Extensivity of Irreversible Current and Stability in Causal Dissipative Hydrodynamics

We extended our formulation of causal dissipative hydrodynamics [T. Koide \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. \textbf{C75}, 034909 (2007)] to be applicable to the ultra-relativistic regime by considering the extensiveness of irreversible currents. The new equation has a non-linear term which suppresses the effect of viscosity. We found that such a term is necessary to guarantee the positive definiteness of the inertia term and stabilize numerical calculations in ultra-relativistic initial conditions. Because of the suppression of the viscosity, the behavior of the fluid is more close to that of the ideal fluid. Our result is essentially same as that from the extended irreversible thermodynamics, but is different from the Israel-Stewart theory. A possible origin of the difference is discussed.

Dynamical Origin of Power Spectra

We discuss a possible origin of Tsallis' statistics from the correlation among constituents which reduces the phase space of the system. We also show that in the system of coupled linear harmonic oscillators can exhibit a Tsallis type behavior.

Memory Effects and Transport Coefficients for Non-Newtonian Fluids

We discuss the roles of viscosity in relativistic fluid dynamics from the point of view of memory effects. Depending on the type of quantity to which the memory effect is applied, different terms appear in higher order corrections. We show that when the memory effect applies on the extensive quantities, the hydrodynamic equations of motion become non-singular. We further discuss the question of memory effect in the derivation of transport coefficients from a microscopic theory. We generalize the application of the Green-Kubo-Nakano (GKN) to calculate transport coefficients in the framework of projection operator formalism, and derive the general formula when the fluid is non-Newtonian.

Transport Coefficients of Non-Newtonian Fluid and Causal Dissipative Hydrodynamics

A new formula to calculate the transport coefficients of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics is derived by using the projection operator method (Mori-Zwanzig formalism) in [T. Koide, Phys. Rev. E75, 060103(R) (2007)]. This is an extension of the Green-Kubo-Nakano (GKN) formula to the case of non-Newtonian fluids, which is the essential factor to preserve the relativistic causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. This formula is the generalization of the GKN formula in the sense that it can reproduce the GKN formula in a certain limit. In this work, we extend the previous work so as to apply to more general situations.

Stability and Causality in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics

The stability and causality of the Landau-Lifshitz theory and the Israel-Stewart type causal dissipative hydrodynamics are discussed. We show that the problem of acausality and instability are correlated in relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics and instability is induced by acausality. We further discuss the stability of the scaling solution. The scaling solution of the causal dissipative hydrodynamics can be unstable against inhomogeneous perturbations.

Shock propagation and stability in causal dissipative hydrodynamics

We studied the shock propagation and its stability with the causal dissipative hydrodynamics in 1+1 dimensional systems. We show that the presence of the usual viscosity is not enough to stabilize the solution. This problem is solved by introducing an additional viscosity which is related to the coarse-graining scale of the theory.

Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study of Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 across the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3, which is ferromagnetic for Sr concentration x > 0.3, has been studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in Ru 3p and O 1s core-level x-ray absorption. XMCD signals appear at x ~ 0.3 and monotonically increases with x in the ferromagnetic phase. While the monotonic increase of the XMCD signals with x is of a typical Stoner-type, the absence of appreciable change in the spectral line shapes of both the Ru 3p and O 1s XMCD spectra indicate that the itinerant-electron ferromagnetism in Ca_1-xSr_xRuO_3 is influenced by strong electron correlation.

Relativistic generalization of Brownian Motion

The relativistic generalization of the Brownian motion is discussed. We show that the transformation property of the noise term is determined by requiring for the equilibrium distribution function to be Lorentz invariant, such as the Jüttner distribution function. It is shown that this requirement generates an entanglement between the force term and the noise so that the noise itself should not be a covariant quantity.

Memory Effect and Fast Spinodal Decomposition

We consider the modification of the Cahn-Hilliard equation when a time delay process through a memory function is taken into account. We then study the process of spinodal decomposition in fast phase transitions associated with a conserved order parameter. The introduced memory effect plays an important role to obtain a finite group velocity. Then, we discuss the constraint for the parameters to satisfy causality. The memory effect is seen to affect the dynamics of phase transition at short times and has the effect of delaying, in a significant way, the process of rapid growth of the order parameter that follows a quench into the spinodal region.

Microscopic formula for transport coefficients of causal hydrodynamics

The Green-Kubo-Nakano formula should be modified in relativistic hydrodynamics because of the problem of acausality and the breaking of sum rules. In this work, we propose a formula to calculate the transport coefficients of causal hydrodynamics based on the projection operator method. As concrete examples, we derive the expressions for the diffusion coefficient, the shear viscosity coefficient, and corresponding relaxation times.

Relativistic Dissipative Hydrodynamics: A Minimal Causal Theory

We present a new formalism for the theory of relativistic dissipative hydrodynamics. Here, we look for the minimal structure of such a theory which satisfies the covariance and causality by introducing the memory effect in irreversible currents. Our theory has a much simpler structure and thus has several advantages for practical purposes compared to the Israel-Stewart theory (IS). It can readily be applied to the full three-dimensional hydrodynamical calculations. We apply our formalism to the Bjorken model and the results are shown to be analogous to the IS.

Incorporating Memory Effects in Phase Separation Processes

We consider the modification of the Cahn-Hilliard equation when a time delay process through a memory function is taken into account. We then study the process of spinodal decomposition in fast phase transitions associated with a conserved order parameter. Finite-time memory effects are seen to affect the dynamics of phase transition at short times and have the effect of delaying, in a significant way, the process of rapid growth of the order parameter that follows a quench into the spinodal region. These effects are important in several systems characterized by fast processes, like nonequilibrium dynamics in the early universe and in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Indication of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in Ti1-xCoxO2-d thin film: An x-ray magnetic circular dichroism study

Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co L2,3 edges of Co doped rutile TiO2 at room temperature have revealed clear multiplet features characteristic of ferromagnetic Co2+ ions coordinated by O2- ions, being in sharp contrast to the featureless XMCD spectrum of Co metal or metallic clusters. The absorption and XMCD spectra agree well with a full atomic-multiplet calculation for the Co2+ high-spin state in the D2h-symmetry crystal field at the Ti site in rutile TiO2. The results indicate that the ferromagnetism arises from the Co2+ ions substituting the Ti4+ ions.

Finite-size effects on the QCD phase diagram

We discuss the finite-size effects on the chiral phase transition in QCD. We employ the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and calculate the thermodynamic potential in the mean-field approximation. Finite-size effects on the thermodynamic potential are taken into account by employing the multiple reflection expansion. The critical temperature is lowered and the order of the phase transition is changed form first to second as the size of the system of interest is reduced.

Microscopic Derivation of Causal Diffusion Equation using Projection Operator Method

We derive a coarse-grained equation of motion of a number density by applying the projection operator method to a non-relativistic model. The derived equation is an integrodifferential equation and contains the memory effect. The equation is consistent with causality and the sum rule associated with the number conservation in the low momentum limit, in contrast to usual acausal diffusion equations given by using the Fick's law. After employing the Markov approximation, we find that the equation has the similar form to the causal diffusion equation. Our result suggests that current-current correlations are not necessarily adequate as the definition of diffusion constants.

Phenomenological approach to the critical dynamics of the QCD phase transition revisited

The phenomenological dynamics of the QCD critical phenomena is revisited. Recently, Son and Stephanov claimed that the dynamical universality class of the QCD phase transition belongs to model H. In their discussion, they employed a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation for the net baryon number density, which is a conserved quantity. We derive the Langevin equation for the net baryon number density, i.e., the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Furthermore, they discussed the mode coupling induced through the {\it irreversible} current. Here, we show the {\it reversible} coupling can play a dominant role for describing the QCD critical dynamics and that the dynamical universality class does not necessarily belong to model H.
