Right-handed weak currents in neutrinoless $ββ$ decays and ton scale $ββ$ detectors

Right handed weak-currents (RHCs) in the left-right (L-R) symmetric model for neutrinoless double beta decays (DBDs) of both the $0^+~\to~0^+$ and $0^+~\to~2^+$ transitions are discussed from both theoretical and experimental view points. $<λ>$ and $<η>$-terms are related by $<λ>/<η> \approx \tanβ$, which is constrained in the regions of $1-60$ for SUSY grand unified theories (GUTs) and of $1-165$ for non-SUSY GUTs. The enhancement mechanisms of the $<η>$ term over the $<λ>$ term in the $0^+$ transition are shown, and the $Δ$ isobar contribution to the NME for the transition to the 2$^+$ state is found to be of the order of $20\%$ of the NME with the quenched weak coupling. The new and interesting RHC regions of $<λ>\approx 5\times10^{-8}$ and $<η>\approx 1.5\times 10^{-10}$ are shown to be exclusively explored by measuring both the $ββ$ and $γ$ rays associated with the ground and excited DBDs by means of the ton-scale DBD detectors for the IH (inverted hierarchy) $ν$-masses. The actual RHCs to be studied depend on the RHC NMEs.

A New Approach for Measuring the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Electric Dipole Moment

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_μ = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_μ$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_μ$ and $d_μ$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_μ$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5\times 10^{-21}~e\cdot\mbox{cm}$.

Development of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with external feedback scheme

We report on the operation of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with an external feedback scheme, and discuss the use of ${}^{131}$Xe as a comagnetometer in measurements of the ${}^{129}$Xe spin precession frequency. By applying a correction based on the observed change in the ${}^{131}$Xe frequency, the frequency instability due to magnetic field and cell temperature drifts are eliminated by two orders of magnitude. The frequency precision of 6.2 $μ$Hz is obtained for a 10$^4$ s averaging time, suggesting the possibility of future improvement to $\approx$ 1 nHz by improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the observation.

Filling the gaps between model predictions and their prerequisites in electric dipole moments

We clarify the conditions or assumptions under which theoretical predictions of various models beyond the standard model give mainly in electric dipole moments. The correct interpretation of those conditions seems to be indispensable to the refinements of model building as well as to the mutual reliance in experimental and theoritical communities. The connections of these analyses to the recent experimental results at the LHC and the other places are also discussed.

ASTRO-H White Paper - Shock and Acceleration

We discuss the prospects for a progress to be brought by ASTRO-H in the understanding of the physics of particle acceleration in astrophysical environments. Particular emphasis will be put on the synergy with gamma-ray astronomy, in the context of the rapid developments of recent years. Selected topics include: shock acceleration in supernova remnants (SNRs) and in clusters of galaxies, and the extreme particle acceleration seen in gamma-ray binaries. Since the hydrodynamics and thermal properties of shocks in these objects are covered in other white papers, we focus on the aspects related to the process of particle acceleration. In the case of SNRs, we emphasize the importance of SXS and HXI observations of the X-ray emission of young SNRs dominated by synchrotron radiation, particularly SNR RX J1713.7-3946. We argue that the HXI observations of young SNRs, as a byproduct of SXS observations dedicated for studies of the shock dynamics and nucleosynthesis, will provide powerful constraints on shock acceleration theories. Also, we discuss gamma-ray binary systems, where extreme particle acceleration is inferred regardless of the nature (a neutron star or a black hole) of the compact object. Finally, for galaxy clusters, we propose searches for hard X-ray emission of secondary electrons from interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays accelerated at accretion shocks. This should allow us to understand the contribution of galaxy clusters to the flux of cosmic rays above 10^18 eV.

$μ- e$ Conversion With Four Generations

We study $μ- e$ conversion with sequential four generations. A large mass for the fourth generation neutrino can enhance the conversion rate by orders of magnitude. We compare constraints obtained from $μ- e$ conversion using experimental bounds on various nuclei with those from $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to e\bar e e$. We find that the current bound from $μ- e$ conversion with Au puts the most stringent constraint in this model. The relevant flavor changing parameter $λ_{μe} = V^*_{μ4}V_{e4}^{}$ is constrained to be less than $1.6\times 10^{-5}$ for the fourth generation neutrino mass larger than 100 GeV. Implications for future $μ-e$ conversion, $μ\to eγ$ and $μ\to e\bar e e$ experiments are discussed.

Observation of an energetic radiation burst from mountain-top thunderclouds

During thunderstorms on 2008 September 20, a simultaneous detection of gamma rays and electrons was made at a mountain observatory in Japan located 2770 m above sea level. Both emissions, lasting 90 seconds, were associated with thunderclouds rather than lightning. The photon spectrum, extending to 10 MeV, can be interpreted as consisting of bremsstrahlung gamma rays arriving from a source which is 60 - 130 m in distance at 90% confidence level. The observed electrons are likely to be dominated by a primary population escaping from an acceleration region in the clouds.

Can The Majorana neutrino CP-violating phases be restricted ?

We reanalyze the constraints in neutrino masses and MNS lepton mixing parameters using the new data from the terrestrial (KamLAND) and astrophysical (WMAP) observations together with the HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. We discuss the possibility of getting the bound for the Majorana CP violating phase.

Constraints from Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We examine the constraints from the recent HEIDELBERG-MOSCOW double beta decay experiment. It leads us to the almost degenerate or inverse hierarchy neutrino mass scenario. In this scenario, we obtain possible upper bounds for the Majorana CP violating phase in the lepton sector by incorporating the data from the neutrino oscillation, the single beta decay experiments, and from the astrophysical observation. We also predict the neutrino mass that may be measurable in the future beta decay experiments.

How Far Can the SO(10) Two Higgs Model Describe the Observed Neutrino Masses and Mixings ?

Can the SO(10) model with one {\bf 10} and one {\bf 126} Higgs scalars give the observed masses and mixings of quarks and leptons without any other additional Higgs scalars? Recently, at least, for quarks and charged leptons, it has been demonstrated that it is possible. However, for the neutrinos, it is usually said that parameters which are determined from the quark and charged lepton masses cannot give the observed large neutrino mixings. This problem is systematically investigated, and it is concluded that the present data cannot exclude SO(10) model with two Higgs scalars although it cannot give the best fit values of the data.

Phenomenological Analysis of Lepton and Quark Mass Matrices

We propose a model that all quark and lepton mass matrices originally have the same zero texture. Namely their (1,1), (1,3) and (3,1) components are zeros. For the neutrino mass matrix, we further impose the symmetry between the second and the third generations. Then the neutrino mass matrix has a maximal (ν_μ) - (ν_τ) mixing. Our model is consistent with all the neutrino oscillation experiments and the experimental data in the quark sector too. The neutrino mass matrix can also be well incorporated with the seesaw mechanism.

Second order Lax pairs of nonlinear partial differential equations with Schwarz variants

In this paper, we study the possible second order Lax operators for all the possible (1+1)-dimensional models with Schwarz variants and some special types of high dimensional models. It is shown that for every (1+1)-dimensional model and some special types of high dimensional models which possess Schwarz variants may have a second order Lax pair. The exiplicit Lax pairs for (1+1)-dimensional Korteweg de Vries equation, Harry Dym equation, Boussinesq equation, Caudry-Dodd-Gibbon-Sawada-Kortera equation, Kaup-Kupershmidt equation, Riccati equation, (2+1)-dimensional breaking soliton equation and a generalized (2+1)-dimensional fifth order equation are given.

Can the SO(10) Model with Two Higgs Doublets Reproduce the Observed Fermion Masses?

It is usually considered that the SO(10) model with one 10 and one 126 Higgs scalars cannot reproduce the observed quark and charged lepton masses. Against this conventional conjecture, we find solutions of the parameters which can give the observed fermion mass spectra. The SO(10) model with one 10 and one 120 Higgs scalars is also discussed.

MNS Parameters from Neutrino Oscillations, Single Beta Decay and Double Beta Decay

We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix =66rom the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation, tritium beta decay, and neutrinoless double beta decay for Majorana neutrinos. We show that the small mixing angle solutions for solar neutrino problem are disfavored for small averaged mass ($ $) of neutrinoless double beta decay ($\leq 0.01$ eV) in the inverse neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. This is the case even in the normal mass hierarchy scenario except for very restrictive value of the averaged neutrino mass ($\bar{m_ν}$) of single beta decay. The lower mass bound for $\bar{m_ν}$ is given from the present neutrino oscillation data. We obtain some relations between $ $ and $\bar{m_ν}$. The constraints on the Majorana CP violating phases are also given.

Graphical Representation of CP Violation Effects in Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

We illustrate the graphical method that gives the constraints on the parameters appearing in the neutrino oscillation experiments and the neutrinoless double beta decay. This method is applicable in three and four generations. Though this method is valid for more general case, we examine explicitly the cases in which the CP violating factors take $\pm 1$ or $\pm i$ in the neutrinoless double beta decay for illustrative clearance. We also discuss some mass matrix models which lead to the above CP violating factors.

CP Violations in Lepton Number Violation Processes and Neutrino Oscillations

We examine the constraints on the MNS lepton mixing matrix from the present and future experimental data of the neutrino oscillation and lepton number violation processes. We introduce a graphical representation of the CP violation phases which appear in the lepton number violation processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the $μ^--e^+$ conversion, and the K decay, $K^-\toπ^+μ^-μ^-.$ Using this graphical representation, we derive the constraints on the CP violation phases in the lepton sector.

SO(10) GUT and Quark-Lepton Mass Matrices

The phenomenological model that all quark and lepton mass matrices have the same zero texture, namely their (1,1), (1,3) and (3,1) components are zeros, is discussed in the context of SO(10) Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). The mass matrices of type I for quarks are consistent with the experimental data in the quark sector. For the lepton sector, consistent fitting to the data of neutrino oscillation experiments force us to use the mass matrix for the charged leptons which is slightly deviated from type I. Given quark masses and charged lepton masses, the model includes 19 free parameters, whereas the SO(10) GUTs gives 16 constrained equations. Changing the remaining three parameters freely, we can fit all the entries of the CKM quark mixing matrix and the MNS lepton mixing matrix, and three neutrino masses consistently with the present experimental data.

Lepton and Quark Mass Matrices

We propose a model that all quark and lepton mass matrices have the same zero texture. Namely their (1,1), (1,3) and (3,1) components are zeros. The mass matrices are classified into two types I and II. Type I is consistent with the experimental data in quark sector. For lepton sector, if seesaw mechanism is not used, Type II allows a large $ν_μ- ν_τ$ mixing angle. However, severe compatibility with all neutrino oscillation experiments forces us to use the seesaw mechanism. If we adopt the seesaw mechanism, it turns out that Type I instead of II can be consistent with experimental data in the lepton sector too.
