The mass of heavy-light mesons in a constituent quark picture with partially restored chiral symmetry

We probe effects of the partial chiral symmetry restoration to the mass of heavy-light mesons in a constituent quark model by changing the constituent quark mass of the light quark. Due to the competing effect between the quark mass and the linearly rising potential, whose contribution to the energy increases as the quark mass decreases, the heavy-light meson mass has a minimum value near the constituent quark mass typically used in the vacuum. Hence, the meson mass increases as one decreases the constituent quark mass consistent with recent QCD sum rule analyses, which show an increasing $D$ meson mass as the chiral order parameter decreases.

Freeze-out conditions for production of resonances, hadronic molecules, and light nuclei

We investigate the freeze-out conditions of a particle in an expanding system of interacting particles in order to understand the productions of resonances, hadronic molecules and light nuclei in heavy ion collisions. Applying the kinetic freeze-out condition with explicit hydrodynamic calculations for the expanding hadronic phase to the daughter particles of $K^*$ mesons, we find that the larger suppression of the yield ratio of $K^*/K$ at LHC than at RHIC compared to the expectations from the statistical hadronization model based on chemical freeze-out parameters reflects the lower kinetic freeze-out temperature at LHC than at RHIC. Furthermore, we point out that for the light nuclei or hadronic molecules that are bound, the yields are affected by the freeze-out condition of the respective particle in the hadronic matter, which leads to the observation that the deuteron production yields are independent of the size of deuteron, and depend only on the number of ground state constituents.

Temperature dependence of dimension 6 gluon operators and their effects on Charmonium

Starting from an earlier representation of the independent dimension 6 gluon operators in terms of color electric and magnetic fields, we estimate their changes near the critical temperature $T_c$ using the temperature dependence of the dimension 4 electric and magnetic condensates extracted from pure gauge theory on the lattice. We then improve the previous QCD sum rules for the $J/ψ$ mass near $T_c$ based on dimension 4 operators, by including the contribution of the dimension 6 operators to the OPE. We find an enhanced stability in the sum rule and confirm that the $J/ψ$ will undergo an abrupt change in the property across $T_c$.

Symmetry energy in cold dense matter

We calculate the symmetry energy in cold dense matter both in the normal quark phase and in the 2-color superconductor (2SC) phase. For the normal phase, the thermodynamic potential is calculated by using hard dense loop (HDL) resummation to leading order, where the dominant contribution comes from the longitudinal gluon rest mass. The effect of gluonic interaction to the symmetry energy, obtained from the thermodynamic potential, was found to be small. In the 2SC phase, the non-perturbative BCS paring gives enhanced symmetry energy as the gapped states are forced to be in the common Fermi sea reducing the number of available quarks that can contribute to the asymmetry. We used high density effective field theory to estimate the contribution of gluon interaction to the symmetry energy. Among the gluon rest masses in 2SC phase, only the Meissner mass has iso-spin dependence although the magnitude is much smaller than the Debye mass. As the iso-spin dependence of gluon rest masses is even smaller than the case in the normal phase, we expect that the contribution of gluonic interaction to the symmetry energy in the 2SC phase will be minimal. The different value of symmetry energy in each phase will lead to different prediction for the particle yields in heavy ion collision experiment.

Reduction of the $K^*$ meson abundance in heavy ion collisions

We study the $K^*$ meson reduction in heavy ion collisions by focusing on the hadronic effects on the $K^*$ meson abundance. We evaluate the absorption cross sections of the $K^*$ and $K$ meson by light mesons in the hadronic matter, and further investigate the variation in the meson abundances for both particles during the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions. We show how the interplay between the interaction of the $K^*$ meson and kaon with light mesons in the hadronic medium determines the final yield difference of the statistical hadronization model to the experimental measurements. For the central Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, we find that the $K^*/K$ yield ratio at chemical freeze-out decreases by $36\%$ during the expansion of the hadronic matter, resulting in the final ratio comparable to STAR measurements of 0.23 $\pm0.05$.

New determination of $\mathcal{S} \mathcal{T} \langle N| \overline{q} D_μ D_ν q |N \rangle$ based on recent experimental constraints

The symmetric and traceless part of the matrix element $\mathcal{S} \mathcal{T} \langle N| \overline{q} D_μ D_ν q |N \rangle$ can be determined from the second moment of the twist-3 parton distribution function $e(x)$. Recently, novel experimental data on $e(x)$ have become available, which enables us to evaluate the magnitude of the above matrix element with considerably reduced systematic uncertainties. Based on the new experimental data, we show that $\mathcal{S} \mathcal{T} \langle N| \overline{q} D_μ D_ν q |N \rangle$ is likely to be at least an order of magnitude smaller than what previous model-based estimates have so far suggested. We discuss the consequences of this observation for the analysis of deep inelastic scattering and QCD sum rules studies at finite density for the vector meson and the nucleon, in which this matrix element is being used as an input parameter.

Dibaryons in a constituent quark model

We investigate the properties of dibaryons containing u and d quarks in the constituent quark model. In constructing the ground state wave function, we choose the spatial part to be fully symmetric and the remaining color, isospin and spin part to be antisymmetric so as to satisfy the the Pauli principle. By adapting the IS coupling scheme that combine the isospin basis function with the spin basis function, and subsequently coupling this to the color singlet basis function, we construct the color $\otimes$ isospin $\otimes$ spin states compatible with the physical states of the dibaryon. By using the variational method, we then calculate the mass of the dibaryon in a nonrelativistic potential model, involving Coulomb, color confinement and color-spin hyperfine interaction. In particular, to asses the stability for different types of the confinement potential, we introduce one that is linearly proportional to the interquark distance and another to its square root. For all cases considered, we find that there are no compact bound states against the strong decay.

Renormalization of dimension 6 gluon operators

We identify the independent dimension 6 twist 4 gluon operators and calculate their renormalization in the pure gauge theory. By constructing the renormalization group invariant combinations, we find the scale invariant condensates that can be estimated in nonperturbative calculations and used in QCD sum rules for heavy quark systems in medium.

Charmonium Spectroscopy in Strong Magnetic Fields by QCD Sum Rules: S-Wave Ground States

We investigate quarkonium mass spectra in external constant magnetic fields by using QCD sum rules. We first discuss a general framework of QCD sum rules necessary for properly extracting meson spectra from current correlators computed in the presence of strong magnetic fields, that is, a consistent treatment of mixing effects caused in the mesonic degrees of freedom. We then implement operator product expansions for pseudoscalar and vector heavy-quark current correlators by taking into account external constant magnetic fields as operators, and obtain mass shifts of the lowest-lying bound states $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ in the static limit with their vanishing spatial momenta. Comparing results from QCD sum rules with those from hadronic effective theories, we find that the dominant origin of mass shifts comes from a mixing between $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ with a longitudinal spin polarization, accompanied by other subdominant effects such as mixing with higher excited states and continua.

Quarkonium formation time in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the quarkonium formation time in relativistic heavy-ion collisions from the space-time correlator of heavy quark vector currents in a hydrodynamics background with the initial nonequilibrium stage expanding only in the longitudinal direction. Using in-medium quarkonia properties determined with the heavy quark potential taken to be the free energy from lattice calculations and the fact that quarkonia can only be formed below their dissociation temperatures due to color screening, we find that $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), $Υ$(3S), $J/ψ$ and $ψ^\prime$ are formed, respectively, at 1.2, 6.6, 8.8, 5.8, and 11.0 fm/c after the quark pair are produced in central Au+Au collisions at the top energy of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), and these times become shorter in semi-central collisions. We further show, as an example, that including the effect of formation time enhances appreciably the survivability of $Υ$(1S) in the produced hot dense matter.

QCD sum rules for magnetically induced mixing between $η_c$ and $J/ψ$

We investigate the properties of charmonia in strong magnetic fields by using QCD sum rules. We show how to implement the mixing effects between $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ on the basis of field-theoretical approaches, and then show that the sum rules are saturated by the mixing effects with phenomenologically determined parameters. Consequently, we find that the mixing effects are the dominant contribution to the mass shifts of the charmonia in strong magnetic fields.

Hadronic effects on the X(3872) meson abundance in heavy ion collisions

We study the hadronic effects on the X(3872) meson abundance in heavy ion collisions. We evaluate the absorption cross sections of the X(3872) meson by pions and rho mesons in the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions, and further investigate the variation in the X(3872) meson abundance during the expansion of the hadronic matter for its two possible quantum number states; $J^P=1^+$ and $2^-$. We show that the absorption cross sections and the time evolution of the X(3872) meson abundance are strongly dependent on the structure and quantum number of the X(3872) meson. We thus suggest that studying the abundance of the X(3872) meson in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides a chance to infer its quantum number as well as its structure.

Color spin wave functions of heavy tetraquark states

Using the variational method, we calculate the mass of the J^P=1^+ (ud)bar(bb) tetraquark containing two identical heavy antiquarks in a nonrelativistic potential model with color confinement and spin hyperfine interaction. In particular, we extend a previous investigation of the model by Brink and Stancu by investigating the effect of including the color anti-sextet component of the diquark configuration as well as using several more Gaussian parametrization for the L=0 part of the spatial wave function. We find that for the heavy tetraquark, the 6bar{6} component among the color singlet bases is negligible and that the previously used specific Gaussian spatial configuration is good enough in obtaining the ground state energy.

Free energy versus internal energy potential for heavy quark systems at finite temperature

Using the QCD sum rule with its operator product expansion reliably estimated from lattice calculations for the pressure and energy density of the quark-gluon plasma, we calculate the strength of the wave function of J/psi at the origin and find that it decreases with temperature above the transition temperature. This result is shown to follow exactly that obtained from the solution of the Schrödingier equation for a charm and anticharm quark pair using the free energy from lattice calculations as the potential and is in sharp contrast to that using the deeper potential associated with the internal energy, which shows an enhanced strength of the J/psi wave function at the origin. Our result thus has resolved the long-standing question of whether the free energy potential or the internal energy potential should be used in analyzing the spectrum of heavy quark systems at finite temperature.

Quarkonium formation time in quark-gluon plasma

The quarkonium formation time in a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is determined from the space-time correlator of heavy quark vector currents using the quarkonium in-medium mass and wave function obtained from heavy quark potentials extracted from the lattice QCD. It is found that the formation time of a quarkonium increases with the temperature of the QGP and diverges near its dissociation temperature. Also, the quarkonium formation time is longer if the heavy quark potential is taken to be the free energy from lattice calculations for a heavy quark pair, compared to that based on the more negative internal energy.

Chiral and U_A(1) symmetry in correlation functions in medium

In this review, we will discuss how the chiral symmetry and U_A(1) breaking effects are reflected in the correlation functions. Using the Banks-Casher formula, one can identify the density of zero eigenvalues to be the common ingredient that governs the chiral symmetry breaking in correlation functions between currents composed of light quarks with or without a heavy quark. Similarly the presence of the U_A(1) breaking effect is determined through the contribution of the topologically non trivial configurations that depends on the number of flavors. We also discuss how the symmetry breaking effects are reflected in the gluon correlation functions. Finally, we review the Witten Veneziano formula for the eta' mass in medium.

Nuclear Symmetry Energy from QCD sum rules

We calculate the nucleon self-energies in isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter using QCD sum rules. Taking the difference of these for the neutron and proton enables us to express the potential part of the nuclear symmetry energy in terms of local operators. We find that the scalar (vector) self-energy part gives a negative (positive) contribution to the nuclear symmetry energy which is consistent with the results from relativistic mean-field theories. Moreover, we find that an important contribution to the negative contribution of the scalar self-energy comes from the twist-4 matrix elements, whose leading density dependence can be extracted from deep inelastic scattering experiments. This suggests that the twist-4 contribution partly mimics the exchange of the $δ$ meson and that it constitutes an essential part in the origin of the nuclear symmetry energy from QCD. Our result also extends an early success of QCD sum rule method in understanding the symmetric nuclear matter in terms of QCD variables to the asymmetric nuclear matter case.

A renewed look at eta' in medium

We revisit the question of whether the U_A(1) symmetry is effectively restored in hot and dense medium. In particular, by generalizing the Witten-Veneziano formula to finite temperature, we investigate whether the mass of eta'-meson will change in medium due to the restoration of chiral symmetry.
