Search for n-nbar oscillation in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or $2.45 \times 10^{34}$ neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation was found, the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in ${}^{16}$O, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be $1.9 \times 10^{32}$~years at the 90\% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be $2.7 \times 10^8$~s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of $0.517 \times 10^{23}$~s$^{-1}$ and its uncertainty.

DNC/HNC and N2D+/N2H+ ratios in high-mass star forming cores

Chemical models predict that the deuterated fraction (the column density ratio between a molecule containing D and its counterpart containing H) of N2H+, Dfrac(N2H+), is high in massive pre-protostellar cores and rapidly drops of an order of magnitude after the protostar birth, while that of HNC, Dfrac(HNC), remains constant for much longer. We tested these predictions by deriving Dfrac(HNC) in 22 high-mass star forming cores divided in three different evolutionary stages, from high-mass starless core candidates (HMSCs, 8) to high-mass protostellar objects (HMPOs, 7) to Ultracompact HII regions (UCHIIs, 7). For all of them, Dfrac (N2H+) was already determined through IRAM-30m Telescope observations, which confirmed the theoretical rapid decrease of Dfrac(N2H+) after protostar birth (Fontani et al. 2011). Therefore our comparative study is not affected by biases introduced by the source selection. We have found average Dfrac(HNC) of 0.012, 0.009 and 0.008 in HMSCs, HMPOs and UCHIIs, respectively, with no statistically significant differences among the three evolutionary groups. These findings confirm the predictions of the chemical models, and indicate that large values of Dfrac(N2H+) are more suitable than large values of Dfrac(HNC) to identify cores on the verge of forming high-mass stars, likewise what found in the low-mass regime.

Orbital magnetic moment and coercivity of SiO$_{2}$-coated FePt nanoparticles studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $L$1$_{0}$-ordered phase coated with SiO$_{2}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe $L_{\rm 2,3}$ absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment ($M_{\rm orb}$) to the spin magnetic moment ($M_{\rm spin}$) of Fe to be $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ = 0.08. This $M_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin}$ value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensation, and is larger than the values ($\sim$0.05) obtained for FePt thin films, indicating a high degree of $L$1$_{0}$ order. The hysteretic behavior of the FePt component of the magnetization was measured by XMCD. The magnetic coercivity ($H_{\rm c}$) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, $\sim$3 times larger than the thin film value and $\sim$50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for non-interacting single-domain nanoparticles with the $H_{\rm c}$ distributed from 1 T to 5 T.

The MEG detector for $μ+\to e+γ$ decay search

The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\ by using one of the most intense continuous $μ^+$ beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.

CH radio emission from heiles cloud 2 as a tracer of molecular cloud evolution

A mapping observation of the $J=1/2$ $Λ$-type doubling transition (3.3 GHz) of CH has been conducted toward Heiles Cloud 2 (HCL2) in the Taurus molecular cloud complex to reveal its molecular cloud-scale distribution. The observations were carried out with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope. The CH emission is found to be extended over the whole region of HCL2. It is brighter in the southeastern part, which encloses the TMC-1 cyanopolyyne peak than in the northwestern part. Its distribution extends continuously from the peak of the neutral carbon emission (CI peak) to the TMC-1 ridge, as if it were connecting the distributions of the [C I] and C$^{18}$O emissions. Since CH is an intermediate in gas-phase chemical reactions from C to CO, its emission should trace the transition region. The above distribution of the CH emission is consistent with this chemical behavior. Since the CH abundance is subject to the chemical evolutionary effect, the CH column density in HCL2 no longer follows a linear correlation wit the H$_2$ column density reported for diffuse and translucent clouds. More importantly, the CH line profile is found to be composed of the narrow and broad components. Although the broad component is dominant around the CI peak, the narrow component appears in the TMC-1 ridge and dense core regions such as L1527 and TMC-1A. This trend seems to reflect a narrowing of the line width during the formation of dense cores. These results suggest that the 3.3 GHz CH line is a useful tool for tracing the chemical and physical evolution of molecular clouds.

An order-N electronic structure theory with generalized eigenvalue equations and its application to a ten-million-atom system

A linear-algebraic theory called 'multiple Arnoldi method' is presented and realizes large-scale (order-N) electronic structure calculation with generalized eigen-value equations. A set of linear equations, in the form of (zS-H) x = b, are solved simultaneously with multiple Krylov subspaces. The method is implemented in a simulation package ELSES (http://www.elses.jp) with tight-binding-form Hamiltonians. A finite-temperature molecular dynamics simulation is carried out for metallic and insulating materials. A calculation with $10^7$ atoms was realized by a workstation. The parallel efficiency is shown upto 1,024 CPU cores.

Linear Algebra and Charge Self-consistent Tight-binding Method for Large-scale Electronic Structure Calculations

We review our recently developed electronic structure calculation methods used for the dynamics of large-scale solids or liquids with an efficient algorithm for large scale simultaneous linear equations. The electronic structure calculation method is the `atomic superposition and electron delocalization molecular orbitals theory' (ASED), using the Mulliken charge density. Very crucial algorithm is the generalized shifted COCG (conjugate orthogonal conjugate gradient) method based on the Krylov subspace extended to non-orthogonal basis set. The most important techniques for applications are the shifted equation and the seed switching method, which make the computational cost be reduced much. We, then, present some applications to electronic structure calculations with MD simulation. The applications are given to the fracture propagation in nano-scale Si crystals and the proton transfer in water.

Efficient and Accurate Linear Algebraic Methods for Large-scale Electronic Structure Calculations with Non-orthogonal Atomic Orbitals

The need for large-scale electronic structure calculations arises recently in the field of material physics and efficient and accurate algebraic methods for large simultaneous linear equations become greatly important. We investigate the generalized shifted conjugate orthogonal conjugate gradient method, the generalized Lanczos method and the generalized Arnoldi method. They are the solver methods of large simultaneous linear equations of one-electron Schrödinger equation and maps the whole Hilbert space to a small subspace called the Krylov subspace. These methods are applied to systems of fcc Au with the NRL tight-binding Hamiltonian (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 63}, 195101 (2001)). We compare results by these methods and the exact calculation and show them equally accurate. The system size dependence of the CPU time is also discussed. The generalized Lanczos method and the generalized Arnoldi method are the most suitable for the large-scale molecular dynamics simulations from the view point of CPU time and memory size.

Fabrication and characterization of pseudo-spin-MOSFET

Recently spin-transistors receive considerable attention as a highly-functional building block of future integrated circuits. In order to realize spin-transistors, it is essential that technology of efficient spin injection/detection for semiconductor channel is established. However, this is not so easy challenge owing to ferromagnet/semiconductor-interface-related several problems. In this paper, we demonstrate pseudo-spin-MOSFET (PS-MOSFET) architecture that is a new circuit approach using an ordinary MOSFET and magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) to reproduce the functions of spin transistors.

GW approximation with LSDA+U method and applications to NiO, MnO, and V$_2$O$_3$

A GW approximation (GWA) method named U+GWA is proposed, where we can start GWA with more localized wave functions obtained by the local spin-density approximation (LSDA)+U method. Then GWA and U+GWA are applied to MnO, NiO, and V$_2$O$_3$ in antiferromagnetic phase. The band gaps and energy spectra show an excellent agreement with the experimentally observed results and are discussed in details. The calculated width of d-bands of V$_2$O$_3$ is much narrower than that of the observed one which may be a mixture of t$_{2g}^2$ multiplet and single electron t$_{2g}$ level. GWA or U+GWA does not work also in the paramagnetic phase of V$_2$O$_3$ and the reason for thois is clarified. The method of the unique choice of on-site Coulomb interaction is discussed in details. The criterion for whether we should adopt GWA or U+GWA is discussed and is assessed with the help of the off-diagonal elements of the self-energy.

Charge and spin stripe in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4}$ (x=1/3,1/2)

Electronic structure of stripe ordered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4}$ is investigated. The system with x=1/3 is insulator, in LSDA+U calculations, and shows charge and spin stripe, consistent with the experimental results. Highly correlated system of x=1/2 is studied by using exact diagonalization of multi-orbital many body Hamiltonian derived from LDA calculations and including on-site and inter-site Coulomb interactions. The fluctuation of the residual spin on Ni$^{3+}$ (hole) site couples with the charge fluctuation between Ni$^{3+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ states and this correlation lowers the total energy. The resultant ground state is insulator with charge and spin stripe of the energy gap 0.9eV, consistent with observed one. The on-site Coulomb interaction stabilizes integral valency of each Ni ion (Ni$^{3+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$), but does not induce the charge order. Two quantities, inter-site Coulomb interaction and anisotropy of hopping integrals, play an important role to form the charge and spin stripe order in a system of x=1/2.

Effects of annealing time on structural and magnetic properties of L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreactor method

We investigated effects of annealing time on structural and magnetic properties of the L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreacter method. The magnetization and powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the annealing at 900 oC for 9 hr could convert all of the fcc-nanoparticles to the well-crystallized L10 structure with a large coercivity while keeping their particle size. Such monodisperse and highly crystalline L10-FePt nanoparticles are a promising material for the realization of ultra-high density recording.

Improved search for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillation in a long-baseline accelerator experiment

We performed an improved search for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of $9.2 \times 10^{19}$\xspace protons on target. No evidence for a $ν_e$ appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillation parameters. At $Δm^2$ = $2.8 \times 10^{-3} \mathrm{eV}^2$, the best fit value of the K2K $ν_μ$ disappearance analysis, we set an upper limit of $\sin^2 2θ_{μe}$ $<$ 0.13 at 90% confidence level.

Direct Observation of Site-specific Valence Electronic Structure at Interface: SiO2/Si Interface

Atom specific valence electronic structures at interface are elucidated successfully using soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. In order to demonstrate the versatility of this method, we investigated SiO2/Si interface as a prototype and directly observed valence electronic states projected at the particular atoms of the SiO2/Si interface; local electronic structure strongly depends on the chemical states of each atom. In addition we compared the experimental results with first-principle calculations, which quantitatively revealed the interfacial properties in atomic-scale.

A novel type of proximity focusing RICH counter with multiple refractive index aerogel radiator

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector, with the radiator consisting of two or more aerogel layers of different refractive indices, has been tested in 1-4 GeV/c pion beams at KEK. Essentially, a multiple refractive index aerogel radiator allows for an increase in Cherenkov photon yield on account of the increase in overall radiator thickness, while avoiding the simultaneous degradation in single photon angular resolution associated with the increased uncertainty of the emission point. With the refractive index of consecutive layers suitably increasing in the downstream direction, one may achieve overlapping of the Cherenkov rings from a single charged particle. In the opposite case of decreasing refractive index, one may obtain well separated rings. In the former combination an approximately 40% increase in photon yield is accompanied with just a minor degradation in single photon angular resolution. The impact of this improvement on the pion/kaon separation at the upgraded Belle detector is discussed.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

Mapping Observations of DNC and HN^13C in Dark Cloud Cores

We present results of mapping observations of the DNC, HN^13C, and H^13CO^+ lines (J=1-0) toward 4 nearby dark cloud cores, TMC-1, L1512, L1544, and L63, along with observations of the DNC and HN^13C lines (J=2-1) toward selected positions. By use of statistical equilibrium calculations based on the LVG model, the H_2 densities are derived to be (1.4-5.5)*10^5 cm^-3, and the [DNC]/[HN^13C] ratios are derived to be 1.25-5.44 with a typical uncertainty by a factor of 2. The observed [DNC]/[HNC] ratios range from 0.02 to 0.09, assuming the [^12C]/[^13C] ratio of 60. Distributions of DNC and HN^13C are generally similar to each other, whereas the distribution of H^13CO^+ is more extended than those of DNC and HN^13C, indicating that they reside in an inner part of the cores than HCO^+. The [DNC]/[HN^13C] ratio is rather constant within each core, although a small systematic gradients are observed in TMC-1 and L63. Particularly, no such systematic gradient is found in L1512 and L1544, where a significant effect of depletion of molecules is reported toward the central part of the cores. This suggests that the [DNC]/[HNC] ratio would not be very sensitive to depletion factor, unlike the [DCO^+]/[HCO^+] ratio. On the other hand, the core to core variation of the [DNC]/[HNC] ratio, which range an order of magnitude, is more remarkable than the variation within each core. These results are interpreted qualitatively by a combination of three competing time-dependent processes; gas-phase deuterium fractionation, depletion of molecules onto grain surface, and dynamical evolution of a core.

L1521E: A Starless Core in the Early Evolutionary Stage ?

We have studied the physical and chemical properties of a quiescent starless core L1521E with various molecular lines. It is found that there exists a compact dense core traced by the H^13CO^+, HN^13C, CCS, and HC_3N lines; their distributions have a single peak at the same position. The core radius is as small as 0.031 pc, whereas the H_2 density at the peak position is as high as (1.3-5.6)times10^5 cm^-3. Although the density is high enough to excite the inversion transitions of NH_3, these lines are found to be very faint in L1521E. The distributions of NH_3 and CCS seem to be different from those of well-studied starless cores, L1498 and L1544, where the distribution of CCS shows a shell-like structure while that of NH_3 is concentrated at the center of the core. Abundances of carbon-chain molecules are higher in L1521E than the other dark cloud cores, and especially those of sulfur-bearing molecules C_nS are comparable to the cyanopolyyne peak of TMC-1. Our results suggest that L1521E would be in a very early stage of physical and chemical evolution.
