aWeakly Perturbed Whispering Gallery Microresonator for Efficient Second Harmonic, Optomechanic and Frequency Comb Generations

We observe high optical quality factor (Q) polygonal and star coherent optical modes in a lithium niobate microdisk. In contrast to the previous polygon modes achieved by deformed microcavities at lower mechanical and optical Q, we adopted weak perturbation from a tapered fiber for the polygon mode formation. The resulting high intracavity optical power of the polygon modes triggers second harmonic generation at high efficiency. With the combined advantage of high mechanical Q cavity optomechanical oscillation was observed for the first time. Finally, we observe frequency microcomb generation from the polygon modes with an ultra stable taper-on-disk coupling mechanism.

High-index-contrast single-mode optical waveguides fabricated on lithium niobate by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE)

We report fabrication of low loss single mode waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) cladded by a layer of SiO2. Our technique, termed photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE), relies on patterning of a chromium film into the mask shape by femtosecond laser micromachining and subsequent chemo-mechanical etching of the lithium niobate thin film. The high-index-contrast single mode waveguide is measured to have a propagation loss of 0.13 dB/cm. Furthermore, waveguide tapers are fabricated for boosting the coupling efficiency.

Local Molecular Gas toward the Aquila Rift Region

We present the results of a ~250 square degrees CO mapping (+26d 4.1x10^5 Msun in the whole region. In fact, the mass of the molecular gas is dominated by the W40 giant molecular cloud (GMC) at ~474 pc (~1.4x10^5 Msun) and the GMC complex G036.0+01.0 at ~560-670 pc (~2.0x10^5 Msun), while the MCs at ~220-260pc have gas masses of 10^2-10^3 Msun. Interestingly, an ~80pc long filamentary MC G044.0-02.5 at a distance of ~404 pc shows a systematic velocity gradient along and perpendicular to the major axis of the filament. The HI gas with the enhanced emission has the similar spatial morphologies and velocity features compared to the corresponding CO structure, indicating that the large-scale converging HI flows are probably responsible for the formation of the MC. Meanwhile, the long filamentary MC consists of many sub-filaments with the lengths ranging from ~0.5 pc to several pc, as well as prevalent networks of filaments in other large-scale local MCs.

Exceptional point enhanced optical gyroscope in mechanical PT-symmetric system

As an important device for detecting rotation, high sensitivity gyroscope is required for practical applications. In recent years, exceptional point (EP) shows its potential in enhancing the sensitivity of sensing in optical cavity. Here we propose an EP enhanced optical gyroscope based on mechanical PT-symmetric system in microcavity. By pumping the two optical modes with different colors, i.e. blue and red detuning, an effective mechanical PT-symmetric system can be obtained and the system can be prepared in EP with appropriate parameters. Compared with the situation of diabolic point, EP can enhance the sensitivity of gyroscope with more than one order of magnitude in the weak perturbation regime. The results show the gyroscope can be enhanced effectively by monitoring mechanical modes rather than optical modes. Our work provides a promising approach to design gyroscope with higher sensitivity in optical microcavity and has potential values in some fields including fundamental physic and precision measurement.

Efficient light coupling between an ultra-low loss lithium niobate waveguide and an adiabatically tapered single mode optical fiber

A lithium niobate on insulator ridge waveguide allows constructing high-density photonic integrated circuits thanks to its small bending radius offered by the high index contrast. Meanwhile, the significant mode-field mismatch between an optical fiber and the single-mode lithium niobate waveguide leads to low coupling efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate, both numerically and experimentally, that the problem can be solved with a tapered single mode fiber of an optimized mode field profile. Numerical simulation shows that the minimum coupling losses for the TE and TM mode are 0.32 dB and 0.86 dB, respectively. Experimentally, though without anti-reflection coating, the measured coupling losses for TE and TM mode are 1.32 dB and 1.88 dB, respectively. Our technique paves a way for a broad range of on-chip lithium niobate applications.

Health Assessment and Prognostics Based on Higher Order Hidden Semi-Markov Models

This paper presents a new and flexible prognostics framework based on a higher order hidden semi-Markov model (HOHSMM) for systems or components with unobservable health states and complex transition dynamics. The HOHSMM extends the basic hidden Markov model (HMM) by allowing the hidden state to depend on its more distant history and assuming generally distributed state duration. An effective Gibbs sampling algorithm is designed for statistical inference of an HOHSMM. The performance of the proposed HOHSMM sampler is evaluated by conducting a simulation experiment. We further design a decoding algorithm to estimate the hidden health states using the learned model. Remaining useful life (RUL) is predicted using a simulation approach given the decoded hidden states. The practical utility of the proposed prognostics framework is demonstrated by a case study on NASA turbofan engines. The results show that the HOHSMM-based prognostics framework provides good hidden health state assessment and RUL estimation for complex systems.

Multimode interference induced optical nonreciprocity and routing in an optical microcavity

Optical nonreciprocity and routing using optocal microcavities draw much atttention in recent years. Here, we report the results of the study on the nonreciprocity and routing using optomechanical multimode interference in an optical microcavity. The optomechanical system used here possesses multi-optical modes and a mechanical mode. Optomechanical induced transparency and absorption, appear in the system due to the interference between different paths. The system can present significant nonreciprocity and routing properties when appropriate parameters of the system are set. We design quantum devices, such as diode, circulator and router, which are important applications. Our work shows that optomechanical multimode system can be used as a promising platform for buliding photonic and quantum network.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Based Wireless Communication: Antenna Design, Prototyping and Experimental Results

One of the key enablers of future wireless communications is constituted by massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which can improve the spectral efficiency by orders of magnitude. However, in existing massive MIMO systems, conventional phased arrays are used for beamforming, which result in excessive power consumption and hardware cost. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been considered as one of the revolutionary technologies to enable energy-efficient and smart wireless communications, which is a two-dimensional structure with a large number of passive elements. In this paper, we propose and develop a new type of high-gain yet low-cost RIS having 256 elements. The proposed RIS combines the functions of phase shift and radiation together on an electromagnetic surface, where positive intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes are used to realize 2-bit phase shifting for beamforming. Based on this radical design, the world's first wireless communication prototype using RIS having 256 2-bit elements is designed and developed. Specifically, the prototype conceived consists of modular hardware and flexible software, including the hosts for parameter setting and data exchange, the universal software radio peripherals (USRPs) for baseband and radio frequency (RF) signal processing, as well as the RIS for signal transmission and reception. Our performance evaluation confirms the feasibility and efficiency of RISs in future wireless communications. More particularly, it is shown that a 21.7 dBi antenna gain can be obtained by the proposed RIS at 2.3 GHz, while at the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency, i.e., 28.5 GHz, a 19.1 dBi antenna gain can be achieved. Furthermore, the over-the-air (OTA) test results show that the RIS-based wireless communication prototype developed is capable of significantly reducing the power consumption.

Frequency-tuning induced state transfer in optical microcavities

Quantum state transfer in optical microcavities plays an important role in quantum information processing, and is essential in many optical devices, such as optical frequency converter and diode. Existing schemes are effective and realized by tuning the coupling strengths between modes. However, such approaches are severely restricted due to the small amount of strength that can be tuned and the difficulty to perform the tuning in some situations, such as on-chip microcavity system. Here, we propose a novel approach that realizes the state transfer between different modes in optical microcavities by tuning the frequency of an intermediate mode. We showed that for typical functions of frequency-tuning, such as linear and periodic functions, the state transfer can be realized successfully with different features. To optimize the process, we use gradient descent technique to find an optimal tuning function for the fast and perfect state transfer. We also showed that our approach has significant nonreciprocity with appropriate tuning variables, where one can unidirectionally transfer a state from one mode to another, but the inverse direction transfer is forbidden. This work provides an effective method for controlling the multimode interactions in on-chip optical microcavities via simple operations and it has practical applications in all-optical devices.

A compact and efficient three-dimensional microfluidic mixer

Microfluidic mixing is a fundamental functionality in most lab on a chip (LOC) systems, whereas realization of efficient mixing is challenging in microfluidic channels due to the small Reynolds numbers. Here, we design and fabricate a compact three-dimensional (3D) micromixer to enable efficient mixing at various flow rates. The performance of the fabricated micromixer was examined using blue and red inks. The extreme flexibility in fabricating microfluidic structures of arbitrary 3D geometries using femtosecond laser micromachining allows us to tackle the major disadvantageous effects for optimizing the mixing efficiency.

Manipulation of optomechanically induced transparency and absorption by indirectly coupling to an auxiliary cavity mode

We theoretically study the optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) and absorption(OMIA) phenomena in a single microcavity optomechanical system, assisted by an indirectly-coupledauxiliary cavity mode. We show that the interference effect between the two optical modes playsan important role and can be used to control the multiple-pathway induced destructive or construc-tive interference effect. The three-pathway interference could induce an absorption dip within thetransparent window in the red sideband driving regime, while we can switch back and forth betweenOMIT and OMIA with the four-pathway interference. The conversion between the transparencypeak and absorption dip can be achieved by tuning the relative amplitude and phase of the multiplelight paths interference. Our system proposes a new platform to realize multiple pathways inducedtransparency and absorption in a single microcavity and a feasible way for realizing all-opticalinformation processing.

Efficient Electro-optical Tuning of Optical Frequency Microcomb on a Monolithically Integrated High-Q Lithium Niobate Microdisk

We demonstrate efficient tuning of a monolithically integrated lithium niobate microdisk (LN) optical frequency microcomb. Utilizing the high optical quality (Q) factor (i.e., Q~7.1*10^6) of the microdisk, the microcomb spans over a spectral bandwidth of ~200 nm at a pump power as low as 20.4 mW. Combining the large eletro-optic coefficient of LN and optimum design of the geometry of microelectrodes, we demonstrate electro-optical tuning of the comb with a spectral range of 400 pm and a tuning efficiency of ~38 pm/100V.
