Measurement of electrical properties of electrode materials for the bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers

Single gap (gas gap 2 mm) bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) modules of various sizes from 10 cm \times 10 cm to 1 m \times 1 m have been fabricated, characterized and optimized for efficiency and time resolution. Thin layers of different grades of silicone compound are applied to the inner electrode surfaces to make them smooth and also to reduce the surface resistivity. In the silicone coated RPCs an efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode of operation. Before fabrication of detectors the electrical properties such as bulk resistivity and surface resistivity of the electrode materials are measured carefully. Effectiveness of different silicone coating in modifying the surface resistivity was evaluated by an instrument developed for monitoring the I-V curve of a high resistive surface. The results indicate definite correlation of the detector efficiency for the atmospheric muons and the RPC noise rates with the surface resistivity and its variation with the applied bias voltage. It was also found that the surface resistivity varies for different grades of silicone material applied as coating, and the results are found to be consistent with the detector efficiency and noise rate measurements done with these RPCs.

Performances of silicone coated high resistive bakelite RPC

Performances of several single gap (gas gap 2 mm) prototype Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of high resistive (ρ \sim 1010 - 1012 Ω cm) bakelite, commercially available in India have been studied in recent times. To make the inner electrode surfaces smooth, a thin coating of silicone has been applied. An efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode. The induced charge distributions of those silicone coated RPC are studied and the results are presented. A numerical study on the effect of surface roughness of the resistive electrodes on the electric field of the device has been carried out using Garfield-neBEM code. A few results for a simplified model representing surface roughness, measured using a surface profilometer for the bakelite surfaces, have also been presented.

A Josephson Quantum Electron Pump

A macroscopic fluid pump works according to the law of Newtonian mechanics and transfers a large number of molecules per cycle (of the order of 10^23). By contrast, a nano-scale charge pump can be thought as the ultimate miniaturization of a pump, with its operation being subject to quantum mechanics and with only few electrons or even fractions of electrons transfered per cycle. It generates a direct current in the absence of an applied voltage exploiting the time-dependence of some properties of a nano-scale conductor. The idea of pumping in nanostructures was discussed theoretically a few decades ago [1-4]. So far, nano-scale pumps have been realised only in system exhibiting strong Coulombic effects [5-12], whereas evidence for pumping in the absence of Coulomb-blockade has been elusive. A pioneering experiment by Switkes et al. [13] evidenced the difficulty of modulating in time the properties of an open mesoscopic conductor at cryogenic temperatures without generating undesired bias voltages due to stray capacitances [14,15]. One possible solution to this problem is to use the ac Josephson effect to induce periodically time-dependent Andreev-reflection amplitudes in a hybrid normal-superconducting system [16]. Here we report the experimental detection of charge flow in an unbiased InAs nanowire (NW) embedded in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). In this system, pumping may occur via the cyclic modulation of the phase of the order parameter of different superconducting electrodes. The symmetry of the current with respect to the enclosed magnetic flux [17,18] and bias SQUID current is a discriminating signature of pumping. Currents exceeding 20 pA are measured at 250 mK, and exhibit symmetries compatible with a pumping mechanism in this setup which realizes a Josephson quantum electron pump (JQEP).

A novel technique for image steganography based on Block-DCT and Huffman Encoding

Image steganography is the art of hiding information into a cover image. This paper presents a novel technique for Image steganography based on Block-DCT, where DCT is used to transform original image (cover image) blocks from spatial domain to frequency domain. Firstly a gray level image of size M x N is divided into no joint 8 x 8 blocks and a two dimensional Discrete Cosine Transform (2-d DCT) is performed on each of the P = MN / 64 blocks. Then Huffman encoding is also performed on the secret messages/images before embedding and each bit of Huffman code of secret message/image is embedded in the frequency domain by altering the least significant bit of each of the DCT coefficients of cover image blocks. The experimental results show that the algorithm has a high capacity and a good invisibility. Moreover PSNR of cover image with stego-image shows the better results in comparison with other existing steganography approaches. Furthermore, satisfactory security is maintained since the secret message/image cannot be extracted without knowing decoding rules and Huffman table.

Electronic transport properties of ternary Cd1-xZnxS nanowire network

We present electronic transport characteristics of ternary alloy Cd1-xZnxS nanowire networks in the dark and under white light illumination. Compared to the negligible dark current, we observed a photocurrent enhancement up to 4 orders of magnitude at intensity of 460 mW/cm2. The time constant of the dynamic photoresponse is ~5 sec. The current-voltage characteristics at different intensities show Ohmic behavior at low bias and space charge limited conduction (SCLC) at higher bias voltages. The SCLC behavior and slow time response indicate that the charge transport is dominated by tunneling at the percolating inter-nanowire junctions.

Performances of linseed oil-free bakelite RPC prototypes with cosmic ray muons

A comparative study has been performed on Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of two different grades of bakelite paper laminates, produced and commercially available in India. The chambers, operated in the streamer mode using argon, tetrafluroethane and isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio, are tested for the efficiency and the stability with cosmic rays. A particular grade of bakelite (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions, was found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of > 96% continuously for more than 130 days. A thin coating of silicone fluid on the inner surfaces of the bakelite RPC is found to be necessary for operation of the detector.

Development of linseed oil-free bakelite resistive plate chambers

In this paper we would like to present a few characteristics of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of a particular grade of bakelite paper laminates (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), produced and commercially available in India. This particular grade is used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions. The chambers are tested with cosmic rays in the streamer mode using argon, tetrafluroethane and isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio. In the first set of detectors made with such grade, a thin coating of silicone fluid on the inner surfaces of the bakelite was found to be necessary for operation of the detector. Those silicone coated RPCs were found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of >90% continuously for a long period as reported earlier. Results of the crosstalk measurement of these silicone coated RPC will be presented in this paper. Very recently RPCs made with the same grade of bakelite but having better surface finish, are found to give equivalent performance even without any coating inside. Preliminary results of this type of RPCs are also being presented.

Formation of complex Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of water soluble rosebengal

This communication reports the formation of complex Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface by charge transfer types of interaction with the water soluble N- cetyl N, N, N trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules doped with rosebengal (RB), with the stearic acid (SA) molecules of a preformed SA Langmuir monolayer. The reaction kinetics of the formation of RB-CTAB-SA complex monolayer was monitored by observing the increase in surface pressure with time while the barrier was kept fixed. Completion of interaction kinetics was confirmed by FTIR study. This complex Langmuir films at the air-water interface was transferred onto solid substrates at a desired surface pressure to form multilayered Langmuir-Blodgett films. Spectroscopic characterizations reveal some molecular level interactions as well as formation of microcrystalline aggregates depending upon the molar ratios of CTAB and RB within the complex LB films. Presence of two types of species in the complex LB films was confirmed by fluorescence spectroscopy.

Formation of complex films with water-soluble CTAB molecules

This communication reports the formation of complex Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface with the water-soluble -trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) molecules when interacted with the stearic acid (SA) molecules. The reaction kinetics of the formation of the CTAB-SA complex was monitored by observing the surface pressure versus time graph. Multilayered LB films of this complex doped with congo red was successfully formed onto a quartz substrate. UV-Vis absorption and steady state fluorescence spectroscopic characteristics of this doped LB films confirms the successful incorporation of congo red molecules in to the CTAB-SA complex films.

Spectroscopic characterizations of the mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of 2,2'-biquinoline molecules: evidence of dimer formation

This communication reports the -A isotherms and spectroscopic characterizations of mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of nonamphiphilic 2, -biquinoline (BQ) molecules, mixed with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and stearic acid (SA). The pi-A isotherms and molefraction versus area per molecule studies indicate complete immiscibility of sample (BQ) and matrix (PMMA or SA) molecules. This immiscibility may lead to the formation of microcrystalline aggregates of BQ molecules in the mixed LB films. The scanning electron micrograph gives the visual evidence of microcrystalline aggregates of BQ molecules in the mixed LB films. UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and excitation spectroscopic studies reveal the nature of these microcrystalline aggregates. LB films lifted at higher surface pressure indicate the formation of dimer or higher order n-mers.

The CWKB particle production and classical condensate in de Sitter spacetime

The complex time WKB approximation is an effective tool in studying particle production in curved spacetime. We use it in this work to understand the formation of classical condensate in expanding de Sitter spacetime. The CWKB leads to the emergence of thermal spectrum that depends crucially on horizons (as in de Sitter spacetime) or observer dependent horizons (as in Rindler spacetime). A connection is sought between the horizon and the formation of classical condensate. We concentrate on de Sitter spacetime and study the cosmological perturbation of $k=0$ mode with various values of $m/H_0$. We find that for a minimally coupled free scalar field for $m^2/H_0^2<2$, the one-mode occupation number grows more than unity soon after the physical wavelength of the mode crosses the Hubble radius and soon after diverges as $N(t)\sim O(1)[λ_{phys}(t)/{H_0^{-1}}]^{2\sqrt{ν^2-1/4}}$, where $ν\equiv (9/4 -m^2/{H_0^2})^{1/2}$. The results substantiates the previous works in this direction. We also find the correct oscillation and behaviour of $N(z)$ at small $z$ from a single expression using CWKB approximation for various values of $m/H_0$. We also discuss decoherence in relation to the formation of classical condensate. We also find that the squeezed state formalism and CWKB method give identical results.

Generalised definitions of certain functions and their uses

Generalised definitions of exponential, trigonometric sine and cosine and hyperbolic sine and cosine functions are given. In the lowest order, these functions correspond to ordinary exponential, trigonometric sine etc. Some of the properties of the generalised functions are discussed. Importance of these functions and their possible applications are also considered.

The CWKB approach to non-reflecting potential and cosmological implications

We discuss the method of calculating the reflection coefficient using complex trajectory WKB (CWKB) approximation. This enables us to give an interpretation of non-reflecting nature of the potential under certain conditions and clarify some points, reported incorrectly elsewhere [vs:ejp] for the potential $U(x)=-U_0cosh^2(x/a)$. We show that the repeated reflectios between the turning points are essential, which most authors overlooked, in obtaining the non-reflecting c ondition. We find that the considered repeated reflection paths are in conformity with Bogolubov transformation technique. We discuss the implications of the results when applied to the particle production scenario, considering $x$ as a time variable and also stress the cosmological implications of the result with reference to radiation domonated and de Sitter spacetime.

The CWKB Method of Particle Production Near Chronology Horizon

In this paper we investigate the phenomenon of particle production of massles scalar field, in a model of spacetime where the chronology horizon could be formrd, using the method of complex time WKB approximation (CWKB). For the purpose, we take two examples in a model of spacetime, one already discussed by Sushkov, to show that the mode of particle production near chronology horizon possesses the similar characteristic features as are found while discussing particle production in time dependent curved background. We get identical results as that obtained by Sushkov in this direction. We find, in both the examples studied, that the total number of particles remain finite at the moment of the formation of the chronology horizon.

The CWKB Method of Particle Production in Periodic Potential

In this work we study the particle production in time dependent periodic potential using the method of complex time WKB (CWKB) approximation. In the inflationary cosmology at the end of inflationary stage, the potential becomes time dependent as well as periodic. Reheating occurs due to particle production by the oscillating inflaton field. Using CWKB we obtain almost identical results on catastrophic particle production as obtained by others.

Evolution of Dynamical Coupling in Scalar Tensor Theory from Noether Symmetry

We present the gravitational coupling function $ω(ϕ)$ in the vacuum scalar-tensor theory as allowed by the Noether symmetry. We also obtain some exact cosmological solutions in the spatially homogeneous and isotropic background thereby showing that the attractor mechanism is not effective enough to reduce the theory to Einstein theory. It is observed that, asymptotically, the scalar tensor theory goes over to Einstein theory with finite value of $ω$. This work thus supports earlier works in this direction.
