{Rearrangement of the antiferromagnetic ordering at high magnetic fields in SmFeAsO and SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals

The low-temperature antiferromagnetic state of the Sm-ions in both nonsuperconducting SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals was studied by magnetic torque, magnetization, and magnetoresistance measurements in magnetic fields up to 60~T and temperatures down to 0.6~K. We uncover in both compounds a distinct rearrangement of the antiferromagnetically ordered Sm-moments near $35-40$~T. This is seen in both, static and pulsed magnetic fields, as a sharp change in the sign of the magnetic torque, which is sensitive to the magnetic anisotropy and hence to the magnetic moment in the $ab$-plane, ({\it i.e.} the FeAs-layers), and as a jump in the magnetization for magnetic fields perpendicular to the conducting planes. This rearrangement of magnetic ordering in $35-40$~T is essentially temperature independent and points towards a canted or a partially polarized magnetic state in high magnetic fields. However, the observed value for the saturation moment above this rearrangement, suggests that the complete suppression of the antiferromagnetism related to the Sm-moments would require fields in excess of 60~T. Such a large field value is particularly remarkable when compared to the relatively small Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}\simeq5$~K, suggesting very anisotropic magnetic exchange couplings. At the transition, magnetoresistivity measurements show a crossover from positive to negative field-dependence, indicating that the charge carriers in the FeAs planes are sensitive to the magnetic configuration of the rare-earth elements. This is indicates a finite magnetic/electronic coupling between the SmO and the FeAs layers which are likely to mediate the exchange interactions leading to the long range antiferromagnetic order of the Sm ions.

Anisotropic Phase Diagram and Superconducting Fluctuations in SmFeAsO0.85F0.15

We report on the specific heat determination of the anisotropic phase diagram of single crystals of optimally doped SmFeAsO1-xFx. In zero-field, the optimally doped compound displays a clear cusp-like anomaly in C/T with ΔC/Tc = 24 mJ/molK2 at Tc = 49.5 K. In magnetic fields applied along the c-axis, we find pronounced superconducting fluctuations induced broadening and suppression of the specific heat anomaly which can be described using three-dimensional lowest-Landau-level scaling with an upper critical field slope of -3.5 T/K and an anisotropy of Γ = 8. The small value of ΔC/Tc yields a Sommerfeld coefficient γ ~ 8 mJ/molK2 indicating that SmFeAsO1-xFx is characterized by a modest density of states and strong coupling.

Diamagnetism, Nernst signal, and finite size effects in superconductors above the transition temperature

Various superconductors, including cuprate superconductors, exhibit peculiar features above the transition temperature T_c. In particular the observation of a large diamagnetism and Nernst signal in a wide temperature window above T_c attracted considerable attention. Noting that this temperature window exceeds the fluctuation dominated regime drastically and that in these materials the spatial extent of homogeneity is limited, we explore the relevance of the zero dimensional (0D)-model, neglecting thermal fluctuations. It is shown that both, the full 0D-model as well as its Gaussian approximation, mimic the essential features of the isothermal magnetization curves in Pb nanoparticles and various cuprates remarkably well. This analysis also provides estimates for the spatial extent of the homogeneous domains giving rise to a smeared transition in zero magnetic field. The resulting estimates for the amplitude of the in-plane correlation length exhibit a doping dependence reflecting the flow to the quantum phase transition in the underdoped limit. Furthermore it is shown that the isothermal Nernst signal of a superconducting Nb_(0.15)Si_(0.85) film is fully consistent with this scenario. Accordingly, the observed diamagnetism above T_c in Pb nanoparticles, in the cuprates La_(1.91)Sr_(0.09)CuO_4 and BiSr_2Ca_2CuO_(8-d), as well as the Nernst signal in Nb_(0.15)Si_(0.85) films, are all in excellent agreement with the scaling properties emerging from the 0D-model, giving a universal perspective on the interplay between diamagnetism, Nernst signal, correlation length, and the limited spatial extent of homogeneity. Our analysis also provides evidence that singlet Cooper pairs subjected to orbital pair breaking in a 0D system are the main source of the observed diamagnetism and Nernst signal in an extended temperature window above T_c.

Field Dependent Superfluid Density in the Optimally Doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y Superconductor

The magnetic field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth for optimally doped SmFeAsO_(1-x)F_y was investigated by combining torque magnetometry, SQUID magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. The results obtained from these techniques show all a pronounced decrease of the superfluid density as the field is increased up to 1.4 T. This behavior is analysed within a two-band model with self-consistently derived coupled gaps, where the superfluid density related to the larger gap is field independent and the superfluid density related to the smaller gap is strongly suppressed with increasing field.

Fermi-surface of underdoped LaFeAsO1-xFx as determined by the Haas-van Alphen-effect

Here, we present a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect1 study on the newly discovered LaFeAsO1-xFx compounds2,3 in order to unveil the topography of the Fermi surface associated with their antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases, which is essential for understanding their magnetism, pairing symmetry and superconducting mechanism. Calculations 4 and surface-sensitive measurements 5,6,7 provided early guidance, but lead to contradictory results, generating a need for a direct experimental probe of their bulk Fermi surface. In antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO1-xFx 8,9 we observe a complex pattern in the Fourier spectrum of the oscillatory component superimposed onto the magnetic torque signal revealing a reconstructed Fermi surface, whose geometry is not fully described by band structure calculations. Surprisingly, several of the same frequencies, or Fermi surface cross-sectional areas, are also observed in superconducting LaFeAsO1-xFx (with a superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 15 K). Although one could attribute this to inhomogeneous F doping, the corresponding effective masses are largely enhanced with respect to those of the antiferromagnetic compound. Instead, this implies the microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism on the same Fermi surface in the underdoped region of the phase diagram of the LaFeAsO1-xFx series. Thus, the dHvA-effect reveals a more complex Fermi surface topography than that predicted by band structure calculations4 upon which the currently proposed superconducting pairing scenarios10,11,12,13 are based, which could be at the origin of their higher Tcs when compared to their phosphide analogs.

Th substituted SmFeAsO: structural details and superconductivity with Tc above 50 K

Superconducting poly- and single-crystalline samples of Sm1-xThxFeAsO with partial substitution of Sm3+ by Th4+ were synthesized and grown under high pressure and their structural, magnetic and transport properties are studied. The superconducting Tc reaches values higher than 50 K. Bulk superconducting samples (x = 0.08, 0.15, 0.3) do not show any signs of a phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal structure at low temperatures. With Th substitution the unit cell parameters a and c shrink and the fractional atomic coordinate of the As site zAs remains almost unchanged, while that of Sm/Th zSm/Th increases. Upon warming from 5 K to 295 K the expansion of the FeAs layer thickness is dominant, while the changes in the other structural building blocks are smaller by a factor of 1/5, and they compensate each other, since the As-Sm/Th distance appears to contract by about the same amount as the O-Sm/Th expands. The poly- and single-crystalline samples are characterized by a full diamagnetic response in low magnetic field, by a high intergrain critical-current density for polycrystalline samples, and by a critical current density of the order of 8 x 105 A/cm2 for single crystals at 2 K in fields up to 7 T. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy γλ increases with decreasing temperature, a similar behavior to that of SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals. The upper critical field estimated from resistance measurements is anisotropic with slopes of 5.4 T/K (H//ab plane) and 2.7 T/K (H//c axis), at temperatures sufficiently far below Tc. The upper critical field anisotropy γH is in the range of 2, consistent with the tendency of a decreasing γH with decreasing temperature, already reported for SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of single-crystalline FeSe0.5Te0.5

Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth λat zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density ρ_s(0) λ^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both λ_ab and λ_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of Δ_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and Δ_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter γ_λ(T)=λ_c(T)/λ_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with γ_λ(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors.

Quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in spin-density-wave and superconducting SmFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} single crystals

We investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in undoped SmFeAsO and near-optimally doped SmFeAsO_{0.8}F_{0.2} single crystals - exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and superconductivity respectively - using pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy. In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparticle recombination dynamics exhibiting a BCS-like T-dependent superconducting gap, and a pseudogap (PG)-like feature with an onset above 180K indicating the existence of a pseudogap of magnitude 2Δ_{\mathrm{PG}}\simeq120 meV above T_{\mathrm{c}}. From the pump-photon energy dependence we conclude that the SC state and PG relaxation channels are independent, implying the presence of two separate electronic subsystems. We discuss the data in terms of spatial inhomogeneity and multi-band scenarios, finding that the latter is more consistent with the present data.

Bulk Superconductivity at 2.6 K in Undoped RbFe_2As_2

The iron arsenide RbFe_2As_2 with the ThCr_2Si_2-type structure is found to be a bulk superconductor with T_c=2.6 K. The onset of diamagnetism was used to estimate the upper critical field H_c2(T), resulting in dH_c2/dT=-1.4 T/K and an extrapolated H_c2(0)=2.5 T. As a new representative of iron pnictide superconductors, superconducting RbFe_2As_2 contrasts with BaFe_2As_2, where the Fermi level is higher and a magnetic instability is observed. Thus, the solid solution series (Rb,Ba)Fe_2As_2 is a promising system to study the crossover from superconductivity to magnetism.

Evidence for Kosterlitz-Thouless and 3D-xy critical behavior in Bi2212

We present reversible magnetization data of a high quality Bi2212 single crystal and explore the occurrence of 3D-xy critical behavior close to the bulk transition temperature Tc and of Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) behavior. Below and above the presumed Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature T_KT we observe the characteristic 2D-xy behavior: a downward shift of the crossing point phenomenon towards T_KT as the field is decreased and sufficiently below T_KT the characteristic 2D-xy relationship between the magnetization an the in-plane magnetic penetration depth. In contrast, the measured temperature dependence of the superfluid density does not exhibit the characteristic KT-behavior around the presumed T_KT. The absence of this feature is traced back to the 2D- to 3D-xy crossover setting in around and above T_KT. Invoking the Maxwell relation the anomalous field dependence of the specific heat peak is also traced back to the intermediate 2D-xy behavior. However, close to Tc we observe consistency with 3D-xy critical behavior, in agreement with measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth.

Superconductivity at 23 K and Low Anisotropy in Rb-Substituted BaFe_2As_2 Single Crystals

Single crystals of Ba_{1-x}Rb_{x}Fe_2As_2 with x=0.05-0.1 have been grown from Sn flux and are bulk superconductors with T_c up to 23 K. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, and Sn is found to be incorporated for 9% Ba, shifted by 1.1 Angstroem away from the Ba site towards the (Fe_2As_2)-layers. The upper critical field deduced from resistance measurements is anisotropic with slopes of 7.1(3) T/K (H || ab-plane) and 4.2(2) T/K (H || c-axis), sufficiently far below T_c. The extracted upper critical field anisotropy of 3 close to T_c, is in good agreement with the estimate from magnetic torque measurements. This indicates that the electronic properties in the doped BaFe_2As_2 compound are significantly more isotropic than those in the LnFeAsO family. The in-plane critical current density at 5 K exceeds 10^6 A/cm^2, making Ba_{1-x}Rb_xFe_2As_2 a promising candidate for technical applications.

Evidence for two distinct anisotropies in the oxypnictide superconductors SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) and NdFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2)

Single crystals of the oxypnictide superconductors SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) and NdFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) with T_c in the range of 44 K to 48 K were investigated by torque magnetometry. An analysis of the data in terms of a recently proposed model for the anisotropic magnetization in the superconducting state, treating the penetration depth anisotropy differently than the upper critical field anisotropy, provides evidence that in the oxypnictide superconductors two distinct anisotropies are present. As a result the penetration depth anisotropy differs significantly in magnitude and in temperature dependence from the upper critical field anisotropy, analogous to MgB_2 but with a reversed sign of slope. This scenario strongly suggests a new multi-band mechanism in the novel class of oxypnictide high-temperature superconductors.

Single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2: growth, structure and superconducting properties

A review of our investigations on single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 is presented. A high pressure technique has been applied for the growth of LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals, while Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals were grown using quartz ampoule method. Single crystals were used for electrical transport, structure, magnetic torque and spectroscopic studies. Investigations of the crystal structure confirmed high structural perfection and show less than full occupation of the (O, F) position in superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals. Resistivity measurements on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals show a significant broadening of the transition in high magnetic fields, whereas the resistive transition in Ba1 xRbxFe2As2 simply shifts to lower temperature. Critical current density for both compounds is relatively high and exceeds 2x109 A/m2 at 15 K in 7 T. The anisotropy of magnetic penetration depth, measured on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals by torque magnetometry is temperature dependent and apparently larger than the anisotropy of the upper critical field. Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals are electronically significantly less anisotropic. Point-Contact Andreev-Reflection spectroscopy indicates the existence of two energy gaps in LnFeAsO1-xFx. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy reveals in addition to a superconducting gap, also some feature at high energy (~20 meV).

Probing superconductivity in MgB2 confined to magnetic field tuned cylinders by means of critical fluctuations

We report and analyze reversible magnetization measurements on a high quality MgB2 single crystal in the vicinity of the zero field transition temperature, T_c=38.83 K, at several magnetic fields up to 300 Oe, applied along the c-axis. Though MgB2 is a two gap superconductor our scaling analysis uncovers remarkable consistency with 3D-xy critical behavior, revealing that close to criticality the order parameter is a single complex scalar as in 4He. This opens up the window onto the exploration of the magnetic field induced finite size effect, whereupon the correlation length transverse to the applied magnetic field H_i applied along the i-axis cannot grow beyond the limiting magnetic length L_Hi, related to the average distance between vortex lines. We find unambiguous evidence for this finite size effect. It implies that in type II superconductors, such as MgB2, there is the 3D to 1D crossover line H_pi and xi denotes the critical amplitudes of the correlation lengths above and below T_c along the respective axis. Consequently, above H_pi(T) and T<T_c superconductivity is confined to cylinders with diameter L_Hi (1D). In contrast, above T_c the uncondensed pairs are confined to cylinders. Accordingly, there is no continuous phase transition in the (H,T)-plane along the H_c2-lines as predicted by the mean-field treatment.

Anisotropy of superconducting single crystal SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) studied by torque magnetometry

Single crystals of the oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAsO_(0.8)F_(0.2) with T_c=45(1) K were investigated by torque magnetometry. The crystals of mass~0.1 mug were grown by a high-pressure cubic anvil technique. The use of a high-sensitive piezoresistive torque sensor made it possible to study the anisotropic magnetic properties of these tiny crystals. The anisotropy parameter was found to be field independent, but varies strongly with temperature ranging from 8 at T=T_c to 23 at T=0.4T_c. This unusual behavior signals unconventional superconductivity.

3D-xy critical properties of YBa2Cu4O8 and magnetic field induced 3D to 1D crossover

We present reversible magnetization data of a YBa2Cu4O8 single crystal and analyze the evidence for 3D-xy critical behavior and a magnetic field induced 3D to 1D crossover. Remarkable consistency with these phenomena is observed in agreement with a magnetic field induced finite size effect, whereupon the correlation length transverse to the applied magnetic field cannot grow beyond the limiting magnetic length scale L_H. By applying the appropriate scaling form we obtain the zero-field critical temperature, the 3D to 1D crossover, the vortex melting line and the universal ratios of the related scaling variables. Accordingly there is no continuous phase transition in the (H,T)-plane along the H_c2-lines as predicted by the mean-field treatment.

Nodeless superconductivity in the infinite-layer electron-doped Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO_2 cuprate superconductor

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth λ_{ab} in the infinite-layer electron-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductor Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO_2 by means of muon-spin rotation. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependences of λ_{ab} are consistent with the presence of a substantial s-wave component in the superconducting order parameter in good agreement with the results of tunneling, specific heat, and small-angle neutron scattering experiments.
