Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Ba$_2R_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ ($R$ = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm-Lu) double perovskites

A new series of cubic double perovskites Ba$_2R_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ ($R$ = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm-Lu) was synthesized via solid state reaction. The $R^{3+}$ and Te$^{6+}$ ions are ordered on alternating octahedral sites, with the rare earth sites 2/3 occupied to balance the charge. The lattice parameters decrease monotonically from a = 8.5533(3) Å for Ba$_2$La$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ to a = 8.3310(4) Å for Ba$_2$Lu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$. The lattice parameter for $R$ = Y is close to that of Ho. Analysis of the resulting bond lengths indicates a structural relaxation around the $R$ ion site. Ba$_2$La$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$, Ba$_2$Y$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$Lu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ show primarily temperature-independent magnetic susceptibility due to the lack of a local rare earth moment. For Ba$_2$Sm$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$Eu$_{2/3}$TeO$_6$, the susceptibilities are influenced by Van Vleck-like contributions from excited state multiplets. For the remaining members, the Curie-Weiss law is followed with low-temperature deviations that can be associated with various degrees of crystalline electric field splitting. No magnetic ordering was observed down to 1.8 K in any of the compounds.

Growth and characterization of BaZnGa

We report the growth, structure and characterization of BaZnGa, identifying it as the sole known ternary compound in the Ba-Zn-Ga system. Single crystals of BaZnGa can be grown out of excess Ba-Zn and adopt a tI36 structure type. There are three unique Ba sites and three M\,=\,Zn/Ga sites. Using DFT calculations we can argue that whereas one of these three M sites is probably solely occupied by Ga, the other two M sites, most likely, have mixed Zn/Ga occupancy. Temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest that BaZnGa is a poor metal with no electronic or magnetic phase transitions between 2\,K and 300\,K.

Growth, Crystal Structure and Magnetic Characterization of Zn-Stabilized CePtIn4

The growth and characterization of CePtIn4, stabilized by 10% Zn substitution for In, is reported. The new material is orthorhombic, space group Cmcm (No. 63), with lattice parameters a = 4.51751(4) Å, b = 16.7570(2) Å, and c = 7.36682(8) Å, and the refined crystal composition has 10% of Zn substituted for In, i.e. the crystals are CePt(In3.6Zn0.1)4. Crystals were grown using a self-flux method: only growths containing Zn yielded CePtIn4 crystals, while Ce3Pt4In13 crystals formed when Zn was not present. Anisotropic temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for single crystals show that Zn-stabilized CePtIn4 orders magnetically at ~1.9 K. High-temperature Curie-Weiss fits indicate an effective moment of ~2.30 muB/ Ce and a directionally averaged Weiss-temperature of approximately - 9 K. Specific heat data shows a peak consistent with the ordering temperature seen in the magnetic susceptibility data. Zn-stabilized CePtIn4 is metallic and displays no superconducting transition down to 0.14 K.

Electronic structure of RSb (R = Y, Ce, Gd, Dy, Ho, Tm, Lu) studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electronic structure calculations to study the electronic properties of rare-earth monoantimonides RSb (R = Y, Ce, Gd, Dy, Ho, Tm, Lu). The experimentally measured Fermi surface (FS) of RSb consists of at least two concentric hole pockets at the $Γ$ point and two intersecting electron pockets at the $X$ point. These data agree relatively well with the electronic structure calculations. Detailed photon energy dependence measurements using both synchrotron and laser ARPES systems indicate that there is at least one Fermi surface sheet with strong three-dimensionality centered at the $Γ$ point. Due to the "lanthanide contraction", the unit cell of different rare-earth monoantimonides shrinks when changing rare-earth ion from CeSb to LuSb. This results in the differences in the chemical potentials in these compounds, which is demonstrated by both ARPES measurements and electronic structure calculations. Interestingly, in CeSb, the intersecting electron pockets at the $X$ point seem to be touching the valence bands, forming a four-fold degenerate Dirac-like feature. On the other hand, the remaining rare-earth monoantimonides show significant gaps between the upper and lower bands at the $X$ point. Furthermore, similar to the previously reported results of LaBi, a Dirac-like structure was observed at the $Γ$ point in YSb, CeSb, and GdSb, compounds showing relatively high magnetoresistance. This Dirac-like structure may contribute to the unusually large magnetoresistance in these compounds.

Pressure induced half-collapsed-tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

We report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ established using high pressure electrical resistivity, magnetization and high energy x-ray diffraction measurements up to 6 GPa. With increasing pressure, both resistivity and magnetization data show that the bulk superconducting transition of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is suppressed and then disappears at $p$ $\gtrsim$ 4 GPa. High pressure x-ray data clearly indicate a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure that coincides with the abrupt loss of bulk superconductivity near 4 GPa. The x-ray data, combined with resistivity data, indicate that the collapsed tetragonal transition line is essentially vertical, occuring at 4.0(5) GPa for temperatures below 150 K. Band structure calculations also find a sudden transition to a collapsed tetragonal state near 4 GPa, as As-As bonding takes place across the Ca-layer. Bonding across the K-layer only occurs for $p$ $\geq$ 12 GPa. These findings demonstrate a new type of collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase.

$^{57}$Fe Mössbauer study of stoichiometric iron based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a comparison to KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CaFe$_2$As$_2$

$^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra at different temperatures between $\sim 5$ K and $\sim 300$ K were measured on an oriented mosaic of single crystals of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ . The data indicate that CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is a well formed compound with narrow spectral lines, no traces of other, Fe - containing, secondary phases in the spectra and no static magnetic order. There is no discernible feature at the superconducting transition temperature in any of the hyperfine parameters. The temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting approximately follows the empirical "$T^{3/2}$ law". The hyperfine parameters of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ are compared with those for KFe$_2$As$_2$ measured in this work, and the literature data for CaFe$_2$As$_2$, and were found to be in between those for these two, ordered, 122 compounds, in agreement with the gross view of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ as a structural analog of KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CaFe$_2$As$_2$ that has alternating Ca - and K - layers in the structure.

Tuning the Kondo effect in Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$

We study the evolution of the Kondo effect in heavy fermion compounds, Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (0$\leqslant$ x $\leqslant$ 1), by means of temperature-dependent electric resistivity and specific heat. The ground state of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be well described by a Kondo model with degeneracy $N$ = 8 and a $T_K\sim$30 K. In the presence of a very similar total CEF splitting with YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, the ground state of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is close to a Kondo state with degeneracy $N$ = 2 and a much lower $T_K\sim$ 2 K. Upon Co substitution, the coherence temperature of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is suppressed, accompanied by an emerging Schottky-like feature in specific heat associated with the thermal depopulation of CEF levels upon cooling. For 0.4$\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.9, the ground state remains roughly the same which can be qualitatively understood by Kondo effect in the presence of CEF splitting. There is no clear indication of Kondo coherence observable in resistivity within this substitution range down to 500 mK. The coherence re-appears at around x$\gtrsim$ 0.9 and the coherence temperature increases with higher Co concentration levels.

Physical properties of single crystalline $R$Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ ($R$ = Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) and the search for in-plane magnetic anisotropy in hexagonal systems

Single crystals of $R$Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ ($R$=Y, Ce-Nd, Gd-Dy, Yb) were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by measurements of room-temperature x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent specific heat and temperature-, field-dependent resistivity and anisotropic magnetization. YMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is a non-local-moment-bearing metal with an electronic specific heat coefficient, $γ\sim$ 15 mJ/mol K$^2$. Yb is divalent and basically non-moment bearing in YbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Ce is trivalent in CeMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ with two magnetic transitions being observed at 2.1 K and 1.5 K. PrMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ does not exhibit any magnetic phase transition down to 0.5 K. The other members being studied ($R$=Nd, Gd-Dy) all exhibits antiferromagnetic transitions at low-temperatures ranging from 3.2 K for NdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ to 11.9 K for TbMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Whereas GdMg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ is isotropic in its paramagnetic state due to zero angular momentum ($L$=0), all the other local-moment-bearing members manifest an anisotropic, planar magnetization in their paramagnetic states. To further study this planar anisotropy, detailed angular-dependent magnetization was carried out on magnetically diluted (Y$_{0.99}$Tb$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$ and (Y$_{0.99}$Dy$_{0.01}$)Mg$_{2}$Cu$_{9}$. Despite the strong, planar magnetization anisotropy, the in-plane magnetic anisotropy is weak and field-dependent. A set of crystal electric field parameters are proposed to explain the observed magnetic anisotropy.

Asymmetric mass acquisition in LaBi - a new topological semimetal candidate

We use our high resolution He-lamp based, tunable laser-based ARPES measurements and density functional theory calculations to study the electronic properties of LaBi, a binary system that was proposed to be a member of a new family of topological semimetals. Both bulk and surface bands are present in the spectra. The dispersion of the surface state is highly unusual. It resembles a Dirac cone, but upon closer inspection we can clearly detect an energy gap. The bottom band follows roughly a parabolic dispersion. The dispersion of the top band remains very linear, "V" shape like, with the tip approaching very closely to the extrapolated location of Dirac point. Such asymmetric mass acquisition is highly unusual and opens a possibility of a new topological phenomena that has yet to be understood.

Enhancement of the superconducting gap by nesting in CaKFe4As4 - a new high temperature superconductor

We use high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory with experimentally obtained crystal structure parameters to study the electronic properties of CaKFe4As4. In contrast to related CaFe2As2 compounds, CaKFe4As4 has high Tc of 35K at stochiometric composition. This presents unique opportunity to study properties of high temperature superconductivity of iron arsenic superconductors in absence of doping or substitution. The Fermi surface consists of three hole pockets at $Γ$ and two electron pockets at the $M$ point. We find that the values of the superconducting gap are nearly isotropic, but significantly different for each of the FS sheets. Most importantly we find that the overall momentum dependence of the gap magnitudes plotted across the entire Brillouin zone displays a strong deviation from the simple cos(kx)cos(ky) functional form of the gap function, proposed in the scenario of the Cooper-pairing driven by a short range antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Instead, the maximum value of the gap is observed for FS sheets that are closest to the ideal nesting condition in contrast to the previous observations in some other ferropnictides. These results provide strong support for the multiband character of superconductivity in CaKFe4As4, in which Cooper pairing forms on the electron and the hole bands interacting via dominant interband repulsive interaction, enhanced by FS nesting}.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance and upper critical fields up to 63 T in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ single crystals

We report the temperature dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}(T)$ parallel to the c-axis and $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}(T)$ parallel to the ab-plane of single crystalline CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ inferred from the measurements of the temperature-dependent resistance in static magnetic fields up to 14 T and magnetoresistance in pulsed fields up to 63 T. We show that the observed decrease of the anisotropy parameter $γ(T)=H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}/H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}$ from $\simeq 2.5$ at $T_c$ to $\simeq 1.5$ at 25 K can be explained by interplay of paramagnetic pairbreaking and orbital effects in a multiband theory of $H_{c2}$. The slopes of $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\text{c}}/dT\simeq-4.4$ T/K and $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}/dT \simeq-10.9$ T/K at $T_c$ yield an electron mass anisotropy of $m_{ab}/m_c\simeq 1/6$ and short coherence lengths $ξ_c\simeq 5.8\,\textÅ$ and $ξ_{ab}\simeq 14.3\,\textÅ$. The behavior of $H_{c\text{2}}(T)$ turns out to be similar to that of the optimal doped (Ba,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$, with $H_{c\text{2}}^{\text{ab}}(0)$ extrapolating to $\simeq 92$ T, well above the BCS paramagnetic limit.

Hysteretic magnetoresistance and unconventional anomalous Hall effect in the frustrated magnet TmB_4

We study TmB_4, a frustrated magnet on the Archimedean Shastry-Sutherland lattice, through magnetization and transport experiments. The lack of anisotropy in resistivity shows that TmB_4 is an electronically three-dimensional system. The magnetoresistance (MR) is hysteretic at low-temperature even though a corresponding hysteresis in magnetization is absent. The Hall resistivity shows unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and is linear above saturation despite a large MR. We propose that complex structures at magnetic domain walls may be responsible for the hysteretic MR and may also lead to the AHE.

Use of frit-disc crucibles for routine and exploratory solution growth of single crystalline samples

Solution growth of single crystals from high temperature solutions often involves the separation of residual solution from the grown crystals. For many growths of intermetallic compounds, this separation has historically been achieved with the use of plugs of silica wool. Whereas this is generally efficient in a mechanical sense, it leads to a significant contamination of the decanted liquid with silica fibers. In this paper we present a simple design for frit-disc alumina crucible sets that has made their use in the growth single crystals from high temperature solutions both simple and affordable. An alumina frit-disc allows for the clean separation of the residual liquid from the solid phase. This allows for the reuse of the decanted liquid, either for further growth of the same phase, or for subsequent growth of other, related phases. In this paper we provide examples of the growth of isotopically substituted TbCd$_{6}$ and icosahedral i-$R$Cd quasicrystals, as well as the separation of (i) the closely related Bi$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$S$_{2}$ and Bi$_{2}$Rh$_{3.5}$S$_{2}$ phases and (ii) PrZn$_{11}$ and Pr$_{2}$Zn$_{17}$.

Phase transition in bulk single crystals and thin films of VO2 by nano-infrared spectroscopy and imaging

We have systematically studied a variety of vanadium dioxide (VO2) crystalline forms, including bulk single crystals and oriented thin films, using infrared (IR) near-field spectroscopic imaging techniques. By measuring the IR spectroscopic responses of electrons and phonons in VO2 with sub-grain-size spatial resolution (~20 nm), we show that epitaxial strain in VO2 thin films not only triggers spontaneous local phase separations but also leads to intermediate electronic and lattice states that are intrinsically different from those found in bulk. Generalized rules of strain and symmetry dependent mesoscopic phase inhomogeneity are also discussed. These results set the stage for a comprehensive understanding of complex energy landscapes that may not be readily determined by macroscopic approaches.

Origin of modulated phases and magnetic hysteresis in TmB_4

We investigate the low temperature magnetic phases in TmB_4, a metallic quantum magnet on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice, using co-ordinated experimental and theoretical studies. Our results provide an explanation for the appearance of the intriguing fractional plateau in TmB_4 and accompanying magnetic hysteresis. Together with observation of the bump in the half-plateau, our results support the picture that the magnetization plateau structure in TmB_4 is strongly influenced by the zero-field modulated phases. We present a phenomenological model to explain the appearance of the modulated phases and a microscopic Hamiltonian that captures the complete magnetic behavior of TmB_4.

Study of 57Fe Mossbauer effect in RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd)

We report measurements of 57Fe Mossbauer spectra for RFe2Zn20 ( R = Lu, Yb, Gd) from ~ 4.5 K to room temperature. The obtained isomer shift values are very similar for all three compounds, their temperature dependence was analyzed within the Debye model and resulted in an estimate of the Debye temperatures of 450-500 K. The values of quadrupole splitting at room temperature change with the cubic lattice constant a in a linear fashion. For GdFe2Zn20, ferromagnetic order is seen as an appearance of a sextet in the spectra. The 57Fe site hyperfine field for T = 0 was evaluated to be ~ 2.4 T.

Physical properties of V$_{1-x}$Ti$_{x}$O$_{2}$ (0 $<$ x $<$ 0.187) single crystals

Free standing, low strain, single crystals of pure and titanium doped VO$_{2}$ were grown out of an excess of V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ using high temperature solution growth techniques. At $T_{MI} \sim$ 340 K, pure VO$_{2}$ exhibits a clear first-order phase transition from a high-temperature paramagnetic tetragonal phase (R) to a low-temperature non-magnetic monoclinic phase (M1). With Ti doping, another monoclinic phase (M2) emerges between the R and M1 phases. The phase transition temperature between R and M2 increases with increasing Ti doping while the transition temperature between M2 and M1 decreases.

Anisotropic $H_{c2}$, thermodynamic and transport measurements, and pressure dependence of $T_{c}$ in K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ single crystals

We present a detailed study of single crystalline K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ and analyze its thermodynamic and transport properties, anisotropic $H_{c2}(T)$, and initial pressure-dependence of $T_{c}$. In zero-field, the temperature-dependent resistivity is metallic. Deviation from a linear temperature-dependence is evident below 100 K and a $T^{3}$-dependence is roughly followed from just above $T_{c}$ ($\sim$10 K) to $\sim$ 40 K. Anisotropic $H_{c2}(T)$ data were measured up to 140 kOe with field applied along and perpendicular to the rod-like crystals. For the applied field perpendicular to the rod, $H_{c2}(T)$ is linear with a slope $\sim$-70 kOe/K. For field applied along the rod, the slope is about -120 kOe/K below 70 kOe. Above 70 kOe, the magnitude of the slope decreases to $\sim$-70 kOe/K. The electronic specific heat coefficient, $γ$, just above $T_{c}$, is 73 mJ/mol K$^{2}$; the Debye temperature, $Θ_{D}$, is 220 K. The specific heat jump at the superconducting transition $Δ$C $\sim$ 2.2 $γT_{c}$. Finally, for hydrostatic pressures up to $\sim$7 kbar, $T_{c}$ decreases under pressure linearly at a rate of -0.034 K/kbar.
