Metrizability of Clifford topological semigroups

We prove that a topological Clifford semigroup $S$ is metrizable if and only if $S$ is an $M$-space and the set $E=\{e\in S:ee=e\}$ of idempotents of $S$ is a metrizable $G_δ$-set in $S$. The same metrization criterion holds also for any countably compact Clifford topological semigroup $S$.

On meager function spaces, network character and meager convergence in topological spaces

For a non-isolated point $x$ of a topological space $X$ the network character $nw_χ(x)$ is the smallest cardinality of a family of infinite subsets of $X$ such that each neighborhood $O(x)$ of $x$ contains a set from the family. We prove that (1) each infinite compact Hausdorff space $X$ contains a non-isolated point $x$ with $nw_χ(x)=\aleph_0$; (2) for each point $x\in X$ with countable character there is an injective sequence in $X$ that $\F$-converges to $x$ for some meager filter $\F$ on $ω$; (3) if a functionally Hausdorff space $X$ contains an $\F$-convergent injective sequence for some meager filter $\F$, then for every $T_1$-space $Y$ that contains two non-empty open sets with disjoint closures, the function space $C_p(X,Y)$ is meager. Also we investigate properties of filters $\F$ admitting an injective $\F$-convergent sequence in $βω$.

Characterizing chainable, tree-like, and circle-like continua

We prove that a continuum $X$ is tree-like (resp. circle-like, chainable) if and only if for each open cover $\U_4=\{U_1,U_2,U_3,U_4\}$ of $X$ there is a $\U_4$-map $f:X\to Y$ onto a tree (resp. onto the circle, onto the interval). A continuum $X$ is an acyclic curve if and only if for each open cover $\U_3=\{U_1,U_2,U_3\}$ of $X$ there is a $\U_3$-map $f:X\to Y$ onto a tree (or the interval $[0,1]$).

Embedding topological semigroups into the hyperspaces over topological groups

We study algebraic and topological properties of subsemigroups of the hyperspace exp(G) of non-empty compact subsets of a topological group G endowed with the Vietoris topology and the natural semigroup operation. On this base we prove that a compact Clifford topological semigroup S is topologically isomorphic to a subsemigroup of exp(G) for a suitable topological group G if and only if S is a topological inverse semigroup with zero-dimensional idempotent semilattice.

Uniform Eberlein compactifications of metrizable spaces

We prove that each metrizable space (of cardinality less or equal to continuum) has a (first countable) uniform Eberlein compactification and each scattered metrizable space has a scattered hereditarily paracompact compactification. Each compact scattered hereditarily paracompact space is uniform Eberlein and belongs to the smallest class of compact spaces, that contain the empty set, the singleton, and is closed under producing the Aleksandrov compactification of the topological sum of a family of compacta from that class.

Centerpole sets for colorings of Abelian groups

Given a topological group $G$ we calculate or evaluate the cardinal characteristic $c_k(G)$ (and $c_k^B(G)$) equal to the smallest cardinality of a $k$-centerpole subset $C\subset G$ for (Borel) colorings of $G$. A subset $C\subset G$ of a topological group $G$ is called {\em $k$-centerpole} if for each (Borel) $k$-coloring of $G$ there is an unbounded monochromatic subset $G$, which is symmetric with respect to a point $c\in C$ in the sense that $S=cS^{-1}c$.

On thin-complete ideals of subsets of groups

Given a family $F$ of subsets of a group $G$ we describe the structure of its thin-completion $τ^*(F)$, which is the smallest thin-complete family that contains $I$. A family $F$ of subsets of $G$ is called thin-complete if each $F$-thin subset of $G$ belongs to $F$. A subset $A$ of $G$ is called $F$-thin if for any distinct points $x,y$ of $G$ the intersection $xA\cap yA$ belongs to the family $F$. We prove that the thin-completion of an ideal in an ideal. If $G$ is a countable non-torsion group, then the thin-completion $τ^*(F_G)$ of the ideal $F_G$ of finite subsets of $G$ is coanalytic but not Borel in the power-set $P_G$ of $G$.

Topological classification of zero-dimensional $M_ω$-groups

A topological group $G$ is called an $M_ω$-group if it admits a countable cover $\K$ by closed metrizable subspaces of $G$ such that a subset $U$ of $G$ is open in $G$ if and only if $U\cap K$ is open in $K$ for every $K\in\K$. It is shown that any two non-metrizable uncountable separable zero-dimenisional $M_ω$-groups are homeomorphic. Together with Zelenyuk's classification of countable $k_ω$-groups this implies that the topology of a non-metrizable zero-dimensional $M_ω$-group $G$ is completely determined by its density and the compact scatteredness rank $r(G)$ which, by definition, is equal to the least upper bound of scatteredness indices of scattered compact subspaces of $G$.

On the length of chains of proper subgroups covering a topological group

We prove that if an ultrafilter L is not coherent to a Q-point, then each analytic non-sigma-bounded topological group G admits an increasing chain of its proper subgroups such that: (i) U_{a in b(L)} G_a=G; and $(ii)$ For every sigma-bounded subgroup H of G there exists a such that H is a subset of G_a. In case of the group Sym(w) of all permutations of w with the topology inherited from w^w this improves upon earlier results of S. Thomas.

Partitions of groups and matroids into independent subsets

Can the real line with removed zero be covered by countably many linearly (algebraically) independent subsets over the field of rationals? We use a matroid approach to show that an answer is "Yes" under the Continuum Hypothesis, and "No" under its negation.

Algebra in superextensions of twinic groups

Given a group $X$ we study the algebraic structure of the compact right-topological semigroup $λ(X)$ consisting of maximal linked systems on $X$. This semigroup contains the semigroup $β(X)$ of ultrafilters as a closed subsemigroup. We construct a faithful representation of the semigroup $λ(X)$ in the semigroup of all self-maps of the power-set of $X$ and using this representation describe the structure of minimal ideal and minimal left ideals of $λ(X)$ for each twinic group $X$. The class of twinic groups includes all amenable groups and all groups with periodic commutators but does not include the free group with two generators.

Pontryagin duality between compact and discrete abelian inverse monoids

For a topological monoid S the dual inverse monoid is the topological monoid of all identity preserving homomorphisms from S to the circle with attached zero. A topological monoid S is defined to be reflexive if the canonical homomorphism from S to its second dual inverse monoid is a topological isomorphism. We prove that a (compact or discrete) topological inverse monoid S is reflexive (if and) only if S is abelian and the idempotent semilattice of S is zero-dimensional. For a discrete (resp. compact) topological monoid its dual inverse monoid is compact (resp. discrete). These results unify the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem for abelian groups and the Hofmann-Mislove-Stralka Duality Theorem for zero-dimensional topological semilattices.

Embedding the bicyclic semigroup into countably compact topological semigroups

We study algebraic and topological properties of topological semigroups containing a copy of the bicyclic semigroup C(p,q). We prove that each topological semigroup S with pseudocompact square contains no dense copy of C(p,q). On the other hand, we construct a (consistent) example of a pseudocompact (countably compact) Tychonov semigroup containing a copy of C(p,q).

Constructing non-compact operators into $c_0$

We prove that for each dense non-compact linear operator $S:X\to Y$ between Banach spaces there is a linear operator $T:Y\to c_0$ such that the operator $TS:X\to c_0$ is not compact. This generalizes the Josefson-Nissenzweig Theorem.

Topological classification of closed convex sets in Frechet spaces

We prove that each non-separable completely metrizable convex subset of a Frechet space is homeomorphic to a Hilbert space. This resolves an old (more than 30 years) problem of infinite-dimensional topology. Combined with the topological classification of separable convex sets due to Klee, Dobrowoslki and Torunczyk, this result implies that each closed convex subset of a Frechet space is homemorphic to $[0,1]^n\times [0,1)^m\times l_2(k)$ for some cardinals $0\le n\leω$, $0\le m\le 1$ and $k\ge 0$.
