Fermi-surface topology of the iron pnictide LaFe$_2$P$_2$

We report on a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the iron pnictide LaFe$_2$P$_2$. Our extensive density-functional band-structure calculations can well explain the measured angular-dependent dHvA frequencies. As salient feature, we observe only one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface sheet, i.e., a hole-like Fermi-surface cylinder around $Γ$, essential for $s_\pm$ pairing, is missing. In spite of considerable mass enhancements due to many-body effects, LaFe$_2$P$_2$ shows no superconductivity. This is likely caused by the absence of any nesting between electron and hole bands.

Fermi Surface of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$ across the Quantum Critical Point

We have measured de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_x$, $0 \le x \le 0.05$, at high fields for samples on both sides of the quantum critical point at $x_c=0.035$. For all samples we observe only those oscillations associated with a single small hole band with magnetic breakdown orbits of the reconstructed Fermi surface evident for $x x_c$ is further evidence for strong fluctuation scattering of these charge carriers well into the paramagnetic regime. We find no significant mass enhancement of the carriers in the single observed band at any $x$. An anomalous field dependence of the dHvA signal for our $x=0.035$ crystal at particular orientations of the magnetic field is identified as due to magnetic breakdown that we speculate results from a field induced SDW transition at high fields.

Optical conductivity and superconductivity in LaSb$_2$

We have measured the resistivity, optical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility of LaSb$_2$ to search for clues as to the cause of the extraordinarily large linear magnetoresistance and to explore the properties of the superconducting state. We find no evidence in the optical conductivity for the formation of a charge density wave state above 20 K despite the highly layered crystal structure. In addition, only small changes to the optical reflectivity with magnetic field are observed indicating that the MR is due to scattering rate, not charge density, variations with field. Although a superconducting ground state was previously reported below a critical temperature of 0.4 K, we observe, at ambient pressure, a fragile superconducting transition with an onset at 2.5 K. In crystalline samples, we find a high degree of variability with a minority of samples displaying a full Meissner fraction below 0.2 K and fluctuations apparent up to 2.5 K. The application of pressure stabilizes the superconducting transition and reduces the anisotropy of the superconducting phase.

Unusual metamagnetism in CeIrIn$_5$

We report a high field investigation (up to 45 T) of the metamagnetic transition in CeIrIn$_5$ with resistivity and de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in the temperature range 0.03-1 K. As the magnetic field is increased the resistivity increases, reaches a maximum at the metamagnetic critical field, and falls precipitously for fields just above the transition, while the amplitude of all measurable dHvA frequencies are significantly attenuated near the metamagnetic critical field. However, the dHvA frequencies and cyclotron masses are not substantially altered by the transition. In the low field state, the resistivity is observed to increase toward low temperatures in a singular fashion, a behavior that is rapidly suppressed above the transition. Instead, in the high field state, the resistivity monotonically increases with temperature with a dependence that is more singular than the iconic Fermi-liquid, temperature-squared, behavior. Both the damping of the dHvA amplitudes and the increased resistivity near the metamagnetic critical field indicate an increased scattering rate for charge carriers consistent with critical fluctuation scattering in proximity to a phase transition. The dHvA amplitudes do not uniformly recover above the critical field, with some hole-like orbits being entirely suppressed at high fields. These changes, taken as a whole, suggest that the metamagnetic transition in CeIrIn$_5$ is associated with the polarization and localization of the heaviest of quasiparticles on the hole-like Fermi surface.

Fermi surface evolution through a heavy fermion superconductor-to-antiferromagnet transition: de Haas-van Alphen effect in Cd-substituted CeCoIn$_5$

We report the results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements in Cd doped CeCoIn$_5$ and LaCoIn$_5$. Cd doping is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$, whose effect can be reversed with applied pressure. We find a slight but systematic change of the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping in both compounds, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the addition of holes. The frequencies and effective masses are close to those found in the nominally pure compounds with similar changes apparent in the Ce and La compounds with Cd substitution. We observe no abrupt changes to the Fermi surface in the high field paramagnetic state for $x \sim x_c$ corresponding to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at H=0 in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$. Our results rule out $f-$electron localization as the mechanism for the tuning of the ground state in CeCoIn$_5$ with Cd doping.

High Field de Haas - van Alphen Studies of the Fermi Surfaces of LaMIn$_{5}$ (M = Co, Rh, Ir)

We report measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect on a series of compounds, LaMIn$_{5}$ (M = Co, Rh, Ir). The results show that each of the Co and Ir Fermi surfaces (FSs) exhibit some portions that are two dimensional and some portions that are three dimensional. The most two dimensional character is exhibited in LaCoIn$_{5}$, less two dimensional behavior is seen in LaIrIn$_{5}$, no part of Fermi surface of LaRhIn$_{5}$ is found to have a two dimensional character. Thus the two dimensionality of portions of the FSs is largely determined by the d character of the energy bands while all of the effective masses remain $\leq$ 1.2. This fact has implications for the causes of the heavy fermion nature of superconductivity and magnetism in the Ce-based compounds having the similar composition and structure. All of the measurements were performed at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory using either cantilever magnetometry or field modulation methods.

High Magnetic Field Sensor Using LaSb2

The magnetotransport properties of single crystals of the highly anisotropic layered metal LaSb2 are reported in magnetic fields up to 45 T with fields oriented both parallel and perpendicular to the layers. Below 10 K the perpendicular magnetoresistance of LaSb2} becomes temperature independent and is characterized by a 100-fold linear increase in resistance between 0 and 45 T with no evidence of quantum oscillations down to 50 mK. The Hall resistivity is hole-like and gives a high field carrier density of n ~ 3x10^20 cm^-3. The feasibility of using LaSb2 for magnetic field sensors is discussed.

New Aspects of the Temperature-Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of CeB6

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to the field-induced high temperature antiferroquadrupolar magnetically ordered phase transition is CeB6 from 0 to 60 T using a variety of techniques. It is found that the field-dependent phase separation line becomes re-entrant above 35 T and below 10 K. Measurements of resonant ultra-sound, specific heat and neutron diffraction show conclusively that the zero-field temperature-dependent phase transition is to a state with no ordered dipole moments, but with second order transition signatures in both sound attenuation and specific heat.

de Haas - van Alphen measurements on CeRhIn5 under pressure

Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect have been carried out on the heavy fermion anti-ferromagnet CeRhIn5 at temperatures between 25 mK and 500 mK under pressure. We present some preliminary results of our measurements to track the evolution of the Fermi surface as the pressure induced superconducting transition is approached.

Field Suppression of the Density-of-States: A Mechanism for Large Linear Magnetoresistance

Hall, resistivity, magnetization, and thermoelectric power measurements were performed on single crystals of the highly anisotropic layered metal LaSb2. A 100-fold linear magnetoresistance (MR) was observed in fields up to 45 T, with no indication of saturation. We show that the MR is associated with a magnetic-field-dependent holelike carrier density, n(H) \propto 1/H. The effect is orbital, depending upon the component of the magnetic field normal to the layers. At low temperature, a field of 9 T reduces the carrier density by more than an order of magnitude.

Anomalous Superconducting Properties and Field Induced Magnetism in CeCoIn5

In the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3K) the critical field is large, anisotropic and displays hysteresis. The magnitude of the critical-field anisotropy in the a-c plane can be as large as 70 kOe and depends on orientation. Critical field measurements in the (110) plane suggest 2D superconductivity, whereas conventional effective mass anisotropy is observed in the (100) plane. Two distinct field-induced magnetic phases are observed: Ha appears deep in the superconducting phase, while Hb intersects Hc2 at T=1.4 K and extends well above Tc. These observations suggest the possible realization of a direct transition from ferromagnetism to Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductivity in CeCoIn5.

Localized f electrons in CexLa1-xRhIn5: dHvA Measurements

Measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CexLa1-xRhIn5 reveal that the Ce 4f electrons remain localized for all x, with the mass enhancement and progressive loss of one spin from the de Haas-van Alphen signal resulting from spin fluctuation effects. This behavior may be typical of antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds, inspite of the fact that the 4f electron localization in CeRhIn5 is driven, in part, by a spin-density wave instability.

Fermi Surface Measurements on the Low Carrier Density Ferromagnet Ca1-xLaxB6 and SrB6

Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low density electron gas.

The Fermi surface of CeCoIn5: dHvA

Measurements of the de Haas - van Alphen effect in the normal state of the heavy Fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 have been carried out using a torque cantilever at temperatures ranging from 20 to 500 mK and in fields up to 18 tesla. Angular dependent measurements of the extremal Fermi surface areas reveal a more extreme two dimensional sheet than is found in either CeRhIn5 or CeIrIn5. The effective masses of the measured frequencies range from 9 to 20 m*/m0.

Electronic Structure of CeRhIn$_{5}$: dHvA and Energy Band Calculations

The de Haas - van Alphen effect and energy band calculations are used to study angular dependent extremal areas and effective masses of the Fermi surface of the highly correlated antiferromagnetic material CeRhIn$_5$. The agreement between experiment and theory is reasonable for the areas measured with the field applied along the (100) axis of the tetragonal structure, but disagree in size for the areas observed for the field applied along the (001) axis where the antiferromagnetic spin alignment is occurring. Detailed comparisons between experiment and theory are given.

Fermi Surface Properties of Low Concentration Ce$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$B$_{6}$: dHvA

The de Haas-van Alphen effect is used to study angular dependent extremal areas of the Fermi Surfaces (FS) and effective masses of Ce$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$B$% _{6}$ alloys for $x$ between 0 and 0.05. The FS of these alloys was previously observed to be spin polarized at low Ce concentration ($x$ = 0.05). This work gives the details of the initial development of the topology and spin polarization of the FS from that of unpolarized metallic LaB$_{6}$ to that of spin polarized heavy Fermion CeB$_{6}$ .

Magnetic Field Dependence of the Paramagnetic to the High Temperature Magnetically Ordered Phase Transition in CeB6

We have measured the magnetic field dependence of the paramagnetic to high temperature magnetically ordered phase transition TQ(H) in CeB6 from 2 to 30 T using cantilever magnetometry. It is found that the phase separation temperature continuously increases in field with an increasingly positive slope. In addition, we find that measurements in strong magnetic field gradients have no effect on the phase transition.

A Comment on ``Superconducting-Normal Phase Transition in (Ba1-xKx)BiO3, x = 0.40, 0.47'' by B. F. Woodfield, D. A. Wright, R. A. Fisher, N. E. Phillips and H. Y. Tang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4622 (1999)

This comment addresses criticisms of our PRL 82 (1999) p. 4532-4535 (cond-mat/9904288) raised by Woodfield et al. in their recent PRL. We find that the critical fields in single crystals of Ba1-xKxBiO3 (x = 0.4) have anomalous temperature dependecies which suggests that the superconducting phase transition in this material is not of order II.
