Topological quantum phase transitions retrieved through unsupervised machine learning

The discovery of topological features of quantum states plays an important role in modern condensed matter physics and various artificial systems. Due to the absence of local order parameters, the detection of topological quantum phase transitions remains a challenge. Machine learning may provide effective methods for identifying topological features. In this work, we show that the unsupervised manifold learning can successfully retrieve topological quantum phase transitions in momentum and real space. Our results show that the Chebyshev distance between two data points sharpens the characteristic features of topological quantum phase transitions in momentum space, while the widely used Euclidean distance is in general suboptimal. Then a diffusion map or isometric map can be applied to implement the dimensionality reduction, and to learn about topological quantum phase transitions in an unsupervised manner. We demonstrate this method on the prototypical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, the Qi-Wu-Zhang (QWZ) model, and the quenched SSH model in momentum space, and further provide implications and demonstrations for learning in real space, where the topological invariants could be unknown or hard to compute. The interpretable good performance of our approach shows the capability of manifold learning, when equipped with a suitable distance metric, in exploring topological quantum phase transitions.

A few properties of the ratio of Davenport-Heilbronn Functions

Starting from the Davenport-Heilbronn function equation: $f(s) = X(s) f(1-s)$, we discover the four properties of the meromorphic function $X(s)$ defined as the ratio of the Davenport-Heilbronn functions: $\frac{f(s)}{f(1-s)} = X(s)$, and three corresponding lemmas. For the first time, we propose to study the distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Davenport-Heilbronn function by exploring the monotonicity of the similarity ratio $\left| \frac{f(s)}{f(1-s)} \right|$. We point out that for the $f(s)$ which satisfies the Davenport-Heilbronn function equation, the existence of non-trivial zeros outside of the critical line $\{ s_n | σ\neq 1/2 \}$ presents two puzzles: 1) $f(s_n) \neq f(1 - s_n)$; 2) the existence of non-trivial zeros $\{ s_n | σ\neq 1/2 \}$ is in contradiction of the monotonicity of the similar ratio $\left| \frac{f(s)}{f(1-s)}\right|$.

Optimal Allocation of Gold Standard Testing under Constrained Availability: Application to Assessment of HIV Treatment Failure

The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for monitoring the effectiveness of HIV treatment in resource-limited settings (RLS) are mostly based on clinical and immunological markers (e.g., CD4 cell counts). Recent research indicates that the guidelines are inadequate and can result in high error rates. Viral load (VL) is considered the "gold standard", yet its widespread use is limited by cost and infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a diagnostic algorithm that uses information from routinely-collected clinical and immunological markers to guide a selective use of VL testing for diagnosing HIV treatment failure, under the assumption that VL testing is available only at a certain portion of patient visits. Our algorithm identifies the patient subpopulation, such that the use of limited VL testing on them minimizes a pre-defined risk (e.g., misdiagnosis error rate). Diagnostic properties of our proposal algorithm are assessed by simulations. For illustration, data from the Miriam Hospital Immunology Clinic (RI, USA) are analyzed.

Recognition of Surface Oxygen Intermediates on NiFe Oxyhydroxide Oxygen-evolving Catalysts by Homogeneous Oxidation Reactivity

NiFe oxyhydroxide is one of the most promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for renewable hydrogen production, and deciphering the identity and reactivity of the oxygen intermediates on its surface is a key challenge but is critical to understanding the OER mechanism as well as designing water-splitting catalysts with higher efficiencies. Here, we screened and utilized in situ reactive probes that can selectively target specific oxygen intermediates with high rates to investigate the OER intermediates and pathway on NiFe oxyhydroxide. Most importantly, the oxygen atom transfer (OAT) probes (e.g. 4-(Diphenylphosphino) benzoic acid) could efficiently inhibit the OER kinetics by scavenging the OER intermediates, exhibiting lower OER currents, larger Tafel slopes and larger kinetic isotope effect values, while probes with other reactivities demonstrated much smaller effects. Combining the OAT reactivity with electrochemical kinetic and operando Raman spectroscopic techniques, we identified a resting Fe=O intermediate in the Ni-O scaffold and a rate-limiting O-O chemical coupling step between a Fe=O moiety and a vicinal bridging O. DFT calculation further revealed a longer Fe=O bond formed on the surface and a large kinetic energy barrier of the O-O chemical step, corroborating the experimental results. These results point to a new direction of liberating lattice O and expediting O-O coupling for optimizing NiFe-based OER electrocatalyst.

Atomic scale visualization of topological spin textures in the chiral magnet MnGe

Spin polarized scanning tunneling microscopy is used to directly image topological magnetic textures in thin films of MnGe, and to correlate the magnetism with structure probed at the atomic-scale. Our images indicate helical stripe domains, each characterized by a single wavevector Q, and their associated helimagnetic domain walls, in contrast to the 3Q magnetic state seen in the bulk. Combining our surface measurements with micromagnetic modeling, we deduce the three-dimensional orientation of the helical wavevectors and gain detailed understanding of the structure of individual domain walls and their intersections. We find that three helical domains meet in two distinct ways to produce either a "target-like" or a "pi-like" topological spin texture, and correlate these with local strain on the surface. We further show that the target-like texture can be reversibly manipulated through either current/voltage pulsing or applied magnetic field, a promising step toward future applications.

Orbital Dynamics with the Gravitational Perturbation due to a Disk

The secular behavior of an orbit under the gravitational perturbation due to a two-dimensional uniform disk is studied in this paper, through analytical and numerical approaches. We develop the secular approximation of this problem and obtain the averaged Hamiltonian for this system first. We find that, when the ratio of the semimajor axes of the inner orbit and the disk radius takes very small values ($\ll1$), and if the inclination between the inner orbit and the disk is greater than the critical value of $30^\circ$, the inner orbit will undergo the (classical) Lidov-Kozai resonance in which variations of eccentricity and inclination are usually very large and the system has two equilibrium points at $ω=π/2,3π/2$ ($ω$ is the argument of perihelion). The critical value will slightly drop to about $27^\circ$ as the ratio increases to 0.4. However, the secular resonances will not occur for the outer orbit and the variations of the eccentricity and inclination are small. When the ratio of the orbit and the disk radius is nearly $1$, there are many more complicated Lidov-Kozai resonance types which lead to the orbital behaviors that are different from the classical Lidov-Kozai case. In these resonances, the system has more equilibrium points which could appear at $ω=0,π/2,π,3π/2$, and even other values of $ω$. The variations of eccentricity and inclination become relatively moderate, moreover, in some cases the orbit can be maintained at a highly inclined state. In addition, a analysis shows that a Kuzmin disk can also lead to the (classical) Lidov-Kozai resonance and the critical inclination is also $30^\circ$.

MLPs to Find Extrema of Functionals

Multilayer perceptron (MLP) is a class of networks composed of multiple layers of perceptrons, and it is essentially a mathematical function. Based on MLP, we develop a new numerical method to find the extrema of functionals. As demonstrations, we present our solutions in three physic scenes. Ideally, the same method is applicable to any cases where the objective curve/surface can be fitted by second-order differentiable functions. This method can also be extended to cases where there are a finite number of non-differentiable (but continuous) points/surfaces.

Jet Topology

We introduce persistent Betti numbers to characterize topological structure of jets. These topological invariants measure multiplicity and connectivity of jet branches at a given scale threshold, while their persistence records evolution of each topological feature as this threshold varies. With this knowledge, in particular, we are able to reconstruct branch phylogenetic tree of each jet. These points are demonstrated in the benchmark scenario of light-quark versus gluon jets. This study provides a topological tool to develop jet taggers, and opens a new angle to look into jet physics.

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder Array: System Functions and Basic Performance Analysis

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder is a radio interferometer array designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization Universe, with the ultimate aim of mapping the large scale structure and measuring cosmological parameters such as the dark energy equation of state. Each of its three parallel cylinder reflectors is oriented in the north-south direction, and the array has a large field of view. As the Earth rotates, the northern sky is observed by drift scanning. The array is located in Hongliuxia, a radio-quiet site in Xinjiang, and saw its first light in September 2016. In this first data analysis paper for the Tianlai cylinder array, we discuss the sub-system qualification tests, and present basic system performance obtained from preliminary analysis of the commissioning observations during 2016-2018. We show typical interferometric visibility data, from which we derive the actual beam profile in the east-west direction and the frequency band-pass response. We describe also the calibration process to determine the complex gains for the array elements, either using bright astronomical point sources, or an artificial on site calibrator source, and discuss the instrument response stability, crucial for transit interferometry. Based on this analysis, we find a system temperature of about 90 K, and we also estimate the sensitivity of the array.

Distributed Optimization With Event-triggered Communication via Input Feedforward Passivity

In this work, we address the distributed optimization problem with event-triggered communication by the notion of input feedforward passivity (IFP). First, we analyze the distributed continuous-time algorithm over uniformly jointly strongly connected balanced digraphs in an IFP-based framework. Then, we propose a distributed event-triggered communication mechanism for this algorithm. Next, we discretize the continuous-time algorithm by the forward Euler method with a constant stepsize irrelevant to network size, and show that the discretization can be seen as a stepsize-dependent passivity degradation of the input feedforward passivity. Thus, the discretized system preserves the IFP property and enables the same event-triggered communication mechanism but without Zeno behavior due to the discrete-time nature. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate our results.

Changes of Magnetism in a Magnetic Insulator due to Proximity to a Topological Insulator

This letter reports the modification of magnetism in a magnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12 thin film by topological surface states (TSS) in an adjacent topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin film. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements show that the TSS in Bi2Se3 produces a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, results in a decrease in the gyromagnetic ratio, and enhances the damping in Y3Fe5O12. Such TSS-induced changes become more pronounced as the temperature decreases from 300 K to 50 K. These results suggest a completely new approach for control of magnetism in magnetic thin films.

BHN: A Brain-like Heterogeneous Network

The human brain works in an unsupervised way, and more than one brain region is essential for lighting up intelligence. Inspired by this, we propose a brain-like heterogeneous network (BHN), which can cooperatively learn a lot of distributed representations and one global attention representation. By optimizing distributed, self-supervised, and gradient-isolated objective functions in a minimax fashion, our model improves its representations, which are generated from patches of pictures or frames of videos in experiments.

Non-Hermitian coherent coupling of nanomagnets by exchange spin waves

Non-Hermitian physics has recently attracted much attention in optics and photonics. Less explored is non-Hermitian magnonics that provides opportunities to take advantage of the inevitable dissipation of magnons or spin waves in magnetic systems. Here we demonstrate non-Hermitian coherent coupling of two distant nanomagnets by fast spin waves with sub-50 nm wavelengths. Magnons in two nanomagnets are unidirectionally phase-locked with phase shifts controlled by magnon spin torque and spin-wave propagation. Our results are attractive for analog neuromorphic computing that requires unidirectional information transmission.

Probing P and CP Violations on the Cosmological Collider

In direct analogy to the 4-body decay of a heavy scalar particle, the 4-point correlation function of primordial fluctuations carries P and CP information. The CP violation appears as a P-odd angular dependence in the imaginary part of the trispectrum in momentum space. We construct a model with axion-like couplings which leads to observably large CP-violating trispectrum for future surveys. Furthermore, we show the importance of on-shell particle production in observing P- and CP-violating signals. It is impossible to observe these signals from local 4-scalar EFT operators that respect dS isometries, and thus any such observation can rule out single-field EFT with sufficiently small slow-roll parameters. This calculation opens a new frontier of studying P and CP at very high energy scales.

Learning Physics at Future $e^-e^+$ Colliders with Machine

Information deformation and loss in jet clustering are one of the major limitations for precisely measuring hadronic events at future $e^-e^+$ colliders. Because of their dominance in data, the measurements of such events are crucial for advancing the precision frontier of Higgs and electroweak physics in the next decades. We show that this difficulty can be well-addressed by synergizing the event-level information into the data analysis, with the techniques of deep neutral network. In relation to this, we introduce a CMB-like observable scheme, where the event-level kinematics is encoded as Fox-Wolfram (FW) moments at leading order and multi-spectra at higher orders. Then we develop a series of jet-level (w/ and w/o the FW moments) and event-level classifiers, and analyze their sensitivity performance comparatively with two-jet and four-jet events. As an application, we analyze measuring Higgs decay width at $e^-e^+$ colliders with the data of 5ab$^{-1}@$240GeV. The precision obtained is significantly better than the baseline ones presented in documents. We expect this strategy to be applied to many other hadronic-event measurements at future $e^-e^+$ colliders, and to open a new angle for evaluating their physics capability.

A Proof of Riemann Hypothesis

The meromorphic function $W(s)$ introduced in the Riemann-Zeta function $ζ(s) = W(s) ζ(1-s)$ maps the line of $s = 1/2 + it$ onto the unit circle in $W$-space. $|W(s)| = 0$ gives the trivial zeroes of the Riemann-Zeta function $ζ(s)$. In the range: $0 < |W(s)| \neq 1$, $ζ(s)$ does not have nontrivial zeroes. $|W(s)|=1$ is the necessary condition for the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann-Zeta function. Writing $s = σ+ it$, in the range: $0 \leq σ\leq 1$, but $σ\neq 1/2$, even if $|W(s)|=1$, the Riemann-Zeta function $ζ(s)$ is non-zero. Based on these arguments, the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann-Zeta function $ζ(s)$ can only be on the $s = 1/2 + it$ critical line. Therefore a proof of the Riemann Hypothesis is presented.

Cost-effectiveness Analysis of Antiepidemic Policies and Global Situation Assessment of COVID-19

With a two-layer contact-dispersion model and data in China, we analyze the cost-effectiveness of three types of antiepidemic measures for COVID-19: regular epidemiological control, local social interaction control, and inter-city travel restriction. We find that: 1) intercity travel restriction has minimal or even negative effect compared to the other two at the national level; 2) the time of reaching turning point is independent of the current number of cases, and only related to the enforcement stringency of epidemiological control and social interaction control measures; 3) strong enforcement at the early stage is the only opportunity to maximize both antiepidemic effectiveness and cost-effectiveness; 4) mediocre stringency of social interaction measures is the worst choice. Subsequently, we cluster countries/regions into four groups based on their control measures and provide situation assessment and policy suggestions for each group.

Logic Bugs in IoT Platforms and Systems: A Review

In recent years, IoT platforms and systems have been rapidly emerging. Although IoT is a new technology, new does not mean simpler (than existing networked systems). Contrarily, the complexity (of IoT platforms and systems) is actually being increased in terms of the interactions between the physical world and cyberspace. The increased complexity indeed results in new vulnerabilities. This paper seeks to provide a review of the recently discovered logic bugs that are specific to IoT platforms and systems. In particular, 17 logic bugs and one weakness falling into seven categories of vulnerabilities are reviewed in this survey.
