Highly charged ion X-rays from Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources

Radiation from the highly-charged ions contained in the plasma of Electron-Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources constitutes a very bright source of X-rays. Because the ions have a relatively low kinetic energy ($\approx 1$ eV) transitions can be very narrow, containing only small Doppler broadening. We describe preliminary accurate measurements of two and three-electron ions with Z=16--18. We show how these measurement can test sensitively many-body relativistic calculations or can be used as X-ray standards for precise measurements of X-ray transitions in exotic atoms.

Relativistic Calculation Of K$β$ Hypersatellite Energies and Transition Probabilities for Selected Atoms with 13<=Z<=80

Energies and transition probabilities of K$β$ hypersatellite lines are computed using the Dirac-Fock model for several values of $Z$ throughout the periodic table. The influence of the Breit interaction on the energy shifts from the corresponding diagram lines and on the K$β\_{1}^{\rm h}$/K$β\_{3}^{\rm h}$ intensity ratio is evaluated. The widths of the double-K hole levels are calculated for Al and Sc. The results are compared to experiment and to other theoretical calculations.

Dielectronic Resonance Method for Measuring Isotope Shifts

Longstanding problems in the comparison of very accurate hyperfine-shift measurements to theory were partly overcome by precise measurements on few-electron highly-charged ions. Still the agreement between theory and experiment is unsatisfactory. In this paper, we present a radically new way of precisely measuring hyperfine shifts, and demonstrate its effectiveness in the case of the hyperfine shift of $4s\_{1/2}$ and $4p\_{1/2}$ in $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{53+}$. It is based on the precise detection of dielectronic resonances that occur in electron-ion recombination at very low energy. This allows us to determine the hyperfine constant to around 0.6 meV accuracy which is on the order of 10%.

Relativistic calculation of L$β\_2$ satellite spectra of W and Au

L$β\_2$ X-ray satellite spectra of tungsten and gold are calculated using the Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock energies and compared with recent experimental data. New calculations of L$\_1$-L$\_3$M$\_5$ Coster-Kronig transition energies for tungsten are presented, confirming the origin of the L$β\_2$ visible satellites reported by two experimental groups. We found the value 5.09 eV for the average energy of the L$\_1$-L$\_3$M$\_5$ Coster-Kronig transition in tungsten. A detailed calculation of the L$β\_2$ and L$β\_{15}$ satellite spectra was performed for gold.

Characterization of a CCD array for Bragg spectroscopy

The average pixel distance as well as the relative orientation of an array of 6 CCD detectors have been measured with accuracies of about 0.5 nm and 50 $μ$rad, respectively. Such a precision satisfies the needs of modern crystal spectroscopy experiments in the field of exotic atoms and highly charged ions. Two different measurements have been performed by illuminating masks in front of the detector array by remote sources of radiation. In one case, an aluminum mask was irradiated with X-rays and in a second attempt, a nanometric quartz wafer was illuminated by a light bulb. Both methods gave consistent results with a smaller error for the optical method. In addition, the thermal expansion of the CCD detectors was characterized between -105 C and -40 C.

From heavy ions to exotic atoms

We review a number of experiments and theoretical calculations on heavy ions and exotic atoms, which aim at providing informations on fundamental interactions. Among those are propositions of experiments for parity violation measurements in heavy ions and high-precision mesurements of He-like transition energies in highly charged ions. We also describe recent experiments on pionic atoms, that make use of highly-charged ion transitions to obtain accurate measurements of strong interaction shift and width.

Relativistic correlation correction to the binding energies of the ground configuration of Beryllium-like, Neon-like, Magnesium-like and Argon-like ions

Total electronic correlation correction to the binding energies of the isoelectronic series of Beryllium, Neon, Magnesium and Argon, are calculated in the framework of relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. Convergence of the correlation energies is studied as the active set of orbitals is increased. The Breit interaction is treated fully self-consistently. The final results can be used in the accurately determination of atomic masses from highly charged ions data obtained in Penning-trap experiments.

On the characterisation of a Bragg spectrometer with X-rays from an ECR source

Narrow X-ray lines from helium-like argon emitted from a dedicated ECR source have been used to determine the response function of a Bragg crystal spectrometer equipped with large area spherically bent silicon (111) or quartz (10$\bar{1}$) crystals. The measured spectra are compared with simulated ones created by a ray-tracing code based on the expected theoretical crystal's rocking curve and the geometry of the experimental set-up.

Relativistic quantum dynamics in strong fields: Photon emission from heavy, few-electron ions

Recent progress in the study of the photon emission from highly-charged heavy ions is reviewed. These investigations show that high-$Z$ ions provide a unique tool for improving the understanding of the electron-electron and electron-photon interaction in the presence of strong fields. Apart from the bound-state transitions, which are accurately described in the framework of Quantum Electrodynamics, much information has been obtained also from the radiative capture of (quasi-) free electrons by high-$Z$ ions. Many features in the observed spectra hereby confirm the inherently relativistic behavior of even the simplest compound quantum systems in Nature.

X-ray energies of circular transitions and electrons screening in kaonic atoms

The QED contribution to the energies of the circular (n,l=n-1), 2 ≤ n ≤ 19 transitions have been calculated for several kaonic atoms throughout the periodic table, using the current world average kaon mass. Calculations were done in the framework of the Klein-Gordon equation, with finite nuclear size and all-order Uelhing vacuum polarization corrections, as well as Kallen and Sabry and Wichmann and Kroll corrections. These energy level values are compared with other computed values. The circular transition energies are compared with available measured and theoretical transition energy. Electron screening is evaluated using a Dirac-Fock model for the electronic part of the wave function. The effect of electronic wavefunction correlation is evaluated for the first time.

The nonrelativistic limit of Dirac-Fock codes: the role of Brillouin configurations

We solve a long standing problem with relativistic calculations done with the widely used Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock Method (MCDF). We show, using Relativistic Many-Body Perturbation Theory (RMBPT), how even for relatively high-$Z$, relaxation or correlation causes the non-relativistic limit of states of different total angular momentum but identical orbital angular momentum to have different energies. We show that only large scale calculations that include all single excitations, even those obeying the Brillouin's theorem have the correct limit. We reproduce very accurately recent high-precision measurements in F-like Ar, and turn then into precise test of QED. We obtain the correct non-relativistic limit not only for fine structure but also for level energies and show that RMBPT calculations are not immune to this problem.

High Resolution He-like Argon And Sulfur Spectra From The PSI ECRIT

We present new results on the X-ray spectroscopy of multicharged argon, sulfur and chlorine obtained with the Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Trap (ECRIT) in operation at the Paul Scherrer Institut (Villigen, Switzerland). We used a Johann-type Bragg spectrometer with a spherically-bent crystal, with an energy resolution of about 0.4 eV. The ECRIT itself is of a hybrid type, with a superconducting split coil magnet, special iron inserts which provides the mirror field, and a permanent magnetic hexapole. The high frequency was provided by a 6.4 GHz microwave emitter. We obtained high intensity X-ray spectra of multicharged F-like to He-like argon, sulfur and chlorine with one 1s hole. In particular, we observed the $1s2s^{3}S_1 \to 1s^2^{1}S_0 M1$ and $1s2p^{3}P_2 \to 1s^2^{1}S_0 M2$ transitions in He-like argon, sulfur and chlorine with unprecedented statistics and resolution. The energies of the observed lines are being determined with good accuracy using the He-like M1 line as a reference.

Toward high-precision values of the self energy of non-S states in hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions

The method and status of a study to provide numerical, high-precision values of the self-energy level shift in hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions is described. Graphs of the self energy in hydrogen-like ions with nuclear charge number between 20 and 110 are given for a large number of states. The self-energy is the largest contribution of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) to the energy levels of these atomic systems. These results greatly expand the number of levels for which the self energy is known with a controlled and high precision. Applications include the adjustment of the Rydberg constant and atomic calculations that take into account QED effects.

Exotic atoms

In this paper I review a number of recent results in the field of exotic atoms. Recent experiments or ongoing experiments with muonic, pionic and antiprotonic hydrogen, as well as recent measurement of the pion mass are described. These experiments provide information about nucleon-pion or nucleon-antinucleon interaction as well as information on the proton structure (charge or magnetic moment distribution).

Interelectronic-interaction effect on the transition probability in high-Z He-like ions

The interelectronic-interaction effect on the transition probabilities in high-Z He-like ions is investigated within a systematic quantum electrodynamic approach. The calculation formulas for the interelectronic-interaction corrections of first order in 1/Z are derived using the two-time Green function method. These formulas are employed for numerical evaluations of the magnetic transition probabilities in heliumlike ions. The results of the calculations are compared with experimental values and previous calculations.

Low-Energy X-Ray Standards from Hydrogenlike Pionic Atoms

We demonstrate the first step of a complete program, which consists in establishing an x-ray energy standard scale with the use of few-body atoms, in the few keV range. Light pionic and muonic atoms as well as one and two-electron ions from electron-cyclotron ion sources are used. The transition energies are calculable from quantum-electrodynamics, meaning that only a very limited subset need be measured and compared with theory, while providing a large number of standard lines. Here we show that circular transitions in pionic neon atoms, completely stripped from their electrons, reveal spectral lines which are narrow, symmetric, and well reproducible. We use these lines for the energy determination of transition energies in complex electronic systems, like the K1,2 transitions in metallic Ti, which may serve as secondary standard.
