Field induced magnon excitation and in gap absorption of Kitaev candidate RuCl3

We use time-domain terahertz spectroscopy to measure the low energy conductivity and magnons in RuCl$_3$ under external magnetic field. At zero field, an oscillation with a frequency of 0.62 THz is clearly observed in time-domain spectrum below T$_N$, which is identified as a magnon excitation in the magnetic order state. The magnon excitation is not affected by the external magnetic field $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ when it is applied along the c-axis, but is clearly suppressed when $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ is applied within ab plane. More interestingly, when the magnetic component of THz wave $\textbf{h}(t)$ is perpendicular to the applied in-plane magnetic field, we observe another coherent oscillation at slightly higher energy scale at the field above 2 T, which is eventually suppressed for $H_{DC}>$5 T. The measurement seems to indicate that the in-plane magnetic field can lift the degeneracy of two branches of low energy magnons at $Γ$ point. The low energy optical conductivity calculated from the measured transmission spectrum is dominated by a broad continuum contribution, which is not affected by changing either temperature or external magnetic field. The continuum is likely to be related to the fractional spin excitation due to dominated Kitaev interaction in the material.

Light-induced new collective modes in La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ superconductor

We report near and mid-infrared pump c-axis terahertz probe measurement on a superconducting single crystal La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=32 K. The measurement reveals that the pump-induced change occurs predominantly at the Josephson plasma edge position below T$_c$. Upon excited by the strong near-infrared pulses, the superconducting state is severely disturbed and incoherent quasiparticle excitations develop in frequency regime above the static plasma edge. However, within very short time delay ($\sim$1.5 ps) we observe the reappearance of a very sharp Josephson plasma edge at frequency lower than the static Josephson plasma edge and the emergence of a new light-induced Josephson mode at higher energy. The results imply that the light can induce new Josephson couplings with different coupling strengths. Similar but weaker effect is observed for the mid-infrared pump. No pump induced effect is detected above T$_c$.

Tunable near- to mid-infrared pump terahertz probe spectroscopy in reflection geometry

Strong-field mid-infrared pump--terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy has been proven as a powerful tool for light control of different orders in strongly correlated materials. We report the construction of an ultrafast broadband infrared pump--THz probe system in reflection geometry. A two-output optical parametric amplifier is used for generating mid-infrared pulses with GaSe as the nonlinear crystal. The setup is capable of pumping bulk materials at wavelengths ranging from 1.2 $μ$m to 15 $μ$m and beyond, and detecting the subtle, transient photoinduced changes in the reflected electric field of the THz probe at different temperatures. As a demonstration, we present 15 $μ$m pump--THz probe measurements of a bulk EuSbTe$_{3}$ single crystal. A $0.5\%$ transient change in the reflected THz electric field can be clearly resolved. The widely tuned pumping energy could be used in mode-selective excitation experiments and applied to many strongly correlated electron systems.

Revealing a Triangular Lattice Ising Antiferromagnet in a Single-Crystal CeCd$_3$As$_3$

We report the single-crystal growth and the fundamental magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a rare-earth triangular lattice antiferromagnet CeCd$_3$As$_3$. In this rare-earth antiferromagnet, the Ce local moments form a perfect triangular lattice. Due to the spin-orbital-entangled nature of the Ce local moments, the compound exhibits extremely anisotropic antiferromagnetic couplings along the c direction and in the ab plane respectively. We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice and thus provides a prototype example for geometrical frustration. We further discuss the quantum effect of the perturbative interactions on the top of the predominant Ising interaction.

Dramatic change of photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics across Yb valence state transition in YbInCu$_4$

YbInCu$_4$ undergoes a first order structural phase transition near $T_v$=40 K associated with an abrupt change of Yb valence state. We perform ultrafast pump-probe measurement on YbInCu$_4$ and find that the expected heavy fermion properties arising from the \emph{c-f} hybridization exist only in a limited temperature range above $T_v$. Below $T_v$, the compound behaves like a normal metal though a prominent hybridization energy gap is still present in infrared measurement. We elaborate that those seemingly controversial phenomena could be well explained by assuming that the Fermi level suddenly shifts up and becomes far away from the flat \emph{f}-electron band as well as the indirect hybridization energy gap in the mixed valence state below $T_v$.

Revealing extremely low energy amplitude modes in the charge-density-wave compound LaAgSb$_2$

The layered lanthanum silver antimonide LaAgSb$_2$ was known to experience two charge density (CDW) phase transitions, which were proposed recently to be closely related to the newly identified Dirac cone. We present optical spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe measurement on the compound. The development of energy gaps were clearly observed below the phase transition temperatures in optical conductivity, which removes most part of the free carrier spectral weight. Time resolved measurement demonstrated the emergence of strong oscillations upon entering the CDW states, which were illuminated to come from the amplitude mode of CDW collective excitations. The frequencies of them are surprisingly low: only 0.12 THz for the CDW order with higher transition temperature and 0.34 THz for the lower one, which shall be caused by their small modulation wave vectors. Furthermore, the amplitude and relaxation time of photoinduced reflectivity stayed unchanged across the two phase transitions, which might be connected to the extremely low energy scales of amplitude modes.

Optical study of phase transitions in single-crystalline RuP

RuP single crystals of MnP-type orthorhombic structure were synthesized by the Sn flux method. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the compound experiences two structural phase transitions, which are further confirmed by enormous anomalies shown in temperature-dependent resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Particularly, the resistivity drops monotonically upon temperature cooling below the second transition, indicating that the material shows metallic behavior, in sharp contrast with the insulating ground state of polycrystalline samples. Optical conductivity measurements were also performed in order to unravel the mechanism of these two transitions. The measurement revealed a sudden reconstruction of band structure over a broad energy scale and a significant removal of conducting carriers below the first phase transition, while a charge-density-wave-like energy gap opens below the second phase transition.

Coexistence of superconductivity and density wave in $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$: an optical spectroscopy study

We performed an optical spectroscopy measurement on single crystals of $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$, which is a newly discovered superconductor showing a coexistence of superconductivity and density wave order. The study reveals a spectral change related to the formation density wave energy gap below $T_{DW}\approx$125 K, leading to the removal of about half of the multiple Fermi surface sheets. The ratio of 2$Δ_{DW}$/$k_B T_{DW}\approx$ 11.9 is considerably larger than the mean-field value based on the weak-coupling BCS theory. At the lowest temperature in the superconducting state, we observed opening of superconducting energy gaps $Δ_1(0) =3.4$ meV and $Δ_2(0)=7.9$ meV. The properties of superconducting state in $\mathrm{Ba_2Ti_2Fe_2As_4O}$ are similar to that in $\mathrm{BaFe_{1.85}Co_{0.15}As_2}$.

Optical spectroscopy study of the collapsed tetragonal phase of CaFe$_2$(As$_{0.935}$P$_{0.065}$)$_2$ single crystals

We present an optical spectroscopy study on P-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ which experiences a structural phase transition from tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase near 75 K. The measurement reveals a sudden reduction of low frequency spectral weight and emergence of a new feature near 3200 \cm (0.4 eV) in optical conductivity across the transition, indicating an abrupt reconstruction of band structure. The appearance of new feature is related to the interband transition arising from the sinking of hole bands near $Γ$ point below Fermi level in the cT phase, as expected from the density function theory calculations in combination with the dynamical mean field theory. However, the reduction of Drude spectral weight is at variance with those calculations. The measurement also indicates an absence of the abnormal spectral weight transfer at high energy (near 0.5-0.7 eV) in the cT phase, suggesting a suppression of electron correlation effect.

Coexistence and competition of multiple charge-density-wave orders in rare-earth tri-telluride RTe3

The occurrences of collective quantum states, such as superconductivity (SC) and charge- or spin-densitywaves (CDWs or SDWs), are among the most fascinating phenomena in solids. To date much effort has been made to explore the interplay between different orders, yet little is known about the relationship of multiple orders of the same type. Here we report optical spectroscopy study on CDWs in the rare-earth tri-telluride compounds RTe3 (R = rare earth elements). Besides the prior reported two CDW orders, the study reveals unexpectedly the presence of a third CDW order in the series which evolves systematically with the size of R element. With increased chemical pressure, the first and third CDW orders are both substantially suppressed and compete with the second one by depleting the low energy spectral weight. A complete phase diagram for the multiple CDW orders in this series is established.

Optical spectroscopy study of Nd(O,F)BiS2 single crystals

We present an optical spectroscopy study on F-substituted NdOBiS$_2$ superconducting single crystals grown using KCl/LiCl flux method. The measurement reveals a simple metallic response with a relatively low screened plasma edge near 5000 \cm. The plasma frequency is estimated to be 2.1 eV, which is much smaller than the value expected from the first-principles calculations for an electron doping level of x=0.5, but very close to the value based on a doping level of 7$\%$ of itinerant electrons per Bi site as determined by ARPES experiment. The energy scales of the interband transitions are also well reproduced by the first-principles calculations. The results suggest an absence of correlation effect in the compound, which essentially rules out the exotic pairing mechanism for superconductivity or scenario based on the strong electronic correlation effect. The study also reveals that the system is far from a CDW instability as being widely discussed for a doping level of x=0.5.

Revealing a new charge density wave order in TbTe$_3$ by optical conductivity and ultrafast pump-probe experiments

Rare-earth tri-tellurium RTe$_3$ is a typical quasi-two dimensional system which exhibits obvious charge density wave (CDW) orders. So far, RTe$_3$ with heavier R ions (Dy, Ho, Er and Tm) are believed to experience two CDW phase transitions, while the lighter ones only hold one. TbTe$_3$ is claimed to belong to the latter. However in this work we present evidences that TbTe$_3$ also possesses more than one CDW order. Aside from the one at 336 K, which was extensively studied and reported to be driven by imperfect Fermi surface nesting with a wave vector $q=(2/7 c^*)$, a new CDW energy gap (260 meV) develops at around 165 K, revealed by both infrared reflectivity spectroscopy and ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy. More intriguingly, the origin of this energy gap is different from the second CDW order in the heavier R ions-based compounds RTe$_3$ (R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm).

Superconducting energy gap versus pseudogap in hole-doped cuprates as revealed by infrared spectroscopy

We present in-plane infrared reflectance measurement on two superconducting cuprates with relatively low T$_c$: a nearly optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ with T$_c$=33 K and an underdoped La$_{1.89}$Sr$_{0.11}$CuO$_4$ with T$_c$=30 K. The measurement clearly reveals that the superconducting energy gap is distinct from the pseudogap. They have different energy scales and appear at different temperatures. The results suggest that the pseudogap is not a precursor to the superconducting state. The data also challenge the longstanding viewpoint that the superconductivity within the ab-plane is in the clean limit and the superconducting pairing energy gap could not be detected by in-plane infrared spectroscopy.

Structural phase transition in IrTe$_2$: A combined study of optical spectroscopy and band structure calculations

Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$Te$_2$ is an interesting system showing competing phenomenon between structural instability and superconductivity. Due to the large atomic numbers of Ir and Te, the spin-orbital coupling is expected to be strong in the system which may lead to nonconventional superconductivity. We grew single crystal samples of this system and investigated their electronic properties. In particular, we performed optical spectroscopic measurements, in combination with density function calculations, on the undoped compound IrTe$_2$ in an effort to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition at 280 K. The measurement revealed a dramatic reconstruction of band structure and a significant reduction of conducting carriers below the phase transition. We elaborate that the transition is not driven by the density wave type instability but caused by the crystal field effect which further splits/separates the energy levels of Te (p$_x$, p$_y$) and Te p$_z$ bands.

Effect of disorder in the charge-density-wave compounds LaTe$_{1.95}$ and CeTe$_{1.95-x}$Se$_x$ (x=0 and 0.16) as revealed by optical spectroscopy

We present optical spectroscopy measurements on rare-earth ditelluride single crystals of LaTe$_{1.95}$ and CeTe$_{1.95-x}$Se$_x$ (x=0 and 0.16). The measurements reveal formation of charge density wave energy gaps at rather high energy levels, e.g. 2$Δ\sim$ 8500 \cm for LaTe$_{1.95}$, and 6800 \cm for CeTe$_{1.95}$. More strikingly, the study reveals that, different from the rare-earth tri-tellurides, the Te vacancies and disorder effect play a key role in the low-energy charge excitations of ditelluride systems. Although an eminent peak is observed between 800 and 1500 \cm in conductivity spectra for LaTe$_{1.95}$, and CeTe$_{1.95-x}$Se$_x$ (x=0. 0.16), our analysis indicates that it could not be attributed to the formation of a small energy gap, instead it could be well accounted for by the localization modified Drude model. Our study also indicates that the low-tempreature optical spectroscopic features are distinctly different from a semiconducting CDW state with entirely gapped Fermi surfaces.

Continuous magnetic phase transition in half-frustrated Ca2Os2O7

We present the specific heat, magnetization, optical spectroscopy measurements and the firstprinciple calculations on the Weberite structure Ca2Os2O7 single crystal/polycrystalline sample. The Ca2Os2O7 shows a Curie-Weiss nature at high temperature and goes into a ferrimagnetic insulating state at 327 K on cooling. A λ-like peak is observed at 327 K in the specific heat implying a second-order phase transition. The vanishing electronic specific heat at low temperature suggests a full energy gap. At high temperature above the transition, small amount of itinerant carriers with short life time τare observed, which is gapped at 20 K with a direct gap of 0:24 eV . Our first principle calculations indicate that the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) correlation with intermediate Coulomb repulsion U could effectively split Os(4b) t2g bands and push them away from Fermi level(EF). On the other hand, a non-collinear magnetic interaction is needed to push the Os(4c) bands away from EF, which could be induced by Os(4c)-Os(4c) frustration. Therefore, AFM correlation, Coulomb repulsion U and non-collinear interaction all play important roles for the insulating ground state in Ca2Os2O7.

Single crystal growth and optical conductivity of SrPt$_2$As$_2$ superconductors

SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type structure were synthesized by self-melting technique. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, specific heat and optical spectroscopy measurements were conducted to elucidate the properties of SrPt$_2$As$_2$. SrPt$_2$As$_2$ single crystals exhibit a superconducting transition at 5.2K, experiencing a structural phase transition well above room temperature (about 455K). The superconducting and structural phase transition temperatures are both reduced by 6% Iridium doping. Both pure SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and the doped single crystals are revealed to be highly metallic with rather high plasma frequencies. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement revealed two gap-like suppression features. We elaborated that the one at higher energy scale could be ascribed to the correlation effect, while the other one at lower energy scale is related to the structural phase transition, leading to the removal of a small portion of the Fermi surfaces.

Two successive field-induced spin-flop transitions in single-crystalline CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$

CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-structure compound, undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at \emph{T$_{N}$}=76K with the magnetic moments being aligned parallel to the \emph{c} axis. Electronic transport measurement reveals that the coupling between conducting carriers and magnetic order in CaCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is much weaker comparing to the parent compounds of iron pnictide. Applying magnetic field along \emph{c} axis induces two successive spin-flop transitions in its magnetic state. The magnetization saturation behaviors with \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$c} and \emph{\textbf{H}$\parallel$ab} at 10K indicate that the antiferromagnetic coupling along \emph{c} direction is very weak. The interlayer antiferromagntic coupling constant \emph{J$_{c}$} is estimated to be about 2 meV.
