Topological phase in a two-dimensional metallic heavy-fermion system

We report on a topological insulating state in a heavy-fermion system away from half-filling, which is hidden within a ferromagnetic metallic phase. In this phase, the cooperation of the RKKY interaction and the Kondo effect, together with the spin-orbit coupling, induces a spin-selective gap, bringing about topologically non-trivial properties. This topological phase is robust against a change in the chemical potential in a much wider range than the gap size. We analyze these remarkable properties by using dynamical mean field theory and the numerical renormalization group. Its topological properties support a gapless chiral edge mode, which exhibits a non-Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior due to the coupling with bulk ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. We also propose that the effects of the spin fluctuations on the edge mode can be detected via the NMR relaxation time measurement.

Proximity effects in a topological-insulator/Mott-insulator heterostructure

We investigate proximity effects in a correlated heterostructure of a two-dimensional Mott insulator (MI) and a topological insulator (TI) by employing inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory. We show that the edge state of the TI induces strongly renormalized mid-gap states inside the MI region, which still have a remnant of the helical energy-spectrum. The penetration of low-energy electrons, which is controlled by the interface tunneling $V$, largely enhances the electron mass inside the MI and also splits a single Dirac-cone at edge sites into the spatially-separated two Dirac-cones in the strong $V$ region.

Topological antiferromagnetic phase in a correlated Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model

Topological properties of antiferromagnetic phases are studied for a correlated topological band insulator by applying the dynamical mean field theory to an extended Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model including the Hubbard interaction. The calculation of the magnetic moment and the spin Chern number confirms the existence of a non-trivial antiferromagnetic (AF) phase beyond the Hartree-Fock theory. In particular, we uncover the intriguing fact that the topologically non-trivial AF phase is essentially stabilized by correlation effects but not by the Hartree shifts alone. This counterintuitive effect is demonstrated, through a comparison with the Hartree-Fock results, and should apply for generic topological insulators with strong correlations.

Ferromagnetic state in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

In our recent study, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 086402 (2012), we have revealed the intriguing properties of the ferromagnetic state in the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling in infinite dimensions: within the ferromagnetic metallic phase, the minority conduction electrons form a gap at the Fermi energy and do not participate in transport irrespective of interaction strength and filling. This half-metallic state is referred to as a spin-selective Kondo insulator. We here show that the spin-selective Kondo insulator can also be realized in the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model by studying static and dynamical quantities with the density matrix renormalization group. The emergence of the spin selective Kondo insulator both in one and infinite dimensions certainly demonstrates that this mechanism is quite general and ubiquitous for the ferromagnetic state in the Kondo lattice model irrespective of the dimensionality of the system.

Many-body effects in a Bose-Fermi mixture

We investigate many-body effects on a mixture of interacting bosons and fermions loaded in an optical lattice using a generalized dynamical mean field theory combined with the numerical renormalization group. We show that strong correlation effects emerge in the presence of bosonic superfluidity, leading to a renormalized peak structure near the Fermi level in the density of states for fermions. Remarkably, this kind of strong renormalization appears not only in the metallic phase but also in the insulating phases of fermions such as in the empty/filled band limit. A systematic analysis of the relation between the quasiparticle weight and the strength of superfluidity reveals that the renormalization effect is indeed caused by the boson degrees of freedom. It is found that such renormalization is also relevant to a supersolid phase consisting of a density wave ordering of fermions accompanied by bosonic superfluidity. This sheds light on the origin of the peak structure in the supersolid phase.

Reentrant topological transitions in a quantum wire/superconductor system with quasiperiodic lattice modulation

We study the condition for a topological superconductor (TS) phase with end Majorana fermions to appear when a quasiperiodic lattice modulation is applied to a one-dimensional quantum wire with strong spin-orbit interaction situated under a magnetic field and in proximity to a superconductor. By density-matrix renormalization group analysis, we find that multiple topological phases with Majorana end modes are realized in finite ranges of the filling factor, showing a sequence of reentrant transitions as the chemical potential is tuned. The locations of these phases reflect the structure of bands in the non-interacting case, which exhibits a distinct self-similar structure. The stability of the TS in the presence of an on-site interaction or a harmonic trap potential is also discussed.

Crossover between two different Kondo couplings in side-coupled double quantum dots

We study the Kondo effect in side-coupled double quantum dots with particular focus on the crossover between two distinct singlet ground states, using the numerical renormalization group. The crossover occurs as the quantized energy level of the embedded dot, which is connected directly to the leads, is varied. In the parameter region where the embedded dot becomes almost empty or doubly occupied, the local moment emerging in the other dot at the side of the path for the current is screened via a superexchange process by the conduction electrons tunneling through the embedded dot. In contrast, in the other region where the embedded dot is occupied by a single electron, the local moment emerges also in the embedded dot, and forms a singlet bond with the moment in the side dot. Furthermore, we derive two different Kondo Hamiltonians for these limits carrying out the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, and show that they describe the essential feature of the screening for each case.

Collision of one-dimensional fermion clusters

We study cluster-cluster collisions in one-dimensional Fermi systems with particular emphasis on the non-trivial quantum effects of the collision dynamics. We adopt the Fermi-Hubbard model and the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method to simulate collision dynamics between two fermion clusters of different spin states with contact interaction. It is elucidated that the quantum effects become extremely strong with the interaction strength, leading to the transmittance much more enhanced than expected from semiclassical approximation. We propose a concise model based on one-to-one collisions, which unveils the origin of the quantum effects and also explains the overall properties of the simulation results clearly. Our concise model can quite widely describe the one-dimensional collision dynamics with contact interaction. Some potential applications, such as repeated collisions, are addressed.

Criteria of off-diagonal long-range order in Bose and Fermi systems based on the Lee-Yang cluster expansion method

The quantum-statistical cluster expansion method of Lee and Yang is extended to investigate off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) in one- and multi-component mixtures of bosons or fermions. Our formulation is applicable to both a uniform system and a trapped system without local-density approximation and allows systematic expansions of one- and multi-particle reduced density matrices in terms of cluster functions which are defined for the same system with Boltzmann statistics. Each term in this expansion can be associated with a Lee-Yang graph. We elucidate a physical meaning of each Lee-Yang graph; in particular, for a mixture of ultracold atoms and bound dimers, an infinite sum of the ladder-type Lee-Yang 0-graphs is shown to lead to Bose-Einstein condensation of dimers below the critical temperature. In the case of Bose statistics, an infinite series of Lee-Yang 1-graphs is shown to converge and gives the criteria of ODLRO at the one-particle level. Applications to a dilute Bose system of hard spheres are also made. In the case of Fermi statistics, an infinite series of Lee-Yang 2-graphs is shown to converge and gives the criteria of ODLRO at the two-particle level. Applications to a two-component Fermi gas in the tightly bound limit are also made.

Perron-Frobenius theorem on the superfluid transition of an ultracold Fermi gas

The Perron-Frobenius theorem is applied to identify the superfluid transition of a two-component Fermi gas with a zero-range s-wave interaction. According to the quantum cluster expansion method of Lee and Yang, the grand partition function is expressed by the Lee-Yang contracted 0-graphs. A singularity of an infinite series of ladder-type Lee-Yang contracted 0-graphs is analyzed. We point out that the singularity is governed by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of a certain primitive matrix which is defined in terms of the two-body cluster functions and the Fermi distribution functions. As a consequence, it is found that there exists a unique fugacity at the phase transition point, which implies that there is no fragmentation of Bose-Einstein condensates of dimers and Cooper pairs at the ladder-approximation level of Lee-Yang contracted 0-graphs. An application to a Bose-Einstein condensate of strongly bounded dimers is also made.

Electronic and magnetic properties in strongly correlated heterostructures

We present a theoretical study of a model heterostructure for a Mott-insulator sandwiched between two band insulators, such as SrTiO3/LaTiO3. Particular emphasis is given on the interplay between magnetism and inhomogeneous charge distributions. Our mean-field analysis of the generalized Hubbard model displays numerous ordered phases in the ground-state phase diagram. In particular, we find a canted antiferromagnetic state near the interface when antiferromagnetic-ordering exists inside the Mott insulator. A checkerboard charge-ordering proposed previously is also stabilized for large long-range Coulomb interactions. Regarding its origin we also point out the importance of interlayer spin-mediated interactions. It is further shown that such a strong spin-charge coupling gives rise to pronounced magnetic/charge order phase transitions in external magnetic fields: a firstorder metamagnetic transition and a reentrant charge-order transition with checkerboard pattern. The mechanisms stabilizing these intriguing phases are explored through a detailed analysis of the physical quantities with special focus on the spin-charge interplay.

Spin-selective Kondo insulator: Cooperation of ferromagnetism and Kondo effect

We propose the notion of spin-selective Kondo insulator, which provides a fundamental mechanism to describe the ferromagnetic phase of the Kondo lattice model with antiferromagnetic coupling. This unveils a remarkable feature of the ferromagnetic metallic phase: the majority-spin conduction electrons show metallic- while the minority-spin electrons show insulating-behavior. The resulting Kondo gap in the minority spin sector, which is due to the cooperation of ferromagnetism and partial Kondo screening, evidences a dynamically-induced commensurability for a combination of minority-spin electrons and parts of localized spins. Furthermore, this mechanism predicts a nontrivial relation between the macroscopic quantities such as electron magnetization, spin polarization and electron filling.

Spin-Depairing Transition of Attractive Fermi Gases on a Ring Driven by Synthetic Gauge Fields

Motivated by the recent experimental realization of synthetic gauge fields in ultracold atoms, we investigate one-dimensional attractive Fermi gases with a time-dependent gauge flux on the spin sector. By combining the methods of the Bethe ansatz with complex twists and Landau-Dykhne, it is shown that a spin-depairing transition occurs, which may represent a nonequilibrium transition from fermionic superfluids to normal states with spin currents caused by a many-body quantum tunneling. For the case of the Hubbard ring at half filling, our finding forms a dual concept with the dielectric breakdown of the Mott insulator discussed in Phys. Rev. B 81, 033103 (2010). We analyze cases of arbitrary filling and continuum model, and show how the filling affects the transition probability.

Topological phases and delocalization of quantum walks in random environments

We investigate one-dimensional (1D) discrete time quantum walks (QWs) with spatially or temporally random defects as a consequence of interactions with random environments. We focus on the QWs with chiral symmetry in a topological phase, and reveal that chiral symmetry together with bipartite nature of the QWs brings about intriguing behaviors such as coexistence of topologically protected edge states at zero energy and Anderson transitions in the 1D chiral class at non-zero energy in their dynamics. Contrary to the previous studies, therefore, the spatially disordered QWs can avoid complete localization due to the Anderson transition. It is further confirmed that the edge states are robust for spatial disorder but not for temporal disorder.

Correlation effects on a topological insulator at finite temperatures

We analyze the effects of the local Coulomb interaction on a topological band insulator (TBI) by applying the dynamical mean field theory to a generalized Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model having electron correlations. It is elucidated how the correlation effects modify electronic properties in the TBI phase at finite temperatures. In particular, the band inversion character of the TBI inevitably leads to the large reduction of the spectral gap via the renormalization effect, which results in the strong temperature-dependence of the spin Hall conductivity. We clarify that a quantum phase transition from the TBI to a trivial Mott insulator, if it is nonmagnetic, is of first order with a hysteresis. This is confirmed via the interaction dependence of the double occupancy and the spectral function. A magnetic instability is also addressed. All these results imply that the spectral gap does not close at the transition.

Quantum effects on one-dimensional collision dynamics of fermion clusters

Recently, many experiments with cold atomic gases have been conducted from interest in the non-equilibrium dynamics of correlated quantum systems. Of these experiments, the mixing dynamics of fermion clusters motivates us to research cluster-cluster collision dynamics in one-dimensional Fermi systems. We adopt the one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model and apply the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. We simulate collisions between two fermion clusters of spin-up and spin-down, and calculate reflectance of the clusters R changing the particle number in each cluster and the interaction strength between two fermions with up and down spins. We also evaluate the quasi-classical (independent collision) reflectance R^{qc} to compare it with R. The quasi-classical picture is quantitatively valid in the limit of weak interaction, but it is not valid when interaction is strong.

Orbital Order, Metal Insulator Transition, and Magnetoresistance-Effect in the two-orbital Hubbard model

We study the effects of temperature and magnetic field on a two-orbital Hubbard model within dynamical mean field theory. We focus on the quarter filled system, which is a special point in the phase diagram due to orbital degeneracy. At this particular filling the model exhibits two different long-range order mechanisms, namely orbital order and ferromagnetism. Both can cooperate but do not rely on each other's presence, creating a rich phase diagram. Particularly, in the vicinity of the phase transition to an orbitally ordered ferromagnetic state, we observe a strong magnetoresistance effect. Besides the low temperature phase transitions, we also observe a crossover between a paramagnetic insulating and a paramagnetic metallic state for increasing Hund's coupling at high temperatures.

Interplay of Kondo and superconducting correlations in the nonequilibrium Andreev transport through a quantum dot

Using the modified perturbation theory, we theoretically study the nonequilibrium Andreev transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads (N-QD-S), which is strongly influenced by the Kondo and superconducting correlations. From the numerical calculation, we find that the renormalized couplings between the leads and the dot in the equilibrium states characterize the peak formation in the nonequilibrium differential conductance. In particular, in the Kondo regime, the enhancement of the Andreev transport via a Kondo resonance occurs in the differential conductance at a finite bias voltage, leading to an anomalous peak whose position is given by the renormalized parameters. In addition to the peak, we show that the energy levels of the Andreev bound states give rise to other peaks in the differential conductance in the strongly correlated N-QD-S system. All these features of the nonequilibrium transport are consistent with those in the recent experimental results [R. S. Deacon {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 104}, 076805 (2010); Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 12308 (2010)]. We also find that the interplay of the Kondo and superconducting correlations induces an intriguing pinning effect of the Andreev resonances to the Fermi level and its counter position.
