C*-Algebras over Topological Spaces: Filtrated K-Theory

We define the filtrated K-theory of a C*-algebra over a finite topological space X and explain how to construct a spectral sequence that computes the bivariant Kasparov theory over X in terms of filtrated K-theory. For finite spaces with totally ordered lattice of open subsets, this spectral sequence becomes an exact sequence as in the Universal Coefficient Theorem, with the same consequences for classification. We also exhibit an example where filtrated K-theory is not yet a complete invariant. We describe a space with four points and two C*-algebras over this space in the bootstrap class that have isomorphic filtrated K-theory but are not KK(X)-equivalent. For this particular space, we enrich filtrated K-theory by another K-theory functor, so that there is again a Universal Coefficient Theorem. Thus the enriched filtrated K-theory is a complete invariant for purely infinite, stable C*-algebras with this particular spectrum and belonging to the appropriate bootstrap class.

Equivariant Poincaré duality for quantum group actions

We extend the notion of Poincaré duality in KK-theory to the setting of quantum group actions. An important ingredient in our approach is the replacement of ordinary tensor products by braided tensor products. Along the way we discuss general properties of equivariant KK-theory for locally compact quantum groups, including the construction of exterior products. As an example, we prove that the standard Podleś sphere is equivariantly Poincaré dual to itself.

On Semi-Classical States of Quantum Gravity and Noncommutative Geometry

We construct normalizable, semi-classical states for the previously proposed model of quantum gravity which is formulated as a spectral triple over holonomy loops. The semi-classical limit of the spectral triple gives the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions. Also, time-independent lapse and shift fields emerge from the semi-classical states. Our analysis shows that the model might contain fermionic matter degrees of freedom. The semi-classical analysis presented in this paper does away with most of the ambiguities found in the initial semi-finite spectral triple construction. The cubic lattices play the role of a coordinate system and a divergent sequence of free parameters found in the Dirac type operator is identified as a certain inverse infinitesimal volume element.

Holonomy Loops, Spectral Triples & Quantum Gravity

We review the motivation, construction and physical interpretation of a semi-finite spectral triple obtained through a rearrangement of central elements of loop quantum gravity. The triple is based on a countable set of oriented graphs and the algebra consists of generalized holonomy loops in this set. The Dirac type operator resembles a global functional derivation operator and the interaction between the algebra of holonomy loops and the Dirac type operator reproduces the structure of a quantized Poisson bracket of general relativity. Finally we give a heuristic argument as to how a natural candidate for a quantized Hamiltonian might emerge from this spectral triple construction.

Deformations of algebroid stacks

In this paper we consider deformations of an algebroid stack on an etale groupoid. We construct a differential graded Lie algebra (DGLA) which controls this deformation theory. In the case when the algebroid is a twisted form of functions we show that this DGLA is quasiisomorphic to the twist of the DGLA of Hochschild cochains on the algebra of functions on the groupoid by the characteristic class of the corresponding gerbe.

C*-Algebras over Topological Spaces: The Bootstrap Class

We carefully define and study C*-algebras over topological spaces, possibly non-Hausdorff, and review some relevant results from point-set topology along the way. We explain the triangulated category structure on the bivariant Kasparov theory over a topological space. We introduce and describe an analogue of the bootstrap class for C*-algebras over a finite topological space.

Index Theory for Boundary Value Problems via Continuous Fields of C*-algebras

We prove an index theorem for boundary value problems in Boutet de Monvel's calculus on a compact manifold X with boundary. The basic tool is the tangent semigroupoid $\cT^-X$ generalizing the tangent groupoid defined by Connes in the boundaryless case, and an associated continuous field C*_r(\cT^-X) of C*-algebras over [0,1]. Its fiber in h=0, C*_r(T^-X), can be identified with the symbol algebra for Boutet de Monvel's calculus; for h\not=0 the fibers are isomorphic to the algebra K of compact operators. We therefore obtain a natural map K_0(C*_r(T^-X))=K_0(C_0(T*X)) -> K_0(K)=Z. Using deformation theory we show that this is the analytic index map. On the other hand, using ideas from noncommutative geometry, we construct the topological index map and prove that it coincides with the analytic index map.

Fibrations with noncommutative fibers

We study an analogue of fibrations of topological spaces with the homotopy lifting property in the setting of C*-algebra bundles. We then derive an analogue of the Leray-Serre spectral sequence to compute the K-theory of the fibration in terms of the cohomology of the base and the K-theory of the fibres. We present many examples which show that fibrations with noncommutative fibres appear in abundance in nature.

Principal noncommutative torus bundles

In this paper we study continuous bundles of C*-algebras which are non-commutative analogues of principal torus bundles. We show that all such bundles, although in general being very far away from being locally trivial bundles, are at least locally trivial with respect to a suitable bundle version of bivariant K-theory (denoted RKK-theory) due to Kasparov. Using earlier results of Echterhoff and Williams, we shall give a complete classification of principal non-commutative torus bundles up to equivariant Morita equivalence. We then study these bundles as topological fibrations (forgetting the group action) and give necessary and sufficient conditions for any non-commutative principal torus bundle being RKK-equivalent to a commutative one. As an application of our methods we shall also give a K-theoretic characterization of those principal torus-bundles with H-flux, as studied by Mathai and Rosenberg which possess "classical" T-duals.

Twisted cyclic theory, equivariant KK theory and KMS States

Recently, examples of an index theory for KMS states of circle actions were discovered, \cite{CPR2,CRT}. We show that these examples are not isolated. Rather there is a general framework in which we use KMS states for circle actions on a C*-algebra A to construct Kasparov modules and semifinite spectral triples. By using a residue construction analogous to that used in the semifinite local index formula we associate to these triples a twisted cyclic cocycle on a dense subalgebra of A. This cocycle pairs with the equivariant KK-theory of the mapping cone algebra for the inclusion of the fixed point algebra of the circle action in A. The pairing is expressed in terms of spectral flow between a pair of unbounded self adjoint operators that are Fredholm in the semifinite sense. A novel aspect of our work is the discovery of an eta cocycle that forms a part of our twisted residue cocycle. To illustrate our theorems we observe firstly that they incorporate the results in \cite{CPR2,CRT} as special cases. Next we use the Araki-Woods III_λrepresentations of the Fermion algebra to show that there are examples which are not Cuntz-Krieger systems.

Homological algebra in bivariant K-theory and other triangulated categories

Bivariant (equivariant) K-theory is the standard setting for non-commutative topology. We may carry over various techniques from homotopy theory and homological algebra to this setting. Here we do this for some basic notions from homological algebra: phantom maps, exact chain complexes, projective resolutions, and derived functors. We introduce these notions and apply them to examples from bivariant K-theory. An important observation of Beligiannis is that we can approximate our category by an Abelian category in a canonical way, such that our homological concepts reduce to the corresponding ones in this Abelian category. We compute this Abelian approximation in several interesting examples, where it turns out to be very concrete and tractable. The derived functors comprise the second tableau of a spectral sequence that, in favourable cases, converges towards Kasparov groups and other interesting objects. This mechanism is the common basis for many different spectral sequences. Here we only discuss the very simple 1-dimensional case, where the spectral sequences reduce to short exact sequences.

A new spectral triple over a space of connections

A new construction of a semifinite spectral triple on an algebra of holonomy loops is presented. The construction is canonically associated to quantum gravity and is an alternative version of the spectral triple presented in hep-th/08021784.

On Spectral Triples in Quantum Gravity II

A semifinite spectral triple for an algebra canonically associated to canonical quantum gravity is constructed. The algebra is generated by based loops in a triangulation and its barycentric subdivisions. The underlying space can be seen as a gauge fixing of the unconstrained state space of Loop Quantum Gravity. This paper is the second of two papers on the subject.

On Spectral Triples in Quantum Gravity I

This paper establishes a link between Noncommutative Geometry and canonical quantum gravity. A semi-finite spectral triple over a space of connections is presented. The triple involves an algebra of holonomy loops and a Dirac type operator which resembles a global functional derivation operator. The interaction between the Dirac operator and the algebra reproduces the Poisson structure of General Relativity. Moreover, the associated Hilbert space corresponds, up to a discrete symmetry group, to the Hilbert space of diffeomorphism invariant states known from Loop Quantum Gravity. Correspondingly, the square of the Dirac operator has, in terms of canonical quantum gravity, the form of a global area-squared operator. Furthermore, the spectral action resembles a partition function of Quantum Gravity. The construction is background independent and is based on an inductive system of triangulations. This paper is the first of two papers on the subject.

KK-theory and Spectral Flow in von Neumann Algebras

We present a definition of spectral flow relative to any norm closed ideal J in any von Neumann algebra N. Given a path D(t) of selfadjoint operators in N which are invertible in N/J, the spectral flow produces a class in K_0(J). In the case when N is semifinite, the numerical spectral flow of the path coincides with the value of trace on the associated K-class. Given a semifinite spectral triple (A,H,D) relative to a semifinite von Neumann algebra N, we construct a class [D] in KK^1(A,N') such that, for a unitary u in A, the von Neumann spectral flow between D and u*Du is equal to the Kasparov product of [u] and [D].
