Direct limit topologies in the categories of topological groups and of uniform spaces

We study the topological structure of the direct limit $\glim G_n$ of a tower of topological groups $(G_n)$ in the category of topological groups and show that under some conditions on the tower $(G_n)$ the topology of $\glim G_n$ coincides with the topology of the direct limit $\ulim G_n$ of the groups $G_n$ endowed with the Roelcke uniformity in the category of uniform spaces.

On subgroups of saturated or totally bounded paratopological groups

A paratopological group $G$ is saturated if the inverse $U^{-1}$ of each non-empty set $U\subset G$ has non-empty interior. It is shown that a [first-countable] paratopological group $H$ is a closed subgroup of a saturated (totally bounded) [abelian] paratopological group if and only if $H$ admits a continuous bijective homomorphism onto a (totally bounded) [abelian] topological group $G$ [such that for each neighborhood $U\subset H$ of the unit $e$ there is a closed subset $F\subset G$ with $e\in h^{-1}(F)\subset U$]. As an application we construct a paratopological group whose character exceeds its $π$-weight as well as the character of its group reflexion. Also we present several examples of (para)topological groups which are subgroups of totally bounded paratopological groups but fail to be subgroups of regular totally bounded paratopological groups.

Homeomorphism and diffeomorphism groups of non-compact manifolds with the Whitney topology

For a non-compact n-manifold M let H(M) denote the group of homeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney topology and H_c(M) the subgroup of H(M) consisting of homeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the group H_c(M) is locally contractible and the identity component H_0(M) of H(M) is an open normal subgroup in H_c(M). This induces the topological factorization H_c(M) \approx H_0(M) \times \M_c(M) for the mapping class group \M_c(M) = H_c(M)/H_0(M) with the discrete topology. Furthermore, for any non-compact surface M, the pair (H(M), H_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2,\cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Thus the group H_c(M) is an (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold. We also study topological properties of the group D(M) of diffeomorphisms of a non-compact smooth n-manifold M endowed with the Whitney C^\infty-topology and the subgroup D_c(M) of D(M) consisting of all diffeomorphisms with compact support. It is shown that the pair (D(M),D_c(M)) is locally homeomorphic to (\square^w l_2, \cbox^w l_2) at the identity id_M of M. Hence the group D_c(M) is a topological (l_2 \times R^\infty)-manifold for any dimension n.

Spaces of maps into topological group with the Whitney topology

Let X be a locally compact Polish space and G a non-discrete Polish ANR group. By C(X,G), we denote the topological group of all continuous maps f:X \to G endowed with the Whitney (graph) topology and by C_c(X,G) the subgroup consisting of all maps with compact support. It is known that if X is compact and non-discrete then the space C(X,G) is an l_2-manifold. In this article we show that if X is non-compact and not end-discrete then C_c(X,G) is an (R^\infty \times l_2)-manifold, and moreover the pair (C(X,G), C_c(X,G)) is locally homeomorphic to the pair of the box and the small box powers of l_2.

Spaces with fibered approximation property in dimension $n$

A metric space $M$ us said to have the fibered approximation property in dimension $n$ (br., $M\in \mathrm{FAP}(n)$) if for any $ε>0$, $m\geq 0$ and any map $g: I^m\times I^n\to M$ there exists a map $g':I^m\times I^n\to M$ such that $g'$ is $ε$-homotopic to $g$ and $\dim g'\big(\{z\}\times I^n\big)\leq n$ for all $z\in I^m$. The class of spaces having the $\mathrm{FAP}(n)$-property is investigated in this paper. The main theorems are applied to obtain generalizations of some results due to Uspenskij and Tuncali-Valov.

Extending binary operations to funtor-spaces

Given a continuous monadic functor T in the category of Tychonov spaces for each discrete topological semigroup X we extend the semigroup operation of X to a right-topological semigroup operation on TX whose topological center contains the dense subsemigroup of all elements of TX that have finite support.

Zariski topologies on groups

The $n$-th Zariski topology on a group $G$ is generated by the sub-base consiting of the cozero sets of monomials of degree $\le n$ on $G$. We prove that for each group $G$ the 2-nd Zariski topology is not discrete and present an example of a group $G$ of cardinality continuum whose 2-nd Zariski topology has countable pseudocharacter. On the other hand, the non-topologizable group $G$ constructed by Ol'shanskii has discrete 665-th Zariski topology.

The topological structure of (homogeneous) spaces and groups with countable cs*-character

In this paper we introduce and study three new cardinal topological invariants called the cs*, cs-, and sb-characters. The class of topological spaces with countable cs*-character is closed under many topological operations and contains all aleph-spaces and all spaces with point-countable cs*-network. Our principal result states that each non-metrizable sequential topological group with countable cs*-character has countable pseudo-character and contains an open $k_ω$-subgroup.

On topological groups containing a Fréchet-Urysohn fan

Suppose G is a topological group containing a (closed) topological copy of the Frechet-Urysohn fan. If G is a perfectly normal sequential space (a normal k-space) then every closed metrizable subset in $G$ is locally compact. Applying this result to topological groups whose underlying topological space can be written as a direct limit of a sequence of closed metrizable subsets, we get that every such a group either is metrizable or is homeomorphic to the product of a $k_ω$-space and a discrete space.

The topological structure of direct limits in the category of uniform spaces

Let $(X_n)_{n}$ be a sequence of uniform spaces such that each space $X_n$ is a closed subspace in $X_{n+1}$. We give an explicit description of the topology and uniformity of the direct limit $u-lim X_n$ of the sequence $(X_n)$ in the category of uniform spaces. This description implies that a function $f:u-lim X_n\to Y$ to a uniform space $Y$ is continuous if for every $n$ the restriction $f|X_n$ is continuous and regular at the subset $X_{n-1}$ in the sense that for any entourages $U\in\U_Y$ and $V\in\U_X$ there is an entourage $V\in\U_X$ such that for each point $x\in B(X_{n-1},V)$ there is a point $x'\in X_{n-1}$ with $(x,x')\in V$ and $(f(x),f(x'))\in U$. Also we shall compare topologies of direct limits in various categories.

The diffeomorphism groups of the real line are pairwise bihomeomorphic

We prove that the group D^r(R) of C^r diffeomorphisms of the real line, endowed with the compact-open and Whitney C^r topologies, is bihomeomorphic to the group H(R) of homeomorphisms of the real line endowed with the compact-open and Whitney topologies. This implies that the diffeomorphism group D^r(R) endowed with the Whitney C^r topology is homeomorphic to the countable box-power of the separable Hilbert space.

o-Boundedness of free topological groups

Assuming the absence of Q-points (which is consistent with ZFC) we prove that the free topological group $F(X)$ over a Tychonov space $X$ is $o$-bounded if and only if every continuous metrizable image $T$ of $X$ satisfies the selection principle $U_{fin}(O,Ω)$ (the latter means that for every sequence $ _{n\in w}$ of open covers of $T$ there exists a sequence $ _{n\in w}$ such that $v_n\in [u_n]^{<w}$ and for every $F\in [X]^{<w}$ there exists $n\in w$ with $F\subset\cup v_n$). This characterization gives a consistent answer to a problem posed by C. Hernandes, D. Robbie, and M. Tkachenko in 2000.

The Rees-Suschkewitsch Theorem for simple topological semigroups

We detect topological semigroups that are topological paragroups, i.e., are isomorphic to a Rees product of a topological group over topological spaces with a continuous sandwich function. We prove that a simple topological semigroup $S$ is a topological paragroup if one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) $S$ is completely simple and the maximal subgroups of $S$ are topological groups, (2) $S$ contains an idempotent and the square $S\times S$ is countably compact or pseudocompact, (3) $S$ is sequentially compact or each power of $S$ is countably compact. The last item generalizes an old Wallace's result saying that each simple compact topological semigroup is a topological paragroup.
